THE Canadian Malartic mine is in Western Quebec, about fifty miles east of Noranda and forty miles south of Amos on the Canadian National railway. The recently constructed branch of the railway from Rouyn to Senneterre passes half a mile north of the mine. HISTORY he property was discovered in 1923 'by St. Barbe Sladen, H. S. Kennedy, and J. C. Carroll, who were prospecting for an Ottawa syndicate and found gold in a small quartz vein near the present workings. Five claims were staked and were optioned to an exploration company, who allowed the option to lapse after surface sampling and diamond drilling eighteen holes. Some months later, the property was sold to Malartic Gold Mines, Limited, who carried on development until 1929. A vertical shaft was sunk and exploration work done on three levels, supplemented by diamond drilling 16 surface holes and 62 underground holes. The work indicated that the important ore occurred in two silicified.zones in schisted greywacke which intersected west of the shaft and were believed to be controlled by a drag-fold. The ore grade was not considered sufficiently favourable to war-rant an operation, and work was terminated. With the advance in the price of gold to $35 per ounce, interest was revived and a new Company, Canadian Malartic Gold Mines, Limited, was incorporated for further development. The shareholders of the old Company accepted a new position under which their interests were protected, and sufficient treasury shares were optioned to Ventures, Limited, and Sudbury Basin Mines, Limited, to provide funds for further exploration of the prop-erty to determine whether, under the new economic conditions, profitable operation would be possible, and, if advisable, to provide the equipment for production. Additional claims were acquired, bringing the total area up to 1,029 acres.

When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

"The Abitibi volcano-plutonic belt forms the major portion of the Abitibi lithotectonic subprovince in the Superior Province. The Abitibi belt is composed essentially of"" (1) approximately 2.7 Ga old volcanic and sedimentary rocks; and (2) gabbro, tonalite, granodiorite and syenite intrusions occurring in well-defined prekinematic ( synvolcanic ), synkinematic and post-kinematic plutonic suites. Most of these rocks are metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Regional multi-phase deformation affects the volcano-sedimentary rocks. Deformation was initiated as these rocks were formed, and peaked at the end of the Keno ran orogeny with the emplacement of granitic batholiths.There are 145 former and current mines in the Quebec segment of the belt. To date, more than 420 Mt of ore have been extracted yielding 1,600 tonnesof Au, more than4,000 tonnesof Ag,4,400,000 tonnes of Cu and 5,300,000 tonnes of Zn. Mineral production is concentrated in geologic domains that approximately coincide with the boundaries of lithotectonic domains. We have compared the geology and mineral deposits of different domains to illustrate their distinct metallogenic signature. Certain domains are dominantly gold-producing (Cadillac-Malartic, Val-d'Or, Caopatina), others are base-metal producers (Matagami and Normetal), while others produce both gold and base metals ( Rouyn-Noranda, Chibougamau, Casa-Berardi-Joutel).Gold is extracted from quartz-rich vein deposits (for example, Val-d' Or), sulfide-rich veindeposits(Cadillac or Chibougamau) and from volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits ( Rouyn-Noranda). Base metals are generally mined from volcanogenic massive sulfide( RouynNoranda, Matagami, Normetal), although certain vein deposits yield base metals (Chibougamau) . Certain sectors are dominantly zincrich (Matagami, Normetal)."

The procedures and equipment used for sampling iron ore process streams have generally improved in recent years. However, there are a number of areas where significant issues still commonly occur, including sampling high capacity streams, sample cutter design and operation, division of primary increments at the secondary sampling stage, the performance of crushers installed to reduce the particle size prior to sample division, and the sample mass that is retained at each sampling stage. These issues of non-conformance with correct sampling principles are caused by factors such as increasing the speed and loading of conveyor belts to increase throughput, which changes the trajectory of the ore stream and may result in an inability of the sample cutter to handle the increased flow rate without sample loss. Failure to sample the entire primary increment stream at the secondary sampling stage is also a common issue as well as failure of crushers to provide crushed products of the required particle size due to ongoing maintenance and/or adjustment issues. This paper presents the analysis, design, and construction of soil improvement for storage tanks foundation support at a site in Tabasco, Mexico. A total of 980 Rammed Aggregate Piers of 12.5 m in length and 0.5 m in diameter were designed and constructed to support four storage tanks. The soil conditions at the site generally consist of loose to medium dense silty/clayey sand to about 8m depth, underlain by very loose to medium dense silty/clayey sand with seams of very soft clay. The use of Rammed Aggregate Piers induced densification of the soil to increase its stiffness and reduce the liquefaction potential to control both static and dynamic induced settlements. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and Cone Penetration Test (CPTu) explorations were performed prior to and post soil improvement to compare the liquefaction potential and the Factors of Safety associated with the two conditions. Finally, the soil improvement installation rate is presented. Soil improvement using Rammed Aggregate Piers represented a suitable alternative to support storage tanks foundation in potentially liquefiable areas.

