"In coal mining in China, the cutting height of the shearer in longwall faces is increasing. Owing to the increase of extraction height, the caved roof strata area is enlarged, and new issues are being encountered, such as determination of a suitable working resistance for the shield and control of the roof. Through field observation and theoretical analysis of the first longwall face with a height of 6.0 m in the Bayangaole mine, a three-stage structural model was developed. Stage I is defined as the period in which the lower immediate roof (LIR) caves into the goaf and is broken into irregular shapes of various sizes. Stage II is defined as the period in which the upper immediate roof (UIR) breaks and impacts the LIR. In stage III, the main roof breaks into blocks and then impacts the UIR. With respect to these three stages, a suitable method was identified for calculating the working resistance of the shield support for a super-great mining height longwall face (SGMHLW). Introduction and backgroundThe coal seams in the Shendong coalfield, located in the northwest of China, are characterized by low dips and large thicknesses and are thus suited for full thickness extraction. Since the mid-1990s, the Shendong coalfield has been developed into one of the largest in the world (Ning, Liu, and Tan. 2014; Ning et al., 2017). Recent developments in mining equipment have made it possible extract entire seams up to 5.0 m thick in a single cut. This method, termed the ‘super-great mining height longwall face’ (SGMHLW) method, has been widely adopted in the Shendong coalfield (Table I) (Ju and Xu, 2013; Peng, Li, and Zhou 2015; Zhang, Fan, and Ma 2011). According to some studies, sudden support-closure incidents often occur when using the SGMHLW method. The key to solving this engineering issue is to have a clear understanding of the structural characteristics and movement laws of the overlying strata. Recently, 7xxx aluminum alloys have been evolved into new variants for thick semiproducts which have low amount of 2nd phases and low quench sensitivity. Commercial 7xxx alloys, especially in the thick forgings made of big ingots, often entail microstructural inhomogeneities and concurrent poor mechanical properties due to limited heating ranges and slower quench cooling. In this study, high strength aluminum alloy 7175 and 7050 are adjusted as an attempt to control the equilibrium phases (M-, T- and S-phase) to have optimum microstructure for the thick forging applications. The effects of the relative content of (Zn, Mg, Cu) on the evolutions of the coarse equilibrium phases, hardening response and resultant mechanical properties are investigated. Equilibrium phases (M,T,S) are evolved depending on the constitutional effect, primarily the change of Zn:Mg ratio, and cooling rate following solutionizing. The formation of the T- and S-phases is effectively controlled, and M-phases are homogeneously precipitated in the adjusted (dilute and high Zn:Mg ratio) alloys. It provides extended heating range and lower quench sensitivity than conventional alloys. The attempts ensure the microstructural homogeneity and improved properties, and is expected to be uniquely applicable in 7xxx thick forgings.

"The theory of flocculation usually is in a state of flux, involves many diverse phenomena, and is complex and sometimes contradictory in details. Instead of attempting a general discourse, I shall discuss selected observations made at our Stamford Laboratories, which impinge on theoretical aspects in two somewhat distinct areas of flocculation. Since some of you many not be familiar with flocculation, and :.n order that we all attach the same meaning to the jargon used, I first would like to review briefly a generalized picture of what goes on.Assume we have a suspension of particles in water, with a distribution in the sizes of particles. The surfaces of the particles interact to some extent with the water--· tending to alter the extent of hydration, may generate some ion exchange, all being somewhat variable with time--developing a surface condition which is very complex in details. We refer to this suspension as the ""substrate.""In the usual situation, if the suspension is allowed to stand quietly, the large particles settle out first, with somewhat smaller particles settling more slowly, and then there is a portion of very fine material which takes a long time or doesn't settle out at all. This resistance to settling t~ the very fine particles results from many factors, but all relate back to the size and density of the particles, to their surface properties, and to the other components in the aqueous suspending medium."

