Industry must be made to realize that "Safety First" means just that - safety first. The miner must realize that safety first takes precedence over earnings. The employer must realize that safety is the first consideration, and is not to be subordinated to profit-making. Neither employee nor employer is justified in adopting the principle of safety first with reservations; that is they will practice safety first only so long as they think that it does not interfere with earnings or profits. This paper proposes to demonstrate that suberdinating safety to possible profit is short-sighted and that over an ex- tended period of time it dres not result in increased profits or earnings. An employee through disregard of safe practice may receive an injury that will cause him a loss of earnings if, indeed, he is net killed or permanently in- capacitated. If permanently incapacitated any compensation he may receive is very likely to be wholly inadequate as compared with probable earnings if the accident had not cccurred. The employer, upon his part, will find that the burden of compensating his injured employse will far exceed the outlay of money necessary to maintain a reasonable program of safety in his mine or plant. The mine foreman is one of the most important factors in the matter of mine safety. A vigilant and competent mine foreman, once he has established the confidence of the employees in his ability as a foreman, can be of invalu- able assistance in promoting mine safety, for through him and his assistants the employees may be made to cooperate. Every employer should remember, then, that the soluction of the foremen and their assistants is one of the most important matters connected with the work of establishing the maximum amount of safety in his mine. Everyone connected with the mining industry must be made to realize that there is to be no back-sliding and no let-up in safety work; that no matter how dry and tedious the routine may seem it is absolutely essential and justi- fied for both humanitarian and economical reasons. Efficient safety effort pays dividends in actual cash to both employer and employee. About 50 per cent of underground accidents in coal mines take place at the working face where the miners dig and load the coal. Approximately 17 per cent of coal-mine fatal accidents are the result of underground haulage. O objetivo deste trabalho foi implementar a célula de atendimento a prioridades dos clientes na ArcelorMittal Tubarão (Cockpit de Atendimento a Clientes), com foco na melhoria dos indicadores relacionados a entrega para clientes e visando reduzir a burocracia e barreiras organizacionais de forma a agilizar a tomada de decisão e consequentemente agilizar o fluxo dos pedidos prioritários na usina, desde a produção de aço até o despacho de produtos. O projeto foi implementado em etapas, com destaque para duas frentes, sendo uma de gestão da mudança, com a implementação do conceito de gestão por processos e em paralelo toda a implementação de infraestrutura sistêmica para suporte ao processo. Seis meses após o inicio do projeto a implementação do conceito de Gestão por Processo, de baixo custo e alto impacto no negócio trouxe uma evolução significativa nos indicadores de atendimento a cliente, com destaque para a consecução de atendimento aos pedidos prioritários que saltou de cerca de 30% para patamares acima dos 90%, assim como o lead time total de atendimento a pedidos que foi reduzido em cerca de 30%.

A numerical formulation of bigh-order accuracy, based on variational methods, is proposed for the solution of multidimensional diffusion-convection-type equations. Accurate solutions are obtained without the difficulties that standard finite difference approximations present. In addition, tests show that accurate solutions of a one-dimensional problem can be obtained in the neighborhood of a sharp front without the need for a large number of calculations for the entire region of interest. Results using these variational methods are compared with several standard finite difference approximations and with a technique based on the method of characteristics. The variational methods are shown to yield higher accuracies in less computer time. Finally, it is indicated how one can use these attractive features of the variational methods for solving miscible displacement problems in two dimensions. INTRODUCTION The problem of finding suitable numerical approximations for equations describing the transport of heat or mass by diffusion and convection simultaneously has been of interest for some time. Equations of this type, which will be called diffusionconvection equations, arise in describing many diverse physical processes. Of particular interest here is the equation describing the process by which one miscible liquid displaces another liquid in a one-dimensional porous medium. Diamond, drilling of some blast holes in stoning operations is practised in at least two iron mines in the Lake Superior district - the Soudan mine of the Oliver Iron Mining Co., on the Vermilion range at Soudan, Minn., and the Anvil-Palms mine, operated by Pickands, Bather & Co., on the Gogebic range at Bessemer, Mich. Diamond drilling, at the Soudan nine has partly replaced percussion drilling because of the extreme hardness of the ore and of the lean formation. According to Wolff,4/ the jasper or lean formation in this mine is the hardest rock regularly drilled in any commercial operation.

The Ameristar Casino expansion project included the design and construction of a 25-story hotel and 9-story parking structure expansion. The site is located in a floodplain on the banks of the Missouri River in Saint Charles, Missouri, where the underlying soils are potentially liquefiable. The geotechnical engineer performed subsurface exploration and analysis, which included site-specific seismic response and liquefaction, and provided geotechnical design recommendations. In the event of an earthquake, post-liquefaction settlement was calculated to be approximately 14 inches. Additional project constraints included wetlands protection, construction adjacent to the existing facility, flood protection and river bank stability. Because of the liquefaction issue, the geotechnical engineer consulted with a specialty geotechnical contractor on ground improvement methods. This consultation led to a proposal to eliminate deep foundations from the design and support the structures on shallow and mat foundations. The geotechnical engineer assisted the design team with foundation design analysis and value engineering assessments. Together with the project team, the geotechnical engineer used the data to evaluate foundation options and construction methods to overcome the site challenges and concluded that ground improvement was the optimum course of action. Because of the nature of the site constraints, a number of ground improvement methods were needed. The geotechnical engineer evaluated the methods proposed by the geotechnical contractor and provided the technical specifications for the ground improvement bid package, which included vibro-compaction, compaction grouting and micropiles. The ground improvement allowed for the use of shallow foundations (mat and spread footings), which provided the client with significant time and cost savings over the deep foundation alternatives.

