The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. Block caving is an underground mining method that can provide high production capacities at low operating costs. This enables the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies and attracts industry towards the method. Block caving operations require significant initial capital investment and predictable cave propagation is crucial to safety and economic success. Lack of access to observe the caving process hinders our ability to learn how the rock mass and geological structures are reacting to mining. Virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) enables the integration and investigation of multiple, large caving data sets and provides a viable alternative to visualise rock mass response without physical access to the cave. Point instrumentation is incapable of providing an overview of cave performance and seismic monitoring, while providing an overview of the rock mass and the response of structures to caving, is only useful when linked to the caving activities. The integration of point instrumentation data with seismic monitoring information, coupled with scientific visualisation of the mining system in a virtual reality environment, provides a powerful means for understanding caving performance.This paper describes the use of a VRSV module at UNSW Australia, designed for investigating the block cave mining system from a case study operation. This module has been used to investigate the location and chronological evolution of seismicity to understand sources of damage resulting in seismic space-time sequences (SSTS) in the caving system. The events within an SSTS represent damage that is spatially and temporally related. An SSTS group represents a collection of microseismic events from a reasonably competent region of the rock mass that has experienced a stress change significant enough to cause sequential damage. SSTS group locations have been seen to be the path of subsequent cave propagation. Thus, SSTS analysis enables insight to further our understanding of rock mass damage in caving geomechanics through analysis of historic data. Selective-reductive leaching of manganese from low-grade manganese ore using tannic acid as a reductant in acidic media was demonstrated by XRD, SEM-EDX characterization, and batch leaching studies at room temperature. The pH change in the liquid phase before and after leaching revealed that selectivity of manganese over iron was due to the hydrolysis of iron. The acidity in the liquid phase during leaching was dictated by two mechanisms: proton-consuming reaction (manganese oxide reduction by tannic acid) and proton-producing reaction (ferric ion reduction by tannic acid to produce ferrous ion). Based on the leaching studies, the more prevalent reaction between these two was determined by initial leaching conditions: tannic acid concentration, sulfuric acid concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperatures, and agitation time. Kinetic studies revealed that maximum recovery was attained within 6-h agitation, which indicated a product layer diffusion process.

Secondary leaching of previously leached supergene copper ore has been developed and implemented at Teck’s Quebrada Blanca operations. This consists of using in-situ leaching techniques aided by geophysics to recover the residual metal value from dormant copper leaching heaps. These heaps of crushed and agglomerated ore had been leached 20 years previously but still contained significant copper values. The concept was first tested on a 3,200 m² sector, where injection wells introduced leaching solution into a production zone and electro-resistivity tomography was used to track solution movement within. Operating parameters such as well spacing and injection flow rates were determined. Copper recovery and leaching performance were evaluated based on solution and metallurgical balances. Both ferric leaching and bacterial leaching were enhanced through strategies to pull air into the heap. Positive results from the initial test prompted a larger, industrial pilot test on a 60,000 m² area and 97 injection wells. This larger test obtained a copper recovery of 30% in 457 days. Secondary recovery is now being implemented to all of the abandoned heaps at Quebrada Blanca and has become a production stream. This technology has the potential of wide application to mature copper heap leach operations, and Teck has patented the process and associated methodologies. INTRODUCTION Heap leaching of copper secondary sulphides has been carried out at Quebrada Blanca (QB) since 1994. Ore from the supergene deposit was crushed and agglomerated prior to leaching. Originally, the ore was leached in 6 m lifts stacked one on top of another, known as a static pad configuration. However, in 1998, after the second lift, the operation changed to a dynamic pad configuration; the ore was leached in a single lift and the resulting residues were removed to make way for fresh ore (Yáñez, Ahlborn, & Ramos, 2007). The first two static lifts were left in place and served as a foundation for the dynamic lifts above. Those two buried lifts of leached residues, some 16.8 million tonnes and covering an area of approximately 0.71 million m², remained buried under the dynamic pad.

O presente trabalho abrange o estudo de um sistema de transporte de matéria prima para a produção de superfosfato granulado, composto por uma sequência de três transportadores de correia convencional e um elevador de canecas. Os componentes destes equipamentos são retratados separadamente, em seguida explica-se o funcionamento do conjunto. São expostos os problemas no desempenho do equipamento e as causas identificadas. Por este motivo, analisa-se a viabilidade econômica da substituição do equipamento atual por um transportador de correia tubular, sistema mais avançado que também é detalhado através da descrição de seus componentes e funcionamento. A análise inicia-se com o dimensionamento dos dois tipos de equipamento de acordo com a planta disponível. Então se compara o cenário atual com o proposto, considerando o desperdício de produto, tempo e custo de paradas para manutenção e custo de implantação do novo equipamento.

