In order to find the behavior of dewatered unconsolidated strata during the process of injecting water through a borehole, a new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for the real-time strain monitoring of unconsolidated strata during a water injection process for a dewatered unconsolidated strata of a coal mine. The unconsolidated strata water injection test was implemented through a borehole at a depth of +115.83 to +135.15m. The employed FBG strain monitoring system and ground water level observation system were installed at the depth in the unconsolidated strata where the water injection was conducted through two different boreholes. The water injection pressures in the test were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3MPa respectively, and the total water injection volume was 4226.84m3. The relationships between the water injection pressures, water injection volume and the strain change of the unconsolidated strata, the stress and strain conditions of the unconsolidated strata before and after water injection, were analyzed. This paper presents the results of these tests, and shows that the dewatering compression of the unconsolidated strata is reduced with increasing water injection pressures and water injection volumes. Comparing the stress-strain conditions before and after water injection, it is found that the stress of the water injection strata is in tension, which confirms the theory that the settlement of the thick unconsolidated strata is directly caused by the reduction of ground water levels. The high sensitivity and stability of the FBG monitoring system used was able to realize the real-time strain monitoring of the water injection process within a deep unconsolidated strata. This FBG monitoring system and the test results presented are very important for understanding further treatment of settlement in unconsolidated strata.

Em sistemas cerâmicos policristalinos as homojunções e heterojunções podem apresentar comportamento elétrico desde completamente ôhmico até com elevada característica retificadora, que no limite é a base do comportamento varistor, o qual é o dispositivo de proteção de sistemas e equipamentos eletro-eletrônicos contra sobretensões mais utilizado. Os óxidos de zinco (ZnO) e de estanho (SnO2) são, individualmente, base dos varistores com melhores comportamentos elétricos. Este trabalho, com base nas caracterizações estruturais por técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura e análises termodilatométricas, e na caracterização elétrica e dielétrica, avalia as propriedades varistoras de cerâmicas à base do sistema misto ZnO-SnO2. Verifica-se a formação de um sistema polifásico apresentando homojunções e heterojunções com diferentes características morfológicas e graus de densificação, exibindo ainda comportamento eletrotérmico com predomínio de características varistoras em função da dopagem da matriz mista ZnO-SnO2. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam a tendência da formação de espinélio (Zn2SnO4) em presença de grãos de SnO2 e do estabelecimento de comportamento varistor (coeficiente de não-linearidade > 10), que pode ser aperfeiçoado por dopagem adicional e por tratamentos térmicos, principalmente quanto à redução da corrente de fuga e da ampliação e estabilização da região não-linear da curva tensão x corrente elétrica.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar as diferentes microestruturas do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 obtidas pelo processo de soldagem Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). As regiões do metal base, zona fundida e zona afetada pelo calor foram investigadas nos corpos de prova com diferentes aportes térmicos. As microestruturas obtidas foram caracterizadas utilizando-se a microscopia óptica (MO). As imagens de Mo obtidas na zona afetada pelo calor mostram que a fração de austenita aumentou com o aumento do aporte térmico. Este aumento está relacionado ao alto teor de cromo e molibdênio presentes no metal de adição utilizado na soldagem. Na zona fundida, a fração de austenita de widmansttaten foi observada com maior frequência na microestrutura do corpo de prova soldado com o aporte térmico de 1,87KJ/mm. Essa maior fração de austenita de widmansttaten observada para o aporte térmico de 1,87KJ/mm está relacionada com o maior tempo de permanência em altas temperaturas deste corpo de prova em relação aos outros corpos de prova investigados. Vale ressaltar que a adição de nitrogênio também promove a formação desta fase. De modo geral, os resultados da metalografia quantitativa mostram que a porcentagem de ferrita foi superior a 65% nas zonas termicamente afetadas e fundidas.

A Mina de Morro Agudo da Votorantim Metais está localizada na cidade de Paracatu (MG). A mina compreende um depósito de zinco e chumbo e atualmente o método de lavra empregado é o de Câmara e Pilares. O estudo geometalúrgico empregado na unidade tem por objetivo avaliar a performance das câmaras de lavra submetidas a testes de bancada correlacionando características mineralógicas com as etapas de beneficiamento. O minério é constituído predominantemente pelos minerais minério esfalerita (ZnS) e galena (PbS). O trabalho vem sendo desenvolvido com amostras de testemunhos de sondagem e representam as câmaras de lavra dos diversos níveis e regiões da Mina. Além dos testes de bancada que compreendem etapas de moagem, granuloquímica e flotação, as amostras são submetidas às análises químicas e mineralógicas. Foram determinados estatisticamente as classes de teores de alimentação dos testes, com o objetivo de realizar comparações de indivíduos que pertencem à mesma população. As câmaras de lavra são classificadas pelo rendimento geometalúrgico de acordo com a performance da variável recuperação metálica. De acordo com os resultados dos testes em bancada e sua respectiva classificação geometalúrgica, é possível traçar estratégias para que o planejamento de lavras e a usina de beneficiamento possam trabalhar em sinergia, de forma a maximizar o valor econômico de determinada frente de lavra.

