One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. Zinc mining at Jefferson City began in 1854 with small scale production of oxidized ore from open pits. Significant production began in 1913 with the development of the Mascot Mine by the American Zinc Company. In 1965, four flotation mills were treating crude ore at the rate of about 12,000 tons per day and the Mascot-Jefferson City district currently is the largest zinc producing area in the United States. The producing mines, Mascot, Young, North Friends Station, New Market Zinc, Grasselli, Davis-Bible, Coy, and the Jefferson City, are 15 to 28 miles northeast of Knoxville in the Valley and Ridge physiographic province, an area of gentle relief lying between the more rugged Great Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland escarpment. The ore is strata bound, occurring essentially within a stratigraphic range of 200 feet in the Lower Kingsport and Upper Longview formations of Lower Ordovician age. In the lower strata of the mineralized section, the ore generally is found in coarsely crystalline elastic dolomite breccia containing silica and chert debris within a sequence of aphanitic limestones. The upper strata of the mineralized section are fine-grained primary dolomites that, in the ore zones, have been fragmented in mosaic patterns by solution collapse with the interfragmental space filled by white gangue dolomite and sphalerite. The mineralogy is unusually simple, sphalerite being the only important sulfide. Pyrite is very sparse. Dolomite gangue is abundant, silica was deposited in quite small amounts, calcite is minor, and fluorite and barite are very rare. The principal ore controlling structures are rubble breccia zones that were formed during the post-Lower Ordovician-pre-Middle Ordovician erosion interval by supergene solution as a phase of the development of a regional karst system of underground drainage that extended to' depths of at least 800 feet. The major Appalachian orogenic structures are post-ore and have been superimposed on the ore bodies. There is substantial evidence to support the current thinking of the writers that the ore deposits were formed at a depth not exc1~eding 800 feet.

O Alto-Forno 3 da CSN, Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional, iniciou-se sua 3ª campanha no dia 07/08/2001. Chama-se cadinho à região localizada na base do alto-forno cuja finalidade é armazenar, por um período de tempo controlado, o ferro-gusa e a escória. Esta região é altamente crítica para a operação do equipamento, pois o contato permanente do fluxo de ferro-gusa líquido torna esta área altamente suscetível a desgastes. A construção do cadinho é realizada de modo a minimizar este efeito, utilizando-se blocos de carbono de alta resistência em suas paredes internas. Assim, o cadinho determina a vida útil de um alto-forno. A preservação do desgaste dos blocos do cadinho com titânio é de vital importância, visto que, existem diversos riscos da não monitoração, tais como: identificação de possíveis pontos quentes, desgaste acentuado dos blocos de carbono, por temperatura elevada, rompimento do cadinho com vazamento de gusa líquido com conseqüente risco de atingir pessoas e grandes danos ao equipamento e parada operacional do Alto-forno 3 por longo período. O sistema de injeção de titânio possibilita a mitigação dos pontos quente preservando o cadinho e estendendo a campanha do Alto-forno. O sistema de injeção de titânio mostrou sua funcionalidade e aplicação na injeção de llmenita, pó de coletor, plástico e outros sólidos granulados injetados nas ventaneiras do Alto-Forno 3, através de um novo sistema de automação, incluindo: PLC, balança de pesagem, novas malhas de controle inéditas. Trata-se de um processo inédito nas Américas. Com este desenvolvimento, a vida útil do cadinho do Alto-Forno 3 poderá ser expandida elevando sua atual campanha para mais que 20 anos.

