The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to characterize longwall gob loading under bump-prone geologic conditions. Bureau-designed stress meters were installed in the floor rock beneath two longwall panels and coal pillars in the gate road between them. Gob and gate road pillar stress was monitored continuously by a state-of-the-art data acquisition system. The timing of the final destruction of the abutment pillar's load-bearing core was optimal, since the pillar is located between two gob areas and no longer of significant importance for ground control. Maximum stress was observed immediately in front of the longwall face, and this pressure quickly dropped as the face moved past the instruments. The center of the longwall panels regained significant overburden load, while the instruments located less than 100 ft from the edge of the panel showed little or no increase in pressure due to gob reloading.

The Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine concentrations of toxic gases and liquids, and smoke-particle diameters and diameter-concentrations evolved during degradation of PVC-derived brattice with and without nylon-woven fabrics, fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, and other mine materials. The samples were exposed in a 20-L chamber at temperatures of 1500 to 4500 C, with a chamber airflow of 10 L/min; 27.3 cm3/s of which was directed into a submicrometer-particle detector-analyzer. During the degradation of PVC-derived brattice, large concentrations of hydrogen chloride (TLV, 5 ppm; STEL, 100 ppm) evolved at a temperature as low as 2000 C. The minimum toxic load of 3.1 mg or 40 ppm in 50 L of dilution air, with O.l~g weight loss, may be reached at a mine face with 314,000 L of dilution air, at the 5th min, during which less than 1 kg of brattice undergoes combustion. Fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, pine wood dust, and coal dust showed small concentrations of carbon monoxide evolving during early stages of combustion. Hydrogen cyanide gas evolved from the PVC-derived, nylon-reinforced brattice; at a later stage of combustion, large concentrations pf carbon monoxide and dense smoke evolved from all PVC-derived brattices. Experiments to characterize smoke particles showed that marked differences exist in particle diameter-concentrations among the materials.

Persons interested in th_e study of petroleum and allied substances have long felt the need of a bibliographic index to the literature. This bibliography, which is intended to be the first elf a yearly series, has been compiled by the petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines with a view to satisfying this need. The references include only the more noteworthy writings that appeared during the year 191.5 in both ·the United States and foreign countries. Only patents plainly applicable to the industries in point have been included, although, of course, a close scrutiny of the great volume of patent literature might reveal many other patents of possible value. The references are arranged according to the subject classification on pages 3 to 11. This classification, which is to be followed in the succeeding bibliographies of this series, is offered as a guide for further study and classification of the pertinent literature.

"I think that you will agree with me that we have an excellent program planned for the next three days, comprising various interesting and educational subjects by authors of prominence, which will be of keen interest to all of us in the coal industry. "The Program Committee, chairmanned by John Peperakis, has done an excellent job in securing this very splendid talent for our convention. "I would like to say a word as to the, condition of the coal industry in our part of the country as well as elsewhere. I believe we can look at it with more optimism than in the past several years, particularly in the state of Colorado, with which I am more familiar. "Annual coal production in Colorado gradually dropped from around 12 million tons during the years of World War I to as low as 8 million tons during the last war, and to less than 3 million tons in the year of 1954. We believe that it touched bottom that year, as in 1955 the state production went up again to nearly 3,400,000 tons, equivalent to an increase of 15%. As you know, the national increase in bituminous coal production for the year of 1955 was roughly 2000 over 1954. "The national increase for the first two months of 1956 over the same period of 1955 is approximately 2100. Colorado's production is running around 1000 over the comparable period of last year, and the 5 states represented by our Institute came up with a nice increase in 1955 over 1954 of 1000. "Figures on the increase so, far in 1956 for this group of states are not readily available, but I fully believe that. our industry locally, as well as nationally, is now starting out on a steady rise despite the fanfare of nuclear energy and its more glamorous competitor, solar energy. Many authorities tell us that real competition from these sources is a long way off and that the atomic energy program will consume far more coal than is displaced by nuclear power. New Trade Status for Mainland China--On January 24, the Congress approved a most-favored-nation trade status with Mainland China for both imports and exports. A Presidential Proclamation had been issued earlier in anticipation of the Congressional action. Import duties on such commodities as tungsten, mercury, and antimony are automatically decreased. Defense Production Act Extended--The Defense Production Act of 1950 was extended 60 days to March 28, 1980. The provision for the usual 2-year extension of the Act is reportedly included in an omnibus energy bill that is tied up in committee. The Act under Title III provides for the expansion of productive capacity and supply and, more specifically, it gives priority to defense contracting where defense and non-defense interests conflict