This report describes work which was done to apply an existing finite element computer program UNSAT2 to the unsteady, unsaturated flow of water through waste shale piles. The work was done in three phases: 1. Verification of program through comparison with existing data. 2. Verification of program through simulation of flow from field seepage ponds at Rifle, Colorado. Considerable laboratory work was done in this phase to obtain capillary pressure-saturation-relative permeability data and hydraulic conductivity values for retorted shale. 3. Application of program to flow due to natural rainfall in a section through the Piceance Basin in Colorado, and a typical waste shale pile.

Ilmenite concentrates prepared from beach and dune sands of Florida, India, Australia, and other localities deviate to varying degrees from the theoretical composition of pure ilmenite, and generally contain more TiO2 than the formula FeTi03 would indicate, and some Fe2O3. This variation in composition is due to different amounts of altered ilmenite in the concentrates. (') The alteration has been shown to take place by oxidation and leaching of the iron in ilmenite, to yield residual products consisting of amaphous or very finely crystalline titanium dioxide and ferric oxide. Other studies(2) have stressed that ilmenite may alter first to an amorphous titanium-iron oxide, or to an amorphous mixture of titanium and iron oxides, with later alteration to crystalline titanium dioxide. There has been some speculation as to whether alteration of ilmenite is usually caused by weathering or by hydrothermal pr0cesses.(3,4,5 Three main methods of approach were used to study the mechanism and rate of ilmenite weathering. (1) Etch tests were used to learn the relationship between crystallographic orientation and the rate of chemical attack on ilmenite. (2) Altered ilmenites in New Jersey sands were compared with ilmenite in rocks of the area from which the sands were probably derived. (3) Experiments were carried out to determine at what rate, and by what agents, originally fresh ilmenite could be altered in the laboratory under simulated weathering conditions. ETCH FIGURES ON ILMENITE CRYSTAL PLANES A rather large ilmenite crystal from Sannidal, Norway, about 11/2 x 11/2 x 2 inches, bearing a few natural faces with imperfect surfaces, was prepared for etching by grinding and polishing crystal planes whose Bravais-Miller indices (referred to hexagonal axes) had been determined by X-ray methods to be 00.1, 10.0, and 10.2. Metallographic examination showed that the crystal was homogeneous, and uniform in orientation, except for the presence of twin lamellae which were oriented with their broadest surfaces parallel to the 00.1 planes of the large crystal. Since ilmenite is rather inert to standard etch reagents, strong solutions of hot sulfuric acid and cold hydrofluoric acid were used. Preliminary tests established that better etch figures were obtained using HF than with H2So4 solutions. The etch figures produced on 00.1 and 01.0 planes of ilmenite by etching 3 to 5 minutes in cold concentrated HF solution are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. "AbstractThe PRESS-IN METHOD is widely recognised as “an environmentally friendly piling method”. However, this characteristic is only one of the fundamental advantages of the method and this paper presents the most up-to-date capabilities of the method. Due to the evolution in recent years, the Press-in Method is now applicable to 2.5m thick retaining walls, over 50m deep foundations, overcoming rock conditions and confined construction conditions.The Press-in PrinciplesThe basis of the Press-in Method is simple. The Silent Piler presses a pre-formed displacement pile into the ground by static jacking force. The reaction for the Press-in Force is generated by gripping previously installed piles. As a pile is pressed into the ground, “A Pressure Bulb” is formed around the pile toe. Accordingly, higher bearing capacity can be generated compared to driven piles without disturbing the ground and producing any vibration. Heat stress is a major concern for the health, safety and productivity of miners working in hot and humid underground mines. At greater depth, heat inside underground mines increases due to geothermal gradient, heat released from high-capacity machinery, exposed rock surface, auto-compression of air, human metabolism, etc. Prolonged physical work in thermal environments severely affects the health, safety and efficiency of miners. In order to address this important issue, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been conducted. This SLR aimed to identify the research gap in the area of heat stress effect on underground miners and its control. An extensive literature search was carried out on numerous digital databases, grey literature and conference proceedings to identify relevant research work for this review. Moreover, the impactful studies, methodologies and preventive measures undertaken during the past five decades on the effect of heat stress on underground miners were retrospectively analysed, with a broader aim to explore the need for further research on this pertinent topic. Overall, 571 references were identified from the literature review, out of which 51 research articles addressing the sources of heat, heat stress effects on miners, heat stress indices and control measures for heat stress in underground mines were selected as primary papers for detailed review. Pre-developed fatigue is one of the prime causes of health hazard, safety and productivity loss of miners working in underground high heat stress zones. Hence, development of a better heat stress index integrating personal, environmental parameters and pre-developed fatigue (PDF) of miners is essential.

