Thirty-seven blasts have been monitored using either three or four seismographs, at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Statistical analysis of the data shows that square-root, cube-root, and site-specific scaling methods predict peak particle velocities with about the same (low) degree of reliability. Some mines have peak particle velocities that are significantly lower or higher than the U.S. Bureau of Mines averages (Siskind et al., 1980). This suggests that the option provided by the proposed regulations (Office of Surface Mining, 1983), to adjust blast designs based on site-specific measurements could be highly beneficial both to operators and to the public. The frequency spectra reveal that the predominant frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz but several blasts had a significant amount of energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases the vibration energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to the delay intervals.

In 1995, mining engineer Alain Gachet thought about using Earth-observation satellite imagery to search for precious minerals. The latest radar Earth-observation satellite, Canada’s RADARSAT-1, had just been successfully launched at the time, creating new opportunities for commercial applications. Gachet was working in Congo Brazzaville as an oil executive and general secretary of Elf Congo for the French national oil company Elf Aquitaine. He understood that the RADARSAT-1 launch promised new and cost-effective sources of data for mineral and oil exploration. “It was early 1996 before I ordered my firstRADARSAT-1 satellite images,” said Gachet. “I was first struck by the quantity of information delivered by the radar images. Linear structures and faults were clearly defined and subtle topographic features were tremendously enhanced,” he said. “It was ‘tree top geology,’ but this kind of information appeared to be key for finding new gold seams.”

"The El Indio mine treats a complex mixture of copper and gold/silver ores at its plant located in the high Andes in Chile. The plant utilizes conventional crushing, grinding and flotation to produce a copper/gold/silver concentrate. Due to high levels of arsenic and antimony, the flotation concentrate must be roasted prior to custom smelting. The flotation tailings is leached and additional gold recovered from a CIP circuit. Present and future metallurgical developments are discussed in this paper. INTRODUCTIONIn late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65 % of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose.El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena.The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9.5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude AS2O3 . A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit.Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5. 30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper."

Large scale open pit mining and quarrying operations dictate safe and reliable pit wall stability. The current approach of employing the particle velocity-scaled charge distance approach to estimate and minimize damage to residential structures is considered inadequate to protect rock slopes. This study utilizes close-in blasting vibration data as input to an advanced 2D numerical code to study its applicability to serve as a predictive tool in terms of blast-induced rock slope failure. Two tri-axial accelerometer stations, consisting of high-frequency and high-amplitude (20 kHz, 100g) sensors, located within ~100m of the blast, but at two different bench levels, were used to monitor production blasts in a limestone quarry. The production blast consisted of double-decked explosive loads in 125 mm (5 in) diameter holes, with an inter-deck delay of 42 ms, and each deck consisting of 130 kg (285 lb) of emulsion explosive. The blasting vibration data obtained at the two bench levels were critically analyzed, and the vibration results served as input to the numerical model consisting of a single rock block with a 45 degree persistent joint plane but with specified strength properties, significantly different from that of the intact rock. The model was able to characterise progressive accumulation of damage in the form of microcracks along the joint surface as a function of the relatively low vibration load from successive explosive decks. The results showed that such a numerical model can serve as a very good diagnostic and predictive tool, when backed up by careful vibration monitoring and further supported by detailed slope monitoring.