At the Copper 2016 conference in Kobe, Japan, Outotec introduced a vision for the year 2020, wherein smelting would make use of four digital cornerstones: intelligent instruments, advanced process control, improved information management and transparency of and access to data. Since then, this vision coined the phrase “Fully Automated Smelter” with the mission promising a concept where no manual actions from human operators would be needed during normal smelter operations. Replacing repetitive physical work, collection and analysis of everyday production data has a great potential for further automation and will provide productive ways to improve efficiency and safety of smelters in the future. Therefore, a lot of emphasis has been put into developing solutions to automate these tasks and to move people out of harm’s way. A lot of new equipment, systems and optimization tools are under development. In addition, a lot of effort is going into developing dynamic process models and advanced control systems to interface with the plant automation systems. The goal is to integrate all these concepts to meet Outotec’s Fully Automated Smelter vision. This paper will cover these latest achievements toward this vision and introduce the near-future of digital smelting. INTRODUCTION As is well known already, the humankind is currently experiencing a change, extent of which is broadly studied by the governmental, educational and industrial institutions and parties. The wellbeing and quality of life have traditionally been improved alongside the developments in industrial production, which is now about to enter its fourth revolution. Therefore, the current change is often described as fourth industrial revolution, or industry 4.0 (or industrie 4.0, as named by Acatech, 2013) and can be considered anything from small incremental development to a ground-breaking global reset that will affect everyone’s lives. Many seem to agree, that the scale of change will indeed be big, even significantly bigger than the three industrial revolutions before it (Pellini, Weyrauch, Malho & Carden, 2019; Geissbauer, Vedso & Schrauf, 2016; Jansson, Bjorklund, Lahtinen, Heinonen, Jafs & Fagerlund, 2016).

"Current trends, motivated by fossil fuel dependence and unprecedented greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, show lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) emerging as a competitive energy storage technology due to higher power and energy densities compared to Pb-acid and Ni-metal hydride chemistries. These trends may be of concern, however, as environmental impacts are not well understood for either the LIB itself, or for the nanoparticles consumed or released during the battery's production, use, or end-of-life. This study combines economic modeling, dynamic material flow analysis, and fundamental material characterization methods in order to quantify some of the economic and environmental trade-offs for LIBs at their end-of-life. As expected, results show that as chemistries transition from Li-Co based cathodes to Li based Fe, Mn, and S cathodes, LIB recovery value correlates to the value of the raw materials used. These initial results aim to inform collection policies being proposed currently as well as enable future deployment of novel recycling techniques.IntroductionGlobal fossil fuel dependence and unprecedented GHG emissions have led to increasing attention on energy alternatives, for both electricity production and personal transportation. However, development of renewable energy systems is contingent on concurrent technological development of energy storage systems, primarily batteries used for power grid load-leveling, renewable energy storage, and hybrid and battery electric vehicles. In this sector, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are emerging as a competitive technology due to higher power and energy densities compared to lead-acid and nickelmetal hydride chemistries[!]. LIBs represent close to 20% of the total rechargeable battery market and 75% of the portable rechargeable battery market, which is the fastest growing segment of the rechargeable battery market, with a 20% global growth in 2008 [2].This surge in production ofLIBs indicates a looming waste problem; total waste from Li-ion batteries has likely grown substantially from the 500 metric tons estimated in 2003 [3]. Figure IA shows the substantial increase in world-wide lithium production that has occurred in the last several decades with batteries making up the largest share of applications (Figure lB). California and New York state legislators have attempted to proactively address this looming waste by issuing diposal bans on rechargeable batteries in their states[4, 5]. However, quantification of the costs involved in collection, transportation, and processing of these materials has not been examined in depth."

Introduction The preparation of the following paper has been undertaken in the belief that a description of the development methods and equipment used at Lake Shore, at the present time, will prove of general ? interest. Working depths of nearly a mile and a half in shaft sinking and of more than one mile for stoping operations have imposed problems not encountered at shallower horizons. Among the problems contributing to the difficulty of mining at extreme depths might be mentioned: Rock pressures Ventilation Hoisting Shorter work period at the face Geological considerations In the main, the effects of these factors add to the difficulty of mining at depth, but it is not entirely true to say that each must necessarily become more pronounced as mining operations proceed to greater depths. Corrective measures may, in some cases, retard the effect and in others may even relieve some of the difficulty. It is proposed here to discuss these features in the light of the experience at Lake Shore, and to present, in some detail, the current practice in shaft sinking and in driving ore and waste passes, raises, drifts and cross-cuts.

