The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on Fe-based alloys using Si and Al additions to reduce the Cr required for heat-resisting appli-cations. Part of this research is being done to evaluate alloys containing (8-10)Cr-(10-14)Ni-(0-8.5)Si-(0-4) Al to determine which of these alloys have austenitic structures, as well as fabrication properties and oxidation resistance sufficient to substitute for type 304 stainless steel. Based on initial results, an Fe-lOCr-11Ni-5Si alloy and an Fe-8Cr-13Ni-5Si alloy were selected for evaluation of oxidati.on, stress rupture, and tensile properties. Both alloys have oxidation resistance at 7000 and 8000 C that is better than that of type 304 stainless steel. The stress rupture strengths are less than that of type 304 stainless steel but significantly better than that of commercial heat-resisting steels with similar Cr contents. Yield strengths of the alloys were equivalent to that of type 304. Both alloys had high tensile strengths comparable to those of stainless steels that transform to martensite during straining (e.g., type 301). These alloys have weld-hot-cracking resistance comparable to that of type 304 stainless steel. This initial study shows that Si has potential as a substitute for Cr in stainless steels for heat-resisting applications.

The proper transfer of roof loads from props and bolts to ribs and pillars can result in appreciable savings. The author shows how to plan such load reduction in underground mines. For openings in bedded rocks, analyzed by simple beam theory, it has been shown that roof loads can be shifted from one support to another.&apos; This transfer is effected by controlling the relative deflection of adjacent supports. If this action is used to reduce loads in the props or bolts and increase them in the ribs or pillars, it could be productive of economies averaging 30 pct. Such savings can be realized by: 1) using smaller artifical supports such as props and bolts, and 2) increasing loads in the rib to induce eventual failure for longwall caving. Since the rib is relatively load-insensitive, it provides a natural load sink. However, caution must be used in applying such permissive deflections, for while the supports are being handled properly, the stresses in the roof itself are very sensitive to such manipulations.1 An underground opening overlain by a relatively thin immediate roof, and a thick main roof, is usually laid out as shown in Fig. 1. The total open span (T) between pillars or ribs is calculated on the basis of the main roof, and the secondary spans (L) on the basis of the immediate roof, so that a complete accounting of the existing loads is made. For this purpose the immediate roof is treated as a uniformly loaded continous beam, which is an indeterminate structure as shown in Fig. 2(A). The term systematic supports places the following two restrictions on the continuous beam: 1) Spans between all supports are equal: uniformity of spans. 2) Loads on all supports (excepting ribs) are equal: uniformity of supports. The usual mode of analysis of such a structure by beam theory is to divide it up into a series of simply supported beams with end moments as shown in Fig. 2(B)2 The problem now is to transfer a maximum roof load to the rib from the span immediately adjacent to it by permitting its support to deflect, and yet not fail the roof. Once this has been done, the load can be equalized on all other supports by permitting further degrees of relative deflection. It is necessary, therefore, to determine an expression for the constant load on each support, and the required deflections, in terms of properties of the roof. For TBM tunneling no visual inspection of excavated ground is possible. This may hinder the high-speed excavation, particularly in complex ground conditions. The TBM Excavation Control System was developed for better prediction of geological conditions ahead of the tunnel face during excavation. The seismic reflector tracing produces volumetric images of anomalies in the ground in “near-real time.” These images are verified using logging data from pilot boring and TBM driving data, to improve reliability and precision of ground mapping. Also good correlation was obtained between the rock strength index computed from TBM data, and one derived from volumetric seismic images.

