A fabricação de componentes para conformação mecânica possui uma gama de exigências devido aos esforços cíclicos, como por exemplo, fadiga térmica. Devido à capacidade de formar geometrias complexas e usinar metais de alta dureza, a eletroerosão (EDM- Eletrical Discharge Machining) possui eficiência na produção destas matrizes. O estudo da integridade superficial do material erodido torna-se importante para avaliarmos qual são as condições ideais para tratamentos termoquímicos que visam a otimização da superfície da matriz usinada. Neste trabalho, foi investigada a integridade superficial do AISI H13, utilizadas para a fabricação de matrizes de forjamento a quente. Foram avaliadas a rugosidade e camada afetada pela técnica de Perfilometria Mecânica,Microscopia Ótica (MO) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). Verificaram-se diferentes superfícies, em diferentes parâmetros de usinagem e profundidades estabelecidas, observandose a subsuperfície do material.

"Timing and charge sequence are very important for optimized blast design. Traditional nonelectricinitiation systems have moved the industry toward a system of delays consisting of hole-to-hole androw-to-row timing sequences that mimic the application of nonelectric surface delays or dual delayinitiator systems that have been prevalent in the blasting industry for many years. The increasedutilization of electronic detonators allows for the use of Regular Rhythmic Timing (RRT) utilizing onlyone delay between charges and a selected charge firing sequence. The hole to hole and row to row (HHRR) timing method has been utilized for blasting optimization and allows for simplistic changes to the tie in phase of the blasting sequence. When using this traditional timing methodology, for some specific cases related to the number holes and rows, crowding occurs in the delay between charges with subsequent increase in the peak particle velocity (PPV) produced by the blast. This is in contrast to RRT where the timing between the delays remains constant."

(Paper presented at the Institution of Mining Engineers' general meeting held in London on 8th June 1916.) It was shown in the last Supplement to the Registrar-General's Reports, in connection with the census of 1901, that the general death-rate among colliers was considerably lower than in the great majority of occupations but that there is an exception to this in the case of colliers above the age of 55. Examination of the statistics finds that the excessive death-rate among old colliers is to a large extent only apparent, and that the real excess of bronchitis from which they have suffered has greatly diminished. It is concluded: (1) that good ventilation is of considerable importance to the health and continued working efficiency of miners, as well as to their safety from accidents; and (2) that there is no real statistical evidence of harm resulting from the inhalation of coal-dust or shale-dust in the quantities ordinarily breathed by miners, and a strong presumption that the dust they breathe protects them against serious dangers from bacilli that are removed from the lungs by the dust-clearing cell mechanisms

McLanahan RSS14x50 scrubber screens have individually processed over 50 Mt of Pilbara iron ore. The first stage of separation in these plants with abrasive, high specific gravity, large lumps is an extremely arduous duty with high wear rates. With the Scrubber Screen layout this occurs in the attached trommel section. The initial supply of the replaceable trommel panels were of steel-backed rubber with a service life of approx. six weeks. Site Personnel established a goal of 26 week wear life in conjunction with 100 per cent reliability and while field trials were undertaken using a variety of hardened and cast steels that demonstrated wear life to the nominated requirement some unpredicted failures still occurred. With a long evaluation time and challenges to create repeatable conditions with field testing, a purpose built test unit was designed and constructed to allow controlled evaluation of a number of materials and designs. During 2016 tests were conducted with eight different materials, of varying thickness to simulate impact conditions and a number of aperture profiles to evaluate both impact and abrasion effects. From these results two designs were selected for full scale implementation to confirm the nominated goals. Stationary air pollutant sources established prior to the New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) are not, at present, subject to federal emissions regulations. However, proposed legislation could require many existing stationary sources to reduce emissions. This paper will report upon the laboratory work undertaken to date by B&W to commercialize a limestone system for sulfur capture both in pulverized coal and cyclone coal-fired utility boilers. Updates will be provided on the US EPA/State of Ohio/Ohio Edison/B&W sponsored pulverized coal full-scale limestone injection demonstration, and on the EPRI/Baltimore Gas 8 Electric, Atlantic Electric/B&W sponsored laboratory-scale cyclone coal limestone injection investigations.

