Son diversas las técnicas que se han empleado para el reforzamiento de la roca durante el proceso de excavaciones subterráneas en la mina Quiruvilca. Sin embargo, los sistemas utilizados actualmente resultan inoperantes, dado que sus elementos de perno y anclaje no se complementan con el terreno señalado. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el sistema idóneo para el sostenimiento de roca en el que el rendimiento estuvo enmarcado entre los pernos de anclaje y madera. Este método denominado "eslinga para roca", consiste en una combinación de elementos de refuerzo activo y de suspensión, cuya construcción permite aprovechar algunos recursos existentes en la mina.

The leaching processes and mechanisms of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth (RE) ores with ammonium sulfate were investigated for their high efficiency and low consumption exploitation. The leaching process is a typical reversible heterogeneous ion exchange reaction in liquid–solid systems. The raw ore and leached tailings were analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Results indicated that no dissolution or structural changes of the ores occurred during the leaching process. The migrations of RE3+, Al3+, and NHþ 4 in the leaching process were studied under various liquid–solid ratios. With increasing liquid–solid ratio, the content of NHþ 4 adsorbed on clay mineral by physical effect decreased, NHþ 4 adsorbed by ion-exchange increased, and the content of exchanged RE and Al increased until reaching equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of the RE ores for NHþ 4 remained about 0.61–0.63 mg/g. It was difficult to desorb NHþ 4 from RE ores with washing water alone. The leaching mechanism of Al was the same as RE, but the leaching of Al slightly lagged behind RE. At the optimal liquid–solid ratio of 0.4:1, the leaching efficiencies of RE and Al were 95.51% and 90.99%, respectively, and 56.65% of NHþ 4 remained in the leachate. After impurity removal and RE precipitation, the leachate can be reused by replenishing fresh leaching agent. The aim of this study is to enhance the leaching process of RE, restrain the leaching of impurities, and decrease the consumption of leaching agents.

[Determine how subsidence resulting from underground coal mining affects surface structures, and evaluate the usefulness s of the tiltmeter for monitoring foundation movement. Approach The Bureau of Mines is studying foundation response to mine subsidence in order to determine how subsidence-induced ground movements affect foundations in place directly above the mint. These investigations are essential if economic mitigation and repair techniques are to be made. In addition, commercially available tiltmeter are being evaluated (or use as a cost-effective monitoring technique. To study foundation response and to evaluate the tiltmeter system, full-scale model foundations were constructed, instrumented, and monitored for three years. Vertical and horizontal displacements, tilt magnitudes and directions, and observed damages were recorded. Displacements were compared with measured lilt to determine if the tiltmeter was tracking foundation response to subsidence, The Bureau developed a computer software package to aid in the reduction and analysis of the tiltmeter data.]

South Deep Mine is currently undertaking numerous voidfilling projects using low strength aerated cement products. Representative samples from one such site, were taken and tested for the load deformation behaviour under uniaxial loading conditions. The process of sample collection, laboratory preparation and testing are explained in detail. The results of testing were analyzed and the critical aspects pointed out as a design consideration to be implemented as part of the quality control and assurance program. Design aspects and underground application of the aerated cement product are discussed for the particular site on 58 level SV1. A simple instrumentation has been designed and installed to enable monitoring of any future movements in this area. A quality control and assurance process has been formulated enabling all aspects of the support installation in this excavation to be signed off.

Results of a complex three-seam interaction analysis in a western U.S. coal mine are presented. The physical situation simulated by the models represents the development of a set of entries underneath two previously mined seams with all three seams in proximity to each other. The layout and the geometry of the remnant pillars in the upper seams were nonuniform and not always directly superimposed over each other, creating a very challenging modeling problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines' MULSIM/PC computer code was upgraded and enhanced to perform the required three-seam interaction calculations. Analysis was limited to simple linear-elastic assumptions as only peak stresses were required. Results clearly indicated that stress concentrations in the lower seam increased approximately 100 percent when compared to cases simulating no extraction in the two upper seams. These stress concentrations generally occurred in zones directly below points of highest abutment pressures in the upper seams. Overall, the model results compared favorably with actual documented observed behavior where roof failures were known to have occurred.

