São avaliados os consumos de energia elétrica, oxigênio, gás natural e materiais carbonosos; os tempos entre vazamentos, com forno ligado e com forno desligado, assim como a produtividade horária. Com os dados obtidos, se analisa a influência dos metálicos (e seu estado térmico ao momento do carregamento), e o design do forno, sobre os consumos específicos mencionados e a produtividade.

The management of solid waste is known to be a large and increasing problem in high-population areas throughout the world. It is not necessary here to add further definition to the nature and magnitude of the problem. Instead, it is the purpose of this paper to describe a new process, called the Andco-Torrax System, which will be of use in converting municipal solid waste into useful energy forms and a granulated slag by-product. The paper includes a description of the first commercial plant for the process.

DEVELOPMENTS respecting beryllium during the past year have been sufficient to center attention on it as likely to be the most important of any of the chemical elements that have recently found a place for themselves in technical industry. This importance is only potential, however, largely because adequate supplies of beryllium ore will be necessary. The beryllium industry will be only as great as the mines which support it. To find and develop large mines will be the problem. Chief of the immediate commercial developments in the United States is beryllium-copper and its espousal by Anaconda and Riverside even at present high prices. According to the pamphlets of these companies, it ap¬pears that beryllium is to copper nearly what carbon is to iron. When one considers that the tensile strength of pure copper is about 33,000 lb. per sq. in., but that the addition of 1.5 to 2.5 per cent of beryllium produces a heat-treatable alloy with a maximum tensile strength of 220,000 lb. or over, the analogy to carbon and iron is made strikingly, clear. Striking among the properties of beryllium-copper is its resistance to fatigue, claimed to be equal or superior to that of spring steel. It needs little imagination to foresee a great industry for this alloy alone.

Filtration using Ceramic Foam Filters (CFFs) is a method widely used to separate inclusions from molten aluminium. In the present work, the specific permeability and form drag coefficients of nominal 50 mm thick commercial Al2O3- based CFFs, of grades 30, 50, 65 and 80, have been calculated from pressure drop experiments using high (60–500 mm s−1) and low (0.2–10 mm s−1) water velocities. Moreover, 2D axial symmetric Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models have been developed, using COMSOL Multiphysics® to validate the experimental results. The empirically obtained values were defined as global parameters used to model the pressure, as well as the velocity fields in the water pipes and in the CFFs. The modelled pressure drop over the filter thickness for the high water velocity experiments showed < ± 1% deviation from the corresponding experimental results for all CFF grades. Moreover, the developed model also showed good agreement with the experimental results obtained from the low water velocity experiments, where the deviation of the pressure drop for the CFF samples of grade 30, 50 and 65 were ≤ ± 4.6% and for CFF samples of grade 80 ≤ ± 13.4%.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating chemical and biological decontamination of complex wastewaters such as tailings pond water containing 280 ppm CN and 5 ppm Se as well as significant concentrations of arsenic, copper, iron, silver, and zinc. The most effective chemical procedure involves cyanide oxidation using hydrogen peroxide or sodium hypochlorite followed by selenium reduction using ferrous hydroxide. The effluent contains ?1 ppm CN and 20 ppb Se; concentrations of other - major contaminants meet National Drinking Water Standards. Preliminary research indicates that biological cyanide oxidation is possible even in highly alkaline solutions (pH 10.5) containing high cyanide concentrations; indigenous bacteria destroyed 85% of the cyanide. Exploratory research shows that other bacteria removed up to 79% of the selenium from chemically oxidized, low- cyanide water. These promising results may lead to a final processing scheme that involves a combination of chemical and biological techniques.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the &quot;two flow drawdown&quot; technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

The importance of Somerset County, Pa., as a coal producer is due in large measure to the presence reserves of low-volatile bituminous coals. Although many coal beds of minable thickness are present, the important reserves are to be found in those beds underlying the Pittsburgh bed. The Kittenning beds and Freeport beds, which are responsible for the bulk of the present coal production in Somerset County and contain the largest reserves to meet future coal requirements, are usually thin and entirely free from impurities. The Pittsburgh bed, which has been such an important coal deposit in the coal areas immediately west and south of Somerset County, is of secondary importance in this county. Although generally rather friable, Somerset County coals have enjoyed wide receptability as excellent coals and to some extent have been utilized in the metallurgical market.

