THE consideration of the present value of a mine is of great importance when planning for the operation of a property,, and it is particularly so in the case of mines that have large ore reserves. At various times during the past 15 years, the writer has had occasion to make rather thorough studies of the subject, and has been greatly impressed by certain important points which these studies have brought out, points which, though they may be well known, are often lost track of in the rush to obtain low mining costs and high daily tonnage output. . It is the object of this paper to present briefly, and in a general way, some of these points, and especially those which have to do with the relationship which (1) ore reserves and plant capacity, (2) grade of ore mined, and (3) ore losses in mining, bear to the present value. Present value, sometimes called present worth or actuarial value, means the value today of the future earnings of an enterprise. Great industrial, manu-facturing or railroad enterprises, if properly handled, go on indefinitely and their value is directly dependent on their estimated annual earnings. Mines, or oil properties, on the other hand, have an earning capacity only until the ore or oil is exhausted, and their present value is dependent not only on their annual earnings but also on their life, which is the length of the period over which they can produce at a profit. A mine, or an oil property, is a "wasting asset," while an estab-lished manufacturing business is not, or should not be. In other words, the present value of a mining property. represents a sum of money on which there could be paid from operating profits a determined rate of interest, say 8 per cent., and in addition an amount which, if invested at compound interest as received, would at the end of the life of the mine pay back the present value. In his "Wealth and Income of the American People," Walter Renton Ingalls says: "The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding to the life of the mine."

Equivalent elastic properties of discontinuously jointed rock masses are computed using a non-representative volume element(NRVE) approach within a three dimensional finite element program. Joint persistence, defined as the percentage of a joint plane that is actually occupied by joint material, is used in the NRVE computations as a step towards greater realism in stability analysis of mine openings. Persistence p is also the probability that a segment of a joint plane is occupied by joint material. Computations reveal a threshold phenomenon in jointed rock mass moduli similar to that observed in percolation theory. A rapid decrease in moduli occurs above a critical value pc(about 0.6). A detailed analysis of the well-known solution for stress about a circular opening in isotropic, elastic ground illustrates the effects of joint set orientation, spacing and persistence. Although stable “on average”, joint segment failures reveal a threat to stability and point towards rational design of reinforcement or support of discontinuously jointed rock masses.

Planning of New York’s new subway line dictated the location of shallow underground station caverns and track crossovers. Clear span openings ranging from70 feet to 100 feet and lengths in excess of 1000 feet, coupled with low rock cover ranging from 25 feet to 40 feet required judicious selection of construction methods, equipment, and proper sequencing of the excavation stages. Rock classifications alone could not predict the behavior of the rock mass during construction. A robust design procedure that considered most of the important aspects of rock behavior and elements of shallow tunnel design, minimized the negative impacts of variable geotechnical data. This paper describes the intricacies of the planning and design of the $16 billion Second Avenue Subway with insight into how to overcome the design complexities and construction challenges of the urban underground.

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made. Os processos de redução direta utilizam-se de gases redutores (CO e H2) para redução do ferro e produção do DRI. A geração deste gás se dá através de reforma de metano que pode ser feita em um reformador, ou dentro do reator de redução com o DRI como catalizador. O último caso ocorre nos processos auto reformadores. A cinética da reforma de metano com H2O catalisada por DRI foi estudada em temperaturas entre 875°C e 1050°C. Os resultados mostraram que até conversão de metano de 0,50, a reforma é controlada por reação química catalítica conforme mecanismo proposto por Münster e Grabke(3,4). Acima desta conversão, o mecanismo não foi determinado. O uso de gás com potencial abaixo do limite para carburação (CH4/H2O < 1) resultou em DRI sem carbono. Com gás de potencial igual ou acima do limite, a carburação do DRI ocorreu e no caso do gás similar ao do processo industrial a carburação impediu a reação catalítica de reforma.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

This paper investigates the effects of solids concentration and the addition of Dispersant S40 on the flowability of original and ground limestone slurries. A rotational viscometer with a concentric cylinder geometry and a controlled-stress rheometer with a cone-and-plate geometry were used to characterize the rheological behaviors of limestone slurries. The rheological behavior of original limestone slurries (<100 µm) is transformed through different types of flows with increasing solids concentration. The use of Dispersant S40 can improve the slurry flowability by decreasing viscosity and eliminating Casson yield stress. It is therefore used as a grinding aid for the wet ultrafine grinding of limestone. The rheological behaviors of ground limestone slurries vary with grinding from a starting dilatant flow-ability to a resulting pseudoplastic one with an evident Casson yield stress in combination with a thixotropic character. The appearance of pseudoplastic flowability combining thixotropy is related to the fineness of a ground product and its specific surface area, which are both correlated to solids concentration and the additive amount of Dispersant S40. In addition, the accurate rheological characterization of time-dependent fluids is dependent on the instruments used and operation conditions.