The current study is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) on-going subsidence research program. The long-term objective of the DOE program is to develop analytical methods of subsidence prediction applicable over a broad range of geologic and mining conditions encountered in the United States. The DOE currently has several contracts in progress to develop a sound data base that can be used in the development of predictive models. Dames & Moore is currently under contract to the DOE to collect and analyze detailed subsidence and hydrologic data from a coal mine employing longwall mining methods in the Eastern Coal Province. Work under Contract No. DE-AC22-80PC 30335 began in October of 1980 and will continue through September of 1984. This paper summarizes the work that has been completed through September of 1981 and presents the results that have been achieved during this period. Technical difficulties encountered during both the installation and monitoring phases are discussed, and recommendations for future work are presented.

TBM case histories from over 400 tunnel sections are analyzed presenting a comprehensive application of the Rock Mass Excavability (RME) index (Bieniawski et al.2006). The paper introduces two new adjustment factors, called the Factor of Tunnel Length and the Factor of Crew Effectiveness, which were established to represent more realistically the interaction of the rock mass characteristics, the TBM parameters and the performance of the crew operating the machine. A new correlation is provided for predicting the average rate of advance of double-shield TBMs working specifically in the double-shield mode.

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

The aced for reliable reserves of the essential element, manganese, has been a continuing concern of the Federal Government for more than three decades. Because of the increasing vulnerability of outside sources of supply efforts have been intensified to find a means for beneficiating United States domestic deposits. The deposits of most interest would of necessity be near, or have access to, suitable transportation to processing plants. The Georgia manganiferous iron deposits represent some 10 million tons4 of ore readily available to southern iron and steel industries, if a manganese recovery process capable of functioning in the presence of large quantities of iron can be developed. In addition, a successful method for beneficiating the Georgia ore could produce a significant quantity of high-grade iron concentrate. The Differential sulfatization process developed 47 the Bureau of Mines5 seemed to be well suited for this application, particularly because it results in low concentrations of iron in the leach liquors with relatively complete extractions of manganese. In this process, manganese in the presence of iron is preferentially reacted with sulfur dioxide at elevated temperatures and subsequently extracted with water.

THE Talisman mine is situated on the Waitawheta (pronounced Wytaffetta) river just above its junction with the Chinemuri (pronounced Chinnemurre) river near Karangahake, NZ. The explored reef-bearing portion of the claim includes the angleformed by the junction of the rivers and extends southwards for slightly over a mile (See Plate V.). The country is mountainous both rivers flowing through precipitous gorges.The trig. station on Karangahake mountain is almost directly above the workings on the Bonanza section and is 1680 ft. above river level, the adit from the gorge giving 1200 ft. of backs measured vertically. The officers of the N.Z. Geological Survey are engaged in a detailed survey of the Waihi district and the rocks of Karangahake are under examination. The rocks of the district are andesites and dacites much altered and silicified. One of these exhibits a columnar structure in the mass in the Waitawheta gorge near the surface workings on Taukani hill, also on the southern bank...

Up to now, Topsøe WSA (Wet gas Sulphuric Acid) plants have been in operation for almost 30 years, and close to 80 plants have been sold. In spite of its unique features and ability to treat gases without any prior drying, the WSA technology has had certain restrictions with regards to SO2 concentration in the feed gas, and the overall conversion of SO2 by catalytic means has been limited to approx. 99.7%. In commercial scale sulphuric acid production on the basis of elemental sulphur and metallurgical off-gases, there is a demand for higher SO2 conversion and treatment of gases with a higher content of SO2. Therefore Topsoe has further developed its WSA technology to cope with these demands. This paper will explain more about the principles of such new development and leave the delegate with a better understanding of the potentials of the new generation of the WSA technology from Topsoe.

A espumação de escória pode ser definida como sendo o aumento na espessura da camada de escória que ocorre devido à evolução de bolhas de CO(g) durante a operação do forno elétrico a arco. Um dos maiores benefícios obtidos com a espumação da escória no forno elétrico a arco é a diminuição dos custos com eletricidade. O presente trabalho tem por objetivos estudar por meio da termodinâmica computacional alguns tópicos do sistema quaternário CaO-SiO2-FeO-MgO (CSFM) importante na siderurgia pela conexão com o tema espumação de escória, que são: (i) composições de saturação das fases sólidas ‘MgO’ e ‘CaO’ e (ii) a viscosidade efetiva de um ponto particular deste sistema.