The objectives of this research were to define the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the aerosols associated with attached radon daughters in operating uranium mines, and to investigate the relationship between these aerosol parameters and operating conditions. Major Results and Conclusions The organic, inorganic and radiological characteristics of test chamber and active U-mine aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size. These measurements represent the first detailed analyses of the organic and inorganic components in U-mine aerosols and the first determinations of the details of the individual and total radon daughter distributions in operating U-mines. Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!&apos; the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

The use of air-decks to reduce explosive costs has become very topical in recent years. The majority of the research in this area has been arried out between the Soviet Union where reductions in explosive consumption of between 10-30% have been claimed with apparent benefits being gained in both fragmentation and movement. Work carried out by the University of Maryland using thick plexiglass blocks has supported these findings and indicated that air-decks in measetbe duration of action of the shock wave on the surrounding material by a factor of 2 to 5 (see Figure 1). Although the fracture network resulting from this mechanism is not as intense as that produced adjacent to the explosive charge it does appear to act over a larger volume of material. Although the mechanism attributed to air-decking has been studied in some detail the effect of this mechanism on the size distribution of material produced during a blast does not appear tot have attracted much attention.

"It has been known for some time that sizes of aqueous particles may be affected by flow-induced relative humidity (RH) changes. The RH of air flowing through an impactor decreases as a result of pressure drop through the impactor and increases because of aerodynamic cooling within the high-speed jets, as illustrated in Figure 1. Because the sizes of aqueous particles depend on RH, the impaction stage on which such particles are collected may be different from the stage where they ought to be col¬lected, based on the particle size at the sampler inlet.Fuchs (1980) reviewed literature on water vapor condensation in impactors. The reviewed impactors operated at jet velocities of 100-250 m/s. Particle size increases ow¬ing to water vapor condensation were found in all cases. In one case (Khorguani et al., 1970), it was found that very small droplets (Dp <_ 0.02 um) containing sodium chloride and silver iodide were collected in an impactor with a cut point of 0.32 µm and a jet velocity of 100 m/s. Fuchs believed that such particles could not be captured in an impactor without having been enlarged by condensation. Winkler (1974) sampled at¬mospheric dust with a rectangular nozzle impactor that had a nozzle cross section of 0.3 x 15 mm, a cut size of 0.4 um, and an average jet velocity of 100 m/s. No adhesive was used on the impaction plate. The collection efficiency increased as air humidity was increased from 20% to 100%. The effect was especially noticeable in the increased collection efficiency for hygroscopic particles, and was attributed to condensation.Extensive theoretical and experimental research work on the distortion of the particle size distributions in impactors was done by Biswas and coworkers (1985, 1987). The impactors employed in the study were a low-pressure impactor with high jet velocity stages (Hering et al., 1978, 1979) and a conventional six-stage impactor, Sierra's model 226, operated in the incompressible regime. Ammonium sulfate aerosols were chosen for the study. In the low-pressure impactor, an orifice operating at a Mach number of 1 causes a sudden pressure drop, significantly reducing the RH in the next two stages (stages 5 and 6). This results in a 0.15-um diameter ammonium sulfate droplet shrinking to about 0.07 um at stage 5 when the inlet RH is 95%. In stage 7, the tempera¬ture drop is considerable because the jet speed is sonic. For an inlet RH of 95%, a 0.03 um droplet grows to about 0.06 um. However, the same size droplet at an inlet RH of 25% grows to only 0.04 um. For the Sierra model 226 cascade impactor that is operated with a Mach number of 0.27 at the last stage (stage VI), it was found that for an inlet RH of about 67%, particle growth would occur in stage VI. At 80% RH, both stages V and VI were affected. Biswas et al. (1987) stated that Mach number alone does not determine the size biasing; the type of aerosol, the inlet conditions, the temperature and pressure ratio, and the impactor geometry (throat length, jet-to-plate distance, etc.) must be considered for each stage in evaluating the distortion of the particle size distribution."

"The Zambian copper mining industry as we know it today had its genesis in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production rising to a peak of 769 000 t in 1969, providingover 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 t. An average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000.Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and after more than US$12 billion investment, production levels increased year-on-year to a peak of 763 000 t in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000.This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support for other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings, and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies, and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing. Suggestions are proposed on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engines in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. This bibliography, therefore, is a compilation of references from interdisciplinary sources pertaining to diesels and related areas. Related areas are defined as those concerned with: (i) mine ventilation system design and operation; (ii) description, measurement, modeling and monitoring of mine atmosphere contaminants, and (iii) tests, standards, selection procedures, and operational practices for internal combustion engines in underground mines. References cited from source materials span the years 1900 to early 1977. Total number of references cited is 511. Subjective criteria governed the definition and selection of references. Therefore, this bibliography is not claimed to be all-inclusive nor does it purport to be an exhaustive search of all sources.