The plant and processing site at Porgera has been built on a levelled mudstone ridge about lkm E of the mine. Excavation of 7xl06m3 of soil and rock was necessary to achieve the required area. The exposed mudstone belongs to the Chico Formation and is weak, sheared and readily breaks down by slaking upon exposure. Tectonic uplift and subsequent erosion have produced the present landscape of narrow bedrock ridges, with deep colluvium in the incised valleys. The deep excavation to a maximum of 60m, has rapidly unloaded the mudstone, and subsequent stress relief has caused rebound and dilation of the material. The processes of pore pressure equilibration, softening, progressive failure and loosening, combine to deteriorate the newly exposed rock mass. The Federal Bureau of Mines has obtained data by differential thermal analysis of the various minerals that represent the nation&apos;s resources in manganese. These data are supported by X-ray diffraction analysis, chemical analysis, mineralography, and optical mineralogy, and provide fundamental information on the response of each mineral to thermal treatment in oxidizing, reducing, and neutral atmospheres. The information can be applied advantage¬ously in the identification of manganese minerals. Its greatest potential value, however, lies in the application of the quantitative data on the reaction temperatures, rates, and products to the more efficient extraction of manganese from U.S. ores. Thermal analysis curves are presented for certain manganese minerals, namely hausmannite, bixbyite, braunite, pyrolusite, lithiophorite, cryptomelane, hollandite, manganite, rhodochrosite, and rhodonite. The original minerals and the products of their thermal decomposition were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis, supplemented by chemical analysis and mineralogical identification.

[The shrinkage of coke after formation is one of the variables that affects the net expansion of the change in both industrial and test ovens. Various test results have been interpreted as indicating that cokes from certain coals shrink to a marked extent and that other cokes show very little shrinkage; out no comprehensive experimental study of the shrinkage of coke after its formation and of the factors influencing this shrinkage has come to the attention of the authors. While investigating the reactivity of cokes made by the BM-AGA method,6/ Reynolds7/ found that granular low-temperature cokes shrink considerably then reheated to higher temperatures. This shrinkage was large enough to influence the behavior of the charge (net expansion or contraction) in a coke oven to a marked extent. Since that time the Bureau of nines has investigated the shrinkage of coke different methods, all of thick had one common objective - the elimination of the effect of other factors, such as swelling in the plastic range, which could either partly or completely mask the shrinkage of the coke. This international case study focuses on the rigorous geotechnical interaction and results of a soil improvement program utilized to mitigate consolidation settlements of over 1.5 m [5.0 ft]. The extreme settlement results from very deep, nearly normally consolidated clay and the required high floor loading of a new Logistics Park near Bogota, Colombia. The general subsurface conditions consist of very soft clay extending to depths beyond the 50 m [164.0 ft] explored. A required 1.2 m [3.9 ft] thick fill combined with high floor loads resulted in an applied areal load of approximately 7 ton/m2 [1300 psf] (equivalent to about 4.5m [15.0 ft] of fill). Langan recommended performing a test section to validate the initial consolidation settlement calculations and evaluate possible optimization of the prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) spacing and length. The test section sizing was designed to accurately represent the stresses at depth of the future structures. Extreme settlements of over 1.5 m [5.0 ft] in the center and large differential settlements of over 0.6 m [2.0 ft] were measured between the center and corners of the test section over a relatively short test time. Discussion on the methodology, instrumentation, measured results and future optimization are presented. The recommended soil improvement varied from the standard approaches typically utilized in the area. PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The project site is immediately north-northwest of the city of Bogota in the Bogota Valley. The site is bordered with, and has historically been, farming land bordered to the south by the El Rosal-Bogotá highway. The overall site encompasses about 570,000 m2 [141.0 acres] of gross area and about 484,000 m2 [119.6 acres] of net buildable area. The warehouse complex will consist of 10 very large warehouses with footprints ranging from about 15,000 m2 [3.7 acres] to 30,000 m2 [7.4 acres]. The total building area is about 210,000 m2 [51.9 acres] with most of the remaining areas being paved principal drives, truck parking or administrative parking. The topography of the site is relatively flat and close to final grade in roadway areas. However, the warehouse floors will be raised about 1.2 m [3.9 ft] (equivalent to about 2 t/m2 [370 psf] considering engineered fill) to allow for truck docking. In addition, the design floor loads are heavy and estimated to be up to 5 t/m2 [930 psf] and equivalent to about 2.5m [8.2 ft] of fill. Geotechnical conditions at the site are very weak at depths of 50 meters [165 ft] or more, with soft compressible clays comprising the majority of the soil profile. The Bogota Valley is composed in some areas of very deep alluvial deposits. These deposits have been classified as an important challenge and limitation to the development of high/heavy structures such as the project in question for many years (Orozco, 2006). Soft clay deposits have been encountered even beyond depths of 100 meters [328 ft] in some regions of the Bogota Valley (Sanz, 1994). Extreme settlements can be expected if extensive and high permanent loads (above preconsolidation stress levels) are supported in these thick alluvial deposits.