D.G. Wilder I found the suggestion that the amount of displacement of a fault can be numerically related to the thickness of gouge or breccia to be both intuitively satisfying and intriguing. I have long agreed that there is some type of relationship between the amount of gouge and the amount of displacement of faults. I congratulate the author for developing a numerical relationship between them. However, I am concerned that the limits for applying this relationship be fully understood. An underlying assumption in this approach is that there is either a uniform thickness of gouge or breccia along a given fault or the thickness does not vary widely. Since it is not always possible to confirm this, the displacements derived by this method should be viewed with caution unless significant fault extent can be observed. At the Nevada Test Site, in drifts constructed in granite for test emplacement of spent nuclear reactor fuel, we found a fault with 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gouge. Within a few meters of this location, the fault had no clay gouge, but rather consisted of a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides. Based on Fig. 1, the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness of gouge would indicate a displacement in excess of 30 m (98 ft). However, no gouge thickness would indicate essentially no displacement. Based on a quartz vein that terminated on the fault, and is not identified nearby, an estimated displacement of more than a few meters was made. This estimate is consistent with that obtained using the regression line proposed in the paper if the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness for the gouge is used. However, using the regression curves with zero thickness would not yield results consistent with what was observed in the field. Therefore, it is important to recognize that the suggested procedure would properly yield a range of probable displacements. ? *Work performed under the auspices of the US Department of Energy by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract W-7405-Eng-48. Reply by E.C. Robertson It is certainly true that the t (thickness) of gg-bx (gouge and breccia) on a fault does vary along the fault. My observations have been that near the termination of a fault, the displacement d is small and the t is also small, whereas the maximum d and t will usually be found in the central part of the fault. The information on gg-bx and t of the fault found in granite in the NTS tunnel by Mr. Wilder could be interpreted somewhat differently than he does. He speaks of the fault changing within a few meters from 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gg to "a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides," but no gg. The highly fractured rock may be taken to be bx, rock not so finely ground as gg but still crushed by the fault movement, equivalent to the gg in my usage, and probably occupying about the same t. Mr. Wilder's estimates for the fault in the NTS tunnel for t of 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) and for d of a quartz vein, in excess of "a few meters," would place the point on the low side of the central trend line in my Fig. 1, at the lower limit. There is, of course, a problem with determining d using displacement of only one planar surface. It would be greater or lesser depending on the rake of the movement. Finally, estimating the d of a fault from its t should be made with awareness of our present uncertainties, as pointed out by Mr. Wilder. Although the central trend line in my Fig. 1 has a ratio of d/t of 100, I have put the limiting ratios at 10 and 1000. Understanding of the values of the ratio will be improved only with collection of more data, for which the discussion of Mr. Wilder is much appreciated. G.C. Waterman E.C. Robertson's paper provides significant information to a geologist attempting to deduce fault offset by noting the products of structural dislocation. However, considerable mapping in underground and open-pit mines, and examination of structures produced in different geological settings, have convinced me that gouge and breccia thickness are controlled by geological conditions and fault movement. The following paragraphs suggest geological variables that control them. 1. Depth of Loading A near-surface fault resulting from tensional stress has more breccia/gouge than is produced by a similar stress at considerable depth. A deep-loaded compressional stress may produce a linear zone of schist, or structural dislocation may occur along an earlier formed belt of schist. Such "shear zones" are common in Canadian mines in precambrian rocks. In neither case can offset be directly deduced by an analysis of the minimal gouge/breccia in the shistose rocks. At greater depth, stress may be partially to wholly relieved by flowage. I vividly recall first noting the regional "Midas Thrust" in the Lark mine, Bingham Mining District, UT (where we called the structure the North Fault). My recorded notes, as I remember them, showed a narrow gouge streak separated the `Jordan" and "Commercial" limestone units from impure, muddy limestone beds of uncertain stratigraphic position. There have been strong industrial observations that clay minerals have a deleterious effect on mineral flotation grade and recovery. However, rigorous explanation on the role of clay minerals in flotation and effective ways to reduce their negative effects are not available. In this study, the flotation behaviour of low quality and high quality coal samples were examined at the Xstrata Oaky Creek Coal plant, and laboratory in fresh and recycled water with high ionic strength. Anionic and non-ionic dispersants including lignosulfonates and triblock copolymers were also tested with an objective of improving coal flotation in recycled water. It was found that overly stable froth was produced in the flotation of both low quality and high quality coal samples in saline water. Speciation modelling indicated precipitation of hydrophilic components which may adversely affect the flotation. Despite the overly stable froth, saline water produced much higher combustible recovery than fresh water without significantly losing the product quality. Lignosulfonate dispersants displayed a potential to improve the flotation in fresh water, but not in saline water. Significant flotation improvement was achieved with the triblock copolymer examined in both fresh and saline water.CITATION:Liu, D, Wang, B, Peng, Y and Vink, S, 2012. It is important to know the breakage mechanism in materials since this knowledge influences the results of subsequent grinding operations. There are two distinct failure mechanisms in breakage: one is tensile micro crack generation at low stresses, which leads to macroscopic failure by disintegration, and the other is formation of shear zones under heavier dynamic impact forces, which generates more fines as seen in crush zones in blasting. Tensile fracturing simply breaks the material into fragments. It is seen as the disintegration of the specimen into two or more separate fragments. This happens under the absence of lateral stresses and the material is free to expand. On the other hand, compressive-shear breakage produces finer fragments due to shear stresses. The first mechanism is observed in laboratory tensile and bending strength tests and the second mechanism is observed both in laboratory brittleness tests and in situ blasting operations under dynamic impact forces. The friability of rocks and ores can be determined by a brittleness test. A test apparatus to determine the friability value has been designed to suit limestone strength characteristics used in cement production. The friability and stored strain energy values of barite, marble, limestone and bauxite have been determined and compared with the corresponding Bond work index (Wi) and grindability index (G) of these materials. The physico-mechanical properties of the tested materials have also been determined to investigate their effect on friability and grinding. The relationships obtained between the indices were in surprisingly good agreement, with high correlations (0.99 and 0.97). The Bond work index and grindability index can therefore be estimated from the friability value, which can be determined more rapidly than the Bond test. But for certain rock types such as andesites the relationships does not hold. Key words: comminution, tensile stress, shear forces, brittleness test, strain energy.

