There was reported in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 5754/ a series of tests to determine the compressibility and bearing strength of specimens prepared from blocks of potash salt obtained from a mine near Carlsbad , N. Mex . The events leading up to the investigation were sketched in a foreword by George S. Rice , then chief mining engineer of the Bureau ( retired September 30 , 1937 ) ; this foreword also gives a discussion of the possibility of increasing the ultimate total recovery of the potash salt by " second mining" of pillars or by use of a longwall system . In June 1936 , Rice and the senior author visited Carlsbad with H. I. Smith , chief of the mining division of the Geological Survey , to observe mining then in progress and to discuss with the management of one of the mines records of convergence of roof and floor which they were obtaining . It developed that serious thought was being given to the possibility of roof failure resulting from shear at the faces of pillars . There was envisioned the danger of such cracks extending upward to water - bearing strata . Obviously , the simple compression tests of the potash salt then being made would throw no light on this question , and tests of assemblies of potash and roof salts would have to be made . In this connection it is to be remembered that in the mine no sharp division exists between the potash salt being recovered and the nearly pure halite which forms the roof . The interlocked crystalline structure is continuous , and there is merely a very rapid decrease in the proportion of sylvite in a short distance vertically . Figure 2 of Technical Paper 575 shows that two samples near the top of the salt being mined contained , respectively , 51 and 65 percent potassium chloride . Contrasted with this is an analysis of the roof salt given on page 24 of that publication , which showed only 3.6 percent potassium chloride . As the data given in Technical Paper 575 show , the roof salt is much less plastic than the potash salt . The immediate roof may then be thought of as a more rigid stratum of indefinite extent resting on and continuous with yielding supports and loaded uniformly at the rate of 900 to 950 pounds per square inch . Just what thickness of the salt should be considered as immediate roof is uncertain .

Keywords: thermodynamic, Ni-Co alloy powders, composition, fibrous The mathematics model of Ni(II)-Co(II)-C2O42?-NH3?H2O-H2O of thermodynamic equilibrium system has been developed theoretically according to the law of conservation of mass and the law of simultaneous equilibrium, and the logarithm concentration-pH (log[Me2+]T-pH) diagrams of this system have been made. The effect of ligand and pH value was studied. Two issues in coprecipitation route to synthesize fibrous nickel-cobalt alloy precursor powder, com-position and morphology which are a first priority, are addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and experiments. The results show that suitable pH value range of coprecipitation of nickel ions and cobalt ions in theory can be obtained to maintain fibrous, excellent compositonal homogeneity and stoichiometry in coprecipitation products. Experimental demonstration is also carried out.

Twelve millisecond delayed blasts in four limestone quarries in Iowa were instrumented with arrays of vertical velocity gages to determine if the direction of propagation through the rock or the method of initiation of the blast had any effect upon the level of vibration. Two gage arrays approximately 90° apart were used to test the effect of direction of propagation. The vibrations from blasts initiated by three methods were recorded. Vibration records from these tests were analyzed for peak particle velocity as a function of distance from the blast. The data are shown to fit a power Law equation. Direction of propagation is shown to affect the value of the exponent n. The effect of charge size per delay interval on the level of vibration is removed from the data by scaling the travel distance by the square root of the charge weight per delay period. The method of initiating the blasts is shown to have a strong effect upon the level of vibration and the spread in the data from one shot to another.

As argilas cauliníticas, popularmente conhecidas como de queima branca, possuem a coloração final dos seus produtos como principal característica. As jazidas desse tipo de argila não são encontradas com facilidade, sendo a prospecção de novos depósitos o principal desafio do setor cerâmico. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho é estudar as propriedades tecnológicas de uma argila caulinítica do município de Boa Saúde – RN. O trabalho foi iniciado com a coleta in loco da argila e, em seguida, seu destorroamento, cominuição e peneiramento em uma peneira ABNT 200 mesh (0,074mm). Após essa etapa, foram confeccionados trinta (30) corpos de prova utilizando uma prensa hidráulica com pressão de 21 MPa. As amostras ficaram em uma estufa por um período de 24 horas com temperatura de 100ºC para retirada da umidade. O processo de sinterização ocorreu em um forno do tipo mufla, sem atmosfera protetora, nas temperaturas de 850°C, 950°C e 1050°C, com taxa de aquecimento de 10°C/min e patamar de isoterma de 60 minutos. Em cada temperatura foram sinterizados dez (10) corpos de prova. Os ensaios tecnológicos realizados nas amostras foram os seguintes: absorção de água (AA%), retração linear (RL%), perda ao fogo (PF%), porosidade aparente (PA%) e massa específica aparente (MEA). Os resultados dos ensaios apontam que a argila estudada possui características que apontam sua utilização na fabricação de peças para os setores da cerâmica estrutural e revestimentos.

