ONE DAY IN the mid-1880s, in a suburb 0f Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there dismounted from a train the two foremost leaders of the day in the coal and steel industries-Andrew Carnegie and H. C. Frick. Their attention was drawn to a well-loaded car of coke, which their experienced eyes recognized as a superior product. "I'll bet you that coke is from the H. C. Frick Coke Company," Mr. Frick challenged. "I'll bet it was shipped by my company." In a spirit of fun Mr. Carnegie accepted the wager. Mr. Frick lost the bet: the coke had come from M0rewood, one of three sites being operated under the direction of a young entrepreneur, Erskine Ramsay. If Mr. Frick's confidence was somewhat dented by this occurrence, the responsibility was his own. He himself had opened the way for Erskine Ramsay to become the youngest of mine superintendents; and he had dispersed all dissension regarding his choice with the words : "I'm not interested in his years, I'm interested in his record. He makes more coke in an oven than any other superintendent. And I'll take 'em out 0f the cradle if they can make coke... Suppose he is only twenty years old? ... The d --- kid is a genius, I tell you." Erskine Ramsay was to follow in the tradition of Carnegie and Frick. Not only was he ambitious and a worker his background had prepared him for it. Coal mining was in the Ramsay blood. His father, Robert Ramsay, of whom the son once stated that he had no superior as coal mining and mechanical engineer in this country, once accounted in these words for the phenomenal accomplishments which had attached to the name "It does no harm to belong to a family of mining engineers who are just as good as any in America-if it is myself that says it." Anyone acquainted with Robert Ramsay's character realized that he was not given to overstatement. And the above-mentioned Mr. Carnegie encountered young Ramsay again, a few years later in his career, and wrote of him to young Erskine's father, that he was "going to be a credit `tae us a' " (a quotation from Robert Burns.) Nor have Mr. Ramsay's achievements been identified exclusively with the industrial field in which he early asserted himself. He has been an inventor whose techniques in mining engineering have received international recognition. As an investor of foresight, he has benefitted others immeasurably, as well as himself, being an influential factor in the upbuilding of several communities in his chosen and well-loved adopted home state of Alabama since 1887. He is a philanthropist whose benefactions have run into millions, the chief beneficiaries being educational and charitable institutions. El presente texto describe el panorama geográfico, causas y proceso de derrumbe del cerro "Cóndor Sencca", ubicado en el departamento de Apurímac. En 1945, un deslizamiento de roca se precipitó desde una ladera del río Mantaro, originando una represa de 101 metros de alto. Producto de las filtraciones de la reserva se provocó derrumbes en la parte alta de la reserva, ocasionando un descubrimiento de los depósitos sedimentarios en la laguna. En este sentido, se encontró que las causas posibles del derrumbamiento era la pérdida de estabilidad producida por el río y los sucesivos resbalamientos de masas de roca, cuyas masas perdieron estabilidad al desecarse la arcilla que rellenaba las junturas durante la época de sequías. Así, el daño que las lagunas pudieran ocasionar a las instalaciones hidroeléctricas se convierte en un factor de riesgo permanente. Por tanto, es recomendable que las represas, canales y demás estructuras de una planta, sean diseñadas dentro de las limitaciones económicas y contra los fenómenos hidraúlicos catastróficos, como el ocurrido en 1945.

ON mineral lease 38 of the Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, a shaft was sunk in the early days Ior prospecting purposes and at the present time it is accessible as far as the 1000-ft. level where a connexion exists with the main workings of the Corporation's Central Mine, mineral lease 9. About the year 1895· a crosscut was driven east from this shaft at the 1330-ft. level cutting the Central Ore-body in mineral lease 9 and the shaft is supposed to extend a further depth of 25 ft; but no records of any of this work are in existence, the whole of the evidence being based on hearsay and memory:Fig. 1 shows the position of the Extended shaft in relation to the main workings. The shaft filled with water to the 1000-ft. level where it overflowed through the crosscut to the main shaft and was pumped to the surface, but when the South drive on the 1300-ft. level was pushed to the southern boundary, it was deemed advisable for safety, to tap the water at this level and so relieve the...

[Executive Director’s note: ISEE is committed to continuing its efforts to ensure that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. In the July/August 2001 issue of the J o u rnal we printed excerpts from “Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Hazard,” an article from the Safety Update, published by Nobel Insurance Services. We also re minded readers of the text from the 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting as follows: “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underg round and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or N Ox may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses.” While incidents are rare, a number of cases in re c e n t years have resulted from outdoor blasting operations p roducing carbon monoxide gas that has migrated t h rough the earth and accumulated in nearby enclosed spaces. T h e re are steps that a blaster can take to be proactive in preventing incidents. These steps and studies of the occurrence have been expertly presented in several papers presented at ISEE conferences and included in the ISEE Conference Proceedings, available th rough the Blasters Library. In addition, Material Safety Data Sheets provided with explosives used in surf a c e blasting should provide additional information on gases p roduced by detonation. Below, we have reprinted the IME white paper, entitled “Fumes from Blasting Operations.” The paper underscores the unique set of circumstances that combine to contribute to high concentrations of CO measurements in underground, enclosed spaces following the detonation of explosive materials and provides recommendations to blasters