O trabalho mostra um estudo de caso da ArcelorMittal Tubarão onde, com o objetivo de incrementar a reciclagem de escórias de dessulfuração, foram analisadas as influências do processo de beneficiamento por separação magnética de forma a obter um coproduto com menor presença de S e maior concentração de Fe e assim permitir sua maior reutilização na Sinterização. O projeto se desenvolveu em etapas de amostragem, caracterização, testes experimentais de laboratório, processamento em escala industrial e, por fim, com a adição do coproduto na Sinterização e compilação de resultados. O trabalho conclui a viabilidade de alteração das configurações de processamento com resultados positivos permitindo incremento de consumo de escórias de dessulfuração na Sinterização com ganhos financeiros e ambientais.

"Introduction""Pebble milling"" is a term used to describe secondary grinding done with rock pebbles rather than steel balls or other steel or metal shapes. This paper discusses pebble milling with particular attention being paid to uranium grinding circuits.Pebble milling is typically employed:a. where the cost of steel balls becomes exorbitant, as may be the case in an isolated area.b. where the extra steel added from steel ball consumption may be detrimental to further processing.c. where the over-all economics favour the use of pebbles rather than ball.Pebble milling differs from autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding in that a sized product has been removed from some part of the primary comminution circuit, and it is this sized product which is added as grinding media to the pebble milling stage. The pebbles do not necessarily have to be produced from the ore- ""foreign"" pebbles can be used. Also, pebble milling generally refers to grinding from a fine size, below about 6 mesh (3360 micron), with relatively small media, that is, secondary grinding. In South Africa, however, primary pebble mills are sometimes used to grind crusher house product, and thus function in place of rod mills. Pebbles for this service are large and heavy as they must weigh as much as balls used in similar service.The first large applications of pebble milling were in South Africa(n. ""Tube milling"" with pebbles started in 1904. The tube mill was simply a tumbling mill with a length to diameter ratio over two. A ""typical"" early tube mill was 5.5 ft. (1.7 m) in diameter and 16 ft. (4.9 m) in length. Diameters increased steadily. King(n mentions 8-ft. (2.4 m) units in his 1949 book. By 1961, the largest units discussed by Jackson('' were 12ft. (3. 7 m) in diameter."

South Africa?s primary electricity supplier, Eskom, provides incentives to reduce power demand during critical times by granting capital through a Demand Side Management programme. DSM encourages the end user to review and optimize energy consuming systems and use capital, provided by Eskom, to purchase or modify the equipment required to achieve a load-shift. As part of the DSM agreement the mine ultimately acquires the capital equipment and benefits from reduced power costs, but in return is required to sustain the load-shift tactic for up to five years. The paper focuses on one DSM tactic, main fan energy management. In this case, reduced air flows during selected peak and off peak periods, results in a substantial reduction in peak power demand. DSM incentives provided capital for automated main fan control as well as improved control of the mine ventilation systems. To examine the work in detail Gold Fields Ltd Driefontein gold mine near Johannesburg was chosen as a case study.

The consolidation of mom matrix composite monotapes occurs by the plastic (time independant) and creep deformation of monotape asperities. Past models of the process used seperate micromechanical analyses of the contact deformation by (rate independent) plasticity and power law creep (i.e steady state creep). These models are now used to simulate consolidation and to optimize/control consolidation process cycles so that the composite's microstructure is "steered" to, a user defined goal state. However, the models do not incorporate the sometimes dominant transient creep process and the instantaneous response of the plasticity mechanism causes finite discontinuities in the microstructure state vector field and therefore eliminates the possibility of using the powerful array of trajectory optimization schemes that all require continuous vector field for optimization and control. To overcome this problem, a inified creep/plasticity constitutive model that results in a continuous state vector field is used to rederive the contact deformation response during monotape consolidation. The contact blunting of a laterally constrained hemispherical asperity is first analyzed and its response represented by two coefficients; one relating the contact area to the blunting strain (C), the second, the mean contact pressure to the blunting rate (F).The C and F coefficients for this unified blunting problem are then obtained by finite element analysis, and detailed results presented for two composite matri-ces of topical interest (Ti-24A1-11Nb and Ti-6Al-4V).

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

This paper is based on observations made during a recent visit by the writer to three of the dust research laboratories .in West Germany, each .of which is mainly concerned with studymg the composition and character of the respirable dust produced in mines or at industrial sites. The three institutes are discussed as regards their orgamzat10n and duties, their methods of dust sampling and analysis, and recent trends in research and development. An extensive bibliography completes the paper. Introduction A RECENT trip to Europe to attend international conferences m Austria and m Belgium gave the writer the opportunity to visit a number of research laboratories and mines in Western Europe. The visits to the dust research laboratories in West Germany are the basis of this report. In Germany, cooperative associations formed prior to and since the turn of the 20th Century to promote the safety and welfare of their workers have recognized the effects of airborne dust on the general health of the labour force.
