IF you have ever travelled in the valley lying between the Selkirks and the Rockies in the East Koorenay district, you will have noted that the former mountains are rounded and massive, while the serrated peaks of the latter, fingering into the sky, bring an entirely different. picture. These two mountain ranges, with the comparatively level valley between, serve splendidly to introduce the subject for discussion. It is rather strange that, despite the fact that wear is undoubredly the greatest force with which human ingenuity bas to contend, it has come in for very little study from the stand point of pure science. Empiricism has been the sole ally in the fight for improvement! That we may have a clear understanding as to what we mean by wear, I would include in the term the breaking dawn of ail solid matter, from the natural wearing dawn of the mountains previously mentioned, to the hale in the mill pipe-line, which forces one to shut-down-usually at some un-earthly hour-to carry out a repair. It seems a far cry from mountains to mill launders or pipe-lines, but, magnified sufficiently, most of the materials with which we have to deal would show surfaces not unlike those we see around us. The progressive steps of wear, or ?erosion' as our geological friends would prefer to term it, are exemplified in the two ranges of mountains and the valley between. True, the wearing dawn by natural forces is a slow process. The aeons which have passed since first these mountains were formed seem endless. The natural forces pitted against them seem puny in the light of the interminable rime that has been needed to effect the changes. But here, as in the case of the materials with which we are dealing day by day, the combination of many forces ultimately brings about that condition which we describe as 'worn out'. In the case of the mountains, it is when they are finally levelled into plains, and in the case of equipment which we use, it is when that equipment will no longer serve its purpose.

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

Einführung in die Problematik 1.1 Die Bedeutung des Schildausbaus Seit fast 30 Jahren ist die Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Primärenergiemarkt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland durch einen von Erdöl and Erdgas geführten and insbesondere gegen die Steinkohle gerichteten Verdrängungswettbewerb gekennzeichnet, der den Steinkohlenbergbau zu tiefgreifenden RationalisierungsmaBnahmen zwang. In diesem Zusammenhang kam es Anfang der 70er Jahre zur Einrührung des Schildausbaus, der eine erhebliche Produktivitätssteigerung in den Strebbetrieben zur Folge hatte and damit die Uberlebenschance des Steinkohlenbergbaus in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland enorm verbesserte. Der Grund hierfdr lag darin, daB der Schildausbau im Vergleich zu dem vor ihm eingesetzten Rahmen- and Einzelstempelausbau eine wesentlich hdöhere Ausbauleistung erbrachte, weil er sich weit weniger empfindlich gegen Hangendausbruche and aus dem Alten Mann hereinbdschende Bruchberge erwies. So erklärt sich auch die stürmische Entwicklung and die schnelle Verbreitung des Schildausbaus. Bereits 1975 stammte rd. 50 % der Fdrderung aus Schildstreben, 1990 waren es fiber 75 % and heute sind es fiber 90 %. 1.2 Die Staubentstehung beim Schildausbau Die Erfolge des Schildausbaus sind unbestritten. Jedoch nahmen :nit seiner Einführung die Probleme der Staubentstehung and Staubbekämpfung im Vergleich zum Ein zelstempel- and Rahmenausbau erheblich zu. MaBgebend dafür sind hauptsächlich folgende Gründe: - Abbau von dozen nit gebrächen, weichen Hangendschichten, die erst durch Schildausbau abbaubar wurden, - Zerkleinerung des auf den breiten Kappen aufliegenden Bergematerials infolge der höheren Ausbaustiltzkrafte des Schildausbaus, Zermahlen der sick in die Spaltabdichtungen hineinarbeitenden Bergestückchen, - Erhöhung der Wettergeschwindigkeit infolge der durch die Baufarm des Schildausbaus bedingter. Verkleinerung des Strebquerschnitts verbunden mit der Aufwirbelung and Aussichtung von Staub, - Aufwirbelung von bereits abgelagertem Staub im Bruchraum beim Hereinbrechen der Dachschichten. Die genannten Gründe treten zumeist nicht in jedem Abbaubetrieb gleichzeitig auf. Sie rind vielmehr u.a. abhängig vom Ausbautyp, von den Gebirgsverhältnissen and von der Abbaugeschwindigkeit. Trotzdem ergeben sich beim Vorrücken des Ausbaus in der Regel hohe Staubkonzentrationen, die deswegen besonders kritisch sind, weil es sich um quarzhaltigen Feinstaub handelt, der besonders gesundheitsschädlich ist. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes methods to enhance the capacity, stiffness, and timber utilization of wood crib supports. Since stiffer supports minimize strata deflections that contribute to roof instability, efforts to maximize crib stiffness while maintaining stability through a wide displacement range should be a design priority. The stiffness and capacity of conventional crib designs, employing alternating layers of wood timbers that are loaded perpendicular to the grain, can be increased by increasing the interlayer contact area or by using higher strength wood. Contact area can be increased by using wider timbers or employing more timbers per layer. Concepts that provide parallel-to-the-grain timber loading will provide substantial increases in crib stiffness and capacity. Two concepts that utilize this principle are examined: (1) an original South African design that constructs wood cribs from preformed layers (mats) of timber where short blocks are oriented vertically between horizontal slabs; and (2) a design that employs full lengths of timber placed vertically in the interior of a conventional crib structure. These designs also provide more efficient timber utilization by providing greater support capacity per volume of wood used in the crib construction.

