IN 1947 the steel industry rebounded from its wartime effort and produced a record-breaking peacetime tonnage of steel ingots. During the first six months of the year the industry produced 42,000,000 tons of ingots and expected to produce 85,000,000 tons for the year. With a rated capacity of some 91,000,000 tons, production was at a rate of about 93 per cent of capacity. Credit must be extended to the steel producers who have maintained this steady state of operations while faced with many problems, not the least of which was a continued shortage of satisfactory scrap. Furthermore, the steel industry started a record-breaking peacetime expansion program at a total cost of more than $1,000,000,000. This program will increase the ingot-making capacity of the country by 2,500,000 tons and should be completed in 1948.

This paper describing t o concentrating practice of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci Branch, at Morenci, Ariz., is one of a series of articles on concentrating methods and posts being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Morenci concentrator, locally known as No. 6 concentrator, treats 5,000 dry tons of ore per 24-hour day by primary tabling followed by two stages of flotation treatment, at 48-mesh size and 65-mush size respectively.

O objetivo do trabalho foi reduzir a instabilidade do processo de produção da barra chata série de 1.1/2"x5/8" á 1.3/4"x1/4" no primeiro trem contínuo da linha leve de produção de barras e perfis. Esta instabilidade ocorria principalmente pela utilização de um passe quadrado onde requeria maior acompanhamento operacional e resultava em passes posteriores de menores dimensões tendo dificuldade no controle de laço em um trecho de calha com Pinch Roll (rolo puxador) em função das baixas reduções. O estudo foi realizado com auxílio de um software de laminação seguindo a teoria do alargamento de Ekelund e coleta de amostras reais das barras laminadas para verificação dimensional. Com a alteração do processo substituindo o passe quadrado que é um passe gerador de defeitos e de difícil controle operacional por um passe de borda, conseguimos melhorar sua estabilidade tendo grandes impactos positivos na qualidade superficial do produto final através também do aumento das reduções posteriores. Também conseguimos aumentar a disponibilidade do laminador com a redução das interrupções e sucatas causadas pela instabilidade do processo e reduzimos o tempo de câmbio dentro da família desta barra chata.

The Tolukuma gold-silver prospect is located approximately 100km N of Port Moresby in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Epithermal "adularia-sericite" style mineralisation crops out over 1200m within an en echelon quartz veined zone 1 to lOm wide. At a 4g/t cut-off grade, a geological resource of approximately 1.47Mt @ 13.77g/t Au is indicated from 38 diamond drill holes completed since discovery by Newmont Pty Ltd in September 1986. At a regional scale, Tolukuma miner- alisation appears localised in a dilatant zone at the intersection of a 1150 magnetic structure, and the western margin of a N-S trending graben which is filled by a Pliocene volcanic complex contemporaneous with the Mt Davidson Volcanics 30km to the W. A l0km diameter circular Landsat feature, which may reflect magma emplacement at depth, occurs immediately N of Tolukuma and nearby mineralisation. Mineralisation at Tolukuma occurs in sub-vertical quartz veins at, or adjacent to the faulted contact between Pliocene basic and intermediate volcanics/intrusives, and quartz mica schists and phyllites of the Cretaceous Kagi Metamorphics. Most veins display evidence of multiple episodes of brecciation and textures indicative of cyclic boiling, including crustiform rhythmic banding and quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite.

Theoretically, the main driver behind a mining operations? sourcing decision should differ from company to company, and within a company from project to project, but in reality it often relates to cost. Research confirms that there are a number of factors, including cost, to consider when choosing between in-house and outsourced mining. While the literature is rife with factors to consider, little information exists on how to apply these in practice and the relative importance of the different factors to be considered. A study was conducted to determine whether mining is truly a core competency for a mid-tier commodity specialist mining company. Furthermore, a decision-making framework for mining operations sourcing was developed, and the critical success factors that should be adhered to if outsourced mining is chosen were determined. The research showed that owner mining is not a core competency for the mining company investigated. A decision-making framework was developed using the order winner/order qualifier structure, which can be used to facilitate the mining sourcing decision. The most important tools at the disposal of a mine owner?s team to manage a contractor miner are the social and output control mechanisms, according to the critical success factors study.