"A kinematically admissible velocity field is applied to study the arching phenomenon in a cohesionless granular backfill placed between two rough vertical inflexible walls. The study is different from the previous works which are almost entirely based on statically admissible stress fields. It is shown that the development of arches is strongly influenced by the previous loading history of the backfill which controls the nature of the constitutive laws that govern the mode of stress deformation of the backfill. This preliminary study employs simple models in order to show the potential use of such an approach in evaluating and understanding mine backfill behaviour in the underground excavation. The pressure exerted on the floor supporting the backfill is also studied in some detail.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the importance of the design of mine backfill has been discussed extensively by a number of authors, i.e. Hassani et al. (1985), such theories have not as yet been incorporated in design criteria for underground mine backfilling operation . One factor that such theories must incorporate is the so-called arching action .The phenomenon of arching has been the subject of study by many researchers in the field of civil engineering and mining engineering. Among these scholars the works of Terzaghi (1943), Krynine (1945), Lusher and Hoeg (1964) and Handy (1985) are noteworthy. All these authors use a statically admissible stress field as a starting point to develop their theories. The approach taken by the authors of the present paper is completely different because they employ a kinematicallyadmissible velocity field. It is their belief that the arching phenomenon is closely linked to the interlocking of grains as manifested by the degree of dilatation of the granular mass when subjected to a shearing process.This paper is written in the following sequence. To define the interlocking quantitatively it is necessary to state the constitutive law governing the stress deformation characateristics of the granular mass. This is done in the next section as the law proposed by Poorooshasb and Pietruszazck (1985, 1986) is stated and simplified to suit the present analysis. Next the mode of formation of an arch in a simple system consisting of a mass of backfill sandwiched between two vertical rough walls of infinite extent is examined. The velocity field obtained from the above example is used to obtain solutions to two more complicated situations. The first situation assumes that the backfill is supported, in addition to the vertical rough walls, by a Winkler foundation at its base. The second situation assumes that the Winkler foundation has been replaced by a horizontal beam of uniform section and simply supported at its extremities. The findings of the study are summarized and their practical implications discussed in the concluding remarks."

Possibilities and Working of the Specific Agglomeration of Fibrous Materials and Residues Plant based fibrous materials are becoming of increasing interest in a multitude of industrial applications. Main advantages are the specific lower energy demand and virtually closed CO2 cycle, excellent mechanical properties based on low density as well as a high level of recyclables. In contrast, processing and handling of such materials is associated with a number of challenges. These challenges are mainly related to specific morphological characteristics in correlation to fibre length and structure (branching and splices). Specific problems in further processing steps including transport, dosage or storage for natural fibre compounding, result from form-locking bonds leading to burling, clusters or plaits. Technologies of fibre processing are well known, but other than textile based technologies they generally result in intermediate goods which do not allow direct industrial application. The investigation to be presented is based on results of recent research activities and shows two possible technical solutions of innovative fibre agglomeration procedures. These methods allow the conversion of middle to long fibres into a form, which eases further processing and dosage significantly and therefore allows free flowing too. The procedures are based on the working principles of rolling and winding technology. Within the work, both of the patented methods and their respected lab-scaled devices will be described. Further, results will be shown for an up-scaled rolling agglomeration unit applying the developed principle and consisting of multiple process zones. Possible variations of the resulting product characteristics and the impact of different process parameters will be discussed based on the trials with natural fibre (hemp and flax) agglomeration. As a main outcome of the research, product qualities can be supplied according to the requirements of the specific application in correlation to agglomerate strength, porosity or form. In conclusion, recent developments for specific methods of characterization will be depicted.