A heavy-mineral deposit about 1.6 kilometers (I mile) in length and averaging about three meters (10 feet) in thickness is exposed approximately130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert County, Colorado near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium Ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet, and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan, and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. Thus, Titanium Ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late Cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

"The impact of high-grade data on resource estimation has been a longstanding topic of interest in the mining industry. Concerns related to possible over-estimation of resources in such cases have led many investigators to develop possible solutions to limit the influence of highgrade data. It is interesting to note that the risk associated with including high-grade data in estimation appears to be one of the most broadly appreciated concepts understood by the general public, and not only professionals in the resource modelling sector. Many consider grade capping or cutting as the primary approach to dealing with high-grade data; however, other methods and potentially better solutions have been proposed for different stages throughout the resource modelling workflow.This paper reviews the various methods that geomodellers have used to mitigate the impact of high-grade data on resource estimation. In particular, the methods are organized into three categories depending on the stage of the estimation workflow when they may be invoked: (1) domain determination; (2) grade capping; and (3) estimation methods and implementation. It will be emphasized in this paper that any treatment of high-grade data should not lead to undue lowering of the estimated grades, and that limiting the influence of high grades by grade capping should be considered as a last resort. A much better approach is related to domain design or invoking a proper estimation methodology. An example data-set from a gold deposit in Ontario, Canada is used to illustrate the impact of controlling high-grade data in each phase of a study. We note that the case study is by no means comprehensive; it is used to illustrate the place of each method and the manner in which it is possible to mitigate the impact of high-grade data at various stages in resource estimation."

Introduction The International Nickel Company have been pioneers in mine rescue work in Ontario. Following the fire in the Hollinger mine in the spring of 1928, the Company purchased ten self-contained oxygen breathing outfits, ten all-service gas masks, an oxygen high-pressure pump, life line, inhalator, ten cap-lamps with batteries, and a complete stock of spare and accessory parts. An instructor from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, came to the Creighton mine for one week and trained twenty men in the use and limitations of all equipment. Monthly training courses were commenced in the fall, and have continued to the present time. Of the original twenty men trained, ten are still on the Creighton mine rescue teams. In the meantime, and as an aftermath of the Hollinger fire, the Work-men's Compensation Board of Ontario and the Ontario Department of Mines established a central mine rescue station at Timmins. This was completed in the spring of 1930. It was then decided, in view of the great expansion in mine development in the Sudbury district, to build and equip a similar station to serve all the mines there, namely, Creighton, Frood, Garson, Falconbridge, Sudbury Basin, and Errington. An extensive survey was made and a central location selected opposite the Frood mine. The International Nickel Company donated a site, and the station was completed in the fall of 1930. The station is a two-storey brick building, 27 ft. by 47 ft., with a large garage adjoining it. The ground floor is used for equipment and for training the crews. On the second floor are living quarters for the superintendent and his family. The garage houses a closed truck, in which all necessary equipment can be taken to any desired point for training purposes or for actual mine rescue work, if and when necessary. The garage is also used as a gas room, where the men are trained in an irrespirable atmosphere. A gas-tight observation window between it and the training room enables the superintendent to see and direct the men undergoing training, weight exercisers and other devices being used.