The influence of varying amounts of magnesia, silica, and alumina in iron ore sinter on its mineralogy, reducibility index (RI), reduction disintegration index (RDI), physical breakdown (AI and TI), and production properties (coke breeze rate) were examined. It was found that the mineralogy of iron sinter can more easily be predicted from its chemical composition than from the RI, RDI, AI or TI. Anticipating the consequence that varying amounts of MgO and SiO2would have on sinter properties is complex, and not necessarily predictable. High concentrations of Al2O3in the sinter result in high concentrations of the SFCA phase, but with drastically deteriorated properties. This study also confirmed that the form in which fluxes are added to the raw material sinter mixture affects the mineralogy and properties of the produced sinter.

In this study a generalized specification and costing model for high tonnage coal carrying conveyor belts of 3.5 to 100 miles is presented. These belt systems, in modular units or flights, of up to 9 miles in length can be considered in terms of gathering systems. The study format is sufficiently open to allow users to insert their own requirements and parameters. A specific case study is provided. Because conveyor belts are feasible almost anywhere, this study has not investigated any specific route or geographic location. Rather, it has concentrated on setting up an heuristic programming model for conveyor belt facility optimization and cost minimization. The analysis starts with the principle factors involved in the design of the system and their optimization for various cases. This is followed, in Section 5.4, with a factor by factor cost analysis based on industry data and the preceding optimization. The next step is the development of both facility and costing models suitable for computer analysis. Logic flow diagrams are presented at each major analytic step.

Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

"Non-contact eddy current sensing methods have been developed and applied to Cd0.955Zn0.045Te crystal growth to obtain a better understanding of the melt, solid nucleation, and the growth process. The application of this sensor approach relies on a large difference in liquid and solid electrical conductivities near the melting point and requires knowledge of the relationships between the electrical conductivity, melt composition, and temperature. Using a multifrequency encircling eddy current sensor, the electrical conductivities of three different Cd1-xZnxTe (x=0.00, 0.045, and 0.08) alloys were measured as a function of temperature in a laboratory-scale vertical Bridgman furnace. The measured solid and liquid electrical conductivities were then used in electromagnetic finite element models to analyze the multifrequency responses of eddy current sensor designs during the simulated growth of a crystal. These eddy current sensors were fabricated and installed in a vertical Bridgman furnace and used to monitor many Cd0.955Zn0.045 Te growth runs. One sensor was placed in the vicinity of the ampoule tip to detect undercooling/spontaneous nucleation and two other sensors (""absolute"" and ""differential"" designs) placed to monitor the movement/curvature of the liquid-solid interface during crystal growth. The sensor data was used to characterize the initial melt state, detect the onset of nucle-ation, determine the growth velocity, and identify the shape of the interface.IntroductionSingle crystal CdTe and its solid solution Cd1-xZnxTe alloys (0.03<x<0.05) are used as infrared transparent substrates for infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) detectors [1-6] and as solid state y- ray detectors [7-9j. Cd1-xZnxTe substrates are normally ""mined"" from large polycrystalline boules grown by the unseeded directional solidification of Cd1-xZnxTe melts using either a vertical or horizontal Bridgman process [10-14]. The vertical Bridgman method is particularly popular for growing CdTe and its related compounds. In this process, a Cd1-xZnxTe ingot is produced by first melting a charge in the hot zone of the furnace and then vertically translating the furnace (with its associated axial temperature profile) relative to the stationary crucible to cause directional solidification. In spite of many experimental efforts to investigate the relationships between material purity, stoichiometry, the controllable growth parameters (furnace temperature profiles, ampoule geometries/materials, furnace translation rates and starting position) and the resulting material characteristics (grain structure, dislocation densities, IR transmission, macro-segregation etc.), the yield of Cd1-xZnxTe of a quality suitable for large area (e.g. 4 cm x 6 cm) substrates remains low (<10%). Since much of this poor yield is directly associated with the crystal growth process (e.g. melt stoichiometry, solidification velocity, interface shape, temperature gradients, cooling rate, etc.) intensive efforts are under way to improve this technology."

O alto custo do coque na produção de zinco no Forno Waelz da Votorantim Metais Zinco, em Juiz de Fora, ensejou a realização de testes em parceria com o SENAI CIMATEC para utilização de combustíveis alternativos na Planta Piloto, com o objetivo de mapear a viabilidade técnica e financeira para utilização na Planta Industrial. Ao longo dos testes foram utilizados: cavaco de eucalipto, chip de pneu e moinha de carvão vegetal. Os testes foram realizados com sucesso, apresentando oportunidades de substituição do coque usado atualmente por combustíveis alternativos, com potencial de ganho financeiro para VMZ JF. Este potencial precisa ser validado em testes em escala industrial.