It is easy to demonstrate the importance of aggregates in any conversation about infrastructure and other engineering artefacts. Peoples around the world have made use of stone to enrich and enhance their lives since the earliest days of civilisation. In New Zealand, Maori used hard durable rocks for weapons, tools, and basic structures. European settlement accelerated the use of quarried materials and formed the basis for development of our society as we see it today. Logic might suggest that the quarrying sector would be recognised positively for, and encouraged to continue to contribute to, this underpinning of the way we are. The reality is æNot In Most Back YardsÆ. Why? The rock is where it's always been (often overlooked) and our æsocialÆ environment is today's hard place. For a resource-based business in New Zealand, that environment is principally the Resource Management Act, with the widespread power it has distributed to anyone prepared to invest their time. This coupled with a lack of leadership and direction in the implementation of the Act has created a climate that stifles development and diverts energy and resources to æplaying the gameÆ rather than ælifting the gameÆ. Perhaps the real costs of this are not yet widely recognised. The paper will draw mainly on the experience of endeavouring to consent a ægreenfieldÆ quarry in the Waikato region. This is supported by commentary based on nearly 10 years of ælivingÆ with the RMA at sites across much of New Zealand. RMA Scorecard Summary: Effects based? Rarely. Level playing field? No. Maori Consultation? Could do better. Efficient use of resources? No. Timely? No. Is it working for other sectors? Certainly not the quarrying industry's customers and end users.

Approximately 420 VertiMills« (VTM) have been installed in mineral processing plants throughout the world, mainly in tertiary and regrind applications plus several in secondary grinding duties. Metso Minerals (Metso) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) have commenced a collaborative research program in stirred milling technology focusing on mill performance evaluation, model development and scale-up methodology. Industrial VTMs are being assessed using a consistent circuit survey protocol to evaluate the performance of VTMs in comminution circuits. The survey protocol includes identification and modification of sampling points, appropriate sampling techniques, controlled circuit stability, and best sample analysis practice. To initiate this study four surveys were conducted in the tertiary grind circuit in the Ridgeway Concentrator at Cadia Valley Operations (CVO) that treats the full circuit throughput of over 800 tph. To deal with the high feed rate the site opted to lead the world in the application of stirred mills by installing the largest VTM, at 3000 hp (2240kW) in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone bank. On average the operating work index was 13.1 kWh/t, reducing the secondary grind product by 40 - 50 ¦m to the required 80 to 100 ¦m range. The applied specific energy is relatively low in these low-intensity stirred media mills at 2.7 kWh/t. The size specific energy was 24.2 kWh/t-75¦m. "Mineralogical techniques including microscopic methods, reflected and transmitted light microscopy, Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), are useful in determining the quality of industrial minerals. They are essential for studying ores and metallurgical products including the evaluation of physical characteristics of the mineral, paragenetic relationships, associations with possible deleterious contaminants (e.g., sulphides), spatial distribution within the ore zones and liberation characteristics. The methods are inexpensive, and provide quick identification and distinction among the industrial minerals and the gangue minerals in a section. Additionally, SEM is necessary to reveal complex textural sequences and 3-D measurements of minerals and quick semi-quantitative analysis.Common analytical methods include Electron Microprobe Analyses (EMPA) and Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) (commonly with XRF and ICP) for major and trace elements. The EMPA analyses of industrial minerals provide information on the purity of the analyzed grains as opposed to the bulk chemical analyses that may be misleading due to contamination by other associated common “gangue” minerals. These techniques have been implemented for the case studies of wollastonite, V-magnetite and muscovite. Therefore, these methods can provide extremely useful information and lead to the implementation of a successful pilot-testing programme.MINERALOGICAL EVALUATION OF DEPOSITSDespite their considerable and increasing economic importance, industrial mineral deposits have traditionally been neglected by economic geologists, and are only rarely the subject of the detailed analysis widely lavished on metallic mineralization. Moreover, in that they generally represent concentrations of “normal” rock-forming minerals, albeit commonly with particular textural and/or geochemical features, they have tended to fall between the mainstream of petrogenetic studies and mineral deposit research (Grammatikopoulos 1999). For many industrial minerals, little attention has been paid to the factors responsible for their local concentration as large and high-grade bodies. This comparative neglect has particularly been the case for minerals such as talc and wollastonite, widespread in metamorphic rocks, in which they are reasonably interpreted as components of assemblages derived, respectively, from pelitic sediments, ultramafic igneous rocks and siliceous limestones."