"Dump design is critical to effective mine planning in large scale open pit mines. Capital and haulage costs are considerable from early stages and through the life-of-mine as these dumps gradually become immense structures. Delivered mining rates, as well as certain spatial and physical constraints, provide a set of parameters of mathematical and economic relationship that creates opportunities for modeling and thus facilitates the measuring and optimization of ultimate dump design by using programming and empirical techniques while achieving economic objectives. This paper presents a methodology to optimize the ultimate dump design by minimizing its total dumping costs. The methodology consists of the formulation of a generalized model based on the relationship of the main dump parameters, followed by the use of linear programming to find the solution that minimizes the haulage total cost, and finally through a series of iterations, modifies the preliminary solution by projecting it to the topography and creating the ultimate dump design. A case study applied to a waste dump exemplifies this methodology. INTRODUCTION Open pit mine operations move large amounts of material on a daily basis from the shovel faces to the appropriate destination points. Hustrulid et al. identified three major destination places where the material receives downstream treatment after its delivery: mill processing, leaching dumps, and waste rock dumps [1]. The corresponding destination is given by a cut-off grade criteria, ore type, and the possibility of obtaining the maximum metal recovery. Dump leaching technologies have developed substantially since 1975 [2], and have enabled mining facilities to beneficiate low grade sulfide and oxide ores. As a consequence, the number of active dumps have increased since then and the entire mine configuration, which is limited in itself, has changed. The proper location, design, and construction of a mine dump must serve the safety, environmental and economic goals of the long-range mine plans. Therefore, an optimized use of the available surface area in the mine is highly desired."

A limpidez de aços e a diminuição de problemas de lingotabilidade em aciarias tem sido alvo constante de esforços de engenheiros na siderúrgica. O bom entendimento dos efeitos do processo e as suas respectivas particularidades garantem a redução de ocorrências de inclusões e má lingotabilidade. Dentre os principais aços de construção mecânica com maior ocorrência de problemas de inclusões e lingotabildade estão os aços “Baixo Si” e aços com faixa de S e acalmados ao Al e Si/Mn. Entre os parâmetros de análise, a ordem de adição de ligas, definição de temperatura de lingotamento e a estabilidade térmica e química, são os de maior influência na quantidade de inclusões e problemas de lingotabilidade. Para aços baixo Si, a pré-desoxidação com Al, auxiliada por maiores temperaturas de lingotamento, confere inclusões líquidas no inicio do processo promovendo a maior remoção destas. Da mesma forma, aços com S e Al são beneficiados pelo aumento da temperatura de lingotamento, mas fortemente afetados pela estratificação térmica do aço na panela, quando é elevado o teor de S e Al nestes. Sendo assim, o tempo de espera e o estado térmico da panela e distribuidor passam a ser um fator importante para redução da estratificação térmica bem como a redução de problemas com macroinclusão e má lingotabilidade.

DIE castings may be defined as metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into a metallic mold or die. It is necessary to keep this definition in mind to avoid confusing this process with other permanent-mold casting processes. The fundamental principles of the process have been known and practised many years. The simplest application is embodied in the modern linotype machine in which molten metal (usually tin-lead alloy) is forced under pressure into a metallic mold. The pressure is derived from a piston and cylinder immersed in the molten metal. Progress in the art of die casting may conveniently be divided into threee groups: Machine for imparting pressure to the metal, material for the die or mold, casting alloys. CASTING MACHINES The problem of delivering molten metal under pressure into a die is comparatively simple, when dealing with low-fusing-point alloys, as the alloys of lead and tin, but it is much more complicated when dealing with metals of higher fusing points, such as the alloys of zinc, aluminum, and copper. Although the art of die casting is comparatively new and, to a large extent, unknown, the records of the patent office are replete with patents on the subject. Fig. 1 shows the Underwood machine patented in 1902; this is probably one of the first machines designed for the production of commercial die castings. The relation of this machine to the linotype casting machine is clearly. apparent. A cylinder and piston are immersed in the molten metal, the application of power to this piston forcing the molten metal, under pressure, into the mold or die. The Doehler machine, Fig. 2, patented in 1907, is based on the same general principles. This machine is used to a large extent at the present time, throughout the United States, for the production of zinc, tin, and lead alloy die castings.