INTRODUCTION With only about 30% of Japan's entire population served by sewer systems at the end of 1980, extensive sewerage construction programs have been implemented. As major sewer networks in large cities are near completion, construction of smaller sewer networks in less populated areas and branch sewers in urban areas is on the rise, where a demand for sewer tunnels of 600mm to 1500mm diameter is very heavy. The pipe jacking technique, usually employed to excavate such small diameter tunnels, therefore has become the subject of further technological development and sophistication to cope with the increasing volume of construction. At the 1979 RETC, the state of the art on the slurry shield tunneling method at that time was reported. This paper is a follow up to the last paper and discusses a newly developed boulder crushing equipment and automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application. Such technological advancement as high-degree mechanization and automation will significantly improve tunneling operations in response to the aging society to come. Through application of the technique on so called factory automation, this is a step towards field automation for the construction industry.

A phenomenological model is presented that relates Pb-Zn mineralisation to proximal geopressure zones. Typically, geopressure zones (GPZ) consist of masses of undercompacted sediment encapsulated within impermeable shales and are characterised by high formation fluid pressures. Heat flow is perturbed in some GPZ on account of their insulating properties. Geothermal gradients as high as 150 degrees C/km have been observed over short distances in the sediments of the US coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Some modern geopressure zones are known to reach temperatures of 120-150 degrees C at depths of 2.5-3.5 km. It is demonstrated that the zones may act as proximal sources of hydrothermal fluids, thus explaining the high temperatures of mineralisation observed in the deposits, which are hosted in basins characterised by thick, rapidly deposited, shale-rich clastic sequences

"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. L’Échancrure de Cobalt est un large domaine de roches sédimentaires clastiques d’âge Paléoprotérozoïque qui reposent en discordance sur la ceinture de roches vertes d’Abitibi d’âge Archéen. La Diabase de Nipissing, mise en place vers 2219 Ma et qui constitue un réseau de sills et de dykes d’importance régionale, est présente dans l’ensemble de l’échancrure et constitue la roche-hôte principale des systèmes de veines aurifères-polymétalliques de la propriété Merico-Ethel, près de la bordure nord-est de l’Échancrure de Cobalt. Ces veines à minéralisation aurifère et polymétallique constituent un système de veines de calcite-quartz sécantes d’orientation principalement est-ouest et à pendage fort qui se sont formées peu de temps après la cristallisation de la Diabase de Nipissing (à ~15 Ma près, d’après les âges Pb-Pb). La minéralogie de la minéralisation est complexe; elle consiste typiquement en sulfures, en arséniures, en métaux natifs (or et argent) et en hématite spéculaire, préférentiellement concentrés à l’interface entre les silicates et la gangue de calcite. La séquence de déposition simplifiée des minéraux dans les veines est : (1) «Stade précoce» pyrite ± chalcopyrite encaissés dans une gangue de quartz ± chlorite; (2) "Stade principal" sulfures polymétalliques (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U), arséniures, et métaux natifs dans une gangue de calcite; et (3) "Stade tardif" calcite massive ± galène. L’altération pénétrative de la Diabase de Nipissing est confinée à des halos étroits (<5 cm) présentant des assemblages marquées par la présence de calcite-chlorite-épidote, tandis qu’un faible halo d’altération en hématite spéculaire, calcite et en allanite-épidote est noté dans les roches sédimentaires environnantes. De par leur âge, leur géologie, leur minéralogie leur paragenèse et leur morphologie, les systèmes de veines aurifères de Merico-Ethel ressemblent beaucoup aux gîtes filoniens d’argent-sulfoarséniures des camps miniers historiques de Cobalt et de Gowganda. Ces observations indiquent que ces veines aurifères constituent une variante des systèmes des veines argentifères et qu’elles partagent"

It is known that the stress state inside rock discs under Brazilian tests is neither simple compression nor tension, but a complex combination of both stress types, as well as for a beam subjected to bending, where compressive and tensile stresses are separated by the neutral axis. In this study, AE generation was obtained on pure white marbles from south Portugal that were submitted to both Brazilian and bending tests. Main questions to be answered were: (1) Does Kaiser effect exist in tests which create complex distributions of tension and compression? (2) Are there any meaningful differences in AE behavior of marble under Brazilian and bending tests?

IMC Esterhazy is a unique mining operation in Canada; in fact, it is unique to potash mining in general. Not only is thi&apos;3 a trackless operation utilizing shuttle cars and belt conveyors in its material handling systems, but it excavates all of the ore with continuous boring machine<:;.