"This paper presents an analysis of preliminary tests on the effect of in-situ and operating parameters on fragmentation of coal using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.l cm x 15.2 cm) were first. subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such. blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with a camera attached to it. Furthermore, the coal fragments were collected in bags using a vacuum cleaner. These fragments were then sieved for size distribution analysis. The results of the preliminary tests indicated that underground coal cutting can be simulated in the laboratory and the effects of the important parameters, i.e. operating and in-situ parameters, can be studied successfully. INTRODUCTIONThe continuous-mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, which were designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (1). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining .community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Australians have made some notable innovations and discoveries both in mining techniques and in the processing of ores. This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. ThE phenomenon of high ductility associated with a phase transformation, termed super plasticity, has been reported for a number of alloy systems. Abnormally high ductility has been observed during tensile testing of cast eutectic alloys of Pb-Sn and Mg-cu.1 Brasses of Cu-37 at. pct Zn and Cu-40 at. pct Zn elongate up to 180 pct when tested near their transformation temperature.' Enhanced ductility was also observed in Cu-47 at. pct Zn tested near the order-disorder transformation temperature. The most remarkable super-plastic effect reported to date is for the eutectoid alloy A1-60 at. pct Zn, where elongations up to 1000 pct have been reported.3 underwood4 has recently summarized the conditions that normally accompany the superplastic effect which are: 1) a phase transformation or allotropic change or order-disorder transformation; 2) an externally applied stress; 3) presence of an interface between two phases; and 4) a metastable structural condition. In addition, higher ductility is observed when the specimen is tested at slow deformation rates rather than under impact. The purpose of this note is to present evidence of the superplastic effect in a Cr-30 at. pct Co alloy. In addition, low-temperature bend ductility data are given for the alloy in the quenched, metastable, single-phased condition and in the slow-cooled, two-phased, near-equilibrium condition. Sixty-gram alloy ingots were prepared by noncon-sumable arc melting of iodide chromium and electron-beam-melted cobalt. These were cast into rectangular ingots and fabricated to 0.035-in. sheet by rolling at 2300°F. Attempts to roll at slightly lower temperatures invariably resulted in severe cracking, apparently due to presence of the brittle a phase below the transformation temperature of 2230°F. Tensile specimens with a 0.25 by 1.0 in. reduced section were cut from the sheet by electrical discharge machining. The specimens were heated at 2400°F for 1/2 hr to obtain a recrystallized, bcc, single-phased structure. Temperature of the specimens was subsequently raised or lowered to the desired test temperature and held for 10 min prior to testing at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min. Fig. 1 shows the chromium-rich side of the Cr-Co phase diagram.6 The alloy composition investigated is near the point of maximum solubility of cobalt in chromium, and the alloy is two-phased when in equilibrium at temperatures below 2230°F. The results of tensile tests conducted at temperatures indicated by X's in Fig. 1 are summarized in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Tensile elongations shown in Fig. 2 increase from 11 pct at 1900°F to a maximum of 160 pct at 2250°F. The elongation then decreases to 44 pct as the test temperature is further increased to 2600°F. The proximity of the temperature of highest elongation and the solvus temperature suggests that a superplastic effect is present in Cr + 30 at. pct Co similar to that observed for other alloys that show anomalous ductility. South Africa’s best-quality coal, located in the central Highveld basin, is becoming depleted and alternative sources of coal, such as the Waterberg coalfield, will have to be developed to supply the country with coal in the future. The quality of the coal being mined in the central basin is gradually becoming poorer. This necessitates that more of the coal be processed to improve the quality to meet customer requirements. The challenge to the coal processing industry is to process low-yielding coals to produce goodquality products and at the same time ensure that coal mining remains economically viable. This requires that more cost-effective coal processing technologies be investigated and implemented.