Coal, as energy resource, possesses numerous characteristics and properties which all have an influence on its gasification behaviour. The two properties considered as critically important when evaluating a coal source for gasification is its mineral content and slagging behaviour. Research has indicated that slagging formation can be inhibited or even prevented by the addition of a fluxing agent. It is thus of great importance to understand the mineral interaction during gasification in order to select a suitable fluxing agent for the prevention of slagging and clinker formation in the gasifier. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effect of iron as a fluxing agent and study the transformation of the mineral and added iron during gasification. A pre-determined amount of pure elemental iron (between 2wt% and 20wt%) was added to a base case coal sample in order to study the effect of the addition of iron to the coal. The transformation of the iron in conjunction with the possible iron containing minerals present in the coal was studied by means of Mössbauer analyses. Typical characterisation techniques included proximate analyses, ultimate analyses and ash composition analyses. The ash fusion temperature analyses (AFT) were used to study and predict the slagging behaviour of the iron-spiked coal samples. Even though AFT analyses only provide an average flow property, it gives a good indication of the changes that the iron addition induces on coal properties. FactSage modelling was carried out in conjunction with the Mössbauer and AFT analyses. From the proximate, ultimate and ash composition analyses it was clear that the coal used con-formed to the average characteristics measured over an extended time period. From the AFT values it was seen that an increase in the flow temperature occurred with the addition of pure elemental iron to the coal, which can be of importance for operational purposes as to raise the gasifier temperature and not to have slagging problems to occur in the gasifier. The Mössbauer data show that he-matite is the main Fe-component that forms from the pyrite originally present and from the added iron to the coal, consistent with FactSage modelling, which shows that the partial oxygen pressure determines which mineral species will form. This study opens up new possibilities when considering operational problems experienced in in-dustrial gasifiers. Successful completion of this study and a study to look at reducing conditions in the gasifier will also add to the knowledge that already exists regarding fluxing agents.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), despite their small size, are stable and have a large surface area that allows for absorption and removal of ions as well as turbidity in a short period of time. Thus, the present study addressed the synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4 NPs synthesized using the co-precipitation method and evaluated their effect on the coagulation process in water treatment. The Fe3O4 NPs characteristics were evaluated as follows: magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), surface area using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), crystal phase using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and morphology using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). In addition, the effects of the synthetic Fe3O4 NPs on the turbidity reduction of water in various pH levels were evaluated. The synthesized Fe3O4 NPs were without any impurity in the sizes of 22–32 nm, surface area of 99.6 m2/g, pores’ mean diameter size of approximately 10.6 nm, and maximum magnetic saturation of 66.21 emu/gram (emu/g). Using 0.2 g of synthetic Fe3O4 NPs with an initial turbidity of 17 NTU and pH of 6 could reduce all water turbidity (100%). Considering the cheap and facile production and separation, as well as the possibility to reuse them and reduce the sludge water content, iron oxide Fe3O4 NPs can be effectively used for turbidity reduction in the water treatment process.

"INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the ALSANDS PROJECT, with emphasis on the approach taken in the design of the Primary Extraction and Froth Treatment Plants.The Alsands Consortium (Table 1) is a Joint Venture of 9 companies formed in 1978, with its prime objective to obtain governmental approval and concomitant suitable commercial terms to build and operate a third oil sands mining and upgrading facility in the Athabasca Oil Sands Deposit.Alsands Energy Limited is the Consortium Manager.The Alsands Project will provide about 10 percent of Canada's forecast crude oil production by 1990, which will be 20,700 cubic metres per day (130,000 barrels/day) of synthetic crude oil plus 1,100 cubic metres per day (7,000 barrels/day) of liquid petroleum gases. To construct Alsands the time required by construction labour, field non-manual and engineering support personnel as well as those trades involved in project-related urban development will total approximately 100,000,000 manhours or 50,000 man years. During regular operations, 4,800 people will be employed by Alsands.Approximately $13 billion will be spent to design, construct and start up the plant by the scheduled 1988 completion date."

