"Metal-coated thermoplastic parts find more and more functional and aesthetic applications in the interior and exterior of cars. The vapor-deposited or electroplated coatings are usually composed of a plurality of nickel- and chromium-containing layers, which are applied to copper-containing carrier layers on the polymers. Previously, recycling processes are mainly focussed at the recovery or thermal utilization of the plastics. Targeted and selective recycling of the metallic coatings is usually not carried out. Together with several SME, BTU developed a process, in which a complete and separate recovery of all components in high purity is possible with biotechnological methods. The bioleaching is carried out with iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, especially Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The copper-containing layers are dissolved in the solution; chromium- and nickel-containing particles are precipitated as solids. After the bioleaching, a mechanical separation of the individual metal-containing components and their separate workup are carried out. End-products are metallic copper, a nickel- and chromium-containing solid and the cleaned plastics. The bioleaching ensures a high purity of the end products. Through the use of bacteria, which are also found in nature, the process is environmentally friendly. Compared to chemical leaching using inorganic acids, considerably shorter leaching times can be achieved. In addition to the optimization of the leaching process, the R/D-project also includes the development and testing of the apparatus technology.INTRODUCTION The material complexity of many end-user products has increased in recent years, especially in the fields of electrical appliances, vehicle technology and medical technology. However, the demands on functionality, safety, comfort and energy efficiency still play a greater role in product design as factors such as sustainability and usability. For example, if a car still holds more than 70% of steel in the 1980s, a vehicle nowadays includes a larger proportion of a variety of difficultly separable plastics and composite materials, as well as complex metal composites. This relates in particular to composites made from such different materials as metals and plastics. The processing and recovery of the components of those complex material mixtures is difficult for recycling companies."

"The Cordilleran region of western Canada includes most of British Columbia and the Yukon and pares of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The western part of this region was for about 50 years the principal mineral producing area of the Dominion. It lost this distinction in 1907 when production from the mines of the Canadian Shield took the lead, but it continues to provide about 15 percent of the total Canadian production. In 1945 the total mineral production of British Columbia and the Yukon was valued at $65,302,900, of which about 80 percent was derived from metals.This paper is intended to serve as an introduction co the more derailed Cordilleran papers. Part I includes a brief synopsis of the complex geology and diverse types of mineralization in the region and Parr II collates the main structural principles exemplified in the derailed papers, and draws some conclusions regarding the application of this information to prospecting."

A running facebreak ahead of the powered support units occurred on the number 4 seam at Matla Coal’s number 3 shaft (Matla 3) in April and May 2002.Very difficult mining conditions were experienced for a distance of some 150 m in the tailgate and to a lesser extent on the face itself. The paper analyses the main causes for the high stress conditions leading to the facebreak, namely, the existence of a >20 m dolerite sill close to surface and the effect of stopping longwalling on the overlying 5 seam. Difficulties experienced during the facebreak are discussed, including, pillar and roof collapses in the tailgate, high stress areas ahead of the face causing roof and sidewall stability problems, flushing of broken rock into the face area at the tailgate, secondary mid-face breaks, and the availability of critical support units. Successful rock engineering interventions and learning points were that, a goaf angle of 14.6° was found to be more realistic than the previously used 20 to 25° in predicting dolerite sill behaviour in this area, pre-split blasting of the sill significantly reduced stress on the face and tailgate allowing re-support work to proceed, varying pillar support types were analysed and rated, the need to always have a ground control “First Aid” kit available was recognised and a strategy for subsequent panels beneath the sill was developed. Numerous support units were used and the performance of the more suitable types is briefly discussed. L’étude présente analyse les raison majeures pour les conditions de grandes contraintes qui ont conduit à la cassure de taille, à savoir l’existence d’un mur de dolérite de >20m proche de la surface et l’effet d’arrêter la longue taille sur la veine 5 superposée. Les difficultés rencontrées pendant la cassure de taille sont rapportées, y compris les effondrements de piliers et toit dans la voie de tête, les aires de grandes contraintes en avant du front de taille causant des problèmes de stabilité pour le toit et les parois latérales, l’injection de roches cassées dans la taille en voie de tête, les cassures secondaires à mi-taille, et la disponibilité d’unités de soutènement critiques. The robustness of the large-sections correction procedure, Hill's fast approximation, Barbery's correction and the PARGEN correction was examined by comparing their ability to reconstruct the true liberation distribution using sectioning data from computer-generated spheres. The results indicate that the flexibility of a correction procedure is related to the assumptions it makes about the continuity of the liberation distribution, locked-particle characteristics and ore texture. Overall, the large-sections procedure appeared to be the most generally applicable. The Hill fast approximation performed well, but this was probably because it partially incorporates the sphere model; the performance of the PARGEN and Barbery corrections varied from case to case.