Cobalt mostly occurs as a minor, but valuable, constituent in most nickel and a few copper ores, however it is not generally found alone in commercially viable deposits. Its concentration and extraction are therefore intimately linked to the recovery of the primary metals and the major task for the metallurgist is to extract cobalt of commercial grade from a much larger mass of either nickel or copper and sometimes both. With a particular focus on Vale Inco?s operations, this paper provides a brief overview of the mineralogy of the main deposits being currently exploited that contain cobalt as a co or by-product. The concentration and then extraction to metal are reviewed and some advances released into the public domain are discussed.

Phase equilibria have been determined experimentally for pseudo-ternary sections of the form ?MnO?-(CaO+MgO)-(SiO2+Al2O3) with a fixed Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratio of 0.17 and MgO/CaO weight ratios of 0.25 and 0.17 respectively for temperatures in the range 1473-1673 K. The primary phase fields present for the MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.17 include manganosite (Mn,Mg,Ca)O; dicalcium silicate a-2(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2; merwinite 3CaO·(Mg,Mn)O·2SiO2; wollastonite [(Ca,Mg,Mn)O?SiO2]; diopside [(CaO,MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?SiO2]; tridymite (SiO2); tephroite [2(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2]; rhodonite [(Mn,Mg)O?SiO2] and melilite [2CaO?(MgO,MnO,Al2O3)?2(SiO2,Al2O3)]. For the section with MgO/CaO weight ratio of 0.25 the anorthite phase (CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2) is also present. The liquidus temperatures of ferro- and silico-manganese smelting slags have been determined. The liquidus temperatures at low MnO concentrations are shown to be principally dependent on the modified basicity weight ratio (CaO+MgO)/(SiO2+Al2O3).

MINING geology does not lend itself - very readily to a review embracing "improvements in methods," as perhaps do shop practices or laboratory procedures. The "methods" used in mining geology are simply the application of geology to mining; winning the ore, the handling of material, mechanical appliances, all belong strictly to mining proper, and have no place in a review of geology as applied to mining. A comprehensive review would necessarily cover a .very broad field, which could be subdivided into many -parts. "PURPOSE OF REPORTThe purpose of this report, which is the third of a. series on the coal mines of the Western States, is to give the findings of a study of the causes and methods of prevention of accidents from falls of root and coal in the mines of Lincoln County, Wyo. The three mines covered in this report, referred to as A. B. and C, account- for 9 per cent of the coal production in the county and nearly 9 per cent of the State's total production. For comparative purposes some statistical data are presented bearing upon the relation of injuries to their causes, to tonnage produced, to men employed, to days worked, and to days lost as the result of injuries.FATALITIES IN WYOMINGTo show the necessity for this study, Table 1 given the fatalities that occurred during 1928 in the bituminous—coal mines of the United States, of the State of Wyoming of Lincoln County, and in Mines A, B, and C, followed by a brief description of the Kemmerer coal dis-trict, its coal beds and immediate roof, thickness of cover, dip of coal beds, methods of mining timbering for roof support, roof testing, and supervision. Retreat or pillar recovery mining redistributes the overburden weight onto the adjacent coal pillars in a room-and-pillar section. The additional stress and the resultant energy stored in the remaining pillars can become so great that pillars may bump or violently fail. An investigation at the Gary No.2 Mine was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the thin pillar mining method for mitigating bump occurrences. Field observations were made and instruments were installed to monitor pillar behavior during extraction. Stress monitoring instruments and roof-to-floor convergence stations were installed in pillars and entries and crosscuts, respectively. Results indicated that high pillar stress concentrations occurred in these bump-prone geologic conditions. The thin pillar mechanism, the creation and progressive outby movement of an expanded yield zone, was also monitored through the instruments. The expanded yield zone, a result of using thin pillars in a highly stressed pillar line area, mitigates bump risk.