Heats of solution of yttrium chloride and oxide in hydrochloric acid were measured by Bureau of Mines researchers. Using the heat of combustion of yttrium mentioned in the literature, the Bureau calculated the heat of formation of yttrium chloride to be -239.16 + 0.50 kcal./mole. The Bureau experiments gave evidence that the heats of solution of yttrium chloride from the literature are mostly too low because of water and/or oxychloride impurities. Heat of combustion of yttrium (8)3/ and its heat of solution in hydrochloric acid (2, 14) have been measured. The earlier heat of solution measurement (2) is unreliable because of possible potassium contamination (4). Heat of solution of yttrium chloride has been measured by three researchers (3, 9, 15), who obtained widely different results. Spedding and Flynn (14) report the heat of formation of yttrium chloride as -232.69 kcal./mole from their solution studies. The present work was designed to check the reported heats of solution of yttrium chloride and to determine the heat of solution of yttrium oxide. The latter measurement would allow the results of solution and combustion data for yttrium to be intercompared.

There is a rapid expansion of world’s infrastructure and simultaneously existing infrastructure is aging. The maintenance of infrastructures has been of particular concern to the engineering community. Monitoring and evaluating the structures have become more significant than ever. Ground anchor is an important part of the structure where it is installed. Unfortunately there are limited testing methods available to assess the force in the pre-stressing steel. High cost, complicated equipment and limitation of space often prevent these methods from being implemented. DYNA Force sensors have been developed to measure the force in the pre-stressing steel during construction and at any time during the lifetime of the structure. These sensors make use of the magneto-elastic properties of ferrous materials. A readout unit is designed to magnetically energize the steel through the sensor and measure the response of the steel to the process. The readout unit then converts the response into a direct force reading. They can be used for bare, epoxy- coated, galvanized and greased-sheathed steel in the bonded, un-bonded, grouted or un-grouted length of the tendon. It measures the force of the steel element at the location where it is installed and can be recorded manually, automatically, or remotely. The sensor is robust, requires no maintenance and it is expected to have a similar service life to that of the surrounding structure. Sensors have received attention in terms of accuracy, performance, ease in installation, durability, and cost effectiveness. Sensor readings provide a second measurement, in conjunction with the jack pressure gauge, of the post tensioning force during initial testing procedure for ground anchors. This paper describes its application in tie-back and tie-down anchors and force monitoring of retaining walls, bridge abutment and dams where the data were collected manually, automated and remotely. INTRODUCTION Our infrastructure is expanding and the existing infrastructure is aging. Some structures are expensive to maintain and some occasionally fail. There is a large demand for implementing health monitoring of structures. Many tie-backs, retaining walls, dams and other geotechnical structures are post-tensioned and many of them need repair using a post-tensioned system. On many occasions during construction and service life of the structure, it is useful to know the force in the post-tensioning and anchor system. Many piles and drilled shafts are designed using reinforcing steel and the compressive forces in reinforcement are unknown. Although there are many methods to measure the tendon force, most of them are cumbersome, expensive, and the accuracy varies depending on the method used.

China?s remarkable levels of economic growth during the past three decades have lifted almost 300 million people out of poverty. This amazing achievement has placed an increasing demand on energy and minerals, especially coal, which supplies 68.7 percent of China?s energy (June 2011). It is estimated that China mined more than 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of coal in 2010, three times as much when compared to merely 10 years earlier. Such an impressive achievement does not come without major costs ?? including concerns with mine safety and an increasing number of occupational illnesses due to fast growth. This article reports on one of the major safety concerns in China?s coal mining, dust and dust control practices, and known cases of caol worker?s pneumoconiosis affiliated with prolonged exposure to excessive coal dusts. The exact size of China?s mining industry is not known, but it is estimated the coal industry is at least five-million people strong, and the metal and nonmetals industry probably employs another three million people. To meet increasing energy demand, China mined more than 3.1 Gt (3.4 billion st) of coal in 2010 from its 15,000 plus coal operations1, most of which are small- to medium-sized operations with annual coal productions ranging from a few thousand tons to 300 kt (330,000 st). These small coal operations are typically in remote areas, inadequately engineered, poorly ventilated and still using rudimentary drilling and blasting mining methods employing antiquated mining equipment and, presenting safety concerns, i.e., methane and dust explosions.