"Self-similarity is proofed to be a common feature when brittle material is comminuted, either in particle bed or single particle mode. Appropriate test work is well documented for particle sizes less than 7 mm in several publications. In contrast, almost no research has been done for coarser particles. The aim of this paper is to show that the fracture pattern of coarser material also tends to be self-similar. Hence, single particles of quartzite, granodiorite and dolomite were comminuted under compressive load. The focus was set on three different size fractions -3.15 +2.5 mm, -31.5 +25 mm and lumps -300 mm. According to the wide range of particle sizes, three different piston-die presses were used with a maximum compressive force ranging from 5 kN to 4000 kN. The force-displacement curves were recorded in order to calculate the specific comminution energy. Additionally, the -31.5 +25 mm size fraction was crushed in a laboratory scale jaw crusher and a roll crusher. Some authors report that the energy-size-reduction relationship of self-similar materials can be approximated by a linear function, which is independent of the comminution equipment. In their charts the slope can be seen as a product-size-independent grindability measure. Our tests show a self-similar breakage behavior when particles in a range of -300 +3 mm are comminuted in single particle mode. Furthermore, the products of the piston-die-presses and the roll crusher are similar to each other in a self-similar representation of the particle size distribution. The jaw crusher product, however, is not self-similar compared to the piston-die-press products. Finally, the linear energy-size-reduction relationships are confirmed for each fraction, but show size dependent slopes."

Multiple agencies in Southern California are retrofitting and upgrading their levees to catch up with ever-advancing urbanization affecting the requirements for existing channels and levees in this seismically active zone. Pressed-in sheet piles have been specified on some of these projects to minimize noise and vibration problems associated with sheet pile installation. This paper will study three Southern California levee and sewer pipeline retrofit projects that utilized pressed-in sheet piles in hard soil conditions with N-values higher than 50. BACKGROUND Southern California is home to numerous drainage channels fortified with earthen levees. In spite of the region’s semi-arid climate with varying annual precipitation from year to year, winter storms can bring in heavy and continuous rainfall to the area which overwhelms the levees’ capacities at times. Some levees are running through densely populated areas with homes and other sensitive structures such as underground utilities and bridge piers. Conventional sheet pile driving utilizes either percussive or vibratory pile driving methods, both of which generate high levels of noise and vibration, causing nuisance and potential damage to nearby structures. On the other hand, the press-in piling method utilizes a hydraulic force to push piles into the ground, thus practically eliminating the noise and vibration issue. Although there are types of press-in piling systems mounted on tall leaders on large crawler-base machines, they are less frequently used due to its much larger size and more limited drivability than the type discussed hereunder. The other type of press-in machine sits on top of already installed piles and is anchored with its own weight and additional counter weight when starting off as shown in Figure 1. Once the first few piles are pressed in, the equipment grips on top of the installed piles and moves forward on its own as the pile installation progresses. See Figure 2. This method does not use a vibratory or percussive force to install piles.

A1though the expanding Eltran1 configuration has been used in induced polarization exploration for several years, there has been little application of this method to straight resistivity problems. A comparison of results of resistivity exploration by this technique versus those obtained from Wenner configuration surveys reveals a number of advantages in interpretative resolution as well as in field operation. The application of electrical resistivity to ground-water exploration is well known.= In the past a major portion of this work has been accomplished by use of one or more variations of a technique employing the Wenner3 electrode configuration. With the introduction of the frequency domain technique of induced polarization measurements, used primarily in the exploration for disseminated sulfide deposits, there arose the need for an electrode configuration by which potentials could be measured externally to the current electrode spread in order to minimize coupling between current sending and potential receiving circuits. It was also deemed desirable that the configuration would provide information laterally along profile as well as with depth. To reach these objectives the expanding dipole-dipole configuration (which probably first was used in the electrical transient method of exploration and from which the name 'Eltran' was derived) has been adapted to induced polarization exploration. A users friendly PC Computer Program has been developed to implement a systematic design of the powered support. The required input data are: (1) thickness, RQD, and compressive strength of the immediate roof; (2) mining height; and (3) type, thickness, and tensile strength of the main roof. Several important parameters for support selection under a given geological condition are generated through the implementation of the program, including type of support most favorable for the geologic condition, minimum inclination angle of the legs with respect to the horizontal axis, suitable setting load ratio of the front to rear leg for the 4-leg supports, optimum setting load, and support capacity.