Improving the accuracy of the performance prediction models for hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is important in estimation of the schedule and cost of tunnelling in related projects. The effects of rock mass on performance of TBMs has been studied extensively, yet due to the complex nature of the process, impact of many parameters influencing machine advance rate are not very clear and there is still room for improvements. More accurate estimates can be obtained by better understanding of operating parameters in various geological conditions and can lead to matching machine specifications with job conditions, optimizing machine performance, and avoiding long delays and downtime for increased productivity. This paper will offer review of two case histories including Queens Water tunnel in New York and KCRC project in Hong Kong. The analysis of the available field data, including the geological back mapping and results of laboratory testing of rock mechanical properties, machine operational parameters and achieved rate of penetration will be presented. This includes statistical analysis of available field data to provide a better understanding of the influence of rock mass properties on performance of hard rock TBMs as well as related formulas to improve performance estimates.

Neste trabalho a estrutura cristalina do carbeto de tântalo (TaC), que é um material extremamente duro, com elevado ponto de fusão e elevada estabilidade química, foi analisada por difração de raios- X e pelo método Rietiveld.Para isto, o carbeto de tântalo foi obtido a partir do precursor tris(oxalato)oxitantalato de amônio hidratado, através de reação gás-sólido e sólido-sólido a baixa temperatura (1000°C) e curto tempo de reação, e foi caracterizado através de Difração de Raios-X (DRX), Refinamento Rietveld e Micróscopia Eletronica de Varredura (MEV). Através das analises de DRX e do refinamento Reitiveld para o TaC com S= 1,1584, observou-se a formação do carbeto de tântalo puro com estrutura cúbica e tamanho médio de cristalitos na ordem de 12,9 nanômetros.

The responsibilities for the work are shared between the owner and the contractor. ? Open Specifications: These leave the scope and design of the installation up to the micropile contractor. This method is the most common for securing bids on temporary micropile work. The responsibility for design and performance is clearly placed on the contractor. Open specifications are not recommended for permanent applications. This method allows the contractor to select the most economical micropile system. ? Prescriptive Specification: The Owner describes specific procedures that must be followed, but which may not necessarily describe the objective of the work. When prescriptive specifications are used, the owner is responsible for the proper performance of the system. The contractor is responsible for satisfying the details of the specifications. O processo termomecânico de laminação controlada seguido de resfriamento acelerado permite obter aços de elevada resistência mecânica e tenacidade e excelente soldabilidade, com o emprego de menores adições de elementos de liga, além da exclusão de tratamentos térmicos posteriores. Com a aquisição do sistema de resfriamento acelerado pela Usiminas, CLC, diversos aços vêm sendo desenvolvidos. Este trabalho apresenta a caracterização microestrutural e mecânica relativa à fabricação do aço API 5L X80, utilizando resfriamento acelerado. Foram avaliados os resultados de dois projetos de liga, Nb-Cr-Mo-Ti e Nb-V-Ti, com a laminação terminando no campo intercrítico. O aço Nb-V-Ti foi processado, também, com a laminação concluída no campo austenítico. Em todos, os testes a resistência mecânica e a tenacidade atenderam aos requisitos especificados pela API 5L. Embora a microestrutura dos aços tenha sido distinta em função das suas condições de processamento, a laminação do aço Nb-V-Ti no campo austenítico foi mais vantajosa em consequência de ganhos em produtividade e estabilidade operacional.

In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31° to 37° and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Combined with the results of granulation and packing experiments, the influence of the adhering fines layer deformation on the degree of voidage loss is specifically discussed.CITATION:Zhou, M, Zhou, H and Honeyands, T, 2017. It is shown that factors associated with conditions whIch are thermodynamically favourable for the formation of CuS04 in roasting lead to high copper recoveries on leaching. One of these factors is the ratio of the air to solids used for roasting. This can be varied widely without loss of temperature control in the sulphating roasting of many Australian copper concentrates.Thus, the prediction of the air to solids ratio corresponding to a maximum p(SO3) value, for a given concentrate and temperature, is of importance in fluidized bed roasting, since this could be associated with the formation of a maximum quantity of CuS04. Calculations are presented which predict this air to solids ratio, not only for a given concentrate composition, temperature, and pressure, but also for air which is enriched with sulphur dioxide or oxygen.