Prevention of coal-mine explosions depends largely upon thorough knowledge of the causes that initiate explosions. A review of coal-mine explosions in one geographical area when supplemented by nationwide data of similar nature, should serve as a guide for the adoption of measures for explosion prevention. Explosions in bituminous-coal mines of the United States during the 10 years ended December 31, 1932, ranked third in the causes of fatal accidents and constituted 16.1 percent of all fatal accidents in bituminous mines. Kentucky now ranks fourth in coal output in the coal-producing States of this country; a study of the coal-mine explosions in this state will be of definite interest locally among coal-mining people, as well as to those in the coal-mining industry who are concerned in preventing coal-mine explosions. This circular reviews gas and dust explosions in Kentucky coal mines to show their hazards, to point out the influence of certain factors in causing explosions, and to indicate the effectiveness of preventive measures.

This U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report presents results of stress analyses and field observations to investigate the effects of elevated trench drifts on the structural stability of rock mass zones surrounding a production draw drift in a mine utilizing a mechanized load-haul-dump (LHD) trench undercut panel caving system. A two-dimensional boundary-element mine stress model was developed to predict the locations and extent of damaged rock mass zones surrounding draw drifts where adjacent, parallel trench drifts are either elevated or not elevated above the LHD production draw drift level. A Mohr-Coulomb shear-failure criterion was obtained directly from in situ borehole shear test data. Hock-Brown shear-failure parameter values were computed from borehole-shear and triaxial test data. A procedure is described to estimate these parameters when a rock mass rating (RMR) value and triaxial data on intact samples exist, and no borehole shear test data exist Results indicate that trench drifts, elevated to the level equal to the height of the LHD production draw drift, would not minimize material damage nor significantly enhance the stability of rib and crown pillar zones surrounding production draw drifts in the mechanized LHD trench undercut caving panel investigated at this mine.

"Utilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. Almost ten years ago, an experimental research effort was carried out in the US to investigate the magnitude and mechanism of development of the bond strength between micropiles and existing concrete. The study resulted in important conclusions on the mechanism of connection capacity development and provided specific recommendations for practical design of micropile-to-footing connections. In the last five years, the original study was complemented by an intensive experimental effort in Portugal aimed at answering many of the questions still remaining on this topic. This paper is a summary of the knowledge that is presently available on the capacity of micropile-to-existing footing connections. It presents the results and observations of model tests performed in the US and Portugal, as well as some tests from actual construction sites. The paper presents clear evidence that friction may be the most important component of connection capacity. It also presents a clear correlation between confinement and connection capacity.IntroductionUtilization of micropiles for structural retrofit requires connection of the micropiles to the footings of the existing structure. Smooth and textured micropile inserts of varying lengths were tested to failure inside pre-drilled holes of varying diameters. That investigation led to several publications (Gomez et al. 2005, Wilder et al. 2005, Cadden 2009) on the mechanism of development of bond strength between micropiles and concrete, which included a chart for preliminary bond value selection depending on the diameter of the hole and texture of the micropile.An intensive testing program was carried out in Portugal in the last five years. The program focused on answering questions posed by the original investigation and on finding the relationship between connection capacity and level of confinement. Both investigations, and especially the testing performed in Portugal, provided an invaluable amount of information on the mechanisms of failure of micropile-to-footing connections. This information should be the basis for development of design procedures that, until now, were not available."

The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of' alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of' this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from. June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942. The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres. Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.

