Safety rules for installing and using electrical equipment in and about coal mines covered in this information circular supersede those previously included in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 514, issued in 1952. This revision brings these rules up to date and more nearly in line with present operating and safety practices in the industry. The rules are intended to supplement existing Federal and State regulations, and no provision shall be construed to oppose or supersede any provisions of the Federal Mine Safety Codes, the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, or the mining laws of any State. The rules were designed to permit progress, such as application of new or improved materials and equipment or use of new practices where these materials, equipment, or practices retain or improve the level of safety established by these requirements. It is hoped that they will fill the need for a concise edition for mine electricians and electrical engineers, especially those who do not have ready access to more detailed rules or codes.

It is proposed that a waste rock dump be constructed on slopes consisting of soft colluvium and weathered Chim Formation mudstone at the Porgera Gold Mine, in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Geolog- ical, geomorphological and geophysical investigations were conducted in support of geotechnical studies to assess the physical character of the 6km2 site. Geomorphological studies focused on the extent and nature of colluvium cover and landslide activity. Detailed ground traverse mapping resulted in classification and delineation of eight terrains and seven material types. Seismic refraction and resistivity profiling, combined with drilling, provided subsurface data. Results were presented as standard profiles, coloured contoured sections and plans. Subsurface features, including deep colluvial channels, buried cliffs, slump blocks and buried alluvial channels, were identified. Results of the combined investigations allowed designers to model the colluvium/ bedrock surface and identify critical areas of deep, mobile colluvium and weak bedrock. A design approach was developed which accounted for the morphology of landslide systems and distribution of colluvium types.

This paper describes the use of dynamic scheduling and discrete event control to provide coordinated control of multiple automated vehicles. In the past decade there have been significant advances in the field of robotics for underground mining. As this trend progresses toward a realization of a completely automated underground mine the need for a central control system, capable of providing coordination for multiple vehicles in a semistructured environment, becomes more evident. In the past year general research into multi-robot coordination has been applied to the underground mining scenario and demonstrated in a scaled model underground mine in a laboratory setting. This system shows significant potential to be adopted into a full-scale implementation for mine wide automation.

"Stringent environmental performance criteria and regulations, and the desire to minimize water use have made membrane-based treatment and separation processes an attractive option. This has lead to many advances in all aspects of the technology. Membrane separation processes have found application in sea water desalination, brackish water treatment, decontamination of ground water, and wastewater treatment. Development of membranes with better resistance to harsh feed conditions has created new opportunities for the broader application of membrane separation technologies to mineral processing streams. There are examples in mineral processing operations, including treatment of acidic drainage, pre-concentration of pregnant leaching solution in heap leaching operations, separation of acids and metals from waste streams and intermediate process streams, as well as gold and cyanide recovery from a heap leaching operation. This paper provides a brief overview of membrane technology principles, followed by a discussion of current membrane technology applications relevant to the mining and mineral processing industry. The paper further explores the potential for the application of membrane separation as an integrated component in mineral processing operations.INTRODUCTION Increased regulatory pressures, emphasis on water conservation, and scarcity of water in arid regions have resulted in substantial changes in industrial practices in recent years. As a result, many industries have become more open to adopting innovative technologies such as membrane separation. The mining industry, which is typically very conservative, has adopted membrane separation as an effective end-of-pipe solution for effluent and acidic drainage (AD) treatment; however, its use as an integrated component in plant operations has progressed more slowly. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations coupled with the desire for low- and zero-discharge operations, the use of membrane separation technology for achieving acceptable environmental performance may be unavoidable in the future. The relatively small footprint requirement, versatility, and modular construction of membrane separation units facilitate their introduction into existing processes with a suitable feed stream. Membrane separation is not a stand-alone process that provides the ultimate solution to water and wastewater treatment; however, it can often be economically added to conventional waste treatment plants to increase throughput and/or decrease contaminant output (Mortazavi, 2008). Although membrane separation technology has become an established separation technique that is widely used in drinking water production and other industries, it is still considered an emerging technology within the mining and mineral processing industry. This technology offers many potential benefits such as clean water recovery from wastewater, significant reduction of volume requiring conventional treatment, decreased usage of reagents, and acid recovery, all of which lead to increased treatment efficiencies and lower reagent consumption. This could translate to smaller and more efficient plants with lower capital and operating costs and lower environmental impacts. Plant expansion may be facilitated by incorporating a membrane separation unit operation in order to utilize existing treatment systems at higher throughputs."

