This paper presents the experimental investigation on the ultimate skin friction of batter piles. The model piles were pushed in medium dense sand deposits at different inclinations up to 30 with respect to the vertical and tested under axial compression loads. The decrease in the total skin resistance with increasing pile inclination can be explained in terms of the reduction of the ave­rage mobilized angle of friction between the pile shaft and sand. The analysis, which takes into account asymmetrical earth pressure distributions around the pile shaft, showed good agreement with experimental results.

Cave propagation is a complex process due to interacting variables such as mine geometry, rock mass heterogeneity and complex structural networks and stress fields. The Ernest Henry sublevel cave (SLC) is directly below an open pit, which provided an opportunity to observe and measure rock mass failure as the cave initiated and propagated through the pit wall. This paper describes interaction between the open pit and SLC as well as rock mass failure mechanisms observed from the start of the SLC to surface breakthrough.Cave propagation and slope failure mechanisms were found to be governed by intermediate structures, while the cave shape was largely controlled by cave-scale faults. The open pit, production-level geometry and production draw strategy were also important factors for cave and subsidence growth. Cave propagation was episodic and asymmetric in shape due to the orientation and relative position of geological structures, combined with the effects of the increasing SLC geometry and drawdown from the underlying production levels. The precursors and failure mechanism of a 2.5 Mt wall collapse are also reviewed in detail.Cave growth was simulated using a 3D, non-linear, discontinuum finite element model coupled with Newtonian Cellular Automata. Although Tantalum is not usually regarded as a precious metal, its pricing structure is very similar to that of Silver. Different from precious metals, Tantalum has only industrial applications and its use is about 1000 metric tons per year. The intrinsic value of Tantalum already in .the past was a driving force for its recycling. Based on these facts the Tantalum industry world-wide is approaching the closed-loop concept of its recycling. A detailed material flow of Tantalum processing as well as recovery of residues and used products will be discussed.

In this report commercial blasting compounds are classified according to their nitroglycerin (or equivalent explosive oil) and ammonium nitrate content as dynamites, gelatins, blasting agents, military explosives, and blasting , accessories. The ingredients and more significant properties of each explosive are tabulated and briefly discussed. Data are summarized from various handbooks, textbooks, and manufacturers' technical data sheets, together with the author's personal experience; however, this report is not intended to be a technical handbook, since it does not deal with blasting techniques. Instead, it seeks to acquaint the reader with the great variety of explosives, available, their advantages and disadvantages, and their general areas of application. Properties discussed are weight strength, cartridge strength, detonation velocity, density, detonation pressure, water resistance, and fume class. The weakness of the strength rating system and the importance of detonation pres- , sure, density, and detonation velocity in rating explosives are discussed. The terms "blasting agent" and "slurry," which are often misused, are defined. Trends indicate that blasting agents (that is, blasting mixtures with none of of the ingredients singly classified as an explosive), particularly high-density slurry blasting agents, will dominate the explosives field in the future.

This report describes a study, conducted jointly by BethEnergy Mines Inc. and the Bureau of Mines, to assess the effects of longwall front abutment loading on various supplemental support materials utilized in a predriven recovery room. The purpose of the predriven recovery room is to reduce longwall equipment transfer time by eliminating the premove preparation associated with conventional recovery methods. In addition, the room provides a large area in which face salvage equipment can maneuver. Results of four recovery-room study areas show the progression and influence of the front abutment on the longwall panel and supports and their subsequent behavior. The best performance (i. e. the support that most facilitated recovery) of support material was achieved through the use of a concrete mixture which had a sand content of 35 percent by volume. The longwall transfer time was reduced by 30 percent which translates to a production advantage of 37,000 raw tons of coal per panel.