The new high speed Vienna - St.Pölten line and the Lainzer tunnel are to be connected to the existing Western railway line in Vienna. This involves building an underground cut and cover branching tunnel which will be connected to the Western railway line by ramps. A key structure is the Herzmansky Street tunnel, which has a length of some 820m. It is to be constructed as a cut and cover tunnel using the top down method. The walls of the tunnel are designed as a water resistant structure consisting of double walls, an outer wall of bored piles and an inner reinforced concrete wall. The bored pile wall will be used as a temporary retaining wall during the construction phase and will also be a structural part of the per­manent tunnel wall. The retaining walls of the open pit, which will have a depth of up to 14m and a width of 12m, were investigated as a non-contiguous bored pile wall and overlapped bored pile wall. Preventing ground water from penetrating into the pit is of paramount importance. The high ground wa­ter level is the determining factor for the dimensioning of the bored pile wall and results in the require­ment for a water resistant concrete structure. It has been necessary to adopt adequate measures, therefore, in order to reduce the hydrostatic water pressure during the construction phase, assuming economical pile dimensions.

This study was made to determine the capabilities and limitations of the hydrocyclone for separating quartz sand from impure clays, Optimum operating conditions for beneficiating typical subgrade clays were determined. Estimates are furnished for installation and direct operating costs of hydrocyclones in such separations. Laboratory models of commercial hydrocyclones were used to beneficiate a suite of fire clays including plastic, semiflint, and flint types, all of which were contaminated with quartz in amounts ranging from 3 to more than 62 percent. Results show that this technique is not limited to a single type of clay but is applicable to clays ranging from plastic through flint, Under proper conditions use of this technique will result in good separation of the sand and good recovery of a useful clay mineral concentrate. Rejection of quartz from the clays investigated ranged from a low of 82.4 percent with an alumina recovery of 71.2 percent to a high of 99.0 percent with an alumina recovery of 85.6 percent.

In view of the alarm expressed in many quarters over the increased production of copper to come from Canada and Africa in the future, it is of interest to study the history of the principal producing districts of the world and to attempt to forecast the future part to be played by them. Tables 1 and 2 record the world production and that of the United States, together with their respective rates of increase, both in percentage and actual amounts. The important point in this record is the decline in rates of increase for both the world and the United States, but more particularly in that of the latter, since 1881. The increase for the United States in the last decade is less than that for any decade since 1881, and is only 20 per cent of that for the decade 1911-20. The increase for the world is less than that for the two preceding decades, and is only about 65 per cent of the war decade 1911-20. Referring to Table 1, the decade 1871to1880 showed an increase of 32.l per cent in the world's production, which was the low until the last decade, ending 1930, which shows an increase of only 24.5 per cent. These decades both represent periods of economic stress following wars. In the first case the recovery was very sharp, the percentage increase in 1881-90 reaching a high of 86.4 per cent. It would seem dangerous, however, to assume that a similar high will be reached in the next ten years, because of the severity of the depression brought about by the Great War and the probability of its influence extending well into the next decade.

O objetivo deste trabalho é pesquisar sobre as principais falhas apresentadas por revestimentos anticorrosivos modernos comumente empregados para proteção interna de tanques de armazenamento de produtos petroquímicos e avaliar a capacidade da técnica de correntes parasitas para a inspeção não destrutiva deste material. Nesse contexto, as vantagens e limitações da técnica são analisadas. A aquisição de dados foi realizada considerando as propriedades isolantes dos revestimentos nas condições como aplicado e também após o envelhecimento. Amostras foram preparadas com defeitos controlados inseridos no substrato de aço carbono a fim de simular defeitos de corrosão localizada sob o revestimento. A detecção dos defeitos foi avaliada nas amostras com diferentes espessuras e também com a presença de óxido de ferro no interior dos defeitos a fim de simular áreas de corrosão localizada. Através da comparação entre os resultados obtidos no C-Scan original e após o processamento de imagem, foi possível observar uma melhoria significativa na eliminação dos falsos defeitos relacionados a variação da espessura inerente do revestimento pela limiarização multilevel. Também foi possível através do efeito do lift-off distinguir os defeitos reais e falsos defeitos. Nesse aspecto, a técnica de correntes parasitas se mostrou capaz de detectar defeitos neste tipo de material.