In the solvent extraction process, also referred to as liquid-liquid extraction, the clarified uranium-pregnant sulfuric acid leach solution is contacted with an organic extractant dispersed in kerosene; the uranium enters the organic phase and associates itself with the organic extractants. Simultaneously an-ions or cations, as the case may be, leave the organic extractant phase and enter the aqueous phase. The two phases are then allowed to separate by virtue of their immiscibility. Based on the data available, a generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the sodium carbonate scrub liquor of acid leach uranium mills using secondary and tertiary amine extractants is presented, as is another generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the bleed stream of alkaline leach uranium mill circuits. Such economic appraisal as can be made at this stage of the development is also indicated. Molybdenum occurs in most uranium ores. Whether the uranium is solubilized by the acid leach route or by the alkaline leach process, some of the molybdenum present in the ore is solubilized along with the uranium. Molybdenum in uranium mill pregant solutions may cause processing difficulties, among which may be mentioned the poisoning of resins, the precipitation of organo-molybdenum complexes, or the build-up of molybdenum in recycle streams. While the uranium milling industry has been successful in applying measures to overcome the problems arising from the presence of molybdenum in the circuits, such measures nevertheless add to the cost of producing uranium yellow cake concentrate. Table I shows the analysis of typical uranium pregnant leach solutions. Uranium recovery by solvent extraction is presently practiced only in conjunction with acid leach circuits, and it may be noted that of about 16,000 tons of uranium ore daily processed by sulfuric acid leach, more than half of this tonnage follows the solvent extraction route. Uranium mills leaching ore with sodium carbonate-sodium bicarbonate solution (the so-called alkaline leach circuit) do not use solvent extraction. In this case the uranium pregnant solution is sufficiently pure to permit the direct precipitation of uranium concentrate with subsequent recycle of the alkaline leach solution. While solvent extraction procedures may be developed which are economically attractive for the alkaline leach uranium process, this has so far not been the case. The earlier uranium mill solvent extraction circuits used organo-phosphate extraction reagents, among which di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid was popular. It should be borne in mind that uranium in its sulfuric acid leach solution exists in an equilibrium involving uranium in both anion and cation forms: uo + 2S0 = [uo2(so4)2] For this reason uranium may be extracted by either cation extractors or anion extractors and this is likewise true of molybdenum. However, the organo-phosphate extractants also load ferric iron which is usually present in the uranium acid leach solution. For this reason, it is necessary to reduce this solution substantially to the ferrous state ahead of solvent extraction using organo-phosphate reagents. The amines, being anion extractors, selectively reject iron and thus render the iron reduction step unnecessary. A coal waste disposal dam failed on Buffalo Creek near Saunders, West Virginia, on February 26, 1972. This accident resulted in the loss of 125 lives, left over 4000 people homeless, and resulted in millions of dollars in damage to several downstream communities. As a result of this tragic event, major changes occurred in the mine waste disposal practices used by the U.S. coal industry. This paper summarizes changes in U.S. coal-waste disposal practices in the nearly 35 years since the Buffalo Creek dam failure and identifies safety issues that need to be addressed for continued improvement. While many organizations and individuals have played roles in the improvements that have occurred, this paper focuses on the role played by MSHA and its predecessor agencies.

"Since the introduction of pulverized coal as a substitute fuel for natural gas in the various types of heating furnaces used, in steel mills, a number of fires and explosions have occurred, resulting in the loss of life and property.As one of the primary functions of the Bureau of Mines is to conduct investigations in the utilization of mineral substances with a view to increasing safety in the use thereof, it was deemed advisable to investigate the hazards involved in the industrial use of pulverized coal and, if possible, to devise methods of preventing future accidents arising therefrom. The knowledge of the explosive qualities of coal dust which the Bureau has gained in studies affecting dust explosions in coal mines was of material assistance in these investigations.Several plants were visited in which either fires or explosions had occurred, and data obtained as to the probable cause of the accidents.There was found to exist, among some of those employed about the furnaces, a lack of knowledge of the explosive and inflammable qualities of powdered coal.A small stream of pulverized coal leaking down from a defective joint in a coal transport line did not attract much attention, whereas, had a leak in a natural gas line occurred -wider similar circumstances, no doubt it would have had immediate attention.As a matter of fact, if by any means the duet cloud should come in contact with an open flame or hot metal, the effects would be as disastrous as if it had been gas.This is exceedingly well illustrated by an accident which came to the writer's attention. In the system used at this particular plant, the pulverized coal is transported to the furnace through compressed-air lines. The fuel is fed from a storage bin to a blowing tank in quantities as desired, after which compressed air is admitted and the powdered coal blown to the furnaces. At the time of the accident some repairs were being made to the tank, and it was supposed that the air pressure had been entirely released as the pressure gage stood at zero. There was, however, one or two pounds air pressure remaining and when one of the connections was taken off, a cloud of dust was blown across the room, 30 or 40 feet towards the drier furnace where it came in contact with some live coals. Immediately the entire room was filled with flame which rolled back and forth over a specs 50 feet or so in length."

The involvement of concerned parties in all aspects of the Lihir Project from an early stage has promoted good relations between all groups. Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

Ferritas são compostos cerâmicos que apresentam propriedades magnéticas, sendo estas dependentes da sua estrutura cristalina. Dentre as ferritas, a do tipo Ni-Zn é uma das mais promissoras, em virtude da microestrutura e das propriedades magnéticas deste material. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a microestrutura e propriedades magnéticas da ferrita Ni-Zn dopada com íons (TR) Sm3+. A ferrita Ni-Zn-Sm foi obtida pelo método dos precursores poliméricos, a partir da dissolução do ácido cítrico, nitrato de ferro, nitrato de níquel, nitrato de zinco, nitrato de samário e etilenoglicol. A resina obtida foi pirolisada a 350°C/2h com taxa de aquecimento de 10°C/min. e calcinada a 650°C/3h com taxa de aquecimento de 10°C/min. O material resultante foi caracterizado por difração de raios-X (DRX), microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e magnetometria de amostra vibrante (VSM). Os resultados mostraram a formação de fase única da ferrita Ni-Zn-Sm, com partículas aglomeradas e características magnéticas de material macio "soft", com baixa coercividade (0,189 kOe) e magnetização de saturação (47,699 emu/g).