A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

This study evaluated spinal loads associated with lifting and hanging heavy mining cable in a variety of postures. This electrical cable can weigh up to 10 kg per metre and is often lifted in restricted spaces in underground coal mines. Seven male subjects performed eight cable lifting and hanging tasks, while trunk kinematic data and trunk muscle electromyograms (EMGs) were obtained. The eight tasks were combinations of four postures (standing, stooping kneeling on one knee, or kneeling on both knees) and two levels of cable load (0 N or 100 N load added to the existing cable weight). An EMG-assisted model was used to calculate forces and moments acting on the lumbar spine. A two-way split-plot ANOVA showed that increased load (p<0.05) and changes in lifting posture (p<0.05) independently affected trunk muscle recruitment and spinal loading. The increase in cable load resulted in higher EMG activity of all trunk muscles and increased axial and lateral bending moments on the spine (p < 0.05). Changes in posture caused more selective adjustments in muscle recruitment and affected the sagittal plane moment (p < 0.05). Despite the more selective nature of trunk EMG changes due to posture, the magnitude of changes in spinal loading was often quite dramatic. However, average compression values exceeded 3400 N for all cable lifting tasks.

A soldagem por brasagem a vácuo promove a união de materiais dissimilares com alto valor agregado. Este trabalho visa estudar a interação química do nitreto de boro hexagonal (h-BN) na interface de ligação brasada do par Kovar®/h-BN. As variáveis de processo são determinantes para formação da junta brasada metalurgicamente estável. O trabalho estuda a molhabilidade do h-BN quando em contato com ligas de adição do sistema eutético Ag-Cu durante a solidificação. Foram conduzidos ensaios no h-BN a fim de caracterizar sua aplicação no sensor de posição do feixe de elétrons (BPM) do projeto do Sirius, e as propriedades que influenciam o seu processamento durante a brasagem, como coeficiente de expansão térmica e molhabilidade superficial. Os ensaios de brasagem com a liga Ag-Cu-4,5Ti, mostraram boa molhabilidade e espalhamento na superfície, favorecendo a formação da junta sem descontinuidades. As reações na interface são complexas no sentido de formação de novas fases e intermetálicos e, influenciadas pela seleção dos materiais, que possuem diferentes temperaturas de fusão e coeficientes de expansão térmica. Os resultados indicam que a seleção da liga com Ti, que é o elemento de ativação, promove a interação na superfície do h-BN com os demais materiais da junta.

The vapor-phase section of the Coal Hydrogenation Demonstration Plant at Louisiana, Mo., was operated for the first time in April 1949. The run lasted only 10 days because of time limitation (pending plant dedication in May) and the small amount of charging stock available. The primary purpose of the operation was to break in and determine the operability of the equipment and to supplement the operators&apos; classroom training with actual practice by operating the plant under mild conditions. A secondary aim was to obtain data on the hydrogenation of petroleum oil and lignite tar distillate at approximately 10,000 p.s.i. while making gasoline and Diesel fuel oil. Although the operations were carried out under conditions considerably below those used in the plant design, a great deal of experience and data was obtained. As it is not feasible at this time to conduct further vapor-phase operations on similar stocks, this report has been prepared to present and summarize the data obtained through this operation.

The objectives of this investigation were to develop a laboratory procedure in which core discing could be produced under known (and variable) stress conditions, and to study the discing characteristics of several fypes of rock. Discing of rock cores refers to the formation of discs or wafers of relatively uniform thickness which fracture or rupture on surfaces approximately *Fracture is a type of failure in which there is a complete loss of cohesion and fresh surfaces are created. Rupture is a type of failure in which there Is only a partial loss of cohesion. normal to the axis to the core (see Fig. 1). Usually the surfaces of the discs are concave-convex with the concave side toward the collar of the hole. The surface of the fractured discs are like those created by a tension failure (or possibly a shear failure with virtually no normal compressive stress). This phenomenon has been observed by a number of investigators1-5 in the course of diamond drilling in underground mines, especially in areas suspected of being under high stress. The state of stress in the core required to produce discing is not exactly known. Tranter and craggs6 theoretically investigated the stress distribution in an infinite cylinder, subjected to hydrostatic pressure, minus p, from z = 0 to z = 8 and unloaded from z = 0 to z = 8, Fig. 2. The exact solution to this problem shows that a tensile stress develops in the loaded region near z = 0 with the greatest tensile stress on the axis of the cylinder. A tensile stress also developed on the surface of the cylinder at a point just outside of the loaded zone. Jaeger and Cook3 experimentally investigated the discing mechanism by biaxially loading cores in a pressure jacket sealed at the ends by O-rings. According to the Tranter and Craggs theory it would be expected that failure should occur at the pressure discontinuity at the O-rings. The experimental results showed that if the specimen was unjacketed it broke at random points within the pressurized zone and at a pressure somewhat greater than the tensile strength of the specimen, presumably due to the development of a

Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito do nióbio e do vanádio no aço estrutural, conforme norma brasileira NBR 7007 AR 415, quando laminado a quente a diferentes temperaturas de reaquecimento, nos resultados de limite de escoamento, limite de resistência e alongamento. Os demais parâmetros de processo que influenciam as propriedades mecânicas dos aços como temperatura e taxa de deformação de cada passe, temperatura de acabamento e taxa de resfriamento foram controlados e considerados constantes. Os resultados do ensaio de tração mostraram que os limites de escoamento e resistência da corrida com vanádio foram bem superiores aos obtidos da corrida com nióbio. O alongamento, em contrapartida, foi reduzido na corrida com vanádio, mas acima do valor mínimo especificado pela norma. Além disso, na corrida com nióbio, foi observado aumento das tensões de escoamento e resistência com o aumento da temperatura de reaquecimento de tarugos. Esses resultados propiciam uma maior flexibilidade da usina em trabalhar com os dois tipos de liga dependendo das condições de mercado e operacionais.

All pigments and extenders or fillers whether organic or inorganic fall into the following broad general classes: I. Colored II.-White III. Black IV. Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

"El presente estudio señala la comparación entre la enargita-ortorrómbica y la luzonita tetragonal como minerales pertenecientes al grupo de los sulfuros. Sin embargo, luego de un riguroso estudio se comprobó que estos minerales no son similares pues no tienen un sistema ontorrómbico. Los minerales que cristalizan en la misma estructura que la luzonita famatinita tienen una celda unitaria doble y son la calcopirita, estanita y otros. Mientras que la tetraedrita-tennantita cristaliza en la estructura de la esfalerita con celda unitaria. A esto, se suma la dificultad de flotación que presenta la luzonita en comparación con la enargita debido al contenido en ciertos elementos en la luzonita. Finalmente se describen propiedades de ambos minerales y se agrega estudios sobre los derivados de las mallas cristalinas, polimorfismo entre el tipo wurtzita y esfalerita y flotación, respectivamente."

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension is being constructed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The tunnel has shallow ground cover and mixed-face conditions and passes underneath the SkyTrain and MARTA stations and airport terminal buildings. It includes a twin tube Bifurcation with a span of over 45 feet and ground cover of 12 feet. A flat roof is being constructed at the Bifurcation to maximize rock cover and minimize surface settlements. This paper focuses on design and construction challenges for the Bifurcation and tunneling beneath the world’s busiest airport, while minimizing impacts to operations.