INTRODUCTION A 100 ft long, 20 ft high and 18 ft wide NATM tunnel was excavated through grouted clean sands beneath a busy city street, including a variety of existing utility lines. The new tunnel associated with a hospital expansion will serve as a pedestrian tunnel connecting a parking structure with a new hospital facility. Tunnel construction started on December 15, 2005 when drilling for the grouting program started and was completed on May 26, 2006 when the tunnel final lining was completed. The tunnel was constructed by Kiewit Construction Company as a tunnel subcontractor to The Christman Company who is constructing the hospital facility for Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Michigan. URS was the project designer. GallZeidler Consultants, LLC were the contractor’s NATM consultant. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Michigan Street Pedestrian Tunnel is a component of the Michigan Street Development located along the north side of Michigan Street NE between Coit Avenue NE and North Division Avenue in the downtown area of the Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Michigan Street Development includes a parking deck and four new towers to be constructed over the proposed parking deck. The tower planned furthest east is being developed by Spectrum Health as the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavillion. The purpose of the pedestrian tunnel is to connect the proposed Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavillion with the future Spectrum building to be located on the south side of Michigan Street NE. The southern end of the tunnel was constructed with a bulkhead until the future Spectrum building is constructed at which time interconnection will be required. The tunnel site plan and profile are shown in Figure 1, Site Plan, and Figure 2, Tunnel Profile. Several challenges were faced during the design and construction of the Michigan Street Pedestrian Tunnel. These challenges included compressed design and construction schedule, maintenance of traffic and protection of old underground utilities. The tunnel was being constructed as part of the Michigan Street Development and coordination with other concurrent construction activities was required. The tunnel was constructed within a specified window of time to allow other associated construction activities to take place without compromising the overall project schedule. The design started in June 2005 and construction was completed by June 2006.

"Abstract — The Detour Lake gold deposit is located within the northwestern limit of the Archean Abitibi Subprovince of the Superior Province. Mineralized zones are hosted by a sequence of pillowed and massive flows, hyaloclastite units, and altered ultramafic rocks, and are commonly oriented parallel to a series of high-strain zones that are co-planar to the regional-scale Sunday Lake Deformation Zone. Early in its kinematic history, the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone placed older (2.72 Ga) volcanic rocks of the Detour Lake Formation over younger (2.70 Ga) sedimentary rocks of the Caopatina assemblage. Gold mineralization is also parallel to the position of a laterally persistent siliceous rock unit, the 2.725 Ga ‘Chert Marker Horizon.’ The Chert Marker Horizon coincides with the boundary between the mafic-dominated upper Detour Lake Formation and the ultramafic-dominated lower Detour Lake Formation. Stratigraphic and geochronological data suggest that the Chert Marker Horizon is a deformed felsic volcaniclastic unit. At a cut-off of 0.6 g/t Au, the Detour Lake deposit contains 17.26 million ounces of Au within 445.9 million tonnes of rock grading 1.20 g/t Au. Gold occurs in shear-hosted and extensional vein arrays within rocks of the upper and lower Detour Lake Formation and within the Chert Marker Horizon. The Detour Lake deposit has many of the characteristics of a greenstone-hosted, quartz-carbonate vein deposit; its very large size may be attributed to large-scale rheological controls resulting in the formation of dilatant sites in permissive rock units. © 2012 Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. A new methodology of an experimental-analytical approach has been developed. It is used in building an information geomechanic monitoring system for the modeling of geomechanic processes during coal seam working. The approach synthesizes experimental (in-situ) measurements of rock pressure manifestation in separate points, methods of numerical modeling of processes on rock boundaries with coal, and a seam analytical calculation of rock mass in a spatial strained state. One of the realizations of this approach is the developed theory and calculation method of adjoining rock surface shift (overhang) formation during underground working of sheet deposits and of rock mass geomechanic state determination. There are description algorithms of cavity configurations with broken lengths of faces during underground working of useful mineral sheet deposits. These algorithms have been used in computer modeling of formations of adjoining rock surface overhangs and abutment pressure upon rock mass in the area of coal faces with irrectilinear longwalls. Peculiarities of surfaces shifts and stress allocation are established for different face schemes. The use of theory and methods alloww working out techniques of automatic control to receive processing algorithms of RPM measurement results and calculate geomechanic situations within panels in the process of planning and development as well as during mining, i.e., to carry out long-term prediction, in-line control, and short-term prediction of rock pressure manifestations.