This investigation was undertaken to develop methods to improve the quality of titanium sponge produced by the Bureau of Mines modification of the Kroll magnesium reduction process. Research revealed that by systematic elimination of detrimental impurities introduced with the raw materials and by improved handling and processing techniques, high-quality ductile titanium with a hardness of less than 110 B.h.n. (Brinell hardness number) can be produced consistently. This improvement was accomplished by helium (or argon) stripping of residual atmospheric and other dissolved gases from the titanic chloride, preliminary dehydration of crude titanium sponge, and careful regulation of the titanium tetrachloride (TiC14) feed rate to the reactors.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identified hearing loss as the most common job-related disease in the United States in its 1996 National Occupational Research Agenda. Previous studies by NIOSH have shown that operators of surface drill rigs without cabs are commonly exposed to A-weighted sound levels exceeding 90 dB. During hammer-drilling, A-weighted sound levels exceeding 100 dB were recorded at the operator station. NIOSH collaborated with a local drilling company to design and install a partial cab between the operator and the drill steel in an effort to reduce the sound level at the operator station. Sound level measurements in the field show the partial cab reduces the A-weighted sound level by 5 to 9 dB at the operator’s left ear and 2 to 5 dB at the operator’s right ear while hammer-drilling. This paper briefly discusses the preliminary design of a cab and the testing of materials for construction of the prototype. An explanation of the ideas behind the prototype design and fabrication are covered. Finally, the field test method and results are discussed in detail.1

In underground coal mining, particularly room-and-pillar methods, the coal pillars play a significant role in roof stability. If the pillar dimensions are increased, the pillar bearing capacity also increases, but more coal remains in the pillar and therefore the recovery of mining operation decreases. Therefore, determining the optimum pillar dimension based on technical, economical and performance parameters is important. In this paper, the coal pillar is designed by using the concept of ground reaction curve (GRC). For this purpose, the GRC for coal pillars is drawn and then the elastic and plastic zone of coal pillar behavior is determined. Based on elastic and plastic zone, different equations are presented to draw a pillar reaction curve and the process of coal pillar design based on GRC is explained. As a case study, this new technique is applied to study the coal pillar state in Tabas coal mine of Iran. The results show that the presented new approach is successfully used in the design of the optimum coal pillar dimensions, and also determines the elastic and plastic behavior limit, which is important especially for the logical design of yield pillars.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. Sin embargo, la industria minera logró superarlos, mejorando la tecnología del minado, mecanización y racionalización de sus operaciones. De otro lado, el uso de métodos de minado por cuartos y pilares ha disminuído, mientras que los de corte y relleno y de subniveles se han incrementado. A esto se suma que la utilización de brocas "TC" y del "AN-FO", mejoraron la eficiencia del minado y redujeron los costos. En este sentido, el presente texto señala los últimos avances en tecnología minera a partir de los métodos de extracción, perforación, así como el empleo de relleno de tajeos con relaves de flotación, logrando un desarrollo en la seguridad y eficiencia de la minería subterránea.

The accuracy and precision of rutile analyses are discussed. Comparison is made between the wet chemical and X-ray fluorescence spectrographic methods of. estimating Ti02 in commercial rutile. Various allotropes of 'I'i02 are identified by diffractometry and a comparative analysis of the coloured varieties of rutile is given. For X-ray fiuorescence . analysis, specimen preparation is critical and sample grinding and pressures. for pellet making are discussed in detail.Cellulose bonded and backed pellets are shown to be subject to relaxation with increasing age.INTRODUCTIONTo date much of the analytical work on commercial samples has been done by wet chemical methods.This led to various discrepancies in results, which are of particular importance when certificates must be issued for overseas shipments. The present work reviews the nature of rutile and compares the results of Ti02 estimation by wet chemical methods and those obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrographic analysis.In the rutile industry the results from different analysts and even those from the same analyst are not always consistent. To the analytical chemist this should not be surprising.Fairbairn (1951) showed the results obtained from 34 different analysts on a specially prepared sample of granitic rock. It is of some interest to note that the Ti02 content as determined by the 34 analysts using unspecified methods ranged from 0-17 per cent to 0·30 per cent. Fairbairn (1953) found that1. replicate analyses from the same analyst give a high order of precision,2. analyses by different analysts using the same procedures give reasonable precision, and...

Methods that involve the use of signature blast holes in order to identify the particular frequency characteristics of a geographical area are widely available. Information acquired can be used to determine optimum blast hole timings to produce the desired constructive and destructive inference. However, these types of analyses can be both complicated and expensive. This study will investigate the use and practicality of signature hole and/or shift and sum analysis software and their application to small diameter construction utility blasting operations in Pennsylvania and faster moving projects in general. A determination will then be made as to whether this technology can be utilized by today’s blaster, from both a functional and a cost effective basis. Single hole blasts will be detonated on various smaller construction projects and will be monitored with an array of seismographs. The collected data will be analyzed in order to determine the optimum timing between holes to produce the preferred frequency content while keeping in mind the explosives user’s current inventory of blasting supplies.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A.