For the extension of the Paper Mill of Parenco in Renkum, the Netherlands, the application of a pile foundation was required. The demands for this pile foundation were very explicit a vibration free and soil displacing pile systems with low allowable settlement. Another important aspect was the total amount of piles (originally over 1600 auger piles) which had to be executed within 3 months, in very difficult and unhomogeneous soil. Based upon these conditions the Tubex Grout Injection Pile was chosen to be used for this project. This system involves the drilling of a steel tube with a conical pile shoe while grout is injected at the point simultaneously, creating a mixed-in-place layer around the tube. INTRODUCTION After extensive marketing, the board of directors of Parenco, decided to a large extension of the production capacity of its paper mill by building a new production building called Paper Mill 1 or PM-1. The new PM-1 extension had to be constructed beside the existing PM-2 because of limited terrain. The site is located right between the Rhine river and Renkum, approximately 15 kilometers (10 miles) west from Arnhem (see figure 1). The construction involved the building of the PM-1 extension of approximately 250 meters (820 ft.) long by 40-60 metres wide (130-200 ft.). The main structure was to be constructed of precast concrete beams and columns.

A soldagem de peças de aço por arco submerso é um dos processos mais tradicionalmente usados na fabricação de componentes estruturais. A microestrutura do metal de solda é importante na definição das suas propriedades mecânicas, sendo a ferrita acicular um microconstituinte capaz de conferir à solda altos níveis de resistência mecânica e tenacidade. A nucleação da ferrita acicular depende da presença de inclusões não metálicas no metal de solda. No presente trabalho fez-se a caracterização microestrutural do metal de solda preparados com diferentes aportes térmicos. Lâminas finas foram observadas por microscopia eletrônica de transmissão, que possibilitou determinar alguns parâmetros morfológicos e químicos das partículas e a sua relação com a nucleação das ripas de ferrita acicular. Verificou-se que partículas irregulares com maior tamanho, mais ricas em titânio quando formadas com maior energia de soldagem, apresentam maior probabilidade de servirem como sítio preferencial para nucleação da ferrita acicular, se comparadas às partículas mais lisas e menores.

GOLD has played a part in the development of Australia. The total yield exceeds SIX hundred million pounds sterling, while the glamour of gold-mining and the unfailing demand for the product have enhanced its influence. The production is still considerable, but the yield is less than one-quarter of that twenty years previously, while the number of men employed has dropped from 70,000 to 11,000. Not only has there been a marked decline in production, but it is anticipated that thisdecline will continue, and continue more markedly. It is therefore desirable to ascertain the causes of the decline and inquire into means for diminishing or preventing it.The problem under discussion is far from being only local. Finlay states: The grand feature of the history of the business has been the progress of an economic cycle unfavourable to gold milling. The USA yield fell from $101,000,000 to $44,000,000.South Afriea has for some time produced one-half of the world's gold; yet in the Mining and Scientific Press of 11th February, IH22, General Smuts is quoted as saying that if the premium disappeared entirely 24 out of 34 mines would shut down. Aspects of blast vibrations, damage mechanisms and the influence of rock quality on damage severity are reviewed and results presented from a monitoring programme in which the rock mass rating for six tunnels was determined. The peak particle velocity induced in the tunnels during open-pit blasting was measured and the tunnels were inspected visually for fresh damage after each blast. The results suggest that the quality of rock in which an excavation is situated has an influence on the level of ground vibration to which it can be subjected without sustaining damage. This means that the use of a single limiting value of peak particle velocity, as in the blast damage criteria for residential structures, is not ideal and may result in damage to excavations in poorer-quality rock masses

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. "INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Concentrator is located 28 kilometers east of the city of Timmins, Ontario. Two types of ore are treated; 'A' type, a copper-zinc-low silver ore producing copper and zinc concentrates, and 'C' type, a copper-lead-zinc-high silver ore producing copper, lead and zinc concentrates.The ore is processed at a combined rate of 12,400 metric tonnes per day through four parallel grinding and flotation divisions. Three divisions treat the 'A' type ore and the fourth treats the 'C' ore. Each division is fed from its own fine ore bin.This paper reviews the grinding section with specific emphasis on grinding media consumption and the factors affecting it as related to 'A' type ore. At Kidd Creek there was an awareness that grinding media consumption varied on a weekly and monthly basis. The reasons for this variation was usually attributed to ore hardness as evidenced by short term variations in the circuit feedrate and head assays. However, there has been a diversity of opinion published in recent years regarding the factors contributing to steel consumption. This initiated a study of historical Kidd Creek operating data, from the period 1970 to 1986 inclusive, to determine the effect of various operating parameters on media consumption. The results of the study could then be used as a baseline for future media consumption testwork."