Portions of the 20 percent of the territory that are not ice-covered are highly mineralized. Greenland could become very productive if the present interest in exploration increases. The native population is the same as the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They speak the same language.

The fatigue behavior of AM60 high pressure die casting magnesium alloys was studied in a straincontrolled manner. The fatigue test was interrupted every 2,000 cycles for X-ray tomography scanning. The specimen was removed to be scanned on a desktop micro-CT system. The value of using X-ray tomography in a fatigue properties study was assessed with respect to porosity, cracks and fracture surfaces. The 3D analysis and model results showed porosity could be well measured and modelled in 3D. Defects bands are made of pores under 50 µm in volume-equivalent sphere diameter. Larger pores are randomly distributed in the region between two defect bands. Observation of cracks by X-ray tomography occurs in three ways such that the 3D model gives the best illustration of crack-porosity interaction while the other two methods have better detectability on crack initiation and crack tip observation. X-ray tomography is also of value in failure analysis on fracture surfaces. By summarizing X-ray tomography data during fatigue testing and observing fracture surfaces on a 3D model, a better understanding on the crack initiation, crack-porosity interaction and the morphology of fracture surface is achieved.

The extent of the water shortage in Arizona is reflected in mineral- industry water-use practices, in the high cost and low quality of water used at many operations, and in the stringency of State control of well drilling and pumping. Many mineral-industry operations are among those users most seriously affected by the uneven water supply.