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion and, in several cases, breaches between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced breaches indicates that impacts to the river system are complex and vary significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as both positive and negative. Several floodplain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow have reverted to active riverbed. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers see the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries – Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is performing additional studies of the impacts to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound floodplain decisions regarding mining.

O novo ambiente de competitividade, ocasionado pela globalização, impõe que as empresas tenham um compromisso ainda maior com a redução dos seus custos. As ineficiências não podem mais ser repassadas aos clientes. Na mineração um dos custos expressivos existentes refere-se aos pneus utilizados pelos equipamentos móveis. Baseado na representatividade dos custos dos pneus faz se necessário à aplicação de técnicas de mantenabilidade com a finalidade de aumentar a vida útil destes ativos, realizando as manutenções e monitoramentos necessários para maximização da sua performance, uma vez que o desempenho dos pneus existentes na mineração em estudo estavam menor do que o esperado. Partindo deste objetivo foi formado uma equipe de projeto com a finalidade de estudar os principais modos de falha dos pneus, podendo assim propor ações de melhorias no intuito de otimizar sua performance. Após a implantação destas ações observou-se uma melhora significativa nos indicadores de gestão dos pneus, levando a conclusão dos impactos positivos que o projeto trouxe a mineração.

In September 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Ivan caused the Pigeon River in western North Carolina to flood. This flooding eroded the embankment below Interstate 40 (I-40) and sent one of the eastbound lanes, along with the roadway shoulder, into the river below the embankment. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) needed to reopen all the lanes of I-40 as soon as possible and considered this damage to be an emergency situation. NCDOT contracted Schnabel Foundation Company to design and build a repair that would keep this important interstate open and reestablish the eastbound lane. The obstacles included limited work room, the requirement of keeping the remaining lanes of I-40 in service, and producing a final product that would be relatively maintenance free and last at least 100 years. The proposed repair had to consider that the existing interstate was founded on a rock fill that was constructed from rock blasted off the adjacent mountain side. The selected design included two, tied-back micropile walls to address these obstacles and other issues. Each of the walls were constructed of 10.75 inch diameter micropiles and corrosion-protected tieback anchors installed through the existing rock fill into competent bedrock, concrete wales, and a reinforced shotcrete facing. This successful project was completed during the coldest months of the year and within the timeframe established by the State of North Carolina. This paper will discuss the design and construction of the repair and the many challenges that had to be overcome.

The commercial development of the shallow (2200 ft2 400 ft) Windalia sand reservoir at Barrow Island provided the opportunity to conduct an intensive drilling programme using equipment and techniques designed for optimum performance.During the initial exploratory and reservoir delineation phase, 12 specific Windalia test wells were drilled using drilling equipment with an optimum depth range of 6QOO ft - 8000 ft and a 9 5/8 in by 7 in. casing programme was employed. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release exclusive of coring for five representative wells was 187 hr during this phase.Development drilling commenced December 1966 with one rig, with the second in operation January 1967.As of January 1 1968, 168 development wells had been completed. The two rigs employed are drive-in units equipped with a telescoping .gelf raising doubles mast.Optimum depth range with 4 1/2 in. drill pipe is 2500-4000 ft. Casing programme is 8 5/8 in. by 5 1/2 in. Efficient performance was achieved immediately. The average time from commencement of move-in to rig release for 15 wells drilled early in the development programme was 99 hr.By application of experience and further modification of techniques, performance was improved to an average time of 72 hr per well for 15 wells recently completed.The major drilling problem on Barrow Island is surface hole drilling due to the very hard surface limestone combined with complete loss of circulation at sea level.In this operation, significant improvements have been effected. During the exploratory phase drilling, 12 1/4 in hole to set 9 5/8 in. casing, average penetration rate was 23 ft/hr. At the commencement of the development programme penetration rate, drilling 10 5/8 in. hole to set 8 5/8 in. casing, was 28 ft/hr for the 15 early wells considered, improving to 55 ft/hr for the 15 recent wells considered.This programme is a team effort and much credit must be given to the enthusiastic co-operation of the two drilling contractors.The current field record is 2 days 4 hr with a 4 1/2 hr move including the drilling of mousehole and rathole.