"This paper summarizes the results of numerical studies on drift stability in moderately jointed rock masses. It investigates the relative pertinence of geomechanical factors such as joint orientation, spacing and stress regime. This is undertaken using a distinct element model and a series of parametric studies. IntroductionIn evaluating the stability of drifts in jointed rock, it is often necessary to compromise by employing models that capture the complexity of the rock mass, but which are still simple enough to allow for their routine implementation. The distinct element method can arguably provide an eloquent method to accomplish this. This paper explores the applicability of the method by means of a parametric study aiming to identify the dominant factors that influence the stability of drifts in moderately jointed rock. To this end a commercially available 2D distinct element numerical model was used. A series of techniques are presented in an effort to quantify the results of any instability predicted by the model.This paper also demonstrates a case study where a 3D joint network model was integrated into the distinct analysis software package. The advantages, as well as the current limitations of this approach, are discussed."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating longwall panel and gate road layouts to increase coal recovery and reduce multiple-seam interactive problems. This report presents design practices for longwall mining multiple seams to provide mine planners and operators with practical guidelines for designing productive longwall mines. Key aspects of mine design that control longwall interactions are examined, including sequencing of seams, design of gate road pillars, and orientation of gate roads and longwall panels. Theories that describe stress transfer between multiple scams and the mechanics of interaction are addressed in relation to geology. Common longwall designs were further investigated using a boundary element model, MULSIM/NL. The model provided insight into relative stress transfer and distribution that occurs between longwall operations in multiple seams. Findings from the model show that (1) a longwall panel should be mined from the gob to the solid coal of an overlying mine, because the stress concentrations are lower; the approach angle should be kept under 30°; and (2) when mining in descending order, superpositioning gate roads usually produces the worst stress condition. To prevent this, the overlying isolated gate roads should be positioned from the centerline toward the headgate side of the underlying panel.

South African is a repository of significant deposits of a variety of minerals. The Citigroup confirms this assertion with an estimate of in-situ valuation of US$2.5 Trillion. The mining sector plays an important role in the South African economy. In addition to the mineral resource base South Africa has other comparative advantages. Firstly, South Africa retains major mining companies that participate globally, including Anglo American, Goldfields and De Beers. Their global involvement offers much to the local mining sector and the broader economy. Secondly, government established research councils. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) was established to manage the Geological Survey of South Africa, including the reduction of geo-scientific investment risk. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) promotes industrial development, including mining technology development. Mintek undertakes mineral research from mineral examination of ores, to extraction and refining technologies and manufacture of end products. Thirdly, South African universities teach and conduct research along the mineral value chain. They have increased their minerals graduates? capacity, thus advancing knowledge and skills. Knowledge and technical progress are behind productivity growth and emergence of competitive advantage. The research and development (R&D) capabilities of industry, science councils and universities, working in unison, will enhance the competitiveness of the South African mining industry. The National System of Innovation (NSI) requires multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. Key R&D elements, including skills and expertise, funding and facilities, must be available to implement a long-term national strategy or programme. Improved international collaboration and partnerships between government, academia and industry driven human resource development (HRD), ultimately develop the critical mass for inter-generational skills requirements. This trend requires an expansion of research collaboration programmes. Decisions involving investments and collaborative actions pertaining to R&D in the sector necessitate an analysis of the South African mineral value chain R&D capability. This paper analyses the evolution of R&D capability from exploration to refining, tertiary education, science councils and industry. The political economy of the evolution of this capability is analyzed in relation to the central role that the South African government plays in creating an appropriate supporting environment and related initiatives to enhance R&D and innovation. Se desarrollaron materiales compuestos de matriz polimérica para toberas en cohetes; con dos zonas: una térmica para soportar elevadas temperaturas de combustión y una estructural que resista los esfuerzos generados. La zona térmica se elaboró con materiales de comportamiento ablativo, probados a temperaturas de hasta 2950°C durante dos minutos, los cuales fueron reforzados con polvo cerámico y/o subproducto de la industria siderúrgica (cerámico 2). Con base en los resultados obtenidos del comportamiento de térmico y de conductividad térmica del material ablativo, se construyó la zona estructural en materiales compuestos fibroreforzados (vidrio y carbono) con matriz polimérica. Los moldes se diseñaron en SolidWorks y se fabricaron por prototipado en ABS rápido y se elaboraron machos disgregables en poliuretano. En la zona térmica se usó un procedimiento de vaciado con vibración con diferentes tipos de matrices (poliéster, vinilester, caucho silicona) y de laminación para la zona estructural. Se evaluó el desempeño mediante simulación de las condiciones reales de operación mediante llama de oxicorte y quemador de ACPM, observando el efecto en la pérdida de peso, espesor, diferencial de temperatura, cambio de propiedades mecánicas, etc.; encontrándose un positivo comportamiento del sistema con matriz de resina vinilester reforzado con polvo cerámico 1 y buenos resultados con cerámico 2, así como una estabilidad en la zona estructural construida con fibras de vidrio y carbono. Diagrams of pc-pH for the complex ions concentration and pH value and -g- for activity coefficient and ionic strength ln±MnSOI4had been drew based on the thermodynamic principle of coordination chemistry and combined with Pitzer theory at 298.15K. The diagram of -g- indicated that -gincreased sharply from 0.0000 up to 1.2147 when I changed from 0.00 ln±MnSOIln4±MnSO4to 0.09; The increase of -gbecame slowly when I was more than 1.00 and less than 1.69; kept still when I ln±MnSOln4-g±MnSO4was more than 2.25 and less than 4.00. Diagrams of pc-pH illustrated that the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) increased with the increase of I, the pc increased from 6.5 to 5.5 when I increased from 0.00 to 4.00; The pH of the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) increased with the increase of I, the pH increased from 11.80 to 12.76 when I increased from 0.00 to 2.89, the pH kept still when I (I was less than 4.0) increased. There is single function relationship between the minimum solubility of Mn(OH)2(s) and relevant pH in different I.