O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em caracterizar o comportamento termomecânico do aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 316L a partir dos parâmetros de encruamento (h), recuperação dinâmica (r) e recristalização dinâmica (n, t0,5). Na parte inicial das curvas de escoamento plástico a relação sc/sp = 0,92 é relativamente alta, sendo um indicativo que o amaciamento promovido pela DRV é intenso, corroborado a moderada EFE, ?sfe = 66,86 mJ/m2. Na segunda parte das curvas vê-se que há um atraso na cinética de amaciamento dinâmico com maior valor para t0,5 e menores valores do expoente de Avrami n, devido à competição entre os mecanismos DRV-DRX

"El presente texto señala la evolución de los modelos genéticos de geología económica del yacimiento minero Tres Cruces. Dicho yacimiento se encuentra localizado en el noreste del Perú, adyacente al distrito minero de Quiruvilca. A partir del año 1995 se le reconoció como el mayor productor de oro a través de un programa de exploración en la Formación volcánica Calipuy. Posteriormente, el yacimiento fue visitado por variosgeólogos que postularon diferentes modelos genéticos del yacimiento para así estimar su potencial económico -en tanto se incrementaron los datos geológicos del yacimiento. Por ello, el texto presenta el modelo genético de Tres Cruces, como el más adecuado, aunque la evaluación de su potencial econornica está aún en progreso."

In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the &quot;rods&quot; required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. In this study, spent grain was used as an adsorbent for the removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solutions, the process parameters such as contact time, solution pH, adsorbent dose, and initial Hg(II) concentration were studied in batch experiments. The initial adsorption process was fast, 91.08% of adsorption occurred within 5 min and equilibrium was reached at around 30min. Adsorption process was found to follow pseudo-second-order kinetics. The equilibrium data were better fitted to Langmuir isotherm than Freundlich isotherm with the maximum adsorption capacity 41.36 mg/g. The structure and component of spent grain before and after adsorption of Hg(II) were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX), these analysis also confirmed the adsorption of Hg(II) onto spent grain. The results indicated that spent grain had potential as a new inexpensive adsorbent for Hg(II) removal from aqueous solutions.

A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to be abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1,000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.

A laboratory study wan made to determine whether drying and preheating Colorado oil shale with waste retort gases has any appreciable effect on its oil yield. Samples of crushed oil shale were heated at subretorting temperatures in a specially constructed electric furnace by gases similar in composition to waste gases from oil-shale retorts. The results of this study showed that preheating oil shale with nitrogen or a reducing mixture had no effect upon the oil or water yield. However, oxygen in the preheating gas caused a decrease of oil and an increase of water. In general, the oil yield decreased with (1) increase in oxygen content of the heating gases, (2) increase in temperature of the heating gas, (3) increase in heating time, and (4) decrease in the particle size of tho shale. The decrease in oil and the increase in water resulting from preheating were due to oxidation of the benzene-insoluble organic material (kerogen) rather than to oxidation of the benzene-soluble organic material (natural bitumen) in the shale, A small amount of oil was volatilized during preheating, which would constitute an additional loss if prober precautions were not taken to recover it. The results obtained in this laboratory study indicate that oil shale can be preheated without appreciable decrease in oil yield by proper selection of preheating conditions.

Q: It is May 1961 at Bill Wrather&apos;s Washington house. Bill, think back to your first job after college. Wrather: Perhaps I ought to go back a little bit further than my first job. I entered the University of Chicago with the idea of studying law. My intention was to take a 4-yr liberal arts course and superimpose a law degree on that. But during my undergraduate work I fell under the influence of R. D. Salsbury. He decided I had some talent as a geologist and influenced me to take a geological course. Nevertheless, I did not give up the idea of law. While in school I took a spell of typhoid fever and almost died. The doctor recommended outdoor exercise, so a geological job seemed logical. W. H. Emmons was a graduate student in the University and he interceded with Dr. Hayes of the USGS. I went on the payroll as assistant packer at $60 a month. I had one of the most glorious summers I ever spent in my life. That fall and the following year I took law courses and became thoroughly convinced that I was cut out for a geologist rather than a lawyer. I finished up my law work in 1908 while waiting for a job with Bill Emmons, who was doing a careful study of Goldfield and Tonopah.

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines contract research on the disposal of retorted oil shale. A data base has been developed describing the physical-chemical properties, geotechnical engineering properties, and natural cementation characteristics of spent shale. Results of field compaction tests and seepage pond tests are presented, along with results of a partially saturated finite element seepage model used to predict infiltration and seepage rates. Preliminary engineering analyses are presented for underground disposal systems, which include material transport methods, and for a surface disposal system, which includes stability analyses.

CALIFORNIA possesses such an abundance of ceramic materials other than clays, that she is quite independent of other states and foreign countries so far as these materials are concerned. Certain users import some feldspar, silica, and allied minerals, but they do so from choice and not necessity. Production is largely for home consumption, so the total volume of ceramic materials produced is comparatively small. Many small deposits of the materials here under discussion are worked by individuals, and their output sold to individual grinding companies or users. The data given here shall be confined to the larger deposits and developments because they give a truer picture of typical deposits, operations, and materials.