Although the explosion-fatality record for the fiscal year 1944 showed considerable improvement over those of the preceding 4 years, it is still fur from creditable, and the coal-mining industry and agencies interested in the prevention of coal-mine accidents should not be satisfied until accidents from explosions and fires are eliminated. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions and fires, such disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. Despite this knowledge, far too many coal¬mine operators and employees continue to follow procedures that have resulted in disasters in the past. Included in the appendix to this circular are a number of safety measures designed to prevent coal-mine explosions and fires and metal-mine fires. Their adoption is essential if explosions and fires are to be prevented, as certainly they should be. An epidemic of disastrous mine fires of electrical origin during the past 2 years emphasizes the need for better methods of protection of underground electrical circuits. At present, committees of mining-electrical engineers, electrical-equipment manufacturers' representatives, and others are cooperating with the Bureau of Mines seeking means to solve this problem.

I would like to thank The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for inviting us to share with you some of our experiences in the handling, storage, and transportation of industrial minerals in North America. Sales exceed one billion dollars. Cometals, Inc. is located in New York and specializes in marketing of chemicals as well as raw materials used in the manufacture of steel, refractories, abrasives, glass and ceramics. This makes us one of the larger regular shippers of industrial minerals. Many people are aware that industrial minerals need to be viewed and judged on the merits of their chemical and physical characteristics. In addition you are surely aware that close attention must be paid to the economics of these minerals to determine the appropriate value and competitiveness of the minerals or products delivered at the doorsteps of the consuming work. You may, however, not be aware that the handling and transportation of the mineral is of crucial importance, in fact, the transportation and handling costs of industrial minerals frequently are a major component of the value of the ores marketed and, therefore, it is only natural that close attention should be paid to them. Many of the industrial minerals require special handling to assure that the material reaches the consumer without being contaminated and without getting wet. I invite you to accompany me through the various steps involved in "delivering the goods" to the consumer.

Hydrochem Developments Ltd. has developed and put into full scale operation a novel type of vertical flotation column incorporating a multiplicity of mechanically agitated stages. Characteristics of this flotation column include a low height to diameter ratio, high upgrading factors and the possibility of modifying geometry and operation to specific flotation requirements. A commercial unit is currently handling up to 100 tpd rougher concentrate at Dickenson Mines Limited, Balmertown, Ontario. Design parameters and plant performance will be discussed.

"This is a report on the combined application of ""long-chain"" flocculants and classifier cyclones in the field of slimes treatment, with emphasis on the simultaneous thickening and clarifying of industrial effluents, at low cost. The principle of the process described below involves: (1) the formation of small floes of relatively great strength, by sequential dispersion and conditioning, with average floe size of about 1501 microns; (2) the floes being of sufficient strength to withstand the shearing forces operating within a cyclone and consequently behaving as solid particles with an equivalent diameter (Stokes) that exceeds the size cutpoint of the classifier cyclone; (3) the removal of flocculated solids by means of a classifier cyclone the size cutpoint of which permits effective separation of these solids from the water. Results of test work to date indicate that a broader use of cyclones in industry is possible with the above types of flocculants because the submicron particles and colloidal material are readily collected and clear water is produced, with the attendant advantages of compact construction and low cost that are characteristic of centrifugal separation. The process generally permits classifier cyclones of medium throughput capacity (e.g. 12-in. diam.) to be used for clarifying effluents that contain minus 10-micron particles."

One of the problems associated with the maintenance of roadways in underground coal mines is that of dealing with roadway closure. Sidewall weakening technique is based on the transference of the high stress zone further away from the vicinity of roadway. This transferral is carried out by weakening parts of sidewalls of roadway by cut- ting slot, drilling a series of parallel holes or blasting during development stage. In the paper, the effect of sidewall weakening on the stability of roadway is studied by finite element analysis and field experiment. The finite element analysis shows that sidewall weakening can control the development of yield zone around a roadway, improving the stability of roadway. It is also shown that if in- situ horizontal stress is lower or higher than the in-situ vertical stress, it is difficult to obtain roadway stability by sidewall weakening. The field experiment shows that roadway closure can be controlled by sidewall weakening with blasting.

Solid-state equipment offers a number of potential advantages in the coal mining industry. These advantages can only be realized, however, through careful and judicious design of the control and protection circuitry. Problems relating to the interaction of solid-state equipment on the electrical system and the special design considerations which apply to solid-state circuitry are examined. Design guidelines are provided for solid-state applications in the areas of: (a) equipment operated from a DC trolley wire, (b) drive systems for surface mining equipment, (c) AC motor starters, and (d) electromagnetic interference.

