"INTRODUCTION The first paper of this series contained data concerning the behavior of polyhalite (K2S04.MgS04.2CaS04.2H20) upon calcination and subsequent leaching with water at 100° C. It was found that upon heating polyhalite to temperatures between 298 and 500° C. the water of crystallization is driven off, leaving, an amorphous mixture of K2S04, MgS04, and CaS04. Two transition points were located; one at 298° C. which coincides with the vigorous evolution of steam; and one at 551° C. which results in the formation of a hard mass of crystals. The latter probably consist of a solid solution If the compounds langbeinite (K2504, 2MgS04), potassium dicalcium sulphate (K2304. 2CaS04), and anhydrite (CaS04). The heat of decomposition of polyhalite at 298° C. was measured and found to be 66,000 ± 5,000 calories per mol. The optimum temperature of calcination with regard to subsequent extrac¬tion with two parts of water (at "" 0° C.) is 430 to 450° C. for 65 to 100 mesh material, if one half hour at the calcination temperature is allowed. The maximum concentration of K2S04 obtainable in the extraction of calcined polyhalite is 11.4 grams per 100 grams of water. This concentration of K2304 is considerably above the equilibrium value (3.6 g. per 100 L. of H20 at 83° C.) with respect to the solid phases polyhalite, potassium calcium pentasulphate, ¬and anhydrite. The figure 11.4 K. of K2804 per 100 g. of H20 is also somewhat than the equilibrium value (9,65 g. per 100 g, H20) with respect to the solid phases potassium calcium pentasulphate and syngenite."

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a estratégia adotada para a migração dos sistemas de otimização de processo dos três Altos Fornos da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. O desenvolvimento dos novos sistemas é baseado no Plano Diretor de Tecnologia de Automação (PDTA) que definiu a arquitetura, tecnologias e elaborou o Framework como base das aplicações. Para a migração dos sistemas foi elaborada uma especificação detalhada de todos os módulos e funcionalidades existentes, permitindo dessa forma a criação de uma camada com as principais regras de negócios relativas ao processo para serem reutilizados em todos os Altos Fornos. Essa camada deu origem ao Framework dos Altos Fornos. Os resultados obtidos já podem ser vistos nos três sistemas migrados para a nova plataforma, com um alto desempenho e estabilidade, garantido dessa forma a segurança operacional objetivada.

This paper discusses the Installation of a Vibwall for the Cardiff Bay Barrage Project Wales, UK, by Kvaerner Cementation Foundations. Only the second use of the technique in the UK the wall was successfully placed to a depth in excess of 20 metres, in unique and challenging conditions. The installation of the Vibwall was a technical success, but not a financial one. The use of the technique was at its "limits" and this paper recommends some of the controls essential in the carrying out of such work in the future.

Well planned and executed environmental management plans can reduce life-of-mine operating costs and the need to deal with major environmental issues at the time of mine closure. With proper planning during the exploration, feasibility and execution phases of a project, final closure costs can be reduced. The reduction of closure costs should be considered during exploration and initial feasibility studies and when process facilities, waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments are designed. During the mining of the resource, closure cost reduction will depend on effective and efficient environmental management plans for ongoing land clearance, segregation of mine waste materials, management of mine site water and workshop wastewaters, and the establishment of progressive rehabilitation strategies. These issues are the responsibility of planning, production, technical support and maintenance personnel at an operating site. The successful implementation of environmental plans will ensure that all impacts are reduced and that closure issues with major cost implications are addressed prior to closure of the mine.

Nesse estudo foi fabricada uma matriz hipoeutética de Al-2%Ni e adicionado nela a concentração 1,0 % de nanotubos de carbono de paredes múltiplas (NTCPM). A fabricação do material estudado aconteceu por fundição e resfriamento unidirecional brusco originando grãos predominantemente colunares. Os ensaios mecânicos mostram que concentrações maiores de nanotubo na matriz provocam acréscimo na propriedade mecânica e que em áreas mais distante da base extratora de calor a microdureza aumenta. As curvas de tensão-deformação, para os materiais estudados, evidenciaram que o acréscimo de 1% NTC na liga de Al-2%Ni teve como resultado, uma alta deformação plástica. No entanto, o endurecimento do material não afetou o aumento da resistência à tração.