It is an honor to present the lecture in honor of Daniel C. Jackling, the developer of the technology of copper mining that we continue to use 100 years later. He made a dramatic breakthrough in the early part of this century in the development of bulk-mining methods for large, low-grade porphyry copper-sulfide ore bodies. At Magma Copper, we are particularly proud that the Jackling Award states we have "made significant contributions to technical progress." Before Jackling's time, copper mining had exploited with primitive equipment very high-grade underground ore bodies and high-grade open pits. During the 20th century, the situation changed. Three significant innovations occurred within about 10 years around the turn of the century. In 1903, Jackling's concept of large-scale mining with steam shovels and rail haulage was implemented at the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah. Eighty years after the introduction of rail haulage, the mine converted to truck haulage with large-capacity high-efficiency haul trucks and reduced the stripping ratio from 3.5:1 to less than 1:1.

Os cilindros de laminação sempre foram ferramentas utilizadas para estudos e desenvolvimentos técnicos em laminadores, uma vez que uma instabilidade em seu consumo pode indicar alterações ou problemas no processo. Especificamente nos laminadores de tiras a frio a instabilidade representada pelo aumento no consumo dos cilindros de trabalho indica alterações no processo, na matéria-prima ou até mesmo na qualidade do próprio cilindro. Na Laminação a Frio de Cubatão já foram realizados diversos trabalhos com foco na redução de consumo de cilindros, por se tratar de um insumo de custo elevado e influência direta na qualidade do material produzido. Com o mercado consumidor de aços planos cada vez mais exigente, foi necessário desenvolver novas qualidades de aço com resistências elevadas, espessuras menores e tolerâncias dimensionais mais restritas. Para atingir este nível de exigência tornou-se necessário o investimento em equipamentos modernos, e, sobretudo, promover alterações nos processos de fabricação para a sua adequação. São estas alterações que visam atender tais exigências que podem contribuir para o aumento do consumo de cilindros. Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as principais causas relacionadas ao aumento do consumo dos cilindros e buscar soluções para sua estabilização.

Finsch Mine is a kimberlite diamond mine located at Lime Acres in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine was founded in 1961 and started surface mining in 1964. Underground production commenced in 1990 using a modified blast-hole open stoping method for the mining of Blocks 1, 2 and 3. Block 4 is currently being mined as a block cave. The process of identifying and optimizing a method to mine the Block 5 orebody started in 1991, and in 2006 incline caving was identified as being technically feasible. This paper aims to document the process employed in developing this method by the Block 5 prefeasibility team as well as discuss the technical challenges encountered during this process. The paper commences with a history of Finsch Mine and highlights the complex geology and threat of sidewall failure that prompted the decision to use block caving as the mining method for Block 4. A literature study of mines that implemented mining methods upon which the incline cave was conceptualized is then presented. These practices were then used to form the basis for the designs on which the initial geotechnical modelling was done and built upon through an iterative process of modelling and design changes. The ventilation of the mining area, initial productivity simulation results, and the applicability of automation and comminution processes in the incline cave are also presented. The paper concludes with an investigation into some of the challenges of the mining method, and shows that that incline caving is a technical option available for further investigation in determining the optimal mining method to be employed at Block 5, Finsch Diamond Mine. "Laser ablation is a process that can be used to synthesize novel nanoscale particles as well as to deposit thin films of various materials. Usually, nanoscale particles and thin films are formed at relatively high and low pressures, respectively, inside the ablation chamber. This paper presents a mathematical model to predict the particle size distribution in the plasma generated during laser ablation. The model is developed by considering the effects of the laser-matter and laser-plasma interactions, the Stefan condition, and the discontinuity across the Knudsen layer. The nanoscale particles are found to be located at the central region of the plasma near the target. The particles have very high velocity and temperature. A good qualitative agreement is observed between the results of this model and experimental data. IntroductionRapid solidification produces novel microstructures whose atomic arrangements and/or chemical compositions are different from those of conventional materials. The conventional materials are either crystalline or amorphous. The crystalline materials have both short- and long-range orders, whereas the amorphous materials have only the shortrange order. The nanocrystalline materials have neither short- nor long-range orders, and for this reason, they exhibit novel properties which are important for synthesizing new materials. The atoms of a nanocrystal can be classified as ""crystal atoms"" and ""boundary atoms"", where the ""crystal atoms"" have the nearest-neighbor configurations similar to the lattice configuration, whereas the nearest-neighbor configurations of the ""boundary atoms"" differ from the lattice configurations 1. Various aspects of the nanoscale materials have been discussed in Refs. [1-7]."