In order to better understand the effects of longwall mining on the methane reservoir overlying the panel, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH/PRL) designed and implemented a vertical borehole monitoring experiment (BME) on an active longwall panel. The mine operates in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The BME site was located away from either end of the panel to avoid mechanical influences caused by the draping of overburden in this region and was positioned at the same distance from the tailgate gateroad as the mine?s gob gas venthole sites. The borehole drilling depths and monitoring intervals were chosen to address a different stratigraphic zone in each of the three planned holes. The monitoring boreholes were positioned perpendicular to face advance using a close spacing pattern of about 15 m (50 ft) between collars. Boreholes were instrumented downhole and on the surface for various measurements. It was observed from the field data that the gob gas venthole fracture network formed 24-46 m (80-150 ft) ahead of the mining face. Overburden permeability?s within the same test zones increased 100 to 500 times following undermining. The borehole test interval within the fractured rock responded to overburden gas pressure while the test interval in the caved zone responded to mine ventilation conditions. Eight months after the boreholes were undermined, slug testing indicated permeabilities had increased further in the fractured rock zone. Measurements of surface movement indicate that the permeability development observed in the boreholes is a product of vertical subsidence without lateral movement within the tensional rock mechanics zone on a supercritical longwall panel. Results from this study suggest that maximum permeability in the longwall panel overburden is achieved 58 to 190 m (190 to 620 ft) behind the longwall following maximum compaction of the overburden.

A novel triple action load cell assembly (LCA) was developed to determine three index parameters reflecting compressive, tensile and shear characteristics of mudcakes. The results indicate that the tensile, compressive and torsional behaviour of mudcakes are strongly influenced by the physics and chemistry of the mud additives. Eine neuartige dreifach wirkende Druckkammer zur Bestimmung der drei Indexparameter Druck, Zug, und Scherung von Spülungskuchen wurde entwickelt. Die Ergebnisse weisen auf einen starken Einfluss der physikalischen und chemischen Spülungszusätze auf Druck, Zug, Scherung hin. Un assemblage d&apos;une nouvelle cellule a triple action (LCA) a été développée pour déterminer trois paramètres caractérisant la compression, la contrainte en traction et la résistance á la fracture des cakes. Les résultats indiquent que les comportements tensile, compressif et de torsion des argiles sont fortement influencés par la chimie et la physique des additifs des boues.

"A study conducted at 22 operating mines in the southern African region indicated that each mine employs about five management and improvement methods with roots in the manufacturing industry. All respondents reported the implementation of cost-saving initiatives, whereas 80% of the mines are affected by restructuring. TQM, Six Sigma, BPM, and TOC were found to be the most prevalent manufacturing management and improvement methods used. A mechanistic vs systemic evaluation of the suitability of these methods to bring about positive change in the industry suggested that complex, ever-changing mining systems are better served by a systemic flow-based approach, which is embedded in methods such as TOC, JIT, TPS, and Lean Production. These methods, however, lack industry presence, possibly because they do not effectively deal with the unique challenges associated with the mining environment. It is argued that successful mining business management and improvement depends on management’s ability to deal effectively with mining industry-specific requirements, the integration of the geologymining- plant system, and the implementation of systemic flow-based principles in all aspects of mining. IntroductionThe study aims to explore the use of manufacturing management and improvement methodologies in the southern African mining industry. Considering the unique challenges associated with mining operations, attention is given to the applicability of the most commonly used manufacturing methodologies in the tactical, operational, and strategic environments. The article endeavours to stimulate more research and debate in an unexplored field of study."

The Tennessee Copper Co. operated two mines in the Ducktown district during 1928. The Burra Burra mine is much the larger operation and is the chief source of the ore smelted and treated in the, company&apos;s smelter and acid plant rat Copperhill, 4.5 miles from Ducktown. This mine operates steadily and furnishes a regular output of about 40,000 tons per month. The Eureka mine is operated irregularly and produces a much smaller tonnage of high-sulphur ore the rate of output depending upon the demand for sulphur. During 1928 about 60 per cent of the combined output of these mines was shipped directly to the smelter, and the balance was concentrated before shipment in the flotation plant located near the mines. The energy transferred from a hammer to the pile top is considered as the effective energy in this paper. The effective energy is related to the pile dimensions, soil and pile-soil interface properties. This relation may be expressed as an equation based on the dimensionless theory. The relationship between pile capacity and effective energy was studied by performing a series of wave equation analyses using a commercial software called GRLWEAP (Wave Equation Analysis Program) by GRL Engineers, Inc. The results show that the pile capacity increases with the blow count when the effective energy is constant, however, it has a little change as the blow count is over 100 blows per foot. The pile capacity decreases as the ratio of pile penetration depth to pile diameter increases if the effective energy is constant. The pile capacity will increase as the pile diameter and wall thickness increases if the effective energy is constant. The pile stickout (pile length above the ground surface) does not have a significant effect on the effective energy and may be neglected. Curves for pile capacity versus effective energy are presented to be used for preliminary hammer selection according to effective energy and hammer efficiency. Finally, a case from PDA testing was studied. Measurements of the effective energy and pile capacity by CAPWAP were presented and compared with the results by GRLWEAP.