Diesel engines are a major source of underground miners? exposure to nitrogen dioxide. In an effort to reduce the exposure of underground miners to regulated and unregulated diesel emissions, primarily particulate matter, mining companies in the U.S. are retrofitting existing and introducing new engines with various exhaust aftertreatment technologies. Different aftertreatment devices, or changing the operating temperature of a selected device, can have unexpected effects on the concentration of nitrogen dioxide emitted by a diesel-powered piece of equipment. This paper provides an overview of the effects different exhaust aftertreatment technologies available to the mining industry have on no2 emissions.

The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the mountains of Taiwan are both young transpressive orogens characterised by rapid uplift and exhumation, high heat flow and vigorous surface processes. Comparing and contrasting the two provides an ideal framework through which to explore the structural and lithological controls on fluid and gold mobility during collisional deformation. Both have two fluid flow systems centred about their drainage divide with shallow topographically-driven meteoric water above a deeper flow system dominated by mineralising rock-exchanged fluids. Despite similar tectonic settings, the distribution of heat flow, hot springs and veins in the two orogens are different. Taiwan has higher heat flow, distributed hot springs and localised veining whereas the Southern Alps have a narrow heat flow anomaly, localised warm springs and widespread veining. We use three-dimensional numerical models to evaluate key parameters that affect fluid flow and gold mineralisation. Models show that differences in crustal strength and thickness affect the locus, scale and rate of crustal fluid flow and hence influence gold deposition at a variety of scales. We explore how surface topography can lead to localised changes in the stress state, facilitating the switching of principal stresses and hence vein orientations.CITATION:Upton, P and Craw, D, 2015. "The inhalation of silica has been shown to produce a dramatic inflammatory and toxic response within the lungs of humans and laboratory animals. A variety of cellular and biochemical parameters are used to assess the silica-induced lung injury. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the use of luminok:Jependent chemiluminescence as a new method to study inflammation in both phagocytic cells and lung tissue recovered from silicaexposed animals. Chemiluminescence, or the emission of light, accompanies the release of reactive forms of oxygen when phagocytic cells are challenged. In this study, male Fischer 344 rats were intratracheally instilled with either silica (10 mg/100 g bw) or saline vehicle. One day after the instillations. a marked increase in the chemiluminescence was observed in the lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage cells recovered from the silica- treated animals when compared with the saline controls. The light reaction was markedly decreased by either superoxide dismutase or N-nitro-Larginine methyl ester hydrochloride. Superoxide dismutase is involved in the enzymatic breakdown of superoxide anion. while N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrocholoride, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, prevents the formation of nitric oxide. When superoxide anion and nitric oxide react. they form the highly oxidizing substance peroxynitrite. This study then implicates peroxynitrite as an agent that may be responsible for some of the oxidant lung injury that is associated with silica exposure. The use of luminol-dependent chemiluminescence may prove valuable as a method to measure the earliest events in the inflammatory process. and may be an adjunct in studying the mechanisms that produce inflammation. - Environ Health Perspect 102(Suppl 10):37-42 (1994) IntroductionResearch on inflammation has not produced a method that links the initial events of the process to the controlling events. Rather, a variety of parameters are measured that are the result of and not the basis of the inflammatory reaction. Parameters such as tissue weight, edema, blood flow, enzyme and protein release, or production of metabolites (prostaglandins, leukotrienes) have been used extensively. A method is needed that could be applied to cells of a particular type, groups of cells of different types, and even tissue, in an attempt to study the kinetics of the inflammation as well as being sensitive enough to monitor the early events of the process . Since inflammation is so complicated, the relationship between the control of the initial events and the oxidation process has never been explained nor studied in any derail."

O complexo de extração, beneficiamento e transporte de minério de ferro denominado Minas-Rio, de propriedade da Anglo American, consome na moagem primária uma grande quantidade de corpos moedores (bolas metálicas). Recentemente, foi desenvolvido em 4 etapas um trabalho para automatizar a reposição dos corpos moedores e estabilizar o grau de enchimento do moinho. Na etapa A, com a reposição sendo realizada com auxílio de um operador. Na etapa B, com a reposição sendo realizada automaticamente de acordo com uma taxa de reposição predefinida. Nas etapas C e D, com a taxa de reposição sendo alterada por meio do sistema de controle avançado OCS-4D©, considerando a potência do moinho como indicação indireta do grau de enchimento. É possível verificar após a implementação das modificações uma maior estabilidade da potência e consequentemente maior estabilidade do grau de enchimento.