Nos últimos anos, a indústria automotiva tem evoluído de forma significativa em relação à preservação ambiental e com respeito à segurança veicular. A Usiminas, alinhada a esses avanços, tem realizado estudos visando obter novos produtos de alta resistência mecânica que possibilitem a redução do peso dos veículos e diminuição do consumo de combustível, além do aumento da segurança. Para novos projetos de veículos, como fator de melhoria do desempenho dos materiais de alta resistência, têm assumido destaque especial nos aços Dual Phase, principalmente naqueles do grau 1000MPa, as características de expansão de furo, em função da correlação com a vida em fadiga e o comportamento à fratura. Esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar uma das etapas do ciclo de desenvolvimento de um aço Dual Phase do grau 1000MPa com características de expansão de furo maior que 20%. O trabalho avaliou três conceitos diferentes de liga submetidos a tratamentos térmicos específicos. Os resultados obtidos permitiram retroalimentar o ciclo posterior do desenvolvimento, no qual resultados positivos foram alcançados.

O nível de inclusões presentes no aço líquido interfere diretamente na qualidade das placas produzidas por lingotamento contínuo e são determinantes na formação de defeitos superficiais em produtos laminados a frio. A reoxidação do aço, bem como a passagem de escória do distribuidor para o molde, a interação do aço com o pó de cobertura do distribuidor e com o pó fluxante, têm forte influência na limpidez das placas originadas no processo de solidificação no molde. No presente trabalho, avaliaram-se as inclusões formadas durante o início do processo de lingotamento contínuo para aços de ultra baixo teor de carbono, sob três diferentes condições de adição do pó de cobertura do distribuidor, além da própria condição padrão. O objetivo do estudo é reduzir a quantidade das inclusões e consequentemente, os defeitos superficiais em placas iniciais, por meio da relação com o teor de oxigênio no veio da máquina de lingotamento contínuo. Tal investigação visou fornecer informações para alterações nas condições do processo para melhoria da qualidade do produto final.

This report describes the results of a study to determine which types of, and to what extent, mining wastes can contaminate groundwater through leaching of acid-forming or potentially toxic constituents. The primary focus of this study was on coal mining wastes, especially overburden spoils and preparation plant refuse. In addition, the potential for contamination by leachates from clean coal stockpiles was also examined. The study approach included investigation of (a) the amounts and geographic locations of mining wastes in the United States; (b) the chemical character of mining wastes, especially with regard to potentially acid-firming or toxic constituents; and (c) the extent to which acid and/or toxic components are leached from mining wastes by rainwater. To evaluate the leachability of coal wastes, a laboratory waste leaching method was developed during this study to specifically simulate the leaching process over a long-term. Waste samples collected during this study were also leached by the EPA extraction procedure and ASTM waste leaching method. Results of the three leach test methods were compared to evaluate their relative capabilities to predict the leachability of mining wastes.

The Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investigation of the feldspar resources of the New England and North Appalachian States with a view to greater efficiency and economy in their utilization. Such an investigation was deemed necessary, not only because of the continued and increasing consumption of these minerals, but especially because of the demand for better technical control of the raw materials that are used by the white-ware industries of the United States. Most manufacturers of white pottery wares have only a limited knowledge of the origin, mode of occurrence, and methods of mining and preparation of the materials that they use. Heretofore, owing to a belief that the supply of raw material was unlimited, the manufacturer had concerned himself chiefly with the solution of the problems of manufacture. Within the past few years, however, it has been found that difficulties arise in manufacture which can be traced beyond the manufacturing process and are believed to be due to a need of better control of the materials used. Furthermore, as competition becomes more severe, more attention must be paid to selection of materials in order to minimize consumption and also to avoid unnecessary expense for transportation of material. Doubtless the lack of interest as regards these details has arisen from the fact that in the past a considerable proportion of the whiteware ingredients has been imported and the manufacturer has been forced to rely on the samples submitted and the general uniformity of the source of supply to insure against variation of the material. An extra precaution arising from this lack of definite knowledge still prevails in the common practice of never depending on one source of supply for anyone ingredient. Often the products of three or more producers are blended so that if anyone shall vary without warning the variation arising from its use will not be sufficient to ruin the ware.

The stress of a coal seam is an important factor that affects the permeability of the coal seam and then affects the coalbed methane (CBM) drainage. In China, adjacent coal seam mining is an important method to reduce stress, which increases the permeability of the coal seam. However, in the process of mining adjacent coal seams, many coal pillars remain, which causes stress concentrations and results in a decrease in permeability. Therefore, it is important to study the influence of coal pillars on the stress of adjacent layers and its distribution and evolution in the floor rock. This paper took the Shendong Baode Coal Mine as a case study and investigated the influence of the coal pillar on the stress and permeability of coal seam #11. The results show that under a coal pillar, the relationship between the vertical stress of different floor depths and the width of the coal pillar can be divided into a negative correlation zone, transition zone, and positive correlation zone. The change in the coal pillar width does not affect the pressure relief range or the degree of pressure relief in the adjacent coal seams below the goaf. The field measurements show that after the mining of panel #81,505, the permeability coefficient of coal seam #11 under the goaf increased from 0.1434 to 26.3545 m2/( MPa2*d), increasing 182.7 times, and the drainage mixing volume of boreholes #1 and #2 increased from 1.24 to 1.52 m3/ min. While the permeability coefficient of coal seam #11 from 12.5 m in the coal pillar has only increased by 2.6 times, the drainage volume of boreholes #3 and #4 did not change significantly.