"The O'Jack Mining Co.'s zinc and lead deposits in Jasper County, Missouri, have been worked intermittently since the early nineties; production from these deposits was greatest during World War I and II - 4,668 tons of zinc and lead concentrates. The deposits are in a sink-hole structure in which intense deformation has taken place and in areas of disturbance in the sheet-ground horizon.While high-grade ore was being mined, the operators sank seven churn-drill holes for the purpose of extending reserves. They then asked the Bureau of Mines to explore the deposit with the object of developing a reserve of lower-grade ore that could be mined by open-pit methods. Twenty-two holes were sunk. The methods of drilling and sampling and the logs of the holes, as of those drilled by the operators, are given later in this report.INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mined has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "Ecstall Mining Limited was formed to operate the Kidd Creek mine, discovered by Texasgulf Incorporated in 1961 the orebody is geologically very complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead. The first phase of the operation involved an open pit, railroad and concentrator complex, which was under construction in 1965 and began operations in late 1966. The open pit, with rim dimensions of 2,000 by 1,000 feet, was computer-designed and highlights excellent wall control and efficient ore extraction and grade control. The railroad was built over the worst type of muskeg country, but it has been well maintained, resulting in an uninterrupted supply of ore in the trains. The 10,000-tpd concentrator, located 17 miles from the mine, is highly instrumented and automated. It features computer control of reagents and, in addition to the copper, zinc and lead flotation circuits, has a modern gravity tin plant. The concentrator is large, because very fine grinding is required for good metallurgy and nearly 2,500 tons per day of concentrates are produced. In 1969, work was started on the underground mine to take over from the open pit; it began partial production in mid-1973. The mine is highly instrumented, has a ramp from surface, a high-production shaft, an underground gyratory crusher and an efficient orehandling system, and employs the latest mining techniques. The electrolytic zine plant, rated at 120,000 tons of slab zinc per year, started operation in April, 1972, with batch leaching and purification circuits. It has been converted to continuous leaching and is now in the process of converting to continuous purification. Further modernization and automation will be carried out in the next few years. Five service departments support the five operating departments. These are maintenance, engineering and technical services, geology, administration and employee relations. How these ten departments function and work together using the most advanced technology to produce an efficient operation is the main theme of the Ecstall Story."

Many mining operations generate seismic signals. They come from blasting and from underground mine failures such as rockbursts, longwall first caves, coal bumps and pillar collapses. Traditionally, seismic motions have been of concern on a local scale because they could create damage to structures at the mine site or at neighboring locations. Recently, there has been much interest in the Comprehensive Nu-clear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). It prohibits any kind of nuclear explosion, anywhere. So distinguishing signals of mining operations from a possible nuclear explosion becomes important. An international monitoring system (IMS) is being implemented to verify the Treaty when it is ratified. It includes a large number of seismic stations capable of recording signals at regional (200 to 2,000 km or 124 to 1,240miles) and teleseismic (more than 2,000 km or 1,240 miles) distances.

The inverse velocity method has proven to be an effective approach for predicting slope failures in surface mines by analysing displacement monitoring data. However, the accuracy of inverse velocity method predictions is significantly affected by instrumental noise and natural environmental variations, which influence the identification of different deformation stages. To enhance predictive accuracy, this study applies and evaluates three filtering techniques to velocity time series data: Exponential smoothing filter, short-term smoothing filter, long-term smoothing filter and also compares it to raw data (no filtering). A refined prediction framework, that is, filtered inverse velocity method analyser, is proposed to improve slope failure forecasting in surface mining operations. The results demonstrate that filter selection plays a crucial role in optimising failure time predictions, offering valuable insights for geotechnical monitoring and early warning systems in surface mines.

Tonnage quantities of hafnium metal have been prepared in Kroll-process equipment designed for producing zirconium. Some slight process modifications have been necessary, but overall operation is the same as for zirconium. Hafnium oxide is chlorinated in the presence of carbon and the resultant hafnium tetrachloride reduced by magnesium metal. Byproduct magnesium chloride is removed in a high-vacuum distillation step and the hafnium sponge metal crushed for further use. Arc-melted metal can be forged and rolled to sheet, but the best material produced to date would not be considered cold ductile. INTRODUCTION This investigation is part of the program for the production of pure metals from domestic and foreign ores that has been underway at the Bureau of Mines for several years. It was done in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Bureau of Ships.

The White Pine Mine is situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan approximately 6 miles south of Lake Superior (Fig. 1). It is east of the Porcupine Mountains in Ontonagon County. The ore deposit is about 70 miles southwest of the famous native copper deposits of the "Copper Country" lying northeast of Houghton. Geological conditions are different at every mine and create a special set of problems in dilution control. This paper is largely intended to describe the techniques applied in mine dilution control (grade control) at White Pine, and present results of the program. For necessary background information major geologic characteristics of the deposit, particularly those that exert control over the distribution of ore, are briefly discussed. Mining methods are described in considerable detail since applied grade control techniques are adapted to these.