A produção de cânulas, materiais utilizados na fabricação de dispositivos médicos, é feita a partir de uma tira de aço inoxidável 304L laminado em tubos e posteriormente soldado por processo GTAW. Após esse procedimento, o tubo sofre uma série de passes de trefilação com recozimento e sem recozimento, para diminuir seu diämetro. Por fim, são realizadas as etapas de corte, apontamento e limpeza do material. Durante a trefilação, uma série de defeitos chamados “GOUGE” é encontrada, provocando altas perdas nos processos, em função das desconformidades com as especificações técnicas. Inicialmente, no intuito de caracterizar e detectar possíveis causas dos defeitos foram analisadas as características do processo, desde a soldagem até a trefilação sem recozimento. Em seguida, foram feitas análises com microscopia de varredura, para avaliar algumas características metalúrgicas do material. Como o objetivo era caracterizar o defeito, diversas causas possíveis surgiram, como a influência da corrente ou velocidade de soldagem, temperatura de tratamento juntamente com as reações do gás Amônia na geração das desconformidades, a velocidade de trefilação ou a quantidade de óleo lubrificante. Concluiu-se que o processo de soldagem não foi o causador da falha, bem como a trefilação sem recozimento. A possibilidade da causa da descontinuidade ficou com o processo de trefilação com recozimento. Assim, diversas propostas para trabalhos futuros surgiram.

Nos dias contemporâneos, houve uma evolução do armamento utilizado e há uma tentativa dos centros de defesa e balística de acompanhar essa evolução no desenvolvimento de blindagens cada vez mais eficientes. Essa eficiência passa tanto na leveza do material quanto na sua capacidade de proteção. Vivemos também nos dias atuais uma preocupação com questões ambientais e energéticas e é justamente, envolto nesse cenário que pesquisas relacionadas à utilização de fibras naturais (FNL’S), tem se tornado cada vez mais relevantes. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho individual de compósitos de matriz poliéster reforçados com fibras de sisal, quando submetidos ao impacto balístico de munição com calibre de 7,62 mm. Neste trabalho foram testados compósitos reforçados com 20% e 30% em volume de fibras de sisal. Com um auxílio de um radar Doppler, foram registradas as velocidades inicial (de impacto) e residual (após a perfuração do impacto). De posse desses dados foi possível calcular à energia cinética absorvida pelo compósito e estimar à velocidade limite do projétil que essa blindagem é capaz de suportar. Os resultados após alguns tratamentos estatísticos demonstraram que o compósito em questão tem resultados similares à outras blindagens reforçadas com FNL’S, representando mais uma opção de blindagem moderna.

The recently performed study represents realistic and modern pipeline blasting techniques combined with modern data acquisition. D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. The South East Transit Project is a $520 million project in Brisbane, Australia which includes the construction of a 32 km Busway to access the south-eastern suburbs. Close to the centre of Brisbane, tunneling techniques have been used to minimise surface disruption. This paper describes some of the features of the longest driven tunnel on the project, the Vulture Street Tunnel. The Busway is a two lane expressway for buses which requires a 10.2 m finished width and a 12.6 m excavated span of driven tunnel. The Vulture Street Tunnel carries the Busway at minimal cover beneath the operating Vulture Street Railway Station, beneath a three storey office building and beneath the roadway to the Mater Hill Busway station. Halfway along the route, a Y-junction has been constructed to enable future connection with a light rail route. Key features in the design and construction of the Vulture Street Tunnel include: Use of canopy tubes to drive a 12 m wide tunnel beneath operating railway tracks with less than two metres of cover in highly weathered rock. Underpinning the office building in the route of the tunnel construction from within the building carpark. Construction of a 24 m span Y-junction with 7 metres cover of weathered and faulted rock. Use of predictive analysis as an adjunct to traditional back analysis to estimate the tunnel settlements from pressuremeter test results. This paper describes the design methodology with particular reference to settlement prediction, as well as construction innovations used to complete the tunnel. This paper will be of interest to all designers who have to create large spans in minimal cover in weak rock in urban areas and who have to predict the settlement

La lixiviación en canchas es una alternativa de tratamiento útil que se considera para aquellos óxidos cuya ley sea demasiado baja para procesarlos por trituración fina y lixiviación por agitación y que presenten dificultades técnicas para someterlos a lixiviación en tinas. Así, en el sistema de canchas, la lixiviación será más rápida y más eficiente que en una simple lixiviación en pilas.