The ability of an explosive to break rock is influenced considerably by the extent of confinement in the blasthole. It is believed that confinement is improved by the use of adequate stemming. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the first and second stages of developing a stemming performance testing rig for small diameter boreholes. The rig was used to compare and contrast the performance of different designs of products. The results showed that different stemming products have differences in terms of their functionality, which can have a major impact on the efficiency of rock breaking. Two test procedures were used, one through the exclusive use of compressed air and the second using a purpose-built high pressure test rig with small quantities of explosives. Both tests were used to identify and evaluate the ability of various stemming products to resist the escape of explosive gas through the collar of a blasthole. An investigation was done to determine the types of stemming products most commonly used in South African underground hard rock mines, and these products were used during the tests. The first stage of tests using compressed air only did not prove adequate to predict with certainty the pressure behaviour in the borehole of a particular product under high pressure conditions. The purpose-built high pressure test rig also did not prove to be a very effective tool to test stemming products under high pressure conditions. The test rig incorporated only the effect of gas pressure on the stemming product, and excluded the effect of the shock wave. This study therefore proved that to take into account only the gas pressure generated in the blasthole is not sufficient to effectively test stemming product performance.

The Michigan Dept. of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large-volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a rehtive aid in assessing rock strength is reported. These past several years have been a period of unprecendented construction and commercial expansion. Vast private manufacturing complexes and government road, power, and office projects are being built or are in planning stages. Nearly everywhere, municipalities are expanding outward and upward. Many towns are developing into cities and many cities are displaying new skylines, and the building boom shows little sign of slowing down.

The enterprises based upon the industrial minerals are diversified in geologic habit, mining systems, processing techniques and marketing methods. Nevertheless, in 1972 these enterprises faced many of the same frustrations and hopes and knotty problems and crucial decisions. Volume and profits were generally improved but were uneven in extent and effect. The U.S. cement industry, for example, was unable to meet demand in major markets. It was constricted by a frozen low-level price structure, faced expensive pollution control measures and watched heavy imports penetrating its markets from several European nations, Mexico and Canada.

Geological discontinues in the coalbed, such as faults, sandstone channels, permeability facies, lithotype changes, and large scale partings in the coal seam, can cause intermittent production problems or produce unexpected amounts of water or gas from degasification boreholes. These discontinuities not only can impact methane emissions into the mine workings, especially if they hinder proper and effective degasification of the coalbed but may act as conduits for methane flow from gassy strata into advancing mine workings. The effects of these discontinuities are still under debate by mining and gas production experts. This study presents a numerical investigation using reservoir simulations of the effects of partings and permeability facies and lithotype changes on the production performances of vertical and horizontal degasification boreholes, as well as the emissions during longwall operations. In this work, the grid block was designed in a multi-layer 3-D structure which enabled spatial descriptions of the geometries and properties of the discontinuities within the coal seam. The studied coal seam discontinuities and their properties were distributed arbitrarily within the model. Production was simulated by vertical and horizontal boreholes. Degasification boreholes operated two years prior to start of the mining. The results of this numerical study show that in coal seams with major heterogeneities and discontinuties, the geometry and location of the boreholes are important for improved gas production. These considerations are also important for controlling methane and water inflow into the working environment during longwall mining.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Stanford University operates the National Research Facility which is located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in Menlo Park, California. In order to improve and allow for enhanced experiments, the current facilities required expansion. A1500 foot long tunnel (20 ft wide by 21 ft high) and a 220 foot long underground cavern (49 ft wide by 32 ft high) were excavated through the Ladera Sandstone formation which is an intermediate geo-material with week rock properties. The overburden between surface and crown of the structures varies from 10 to 80 feet. The underground structures were excavated according to the principles of the NATM (New Austrian Tunnel Method). This paper addresses the challenges that were encountered during the construction phase of the project and how construction issues were resolved mutually by the owner, engineer and contractor. The implementation of geotechnical instrumentation, recorded data and interpretations, soil conditions and behavior encountered during construction are also presented.