The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have 'been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain's Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain's Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot's Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating's Section to the south. The Keating's Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as' to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the 'east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson, Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001,000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,411,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

Ground freezing was utilized to provide complete stability of the excavation face and complete groundwater cut-off for the jacking of the three tunnel boxes for the Interstate 90 / Interstate 93 approach to the Fort Point Channel crossing. Through a wide range of geological conditions and large buried obstructions, the freezing provided complete stability of the face so that a 11.5 m (38 ft) high free standing vertical face could be mined without the need for any additional face support. Obstructions were incorporated into the massive frozen ground matrix, and held in place so that they could be excavated with a minimum of disturbance. The freezing provided an absolute groundwater cut-off, and permitted the work to be done without disturbance to the active rail system immediately above. With the use of instrumentation such as borehole thermocouples, the effectiveness of the freezing was guaranteed and the jacking proceeded with complete confidence and assurance of the ground conditions ahead.

Ductile hafnium was not obtained consistently by the conventional Kroll process. The bimetal reduction modification produced a more ductile hafnium by lowering the impurities, especially oxygen, in the sponge metal. Hafnium oxide was chlorinated in the presence of carbon to form anhydrous hafnium tetrachloride, which was reduced by sodium and magnesium in an inert atmosphere to produce sponge hafnium metal. After vacuum distillation to remove the byproducts, the sponge was arc-melted into ingot and rolled into strip. Metallic impurities were decreased by evaporating the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused salt. An excessive amount (over 1,200 parts per million (p.p.m.)) of aluminum was contained in some of the hafnium oxide, much of which remained as aluminum chloride in the hafnium tetrachloride during chlorination. Evaporation of the hafnium tetrachloride from a fused NaCI-KCI mixture during the Mg-Na reduction greatly lowered its aluminum content, as most of the aluminum and some of the other metallic impurities were retained by the fused salt.

THE PURPOSE of this paper is to indicate the working capacity of different types of ropes for various engineering and mining duties. ROPE CONSTRUCTIONS There are approximately one hundred different designs of ropes in use today but, normally, only about ten are necessary for mining and engineering duties. The rest are designed for unusual equipments, or are different ways of combining wires of special shapes. Basically, the various designs of mining ropes consist of round, triangular, and oval strands, constructed with one or several layers of wire over a single wire, or a compound construction of sever.al wires. To suit different installations ropes are made with 3, 4, 5, or more of these types of strands over a central core, the ?co re itself being manufactured from either a fibrous material or a combination of steel wires. Nevertheless, in mining, the demand for 'locked coil rope', wl1ich may be considered as a single strand, is steadily increasing, especially for use on vertical shaft winding engines. So far as the locked coil rope is concerned, many constructions have been developed to suit different requirements, such as - in addition to winding ropes - aerial carrying Topes, shaft guide ropes and haulage ropes.

Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

O fósforo é um elemento crítico para a qualidade dos aços, tornando a redução dos teores desse elemento uma exigência para a indústria siderúrgica. Uma forma de se medir a eficiência da desfosforação é através do coeficiente de partição do fósforo (Lp=%P(escória)/%P(aço)). O objetivo principal deste trabalho é avaliar escórias de um forno elétrico a arco através da comparação entre o Lp real com o Lp calculado por simulação termodinâmica, avaliando, também, o comportamento da partição de fósforo com relação à composição química. A partir de dados de composição química de amostras de escória e aço de uma usina siderúrgica, foram feitas simulações termodinâmicas utilizando o software FactSage. Com base nesses resultados, concluiu-se que o cálculo computacional através do software descreve bem o comportamento termodinâmico, mas tende a superestimar o Lp, provavelmente por questões cinéticas e/ou de transferência de massa e calor.

In this paper we consider the elements of a distributed information geomechanic monitoring system which is used in computerized mine planning and mining operations control. The automated system is a technical means of geomechanic monitoring, as a complex system of regulated observations, estimation and prediction of geomechanic state of rock mass and workings during underground mining of coal deposits. Geomechanic monitoring at coal mines and the automated system execute data collection, analysis and calculations of geomechanic situation in the panel during planning, development and carrying-out of mining operations for ensuring geotechnical stability of underground mining.