During the past few years the use of mechanical equipment for the loading and transportation of coal at the working face has rapidly increased . Many mining officials are of the opinion that mechanical methods have tended to reduce the hazards of mining, and a number of statements have been made to this effect . Little actual data upon which to base conclusions in regard to the relative safety of various methods of mining have been made available . While it may be possible that these systems of mechanical mining are inherently less hazardous , obvious dangers should not be disregarded in the belief that the mere act of installing mechanical loading equipment automatically brings about better accident records . The same rules and regulations , modified to meet the new regime must be applied with the same discipline as heretofore . By diligent study and application there is reason to believe that new methods of concentrated mining can be utilized with at least a possibility of increased accident performance . With the idea of preventing accidents by taking available precautions against their occurrence , attention should be directed to the dangers that exist where room and face conveyors are in operation . Due to the cost pressure prevalent in the mining industry at the present time mechanical means are often used in an attempt to decrease cost of production. The management , after having spent considerable sums of money for new equipment , is expected by stockholders and investors to show results by increasing tonnage and reducing operating costs . Consequently the operating officials apply the same pressure to local mine officials to obtain results . The natural reaction of the superintendent and mine foreman is to secure the maximum production from the new method , and unfortunately safety is frequently , if not generally , sacrificed to this end . In many instances , operators of new types of mechanical loaders are difficult to secure and after being obtained are difficult to hold , especially if the new equipment is more or less in the experimental stage . The tendency is to handle the machine operators with " gloved hands " and to permit many unsafe practices which ordinarily would not be allowed, in order to keep from antagonizing them and losing their services . Although these unsafe practices become habitual and even uneconomical , conditions thus established are difficult , sometimes impossible , to change .

A Samarco Mineração, desde o início de suas atividades em 1977 na mina de Germano, tem sido pioneira na lavra e beneficiamento de minério de ferro friável e de baixo teor (itabiritos). Atualmente, a queda no teor de Fe associada à maior participação de materiais compactos, semi-compactos e com maior presença de contaminantes tem impactado na recuperação do circuito de flotação convencional do concentrador I. A redução da recuperação nessa etapa de flotação motivou a reavaliação do circuito de flotação atual buscando alternativas para reestabelecer a recuperação sem afetar o teor de concentrado final e com menor investimento. Foram realizadas amostragens, caracterização física e química das amostras e, em seguida, execução dos ensaios de flotação em bancada, balanço de massas e desenvolvimento de modelos para a simulação de circuitos. Os resultados analisados mostraram oportunidades de melhoria do desempenho do circuito. O circuito de flotação antes da modificação era composto das etapas: rougher, cleaner, recleaner e scavenger. Com a reavaliação do circuito, a recleaner foi transformada em cleaner da scavenger. O concentrado scavenger antes da modificação possuía teores de 23%Fe e representava 38% da alimentação nova. Com a modificação do circuito, a carga circulante foi reduzida de 36% para 15% e o teor de ferro subiu para 41,7%, aumentando o tempo de residência. O teor de ferro no rejeito global foi reduzido de 10,92% (média 2013) para 10,2% gerando ganhos de recuperação em massa e metalúrgica.