"Partial reduction reactions in the Ni-AI-O system, starting with the spinel compound NiAI20 4, are used to form metal-ceramic microstructures. By suitable choice of processing parameters, such as reduction temperature, oxygen partial pressure and time, two different morphologies of nearly pure Ni particles, equiaxed and rod-like, form within a ceramic matrix, which is either a-A12O3 or a metastable ""defect spinel"". Electron microscopy studies were performed for microstructural characterization, phase identification and chemical analysis. The fracture toughness of the Ni-AI2O 3 mixture was significantly improved with respect to that of the original spinel phase. The important issues that must be addressed to form useful metal-ceramic microstructures by partial reduction reactions rue discussed. It is shown that cracking at the original spinel grain boundaries, likely due to the large volume changes associated with the reduction reaction, can be avoided by the addition of small amounts of ZrO2• Initial results illustrating effect of ZrO2 on the microsuuctures are presented.IntroductionEngineering materials used in load bearing circumstances, particularly under extreme conditions (e.g. high temperatures or stresses), generally are formulated with complex microsuuctures. Such composite-like materials can possess properties unobtainable by either of the individual constituents. With metal-ceramic composites, for example, a material can be obtained with an optimum combination of the low density and high strength of the ceramic, and the toughness of the metal. For high temperature service, where demanding conditions are often present, for example, inside jet turbine engines, a successful new material must have low density, high Young's modulus as well as good oxidation resistance, strength, fracture toughness, creep and fatigue resistance. The candidates include intermetallic compounds, and metal-ceramic, intermetallic-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic composites."

La presente investigación señala la etapa de creación de las organizaciones de seguridad y de SOGESA, funcionamiento, orientación inicial y el programa mínimo de ejecución inmediata y progresiva. El programa de seguridad se inició en 1980. La técnica impuesta para este programa surge de un compendio de la experiencia desarrollado en programas anteriores. La aplicación se dio en la industria metalúrgica de Cerro de Pasco, y luego en la industria azucarera con la Grace Co. de la hacienda Cartavio, no lográndose definir el programa por completo. En este sentido, se perfila el planeamiento de un programa mínimo a través de un estudio a corto plazo de la situación real en SOGESA y se precisa el lugar que ocupa la seguridad e higiene industrial dentro de una organización. Asimismo se describe las necesidades mínimas del equipo de seguridad y protección, como la difusión de la creación de un conciencia de seguridad en cada trabajador a través de charlas, exhibiciones y reuniones con jefes de servicio y supervisores. También se desarrollan otros elementos estructurales de seguridad como las inspecciones, brigadas de voluntarios de seguridad, estadísticas, campaña contra incendios e higiene industrial para la comunidad, respectivamente.

The 5-mile long Bay Tunnel is a major water supply facility to be constructed under the San Francisco Bay and adjacent marshlands between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward Fault to the east. The tunnel will have a two-pass lining system consisting of a watertight precast concrete segmental initial lining and a welded steel pipe final lining. Considering the Bay Tunnel?s location between two major active faults, the design earthquake produces a significant peak ground acceleration estimated at approximately 0.6g. To develop a design that can achieve the seismic performance objectives, full dynamic seismic analyses were performed using site-specific earthquake time histories. The analyses considered soil-structure interaction and an evaluation of the transverse and longitudinal effects of the design earthquake. This paper describes the seismic analyses and the design measures recommended to minimize potential adverse effects of the design earthquake on the tunnel final lining.