The paper presents background information including data on diesel exhaust pollutants, amounts produced and standards, a desscription of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques and a review of portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited commenced productive operations during February, 1936, at the- Rosebery and Hercules mines, which are situated near Rosebery, Tasmania. At this time it was decided that before re-organizing the steel sharpening shop a test should be made of the relative merits of conventional drill-steel and detachable bits. For this purpose Ingersoll-Rand type"I" thread centre hole.jackbits were selected and seventy-two of these were tested against conventional steel. Results indicated that, under the conditions pertaining at these mines, j ackbits should prove more economical than conventional drill-steel bits, and that a large-scale test, under working conditions, should be made. This was done by gradually replacing conventional drill-steel with jackbits at the Rosebery mine. Results were satisfactory and by the end of 1936 both mines were using only the jackbits.

Recent work on modeling of BOF steelmaking is reviewed, highlighting the critical aspects of each approach. It is concluded that the most successful models should be based on a deep understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the critical reactions. The importance of the decarburization mechanism is discussed with particular reference to its role in droplet swelling or bloating which has a profound influence on the droplet residence time in the slag. Conditions which cause bloating are discussed and the rate determining step is proposed to be primarily nucleation of CO bubbles inside the metal droplet with some influence from growth by reaction at the bubble/metal interface. The discrepancy in the super-saturation ratio required for classical nucleation is discussed and an approach using a surface tension modifying parameter is illustrated. Finally, the role of CO nucleation in controlling the driving force for dephosphorization is discussed.

Foram encontrados vários casos de falha de engrenagens de redutores de grande porte, aplicados em turbogeradores em usinas de cogeração. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a análise de falha dessas engrenagens bihelicoidais. Engrenagens operam sob condição de carregamento cíclico variável, logo seus principais modos de falha são fadiga de contato e por flexão de dentes. A engrenagem estudada, fabricada em aço 18CrNiMo7-6, foi utlizada em campo e apresentou fratura em dois dentes. Realizou-se uma análise de espectrofotometria para confirmação da composição química do material base. Uma análise microestrutural foi realizada utilizando microscopia óptica, revelando que a microestrutura corresponde a martensita com austenita retida. Foi feito um perfil de microdureza no plano transversal do dente, que indicou uma camada cementada efetiva de 2.150 µm e dureza de 715 HV0.1 na superficie. Foi feita uma fractografia macroscópica para determinação das caracteristicas da fratura, o que permitiu identificar marcas de praia e deltas de rio. Aliado a isso, foram feitas imagens por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, determinando o local do início da trinca. A partir dessas evidências, pôde-se concluir que o mecanismo de falha predominante foi fadiga por flexão de dente.

A 220-meter (m) segment of the Henderson/ ML King Combined Sewer Overflow(CSO) consists of two 1.8-meter-inside diameter (I.D.) pipe-jacked tunnels that pass beneath Interstate-5 and the BNSF and UPRR railroads. A seismic tomography survey was conducted to develop a 3-dimensional profile of the tunnel zone and better define potential obstructions. The tomography was conducted through three 11 cm high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes installed in a triangular pattern around the future tunnel alignments using horizontal directional drilling methods. The pipe-jacked tunnels have been successfully completed, thus permitting a comparison between the predicted obstructions and those actually encountered. The top HDPE tomography pipe was also used to monitor settlements with an experimental horizontal profiler above the advancing tunnels during construction and located two areas of ground loss beneath I-5 that were subsequently grouted.