A metodologia aplicada para alcançar os resultados almejados baseou-se em experimentos realizados com informações de bobinas reais, sendo utilizados softwares distintos para o desenvolvimento do projeto, validando os resultados obtidos através de análises de desempenho, com a correlação entre respostas conhecidas e as obtidas com a utilização da rede neural, assim como, a análise do erro médio quadrático das respostas obtidas com a aplicação, sendo simulados na etapa de treinamento da rede neural ou verificados experimentalmente com a execução da ferramenta desenvolvida.

One of the utmost severe mining catastrophes in underground hard rock mines is rock burst phenomena. It can lead to damage to mine openings and equipment as well as trigger accidents or even threat to life as well. Due to this, a number of researchers are forced to study some easy-to-use alternative methods to predict the rock burst occurrence. Nevertheless, due to the extremely multifaceted relation between mechanical, geological and geometric factors of the mines, the conventional prediction methods are not able to produce accurate results. With the expansion of machine learning methods, a revolution in the rock burst occurrence has become imaginable. In present study, three machine learning methods, namely XGBoost, decision tree and support vector machine, are utilized to predict the occurrence of rock burst in various underground projects. A total of 134 rock burst events were gathered together from various published literatures comprising maximum tangential stress (MTS), elastic energy index (EEI), uniaxial compressive strength and uniaxial tensile stress (UTS) that have been used to develop various machine learning models. The performance of machine learning methods is evaluated based on the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the rock burst prediction.

"Difficulties with the sizing and operation of centrifugal froth pumps are common and the underlying fluid dynamics are complex. Design and selection often relies on previous experience, offering unreliable guidance for novel applications or unexpected problems. The current paper describes a program of extensive laboratory testing on froth handling centrifugal pumps, covering a range of flows, heads, speeds, viscosity, air content and froth stability. Variations in impeller vane design and the effectiveness of an airlock venting apparatus were also examined. The program resulted in a better understanding of centrifugal froth pump dynamics and insight for the troubleshooting of field applications.INTRODUCTION The Challenge of Pumping Froth In pumping mineral processing froth, the handling of large quantities of air within the fluid is often unavoidable. Efforts to reduce the amount of air present at the pump suction, while always recommended for improving pump performance, may have limitations. Some strategies may also carry an economic penalty, such as unwanted process dilution (e.g. due to water spray or injection), or increased capital cost of equipment due to oversized pumps, sumps and/or piping. Froth pumping losses fall into several categories, as described below and represented graphically in Figure 1. • Density effects: Entrained air reduces the pressure created by the centrifugal pump in direct proportion to the reduction in bulk density. This is not a true “loss”, since the head produced by the pump (in meters of froth), may remain unaffected. However, the reduction in pressure often leads to a corresponding increase in pump speed required to drive the system, which itself leads to increased NPSH required by the pump (NPSHR). Furthermore, by adding a gas phase, the overall volumetric flowrate is increased, assuming a fixed quantity of de-aerated liquid being handled. This leads to increased suction velocity which further reduces the NPSH margin by simultaneously increasing pump NPSHR and decreasing system NPSH available at the pump suction (NPSHA). • Viscosity effects: Increased viscosity introduces an additional factor in some froth pumping applications, such as oil sands bitumen froth. Losses result from increased shear stress within the fluid flow, which increase with flowrate. Viscosity also facilitates the formation of airlock by reducing turbulence and allowing individual bubbles to coalesce more easily within the flow stream.