Investigation of the "whole-rock" major element geochemistry of the Broken Hill lodes and of the rocks immediately enclosing them has been carried out on the full lengths of 19 diamond drill cores transecting B lode,A lode, No. 1 lens and Lead lode in The Zinc Corporation Ltd.-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, at the southern end of the line of lode.It appears that the abundances of all of the principal "non-sulphide components" - Si02, AI2O3, Ti02, CaO, MgO, MnO, K2O, TiO2 and P203 - are closely tied to the incidence of sulphide. The well-known direct relationship of calcium and manganese with the incidence of sulphide is confirmed, and to this is now added the pairing sulpnide-phosphate, which is particularly welldeveloped in the zinc lodes. It is also now shown that there is a clear inverse relationship between sulphide on one hand and AI2O3, Ti02 , MgO, and K2O on the other.Total Fe-which is an important constituent of both sulphide and non-sulphide-appears to occur in essentially similar amounts in ore and enclosing materials. The incidence of Na20, while generally depressed in ore, issomewhat erratic and equivocal. Si02 and sulphide usually show a highly systematic inverse relationship-a feature stemming inevitably from their being by far the two most abundant, and hence two co-dominant, materials ofthe ores.These features of elemental abundance are interpreted in the context of seaflooor hydrothermal ore deposition to give some insight into the amount and nature of detrital and of chemical sedimentation, the formation and accumulation of different clay minerals, the chemical and physical characteristics of the bottom waters, and the reasons for the comparative paucity of iron in the Broken Hill lode.

This old district is a major zinc and lead source and minor copper and barite source. Ores are chiefly in the Galena Dolomite and in limestones and dolomites of the Decorah and Platteville Formations, all of Middle Ordovician age. Locally, deposits have been mined from Lower Ordovician dolomites and Upper Cambrian sandstones. Small deposits of lead, zinc, and iron sulfides have been found in Upper Ordovician Maquoketa Shale and in Lower and Middle Silurian Edgewood, Kankakee, and Hopkinton Formations. No post-Precambrian igneous rocks are known in the region, and the granitic and metasedimentary Precambrian basement rocks unconformably underlie the district at depths of 1500 to 2000 feet. The strata are gently flexed and faulted, probably largely the result of gentle compressive and rotational adjustments in the underlying crystalline basement, especially along lineaments between basement blocks. Folds of three orders ·of magnitude are recognized, and many related reverse, strike-slip, and normal faults of small to moderate displacements are present. Zinc-lead deposits are commonly linear, arcuate, or elliptical in plan. Most ore occurs as vein fillings in fractures and as breccia fillings and lining vugs, but some is in bedded replacements and impregnations of wall rocks. The ore is in shears, small reverse and bedding- plant faults, joints, and solution-slump structures related to intermediate and small folds. The main primary minerals in their general sequence of deposition are quartz, illite, dolomite, pyrite, marcasite, cobaltite(?), sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, millerite, barite, and calcite. Wall-rock alterations include solution of the carbonate rocks, silicification, dolomitization, clay alteration, and sanded dolomite. Oxygenisotope, trace-element, lead-isotope, and sphalerite- stratigraphy studies are in progress. Fluid inclusions in sulfide and gangue minerals are filled with concentrated brines at 120° to 40°C. Sulfides are directly replaced by supergene minerals above the water table at 50 to 100 feet in depth. In this relatively cool climate and limestone environment, smithsonite is in pseudomorphs after sphalerite; solution transport and redeposition of supergene minerals are rare. Ore genesis is postulated by rising hot-water solutions-a mixture of heated connate, magmatic, and meteoric waters.

The need for more and better basic thermodynamic data for the oxides of many of the rare metals is evident to anyone who attempts thermodynamic calculations involving these substances. In continuation of a Bureau of Mines program to meet this need, this paper reports new experimental values of the heats of formation at 298.15° K. of the hexagonal crystalline variety of germanium dioxide and germanium dioxide glass. The values were obtained by means of combustion calorimetry and sodium hydroxide-solution calorimetry. The calorimetric results also made possible the derivation of values for the heat and entropy of fusion of hexagonal germanium dioxide at its melting point. The newly measured data were combined with previously known entropy and high-temperature heat content values to obtain heats and free energies of formation of germanium dioxide (in the hexagonal crystalline, glassy, and liquid states) over the temperature range from 298.15° to 2,000° K.