"As mine head grades decline and orebodies become more complex, traditional mineral processing techniques and flowsheets to achieve saleable concentrate become more difficult to design and construct. Mines with lower quality concentrates or concentrates with penalty elements are particular under threat. The economics of these operations are far more susceptible to metal price, concentrate treatment terms and the availability of other, cleaner concentrates. Additional value may be realised for these orebodies through improved recovery by producing a low grade middling concentrate for further processing, in conjunction with a saleable concentrate.The most cost effective way to reduce impurity levels is to do so as early as possible in the mining value chain. Technologies such as fine grinding and fine particle flotation are well established as effective methods for impurity rejection in mineral processing. What is normally overlooked is how a hydrometallurgical process could also be integrated in the overall flowsheet to achieve higher overall recovery at the mill. In the base metals environment, this is mainly because hydrometallurgical processes are associated with production of metal or use of expensive and toxic precipitating agents once the minerals of interest are solubilised. These processes can be very expensive, particularly with rising power costs and poor economies of scale in capital costs associated with low production rates from middling streams.Glencore Technology (GT) has recent experience in the treatment of middling and low grade concentrate streams as well as tailings streams to compliment a concentrator flowsheet in a refractory gold and base metals setting. The value proposition is the isolation of a low grade middlings concentrate from the primary circuit or the tailings stream for upgrading to an intermediate product with an equal or higher grade than the primary concentrate to allow blending for sale. This allows plants to operate on a more favourable part grade-recovery curve while avoiding the expense of metal production. For existing operations this is particularly attractive since it can be added on with no process interruptions.Two case studies are examined showing flowsheets and costings to arrive at the value proposition of the GT low grade treatment flowsheet."

Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system capable of retrieving the reference line-marked core log, which can be used for determining the relative positions and orientations of discontinuity planes along the borehole axis, has been developed. Accuracy of the borehole joints data measured from the reference-lined core and, eventually, the significance and applicability of DOM drilling system for site exploration are verified by comparing with the spatial characteristics of joints investigated by implementing borehole image-taking instruments in the same borehole. Enhancement of boring efficiency has been also confirmed by performing twin drilling operations, one with DOM drilling system and the other with a conventional drilling machine equipped with D-3 core barrel, on two neighbouring sites of 5 m apart. Ein DOM(Diskontinuitätsorientierungsmessung)-Bohrsystem, das durch Grundlinien markierte Bohrprobelog extrahieren kann und die relativen Lagen und die Orientierungen der sich im Bohrloch verbreitenden Flächen bestimmen kann, ist entwickelt worden. El presente texto describe la aplicación de los principios de exploración geoquímica en un sector de la faja aurífera Nazca -Ocoña correspondiente a la mina "Las Agripiinas". El objetivo es determinar anomalías de oro en base a un muestreo sistemático de afloramientos y niveles ya en desarrollo y así ubicar nuevas áreas favorables para la realización de labores mineros que conduzcan a aumentar las reservas de la mina. La exploración por oro se realizó en rocas metamórficas esquistosas con vetas de cuarzo-pirita, intrusivos granodioríticos y volcánicos andesíticos caracterizados por procesos de dispersión primaría. La dispersión secundaria se determina en óxidos, producto de la alteración de los ferromagnesianos y sulfuros.

Most tunnels built in Sydney encounter similar ground situations; they penetrate either the Hawkesbury Sandstone or the shales that lie beneath the city. Tunnels in these materials are generally sup-ported by rock bolts in combination with a shotcrete lining. A method of analysis is presented to improve our understanding of the long term behaviour of fiber reinforced shotcrete (FRS) materials and the tunnel support systems. A finite element method SAFEA (Semi-analytical FE Analysis) is developed to model the combined creep behaviour of a shotcrete lining and the Hawkesbury Sandstone. To model the time-dependent creep behaviour, the bulk modulus and shear modulus of the materials are represented by logarithmic functions in time. A Laplace transform is then applied to these functions of time and the solution of the problem found from a finite element analysis. Tablot?s method is then used to invert the transformed values and find the solution in real time. The time dependent creep deflection of the numerical tunnel models reflects the interaction of the shotcrete lining and rock which have different creep parameters.