The nature of fracture in unnotched tensile and notched tensile sheet and round specimens and V -notched and precracked Charpy-type sheet specimens of both wrought stress -relieved and re-crystallized molybdenum was investigated over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C. The sharp rise in fracture stress, for unnotched tensile samples, as the temperature is increased above the brittleness transition temperature (Tb), is found to be a result of an increase in flow stress due to plastic constraint and an increased strain rate which results from the onset of necking at Tb . Quasi-brittle fracture in notched tensile samples is found to occur when the tensile stress at the elastic-plastic interface, beneath the root of the notch, reaches a maximum critical value, which is independent of test temperature over the range from —78° to 25°C, but dependent on microstructure. In the temperature range between 150° and 300°C, unnotched tensile and notched tensile samples alike are found to fracture by a ductile fibrous tearing process which is discontinuous in nature, as a result of the competition between the processes of tearing, through continued plastic flow, and local work hardening. Results from the V-notched and fatigue-cracked Charpy-type impact tests demonstrate that crack initiation is the governing factor in the low-temperature (-78° to 25°C) fracture process for molybdenum. In recent years, there has been considerable interest, and a commensurate number of investigations, concerning the duc tile-to-brittle transition in refractory metals. There has not developed, however, a satisfactory explanation for the uniaxial tensile fracture-stress transition which accompanies the well-known ductility transition. This matter therefore warranted investigation. In a similar manner, the increased importance of notched tensile strength values in evaluating materials and in design criteria requires a better understanding of the factors which control the fracture behavior of notched tensile samples. In a previous investigation1 of the nature of initial yielding and fracture in notched sheet molybdenum at room temperature, it was suggested that plastic constraint was the controlling factor in governing the fracture behavior of notched samples. The final portion of this investigation was concerned with the fracture toughness of molybdenum. Of particular interest was the comparison of effective surface energies for fracture in V-notched samples with fatigue-cracked, Charpy-type samples in order to ascertain the relative importance of the initiation and propagation phases of the fracture process. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Sheet tensile, notched tensile, and V-notched Charpy specimens were prepared from 50-mil, stress-relieved molybdenum sheet.* Half of these specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1200°C and 7.5 x l0-5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a relatively uniform grain size of 0.30 mm diameter. Round notched and unnotched tensile specimens were prepared from warm-rolled and swaged 5/8-in.-diam bar.* These specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1350°C and 5 x lom5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Material analyses in ppm were: C N O H Sheet 290 10 4 1 Bar 50 30 30 2 The unnotched tensile sheet specimens had a 1/4-in. gage width and a 1-in. gage length. The unnotched tensile round specimens had a 9/32-in. gage diameter and a 1-1/4-in. gage length. The sheet and round notch tensile specimens are shown in Fig. 1. All of the notched tensile specimens tested were tandem-notched in order to study the location and mode of fracture initiation. The tandem-notched specimens were carefully machined so that the largest variation in notch depth on a single specimen was 0.001 in. Thus, when fracture occurs, the extent of plastic deformation that exists in the un-fractured notch section is that which exists just prior to fracture. All of the tandem-notched sheet specimens were electrolytic ally polished and chemically etched prior to testing. The V-notched Charpy-type specimens machined from the 50-mil sheet material had the standard dimensions of 2.125 in. long, 0.394 in. deep, and a 0.010-in. root radius. The unnotched tensile and notched tensile tests were conducted over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C, in a 10,000-lb Instron Universal Testing Machine, at a constant crosshead speed of 0.020 in. per min. Sticking phenomenon occurring during hot rolling of two STS 430JlL ferritic stainless steels was analyzed by hot-rolling simulation tests. The sticking started from the initial nucleation stage in which the rolled materials were stuck onto the roll specimen surface, proceeded to the growth stage in which stuck fragments grew further, and reached the saturation stage. The modified 430JlL steel had a smaller number of sticking nucleation sites and slower growth rate than the conventional 430JlL steel because of higher high temperature hardness, thereby leading to less serious sticking. When the simulation test was conducted at 1070 °c, Cr oxides were formed on the surface of the rolled materials, and thus the sticking was drastically reduced because of the increased surface hardness of the rolled materials. In order to prevent the sticking, high-temperature properties of the rolled materials should be enhanced when rolled at 900°C or 1000 °C, and rolling conditions and alloying compositions, under which the oxide formation was promoted, were more important than high-temperature properties when rolled at higher temperatures than 1000 oC.

A pile driving and testing program was undertaken to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity, particularly in uplift, of 360- and 460-mm (14- and 18-inch) square prestressed concrete piles and provide foundation design parameters for the New Mid-Point Bridge project in Fort Myers, Florida. Nine piles were dynamically monitored during installation, and six piles were monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and uplift and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". In addition, two static load tests (tension and compression) were performed to calibrated the results obtain during the dynamic testing. This paper presents descriptions of the pile driving testing program along with findings regarding pile uplift and compression capacities from the static load testing, pile capacities from dynamic testing (CAPWAP® analyses), soil-pile adhesion values, wave equation factors, soil strength vs. time dependency, foundation design (anticipated pile tip elevation) and pile driving recommendations.

Keywords: Thermal, conductivity, diffusivity, expansion, history, density, specific heat capacity, industrial rich high-carbon manganese slag The thermal conductivity of slag is an important parameter in the design of furnace-containment systems based on freeze-lining technology. Literature indicates that the crystal content of a slag has a significant influence on its thermal conductivity. Industrial, rich, manganese-bearing slag was cooled at different rates to create samples with different microstructures. The coefficients of thermal conductivity of these samples were measured in a nitrogen atmosphere from room temperature to 990°C at 100°C intervals. The laser-flash measurement technique was used for this purpose. Follow-up investigations included XRF and XRD and modelling in FACTSage.

Because the cutting and polishing of stones are parts of the work of the Bureau of Mines in its study of rocks and minerals and in the determination of specimens sent in for identification, it was decided that a circular covering the subject in a general way would be of practical interest. As several books and periodicals give details of the problems in cutting and polishing, this report will not duplicate their information more than necessary.