the leaching of near-by rocks, had had no other result than to bring out from obscurity three certain features of practical lmport, all the labor of that controversy would have been well expended. These three points are : (1) a clear distinction between the vadose and the profound zones; (2) a determination of the manner in which the latter may be invaded by conditions of the former; and (3) an establishment of the general truth of the lateral-secretion theory when vadose conditions prevail, and of the. ascension-theory under profound conditions. In the practical consideration. of ore-deposits these generalizations are fundamental. Their wider application must be productive of great industrial advantages. Of first importance in the broader scientific survey of ore-genesis is the recognition of a sharp distinction between vadose and profound conditions. To many who listened to Professor Posepny&apos;s remarkable paper, read at the Chicago session of the Institute during the Columbian Exposition in 1893, this seemed, as Dr. S. F. Emmons has already observed, its most valuable and suggestive feature. Notwithstanding Posepny&apos;s implications to the contrary, and his vigorous berating of Sandberger&apos;s views, the immediate and lasting .effect of the . argument was really to strengthen greatly Sandberger&apos;s position. For it completely and sharply separated the lateral-secretionists from the ascensionists, raising the sphere of the former bodily above the line of permanent water-level and at the same time confining .the sphere of the latter to regions below that horizon. A little later, Professor Van Rise showed in some detail how meteoric waters may deeply invade the profound zone and carry vadose conditions into it. The zonal limitations of two great and apparently opposed agencies being thus definitely fixed, it is found that neither of the theories based thereon is susceptible of general application. If the generalizations of the lateral-secretionist be propounded solely for vadose conditions, we are able to agree with all of his more-important contentions; while there is general acquiescence in the views of the ascensionist if their application be restricted to the profound zone. As the chief field of the gold dredging industry in Otago is the district traversed by the Molyneux River (called above Cromwell the Clutha) and its tributaries, a brief reference to the geology of that region and the origin of its alluvial gold will not be out of place. The prevailing rocks are metamorphic schists, chiefly mica and quartz schists, pr.obably of Silurian age. Though these rocks do not contain many payable quartz reefs, gold appears to be distributed in small quantities all through them,chiefly associated with the quartz lamime and lenses. The river drift, however, contains numerous pebbles of quartzite, quartzoze conglomerate, and fme-grained slate. Seeing that these rocks are hardly known to occur in situ within the watershedof the Molyneux River, though Devonian and carboniferous rocks of similar character occur to the north-east and south-west, it seems probable that the schists were at one time overlaid by carboniferous and Devonian rocks, and that these have been removed by denuding agencies. Be this as it may, it is certain that the schists themselves have been greatly eroded by the action both of water and of ice, and that the resulting drifts have themselves, in many cases, been sorted and re-assorted by the same agents.Consequently the drifts are very varied in character and often developed on a grand scale. In geological age they vary from Early Tertiary (though some may be older) to Recent.

"Tungsten skarn deposits on the Clea property in the Selwyn Mountains, Y. T., are related genetically to a quartz monzonite stock, about 500 metres in diameter at the surface. Lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are metamorphosed for a distance of 3 km from the stock. Tungsten-bearing skarn mineralization within the altered sedimentary rocks is of two types: sulphide-rich pods and calc-silicate beds. The most significant scheelite concentration is in calc-silicate beds near or adjacent to the quartz monzonite stock. Discordant K-Ar and Rb-Sr isotopic dates indicate that the stock is probably of early Late Cretaceous age, 94 Ma or slightly older, and that it cooled slowly. High initial 87Srl86Sr ratios and disequilibrium relationships between K-jeldspar phenocrysts and groundmass minerals in the porphyritic phase of the granitic rock , and between different granitic rock specimens, indicate contamination of crystallizing magma by old sialic continental crust which extends westward under the Selwyn Basin.This study is significant to regional tungsten exploration. Granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits, in this part of the Canadian Cordillera at least, appear to have specific isotope characteristics that indicate they were generated at a specific time and in a particular way.IntroductionThe Clea tungsten skarn property (Fig. I) is owned by Canex Placer Limited, and lies in the Selwyn Mountains (Bostock, 1948) near the eastern margin of the Selwyn Basin (Wheeler and Gabrielse, 1972), Yukon Territory. The property covers a 20-square-mile area centered near latitude 62°47 &apos; north and longitude 129°52&apos; west, and is accessible by helicopter. An airstrip and the terminus of a summer-use gravel road at MacMillan Pass, Yukon, are about 20 miles to the northnorthwest.This paper deals mainly with the geochronemetry of granitic rocks from a stock associated with tungsten mineralization on the Clea property. We show that these rocks have specific characteristics that not only define the genesis of this stock, but also have significance for regional tungsten exploration around plutons in the Canadian Cordillera."

As part of an ongoing study to determine how the wear of mining tools affects dust generation, the Bureau of Mines has measured bit tempera-ture rise during cutting of abrasive rock. Radial bit wear-flat tem-peratures generated by linear cutting in Berea Sandstone were measured as a function of cutting depth and speed. Depths of cut (DOC) were 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in, and cutting speeds were 10, 40, and 80 in/s, respectively. Temperature sensing was accomplished by emplacement of a miniature thermocouple into the center of the wear flat. Temperatures observed ranged from 2000 to 5000 C. Correlation between depth and temperature was weak. Temperature increased linearly with speed at 1/2-in DOC, but data taken at 1/8-and 1/4-in DOC produced inconclusive results. The results indicated that at least for deeper cuts (1/2 in), bit temperature, and therefore wear, can be reduced by lowering the cutting speed.