The basic study from which this paper was prepared was started as the result of the growing need throughout the world for increasing quantities of energy in all forms. Quite obviously, natural forms of energy that are readily available at low development cost are those in greatest demand. The underdeveloped countries — and particularly those having little or no petroleum resources — are the countries in which the most interest is being shown in the newer energy sources. One of the least expensive energy sources is natural geothermal steam.'-* Although this form of energy has been recognized for centuries, it has been only during the past 20 years that serious efforts have been made to harness it. Natural geothermal steam energy in Italy, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan, and California is now being produced through wells to drive turbines and generate electricity. Further, active exploration for natural geothermal steam is being conducted in Hawaii, Fiji, Taiwan, Chile, Russia, Greece, and Katanga. It is surprising to find that most geothermal steam exploration is in the "steam seep" stage. That is, surface studies are made and exploratory wells are drilled in the general area of steam seeps. However, in the larger geothermal steam areas, there have been efforts to apply the most modern geological and reservoir engineering principles in order to define the reservoir parameters, particularly those relating to estimates of reserves and future productivity. This paper is concerned with the development of appropriate equations and techniques to facilitate these estimates. Production of natural steam or hot water presents problems different from those experienced in the production of oil and gas. For example, steam or hot water systems may be essentially single-component systems, while hydrocarbon systems are most frequently multicomponent fluid systems. Heat effects are much larger for water than for hydrocarbon systems; and the natural steam production may or may not be isothermal, while production of petroleum reservoirs is considered normally to be isothermal. Petroleum reservoir engineering principles may be applied to natural steam or hot water reservoirs if the inherent differences in the systems are considered. The basic considerations involved in geothermal steam reservoir engineering are: thermodynamics, physical and thermal properties of water, materials and energy balances, fluid influx, and performance matching and predicting. Thermodynamics Fig. 1 is a pressure-temperature diagram for the liquid-vapor region for pure water, showing the critical point and five other points representing possible initial conditions for a geothermal steam reservoir. "IntroductionIN UNDERGROUND mining operations, the mine hoist has become one of the most important and one of the most expensive single pieces of equipment. As the means of transporting men and materials to the face, broken ore to the mill, and waste to the dump, it is often the very lifeline of a mine and must operate with dependability and efficiency or the whole operation will suffer. The mine hoist has become synonymous with safety. In few other types of mechanical equipment do so many men so frequently and completely place their lives. In Canada, more has probably been done to assure safe hoisting than in most other countries, but, unfortunately, this has resulted, in many cases, in the mines having to pay a high price for equipment. Hoist manufacturers have carried out much research in recent years in the endeavour to keep down these costs and at the same time maintain or improve the efficiency and safety of their products. Broadly classified, the bases for design research are dependability, efficiency, safety, and first cost.Probably the greatest single factor influencing the design of mine hoists was the introduction of electric motor drives. It was not until about 1905 that an effective start was made in the development of electric mine hoists, and then only with machines of small size. From that time on, however, progress was rapid, as may be gauged from the fact that by 1910 one large group of mines in Johannesburg had in use, or on order, fifty-four three-phase hoists and four Ward-Leonard. type hoists."

Although thermodynamic data for ferrous oxide are among the most important in extractive metallurgy, adequate values have not been available until quite recently. The older data suffered not only from the usual experimental difficulties but especially from lack of the knowledge that ferrous oxide of stoichiometrical composition does not exist as a single, thermodynamically stable crystalline phase under any circumstances. This paper reports new experimental data on the heat of formation of ferrous oxide by two methods (combustion calorimetry and solution calorimetry), employing material of unequivocal composition. The results are compared with values obtained from data for the hydrogen reduction, carbon monoxide reduction, and disproportionation reactions of ferrous oxide, and a best value is selected. A table of heat and free energy of formation values of ferrous oxide to 2,000°K is given. These values are combined with available data for water, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide to obtain theoretical heats and free energies of reduction corresponding to the selected heat of formation. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction equilibria are compared, and the differences in trend with temperature and the percentage utilization of the reductants are considered.