"Lake Shore Gold is engaged in commercial gold production at both the Timmins West and Bell Creek mines, located in Timmins, Ontario. Run of mine ore is processed at the Bell Creek mill which consists of a conventional gold mill flow sheet involving crushing, grinding, gravity concentration and carbon-in-leach (CIL) for gold recovery. Since 2009, the operating capacity of the mill has been upgraded from 2000 tpd tonnes per day (tpd) to over 3,000 tpd. The most recent expansion involved the installation of a low aspect ratio SAG mill to replace the secondary crusher. Without operational data on the low aspect mill, combined with a site team that was new to SAG milling, there were many challenges in achieving the target throughput from the circuit. Through the implementation of AwaRE advanced controllers, running in closed loop with PRC fragmentation cameras as well as embedded PARC modules within the Allen Bradley PLC, the site was able to rapidly develop a best operating practise and has been successful in creating a stable and consistent operational environment. Phase 1 of the expansion was completed at the end of 2012 and involved enhancements and capacity addition to the leaching and adsorption circuits, which increased the mill’s capacity to 2,500 tpd. Phase 2 of the expansion commenced at the end of July 2013 and involved the expansion of the crushing and grinding circuits. The expanded front-end of the mill now has a capacity of 5,500 tpd, and processes ore from both Bell Creek and Timmins West mines. The updated flow-sheet, as shown in Figure 1, illustrates the replacement of the two-stage crushing and ball milling circuit with a single stage crusher and a low aspect ratio SAG mill."

This paper refers to the new crushing and grinding process, which was invented by Professor Schönert (Ref.1), Clausthal, Germy (author of one of the papers presented at this meeting). The process is known as high pressure particle bed comminution or interparticle crushing. Several papers by Professor Schonert and his coworkers and by specialists of the companies producing the necessary equipment under license agreements already described fundamentals of the process, the equipment used, results of lab size and large scale tests and finally the first results of truly commercial operations (Ref .2 to 11). Therefore it should be sufficient to summarize the main facts here: - To a bed of bulk material a pressure of more than 50 MPa is applied. Comminution is achieved mainly by the pressure which one particle transfers to the other and not by squeezing single particles between the working surfaces of some crusher or grinding media.

The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC's. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

Zirconium has possible use in industry where severe corrosion conditions are encountered because it resists attack from a variety of corrosive environments. However, very little experimental testing has been done to evaluate the corrosion behavior of zirconium when simultaneously subjected to high tensile stresses and exposed to corrosive environments. This investigation was initiated for an evaluation test, but was limited to environments consisting of ferric chloride solutions which were known to attack zirconium and were shown to promote stress-corrosion cracking in preliminary tests. Tests for cracking susceptibility were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to show the effect of stress, solution concentration, air aeration of solution, and the method of mechanical processing. Tensile stress was applied to the specimens by a constant-load method which proved more reliable than a constant-strain method.

Limonite is a general term for a group of amorphous iron oxide and iron hydroxide materials. It is considered as one of the very refractory iron ore types due to its wide variation in chemical composition, iron content, moisture content and easily sliming in the course of comminution. Iron grade of test sample is 25.48%, the iron minerals are mainly limonite; and the gangue minerals consist of quartz and feldspar in majority, secondarily silicate minerals. In this test work, high intensity magnetic separation (HIMS)-cationic reverse flotation and magnetic roasting-low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) tests were conducted on limonite ore. The test results show that the concentrate with iron grade of 50.97% and recovery of 68.50% can be obtained by HIMS-cationic reverse flotation technique; while using magnetic roasting-LIMS technique, the better concentrate indexes of iron grade of 60.36% and recovery of 89.71% are achieved, and the iron grade of tailing is only 4.42%. Therefore, the magnetic roasting-LIMS technique is a better suitable method for beneficiation of low-grade limonite ore. This publication is a revision of the first of a series of four Miners' Circulars originally prepared and issued in 19'29 for use in a course of training designed to prepare mine officials to organize men for rescue and recovery operations. These circulars were revised in 1937 and 1938 and again in 1948. This circular (Miners' Circular 33) discusses mine gases and methods for detecting them. The second of this series (Miners' Circular 34) gives instruction in Bureau of Mines methods of sampling and analysis of mine gases; the third (Miners' Circular 35) describes methods and equipment used for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures used in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in recovery operations after mine fires or mine explosions.