Two small coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, situated close under the equator, and formerly classed among the Line Islands, have, during the last three or four years risen into prominence owing to the valuable deposits of phosphate of lime discovered on them.The deposits of Ocean and Pleasant Islands are under the control of the Pacific Islands Company (1902) Limited, of London and, Sydney, and the high grade of the phosphate, together with the exceptionally favourable facilities for mining this mineral, of which there are several millions of tons on these islands, give this company advantages which enable them to command the Australian and New Zealand markets, and also to make large contracts with Japan and other countries. Both islands, as far as surface indications are concerned, are entirely constructed of coral, with phosphate on the top from the highest points to the present sea level, there being no sign of volcanic rocks, with the exception of a few pieces of drift pumice on the coast.Banaba (Paanopa according to. the Admiralty charts), also known as Ocean Island, was discovered in 1804. In an effort to advance the science underlying modern coal pillar stability analysis, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are currently involved in research aimed at better understanding the impact of an in-seam rock parting on the strength of coal pillars. The purpose of this study is to determine a suitable virtual mining height that could be applied using current pillar stability analysis tools. To accomplish this, the boundary element model LaModel was used to back analyze data collected on pillar performance in a room-and-pillar panel at the Maple Eagle Mine located in Southern West Virginia. In a previous work, data collected from borehole pressure cells (BPCs) and extensometers were taken from three instrumentation sites. Data collected from the back bleeders were used to measure the rear abutment stresses, and data collected from two instrumentation sites in the wraparound bleeder were used to measure the front and side abutment stresses as well as the peak strength and performance of the slabbed leave pillar. The utilization of two nearly identical instrumentation sites in the wrap-around bleeder provided much needed repeatability of the obtained measurements. In this study, the data collected from BPCs at the three instrumentation sites was calibrated to match the Bieniawski pillar stress gradient. To model the measured pillar behavior, the LaModel program was selected due to its capability of being directly comparable to the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) and Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) programs. The model was then calibrated to match the measured abutment extent and abutment stress. Finally, the model was validated by reducing the modeled mining height until the yielding of the slabbed leave pillars in the model matched what was measured in the field. The final calibrated mining heights show that a reduction of the shale parting thickness, not including any clay layers, of 52% is applicable. This research study provides the first known measurement of the ARMPS/ACPS “50% Rule” and its applicability to this panel of the Maple Eagle Mine. This finding provides a proof of concept and could have significant implications for future research.

Incentivado pela diversificação dos produtos em aço, a demanda por graus cuja composição química esteja próxima da faixa peritética, tais como os aços HSLA (High Strength Low Alloy) e AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel), tem aumentado. As crescentes exigências nas propriedades mecânicas e a redução de custo nas ligas são as razões para que esses aços sejam projetados próximos à faixa peritética, com o teor de carbono entre 0,09 e 0,16%. A produção de placas do aço ASTM A588-B, com o teor de carbono visado igual a 0,10%, apresentava expressiva variação do Nível de Aço no Molde (Ou Mould Level Fluctuation, MLF), aumentando a probabilidade de ocorrência de “Break-Out” (Rompimento de Pele) e a redução da qualidade de superfície das placas, com eventual ocorrência de Trincas Longitudinais. Outra limitação é a impossibilidade de troca de largura das placas, dependente da estabilidade do processo de Lingotamento Contínuo. Serão discutidas as ações tomadas visando a redução do MLF, baseada em alterações no Projeto de Liga, a comparação entre variáveis-chave do processo de Lingotamento Contínuo de Placas em dois cenários de Projeto de Liga além dos impactos em características de Propriedades Mecânicas do produto laminado, no caso bobinas processadas em Laminador Steckel.

The Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI) was founded in 1949 to fill mining industry and government needs for minerals research and development. The operations of scores of mines, mills, and plants around the world are based on the results of work done by the Research Institute. Among other things, the Research Institute conducts studies in geology, mine planning, mineralogy, size reduction, minerals processing, and hydrometallurgical techniques in extractive metallurgy. Many CSMRI projects also involve energy and environmental considerations. What follows is a summary of some of the studies in which the Research Institute has been and is currently involved, as well as some comments on trends and developments in the industry.

This presentation reports survey findings that aim to modernize the definition and understanding of the term 'mining.' The survey, conducted via LinkedIn in Winter 2024, garnered responses from a diverse group of individuals, including current or former employees of mining or exploration companies, mining consulting firms, service providers, supplier firms, as well as students and retirees with industry experience. The data, ethically approved by the University of Saskatchewan, offers valuable insights into satisfaction levels within the mining sector and suggests an expansion of the identifying characteristics of definitions of mining. This marks the third CIM gaining insights paper by Beneteau, Espley, and Nyabeze, following previous works on 'Career Satisfaction for Women in Mining' (2010) and 'Mentorship Initiatives in the Canadian Mining Industry' (2018*)."

Typical sedimentary sequences overlying coal seams consist of interbedded sandstones, siltstones, shales, and rider coal seams. In many surface coalmine settings, these sediments are saturated; and prior dewatering of them is necessary for effective and economic mining, including the stacking of saturated spoils. Such sedimentary sections usually have a very low vertical hydraulic conductivity that does not allow them to drain in a timely manner prior to their being stripped. One potential solution is installation of drainwells. Drainwells are small diameter wells that can collect water laterally from the various more permeable layers in the overburden and then gravity drain it to a lower layer – often the coal seam being mined – where it can be removed by pumping wells or sumps located in the bottom of the pit. A ground-water flow model utilizing the 3-dimensional finite element code MINEDW has been used to evaluate the effectiveness of usingdrainwells in a hydrogeologic setting that is typical of the Powder River Basin. A series of numerical simulations were completed using various combinations and spacings of drainwells and pumping wells to dewater the overburden and coal seams. The numerical simulations suggest that drainwells can be a very effective method of overburden dewatering.