A highly effective project team can be the difference between a successful project and a bad public relations exercise. This is the second review of developments in coal mining engineering (see C.I.M .M. Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262- 264) and covers the period from October, 1948, to January, 1950. Mechanization The period under review was characterized by the intensive development of appliances providing for complete mechanization of coal-face operations. A variety of machines are being evolved or have already been placed on the market which embody the principle of 'continuous mining'. This trend can be observed in all coal producing countries. In the United States, two continuous mining machines have been developed for entry and room application and by the end of 1 949 were being used in a number of mines. These are the Joy Continuous Miner in which the coal is ripped from the face by means of multiple cutter chains, and the Jeffrey Colmol employing cutters on rotating arms for chipping the coal from the face. The Joy machine is made in tw6l models, 34-in. and 48-in. high and designed for a range of seam thicknesses from 3-ft. -t-in. to 4-ft. 6-in. and from 4-ft. 6-in. to 8ft., respectively. Some experience has been gained with this machine and accounts of its performance are already appearing in the technical literature. The Jeffrey-Colmol has a more limited range of working height. The first model, 38-in. high, was designed for seams about 4 feet in thick11ess but more recently the 28-in. low model has been placed on the market for seams 2-ft. 6-in, to 3-ft. 4-in. in thickness. Conventional mobile loading machines of the gathering-arm type are continuing to yield high production under suitable conditions, and improvements or modifications of the basic principle are embodied in new machines as, for example, the Jeffrey mobile (conveyor) loader with extensible (gathering-arm) head developed for conveyor mining.

"The importance of coherent material balance results has long been recognized by mining and metallurgical companies. Although this is still true nowadays, various stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the origin and the accuracy of the reported numbers. The last decade has shown that most metallurgical accounting concerns can be addressed by making two important changes to plant performance monitoring practices. First, introducing data redundancy into the metal balance procedure allows the estimation of measurement errors. Second, the migration from spreadsheet-based to relational database based systems brings transparency, data integrity, traceability and auditability into metallurgical accounting. Relational databases also facilitate the production of reports that metallurgical accountants must issue routinely. Recognizing the caveats of the spreadsheet-based metal accounting method they had been applying for years, Strathcona decided to switch to a commercial relational database system in 2008. For the most part, the migration was seamless. Some challenges were raised but they could all be overcome and outweighed by benefits gained from day-to-day utilization of the system.INTRODUCTION Metal accounting (Morrison, 2008) has always been essential to high-quality corporate governance of mining and metallurgical companies. Although the importance of coherent material balance results has long been recognized, various stakeholders are increasingly inquisitive about how the reported numbers were obtained and how much accuracy can be attributed to them. This accrued scrutiny is obviously no stranger to the corporate governance tightening that happened through the years in response to outrageous accounting scandals. It is also in continuity with securities laws (such as NI-43-101 in Canada) that were passed to protect the public from other market fraud. Recognizing the importance of spotless metal accounting in their reports to the public, a group of global mining companies gave AMIRA International the mandate of developing a set of rigorous yet practical metal accounting guidelines for the mining and metallurgical industry. The AMIRA P754 project was launched in 2004 and the first version of the resulting Code of Practice was released the following year. Since then, the Code was reviewed twice and revised releases were issued (AMIRA, 2007). While some parts of these guidelines are in continuity with current commonplace practices, other parts recommend changes to inherited practices that may be significant. For example, they highlight the importance of data redundancy (Lachance & Flament, 2011) which in many operations is either already available but unexploited or achievable with reasonable efforts. These guidelines also stress the importance of state-of-the-art metal accounting systems, such as those based on relational databases, which are secure and entirely auditable by a Qualified Person. Because most spreadsheet software packages allow data and formulae to be modified at any time, without a trace and anonymously, they do not meet these requirements."