This report describes the feasibility test of an electromagnetic method for locating boreholes, with or without casing, that have been drilled in conjunction with mining operations but whose location with respect to the tunnel is not precisely known. The first tests were conducted with the cooperation of the Kerr-McGee Corporation, Church Rock Mining Operations, New Mexico, in September 1977. These tests demonstrated that accuracies of better than ±5% of range and ±1° of bearing can be achieved with a simple system and setups. Subsequent tests, in January 1978, on a horizontally drilled pipe line river crossing application, by Titan Contractors of Sacramento, California, demonstrated that accuracies of better than one-half percent of range and a few tenths of one degree of bearing can be achieved by using refined techniques. The demonstration tests were done at ranges on the order of 100 to 200 feet but the method is capable of working at much greater distances.

Neste trabalho é estudado o efeito do ferro no tamanho de grão e nas propriedades mecânicas do latão UNS C26000, também comercialmente conhecido como latão 70/30. Foram avaliados dois teores residuais: 0,0069% e 0,0592%. As amostras foram inicialmente laminadas até a espessura de 2,30 mm, submetidas a tratamento térmico de recozimento objetivando tamanho de grão de 0,030 mm. Posteriormente as amostras foram laminadas para outras três espessuras e submetidas a um novo recozimento. As amostras recozidas passaram por análise de tamanho de grão e foram submetidas a ensaios de tração, sendo obtidos resultados de limite de resistência à tração. Os comportamentos apresentados pelos materiais foram distintos entre si, sendo que o material com maior teor de ferro apresentou aumento das propriedades mecânicas em função do aumento da redução de espessura e o material com menor teor ferro apresentou redução do limite de resistência à tração. Quanto ao tamanho de grão, o material com menor teor de ferro apresentou pequena variação de tamanho de grão após o recozimento, enquanto o material com maior teor de ferro apresentou redução do tamanho de grão em função do aumento da redução de espessura, demonstrando inibição do crescimento de grão e estrutura heterogênea.

Catalisador monolítico comercial de níquel foi selecionado com o objetivo de se determinar o regime cinético da reação de oxidação parcial do metano (OPM). As estruturas cristalinas deste catalisador foram identificadas por DRX. A composição química superficial e o estado químico dos elementos presentes na superfície da amostra foram determinados por EDX. A técnica de microscopia (MEV) com emissão de campo foi utilizada neste trabalho com as finalidades de análise morfológica do catalisador antes de sua utilização nas reações de oxidação parcial. Análises de TG-DTA foram realizadas com o objetivo de se estudar o comportamento térmico do catalisador. A área superficial e a área metálica foram determinadas por BET e Quimissorção, respectivamente. A temperatura de redução do catalisador foi determinada através de TPR. Foi utilizada uma unidade experimental para realização de testes catalíticos. Antes das reações, os catalisadores pulverizados na faixa granulométrica < 0,150 mm foram submetidos a uma etapa de redução para ativar os sítios de níquel metálico. As análises dos produtos de saída do reator e das cargas reagentes foram realizadas por cromatografia gasosa, utilizando-se um Cromatógrafo VARIAN CP3800. Foi determinado o regime cinético na OPM utilizando as massas de catalisador 65, 80 e 95 mg.

"A study has been done of the scale-up of laboratory bench-scale flotation to continuous plant circuit performance. It was found that the impellor speed and the air flow rate influenced the results and in this case extreme values of these operating variables were required in order to reproduce the plant rougher results in the laboratory. Despite the experimental uncertainty introduced by these extreme values, it was demonstrated that the plant performance could be predicted and experimentally reproduced with bench-scale tests.IntroductionThe mineral processing industry relies heavily on batch flotation testwork to design flowsheets, evaluate reagent s and compare various types of ore. The batch tests are generally regarded as being directly comparable within themselves, but quite often they relate poorly or not at all to continuous circuits. Obviously this dilemma generates considerable uncertainty with wide-ranging ramifications. One of the manifestations of this unfortunate situation is the commonly expressed opinion that ""it may work that way in the laboratory, but it will never work that way in the plant"".In a previous publication, a method was described whereby the results of batch bench-scale tests could be used to simulate a locked cycle flotation test series. The work to be described here is a continuation of that investigation with an extension to the simulation of an actual plant circuit. It would have been preferable to progress from laboratory batch data to a continuous pilot plant and then finally to a full-scale plant operation. However, because that possibility did not present itself, an attempt will be made to show that the performance of an existing plant circuit can be successfully simulated from batch data. The success of the procedure can be judged by the agreement among the plant results, a locked cycle test and the predicted results based on batch tests."