The southeastern shores of Great Slave lake present a curious anomaly in geographical and geological exploration, in that an area so large and important, and withal so comparatively accessible, should nevertheless have remained unexplored, unmapped, and indeed almost unknown, until quite recent" times On their return from the famous journey to the mouth of the Coppermine, the band of Indians with whom he travelled led Samuel Hearne across Slave lake. He was the first white man to see that great body of water and it is rather curious that it should have been seen first from the north rather than from the south. Hearne's account of the lake is vague, and he made no attempt ?to map the part through which he travelled. About 30 years later John Franklin, on his first journey to the Arctic, crossed the lake from the mouth of the Slave river to the Yellow Knife river. Franklin's maps show all of his route in accurate detail, except that part of it which lay through Slave lake. In 1833-34, Captain, afterwards Sir George, Back made the first exploration of the eastern end of the lake. Captain Back was then on his way to the Arctic coast by way of the Great Fish river, and his Indian guides led him through Great Slave lake by the route they had followed from time immemorial. This route, partly because of its directness, and partly because of its sheltered character, lay through the great mass of islands in the middle of the lake to the Talthei narrows, and thence along the sheltered north shore with its many coves and harbours. Pere Petitot made extensive journeys in Slave lake as well as other parts of the far north.

"The most common comminution testing methods and the associated analytical procedures provide average values and do not capture the variability in breakage behaviour of ore particles. Therefore, plant designs and process performance predictions use only average values; hence, the inherent variability that exists within an ore domain translates into variation in process performance. This paper discusses the drawbacks of using the average approach to impact comminution testing and plant design. It considers breakage intensity from a single-particle testing perspective. To clearly delineate breakage behaviour of each broken particle, an experimental technique using the JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) has been developed by which actual comminution energy per particle and breakage intensities were measured directly. Four different ore types in ranges of -45+37.5mm and -22.4+19mm were tested at three energy levels of 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 kWh/t and six energy levels of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0 kWh/t, respectively. Sieved results of individual particles, notionally, t5, t10 and t50 showed the presence of large variability in their breakage behaviour, which was not captured by the standard JK impact breakage testing approach. In addition, the original JKMRC model is modified by introducing a third parameter, ‘Emint10’ which describes the minimum energy required to produce the minimum percent t10 for a given ore type and its significance is tested statistically. These results suggest that the analysis of breakage variability may lead to more robust plant designs. Perhaps, the most useful insight from this work is to extend single particle breakage model developed by JKMRC to a comminution percentile envelope which may provide a more detailed picture of ore breakage variability. INTRODUCTION Rock consists of mineral grains, pores, voids and cracks that may differ markedly in size/density which make rock a heterogeneous material by nature. The degree of heterogeneity in rock affects its breakage characteristics where these variations increase local differential strain and stress within a stressed rock (Scholz, 1968) and it depends on many factors such as rock genesis, alterations, etc. One important aspect of this heterogeneous feature is presence of a large amount of experimental scatter in rock breakage results when considered from a quantitative perspective (Bieniawski, 1967; Liu, Roquete, Kou, & Lindqvist, 2004)."