Downhole Seismic Testing (DST) is a very popular applied seismology site characterizing tool within geotechnical engineering. A challenging aspect of DST is to characterize the acquired seismic data sets to determine the analysis method that will result in the most accurate interval velocity values. BCE has invested considerable resources into developing Seismic Trace Characterization (STC), which uses various independent parameters of the acquired data at a particular depth. Initial work in this area resulted in the selection of the linearity estimate from the polarization analysis, the cross correlation coefficient of the full waveforms at the particular depth and the preceding depth and a uniquely developed parameter referred to as the signal shape parameter for this characterization. Subsequent analysis in STC identified two other parameters: the Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) and the Peak Symmetry Differential (PSD). The paper briefly describes these parameters and then outlines how they can guide the data analysis to derive more accurate results, especially near surface, which is especially important to assess the liquefaction potential in areas prone to earthquakes, such as California. The process will be illustrated with actual data from another area prone to earthquakes, namely New Zealand. 1. INTRODUCTION The near surface characterization of low strain in-situ shear wave velocities (VS) has proven critical for liquefaction assessment. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which dynamic loading of saturated soil results in the material properties to change suddenly from a solid state to a liquefied state. VS is an important parameter for evaluating liquefaction potential due to fact that it is influenced by many of the variables that influence liquefaction (e.g., void ratio, soil density, confining stress, stress history, and geologic age (Andrus et al., 1997)). Aki and Richards (2002) also outline that the amplitude of ground motion should depend on the density and shear wave velocity of near surface soils and rocks according to the theory of wave propagation. Since the change in density with the increase in depth is relative minor compared to that of the shear wave velocity, the latter is a very useful parameter to represent site conditions (Stewart et al., 1997). Bray (2014) and his colleagues carried out an extensive geotechnical analysis of the catastrophic liquefaction that occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2010 and 2011 and found that near surface rather than deep liquefaction resulted in extensive foundation damage.

Le concept du forage horizontal a été développé voilà de nombreuses années. Différents types de plate-formes permettant le forage horizontal depuis une cheminée ont été conçus par divers manufacturiers ou opérateurs miniers. Entre autres, on connaît bien la griffe de montage Alimak à laquelle peut être fixée une plat-forme sur laquelle est montée une foreuse. En 1992, Ross-Finlay a développé sa propre plate-forme de forage qui à notre opinion améliore la flexibilité du concept du forage horizontal, en augmente la productivité et en diminue le coût d?ensemble tout en assurant une sécurité accrue des travailleurs. Tel que montré à la figure 1, la plate-forme employée à la Mine Kiena est composée d?un toit de protection contre les chutes d?objets et de deux passerelles de forage de forme carrée. Le toit et les passerelles sont fixées à une structure de 6.5 m de longueur équipée de deux assemblages de rouleaux (non montrés à la figure) permettant de faire glisser l?ensemble sur des rails Alimak. L?angle du toit et des passerelles peut être ajusté pour des cheminées dont le pendage varie de 65 degrés à 85 degrés.

The Northparkes E26 Mine is AustraliaÆs first block cave mine. This paper presents an outline of the design and construction philosophies that drove the project development and details the excavation, ground support and construction methods used. Features of the block caving method at Northparkes include:high production rates from multiple drawpoints;hard blocky ore fractured along gypsum veins; andloading/unloading of openings due to mining induced stresses.The drawpoints are subjected to high abrasion from the flow of ore, as well as impact from both secondary blasting and from the production LHDs. In order to withstand these harsh conditions and to ensure a low maintenance environment, a conservative approach to ground support was taken. The experiences gained during construction are discussed and whether the design expectations have been achieved. By installing a high level of ground support during excavation of the openings subject to mining stresses, a low maintenance environment has been constructed. Operating costs are therefore minimised and Northparkes E26 Mine continues to produce at the lowest cost per tonne of all Australian underground mines.