A program to investigate the effects of hardened washers on the uniformity of roof bolt tension and the resulting ground control in an underground mine was carried out. The complete roof bolt installation and roof bolt loads, mine convergence, and bed separation were monitored for a period of five months. The results show no evidence to support or refute the theory that mechanical roof bolts offer better support when they are installed with a high uniformity of tension. Also shown is the fact that if the bolts are installed with a maximum deviation from the mean torque of ±15% the addition of hardened washers significantly improved the uniformity of the installed tensions in the roof bolts.

A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple-hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosives charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g. velocity, attenuation, pulse), or by backcalculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties are backcalculating individual pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shown to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included and additional verifications with field results are required.

The City of Sydney is currently investing in a number of infrastructure projects that require tunnel excavations within the Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone. It is generally accepted that this formation has high residual stresses of ‘tectonic’ origin, so much so that these stresses have been implicated in a number of well-known failures and problems for tunnelling. These include failure of ‘roof beams’ comprising discrete beds in the crown of tunnel excavations; stress-induced spalling and ‘slabbing’ of tunnel walls; shear displacement between beds causing the failure of rock bolts; strain in adjacent infrastructure and, the necessity for re-grouting of high conductivity fractures due to stress relief dilation after excavation. Whilst there is an extensive published database of in situ stress measurements comprising ‘hydrofrac’, ‘over-coring’ and ‘slotter’ stress measurements, these data indicate a considerable spread of results. The traditional approach to interpreting this data has been to attempt to fit linear correlations to stress versus depth data, based on personal experience and ‘back-analysis’ of monitoring data during construction. However, there are a number of such correlations in the literature and there is divergence of opinion regarding the assessment of ‘background’ in situ stress and appropriate upper and lower bound values for design. This paper provides a brief review of the published data; suggestions on an alternative ‘risk-based approach’ to assigning in situ stresses for design; and, proposals on how in situ stress tests may be conducted in future to improve the quality of the database available to designers.CITATION:Macklin, S, McKay, G and Erskine, M, 2014. This report presents a literature review conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The review summarizes what has been learned from recent empirical studies of the relationship between mine safety and characteristics of miners, mine management, and mining companies. The review is based on literature published in the United States during the period from 1976 to 1988. In addition to summarizing the empirical findings, this report discusses the implications and limitations of these studies, and gives recommendations for improving mine safety. An annotated bibliography section appears in the appendix.