If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1, 1942, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7207.3/ The list of that date was complete as to equipment then available and in current use. Information Circular 7240,4/ published as a supplement thereto, listed equipment approved curing the calendar year 1943. The present list is another supplement covering approvals issued during the calendar year 1943. The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification. Thus, Information Circular 7207 gave 19 drills and drilling machines on the Bureau's active list. No additional approvals were given in 1942, but the three issued in 1943 bring the total to 22. Item 102, under Loading Machines and Conveyors, also appeared in Information Circular 7207, and items 120 and 124 appeared in Information Circular 7240. These numbers are repeated here to show that approvals were granted during 1943 for additional voltages on machines previously listed for one voltage only. Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found upon inspection and test to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal-mining industry. The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy, as well as in those that may become so, is earnestly recommended in the interests of safety. 7253. Arkhangelsky, A. D. Geological Results of the General Magnetometric and Gravimetric Surveys of the U.S.S.R. (in Russian). Internat. Geol. Cong., Rep. of the 17th Sess., Moscow-Leningrad, 1937, vol. 1, Moscow, 1939, pp. 241-250. Geophysical methods have been used in the U.S.S.R. to study geological problems. Such is the case of the general magnetometric and gravimetric surveys made jointly by the Main Physical Observatory, Main Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, and Main Office of Geophysical Prospecting. Some institutions supplied the data, others processed them. Geological interpretation was made by the author. (1) Regional magnetic anomalies in the plains of the U.S.S.R. are traceable to the folded substratum overlain by sedimentary rocks; these anomalies promise to yield data characterizing the substratum in respect to strike and depth. Anomalies in European U.S.S.R. suggest that the pre-Cambrian -substratum of the East European plateau consists of elements of different ages. In the most ancient of them, the main strike of the folding is almost latitudinal; in the younger ones, the folding is oriented in the meridian. (2) The Faye and Bouguer gravity anomalies are caused primarily by differences in the density of rocks composing the upper crust and by unknown processes producing changes of density at depth; these processes are not connected with isosiatic movements. The anomalies in the European and adjoining Asiatic U.S.S.R. promise to indicate the volume of the pre-Cambrian massif of the east-European plateau and to clarify the interrelations between the Ural, Tian-Shan, and Donetz Basin folding systems, as well as between the Dnieper-Donetz depression and the mid-European depression. - V. O presente trabalho estudou a influência de alguns tratamentos térmicos sobre a microestrutura e as propriedades mecânicas de um aço microligado visando à adequação de parâmetros que o classifiquem como um ao do tipo API X65 paraaplicação na prospecção e condução de óleo e gás. Diferentes ciclos de tratamentos térmicos envolvendo normalização, têmpera e revenimento foram aplicados a amostras deste aço. Estas foram submetidas a ensaios de tração, dureza Vickers e impacto Charpy, além de terem sido microestruturalmente caracterizadas com o auxílio de microscopia ótica e eletrônica de varredura. Observou-se que as microestruturas e propriedades mecânicas foram fortemente influenciadas pelos tratamentos estudados. Entretanto, apenas a amostra temperada e revenida atendeu integralmente aosrequisitos para o grau API X65no que diz respeito às propriedades mecânicas.Estaamostratambémapresentou maior a tenacidade ao impacto, o que está associado ao alívio de tensões e à decomposição da martensitae da bainita em carbonetos de ferro e ferrita. A amostra normalizada apresentou microestrutura constituída por perlita e ferrita, possuindo assim os menores limites de resistência mecânica e a maior ductilidade. Já nas espécies normalizada-temperada, assim como na simplesmente temperada, observou-semartensita e bainitacomo principais constituintes, supondo-se a presença de uma pequena fração de constituinte MA.

Under the requirement to define the economic advantages of using hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, a broad-scoped project was initiated to quantify the costs associated with operating fuel cell vehicles and diesel vehicles. While ventilation savings are clearly an advantage for the former, a complete and detailed analysis of this and other operational and capital cost elements was undertaken in order to provide the mining industry with factual information in considering the changeover from one technology to another. This paper outlines the results of the investigations to date defining the costs/benefits associated with capital purchases, operations (electrical/diesel, mine air heating fuel, ventilation, openings, surface and underground infrastructure, maintenance, labour, etc.), delivery of energy, regulatory obligations, and mine production. Considerations are given to the type and size of a mining operation, the depth, and location in North America. Significant ventilation power, equipment, and infrastructure savings are possible with the application of fuel cells for shallower mine applications. At depth, where heat is an issue, there is a reduction in benefit. Specific qualifiers such as minimum air velocities, dust dilution, shaft, and heating system velocity limits must be considered on an individual mine basis. While the capital cost for fuel cell mining equipment is currently higher than diesel versions, the high cost of fuel cells is anticipated to be reduced significantly in the near future with the intensification of manufacturing. In either case, the operational savings would probably be sufficient to balance the supplementary capitalization costs. Comprehensive reports have been issued.

Auger operations produced 14 million tons of coal in 1974, or approximately 5% of all surface mined coal. It was the most efficient of all coal mining methods, producing 40.0 tons per man-day. Exhibit 1.1 gives a breakdown of productivity of all coal mining methods. However, compared to other methods, the coal recovery rate is relatively low. For example, a triple-headed auger in a 35-inch seam would recover approximately 50% of the coal in the seam as compared to a 90 to 95% recovery rate for strip mining and a 55 to 65% recovery rate for deep-mining. The low auger recovery rate is due to the circular cuts and pillars left in the seam.