The research described in this report is the first phase of a comprehensive program for the development of a characterization for the structural properties of rock masses. The mathematical expression of the characterization is especial&apos; tailored for use in conjunction with modern structural analysis procedures. The objective of the first phase of the project is to determine the feasibility of representing the structural properties of rock masses in terms of the analysis of an appropriate "representative volume" the results of this investigation are described in detail in the body of the report. The current state-of-the-art concerning the understanding and description of the fundamental mechanisms of rock behavior are determined from a survey of existing literature. The development of a representative volume that captures the most important of these mechanisms is described, In order not to unduly obscure the fundamental aspects of this development, the mathematical analysis of the representative volume is limited to plane strain conditions. A subroutine for the numerical evaluation of the proposed model (i.e., the analysis of the representative volume) is presented. The steps necessary for the incorporation of the subroutine directly into existing two-dimensional finite element structural analysis programs are described. Comparisons between the predictions of the proposed characterization and published results of simple laboratory tests are presented and discussed. Finally recommendations are given concerning suggested improvements of the model and the extension of it to the general three-dimensional case.

Mine inspection in Alaska by the Federal mine inspector was somewhat handicapped during 1915,the inspector having to spend a large part of the summer and fall in examining the Matanuska coal field in connection with the designation of the Government reservations and the leasing units in that field. However, in addition to>this work, the mines in southeastern and southwestern Alaska were inspected by both Federal and Territorial inspectors, a considerable number of men near the Federal inspector's officeat Juneau were trained in first aid to the injured and in the use of mine rescue apparatus, the mines of the interior and of Seward Peninsula were inspected by the Territorial inspector, and a suit was brought in the name of the Territorial inspector for the nonreporting of serious accidents under the Territorial inspection law. The work of the Federal inspector was handicapped also by a lack of field assistants. This condition is likely to be serious, as preparations have been made for opening the Matanuska, Bering River, and Nenana coal fields, and a number of permits granting the free use of 10-acre tracts in other fields throughout the Territory have been issued. The need of a comprehensive inspection law and experienced engineers to safeguard the opening of coal mines by operators who are not familiar with coal mining and are using inexperienced help is obvious.

The deformation behaviour of ternary magnesium alloys AJ (Mg-Al-Sr) and AX (Mg-Al-Ca) were investigated in tension as well as compression tests. The samples were deformed at temperatures between 20 and 300 °C and at an initial strain rate of the order 10-4 s 1. The flow stress decreases with increasing temperature. The macroscopic work hardening rate decreases with increasing flow stress and temperature. The stress and temperature dependence of the work hardening rate is a result of the hardening and softening processes. Stress relaxation experiments were performed in order to reveal features of the thermally activated dislocation motion. Internal and effective stress components of the applied stress were estimated. A decrease in the internal stress was observed at elevated temperatures, which indicates recovery process (-es). A more detailed analysis of the estimated values of the activation volume and activation energy helped to interpret the thermally activated processes during plastic deformation. It is concluded that the deformation behaviour of the alloys depends on the activity of non-basal slip that is strongly influenced by temperature.

Determining the change of stress in rock based on measurements of the deformation of a drill hole is a procedure that is increasing in popularity. A closely related procedure involves the applicat10n of this principle to determine the existing stresses in a rock medium, by cutting free (core drilling) an annulus containing the drill hole. In this Bureau of Mines report, expressions are derived from which one can calculate the stress ellipsoid--the three-dimensional change of stress, or the existing three-dimensional stress field, as the case may be. Study of these equations shows that the stress components in three dimensions can be determined by measurements in only two drill holes, and yields general principles that are useful in planning an efficient program of drilling and measurement. Procedures are given for calculating the least squares estimates of the stress components and their standard errors, and for evaluating or comparing calculated values by means of standard statistical inferences.

Este sistema monitora, em tempo real, o eixo vertical e as oscilações nos eixos horizontal e transversal, mesmo com baixas amplitudes. O sistema desenvolvido possibilita a obtenção dos dados com alta precisão, de forma totalmente automática e a realização de pós-tratamento de forma a se obterem valores relativos ao processo de lingotamento e funcionamento do molde.

A desulfurised tailings cover was installed at the Detour Lake Mine in Ontario, Canada, to reduce oxygen penetration into the underlying sulfidic tailings. The cover ranges from one to 1.5 m in thickness and was intended to maintain high water saturation to reduce oxygen diffusion and consume oxygen by oxidation of the residual sulfide minerals. The tailings impoundment was instrumented to measure climatic parameters, water levels and water content profiles within the tailings and single-layer cover. One year of monitoring data was collected. Additional tailings samples were obtained for geotechnical and geochemical characterisation. The average grain size of the cover material was found to be coarser than the underlying tailings. Monitoring also indicated that air entry values of the cover material were lower than the tailings. Numerical modelling was conducted on the cover to predict water content profiles under varying climate conditions together with the depth of oxygen penetration and diffusive oxygen fluxes. Estimates of the diffusion coefficient and kinetic oxidation rates from field data compared well with values obtained by laboratory measurements. Numerical simulations indicate water saturations of less than 85 per cent can be expected under varying climate conditions. Predicted oxygen flux rates through the desulfurised cover over tailings with high acid potential indicate low flux rates reaching these tailings due to either consumption of oxygen by residual sulfur within the cover or saturation of the underlying tailings.