Sabe-se dos problemas associados com as inclusões não metálicas, os quais afetam não somente a operação de fabricação, como também a qualidade do produto final. Por esses motivos, muitos estudos têm sido realizados para melhorar o controle do tamanho, quantidade, forma, distribuição e composição das inclusões. Especificamente para as inclusões de espinélio MgO·Al2O3, ainda é preciso melhorar o entendimento dos fenômenos sobre a formação e modificação destas inclusões para um melhor controle ao longo do processo de fabricação do aço e obter maior limpidez inclusionária nos aços. Assim, neste trabalho, foram revisados tópicos reportados na literatura relacionados com: a formação, influência da composição da escória e modificação com cálcio das inclusões de espinélio.

"The Atlantis-Il-Deep is a stratified metalliferous deposit located along the median valley of the Red Sea at a water depth of about 2200 m. The metal-bearing mud contains sulphides of zinc, copper and iron with significant amounts of silver, gold and cobalt. A variety of oxide, siliceous and carbonaceous gangue material is also present. Long sediment cores indicate that the thickness of the deposit may reach 25 m, but the average kriged thickness of metal-rich sediments is about 11 m.Mining geostatistics was applied to estimate the Red Sea offshore mineral resources. Experimental semi-variograms were computed along 0 ± 180 degrees and then models were fitted to analyze the mineralization phenomenon. Kriging estimates indicate that 696.330 million t of bulk sediments contain 1.891 million t of zinc, 0.425 million t of copper and 3. 75 thousand t of silver. Gold and cobalt contents were calculated from the analysis of solids in flotation concentrates as 47 t and 5368 t respectively. The significant outcome of implementing geostatistics to the Red Sea brine precipitates is not only for the evaluation of metal resources, but it also provides a useful tool in the optimization of selective dredging of appropriate areas to be mined. IntroductionThe discovery and extensive exploration of hot brines and hydrothermal sediments in the Red Sea median valley revealed the fact that the Atlantis-II-Deep is a potentially exploitable metalliferous mud in the economic sense. Sediments in the mineralized deep are composed mainly of oxides, various types of silicates and sulphides with considerable concentrations of zinc, copper, cadmium, silver and gold. The mineral-rich deposit, located at a mean water depth of about 2000 m, has an average thickness of 11 m, and is covered by a brine layer having a temperature of 60°C."

Foi desenvolvido um software para cálculo do balanço térmico dos fornos de reaquecimento de placas da Usiminas em Ipatinga. Ele realiza a busca automática de dados operacionais e das placas reaquecidas, valida, trata os dados e realiza os cálculos das parcelas de entrada e saída dos aportes térmicos para cada forno. Além disso, são calculados o rendimento, a eficiência térmica e o índice de ocupação dos fornos. O desenvolvimento foi realizado em ambientes visuais, com utilização de interfaces gráficas para fácil interação dos usuários com o software. A validação do software foi realizada pela comparação de resultados obtidos na busca automática com valores reais operacionais de balanços térmicos já realizados nos fornos.

This paper presents observations on the installation of drilled shafts from two construction projects and an academic study with experimental and analytical parts. The construction projects involved the use of pressurized drilling methods. The experimental part of the academic study involved the use of the auger drilling method. The analytical part of the academic study investigated the effect of drilling methods on the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of drilled shafts under lateral loads. The concept of ?free-length? is introduced for the lateral load design of pressure-drilled shafts that are thought to be fully embedded within a soil media. The academic part of the study presented herein was conducted in Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

A etapa de flotação convencional do Concentrador 2 ocorre em um circuito com 13 tanques de flotação que recebem o produto dos ciclones limpadores (-0,15mm +0,030mm). O concentrado desta etapa contribui com aproximadamente 80% do volume de produção do concentrador. A necessidade da implantação do sistema de controle avançado de processos (SCAP) advém da alta heterogeneidade na alimentação do concentrador, uma vez que a Samarco não conta com pilha de homogeneização. O objetivo principal do projeto foi maximizar a recuperação metálica da flotação convencional e reduzir a variabilidade do teor de sílica no concentrado final. Aliado ao sistema de análise de imagem de espuma e ao analisador de sílica online, a ferramenta demostrou que, além de atingir os objetivos esperados, trouxe estabilização ao processo e padronização da operação.

El presente trabajo presenta una metodología para evaluar al supervisor de seguridad -en tanto considera el conocimiento y las habilidades personales del mismo. Para ello, se revisa tres maneras de evaluar los factores de eficiencia del supervisor como: conocimento, aceptación y pasión. Dichos factores fueron aplicados exitosamente en la operación I Cerro Corona, (Cajamarca) mediante la fórmula E=QxAxP, basada en la metodología Six Sigma en la operación. De forma que se convierte en una guía para el proceso de selección y genera un marco referencial en la evaluación de las competencias claves del supervisor de seguridad.
