Over the decades, mine and mineral processing plant operations for the most part, have been found to have had adverse impacts on the environment. At the same time, mineral processing and mining operations produce mineral products that are indispensable to modern society. Thus, the sector has desirable and undesirable attributes simultaneously. The situation presents itself as a contradiction (i.e.) the mineral processing and mining operations are wanted by society, and at the same time unwanted by society. The existing methods of addressing the issues raised above have evidently not been very successful in reducing the opposition to new projects and to the related activities such as land acquisition. This paper attempts to show the relevance and applicability of TRIZ for addressing the issue. TRIZ, or Teoriya Rezheniya Isobretatelski Zadach, is a Russian acronym meaning Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ is a powerful tool that can be usefully applied to resolve such contradictions, using resources usually available within the system of interest. Accordingly, this paper introduces the issue background, followed by an introduction to some key concepts of TRIZ such as the 40 principles, separation principles and directed evolution. The paper goes on to apply the 40 principles to two case studies. The results show that TRIZ could be a useful tool to generate potentially innovative and sustainable approaches. Its most appropriate position would be as a supplement to current decision-making procedures, and as a validation tool to review existing solutions for possible improvements. The papers contained herein summarize results of various recent Bureau of Mines investigations in the area of mine power distribution systems. They are based on information from Bureau personnel, contractors and grantees, and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Conclusions drawn from a series of parameter measurements on mine power systems, taken over a 3-year span, are presented. Personnel and equipment hazards due to faults on isolated, solidly grounded, and resistance grounded three-phase systems are discussed. Two papers cover dc applications of circuit breakers, including a novel protection scheme for trolley lines. The methods of suppressing induced arcing currents and voltages in a-c machines are evaluated. An evaluation program for ground monitors is described. Acceptance test procedures and the importance of various paparameters for trailing cable splice are covered. A number of techniques for locating faults in trailing cables are described.

The Bureau of Mines investigated hot-rolling and forging characteristics of experimental ductile iron castings, both sand and permanent-mold, made with charges containing up to 70 pct foundry pig iron and 95 pct steelmaking pig iron. Between 1,550° and 1,950° F, most castings could be rolled to 90-pct reduction or forged to 70-pct reduction without serious cracking. Charge and composition have less bearing on workability than on subsequent properties. Permanent mold castings could be worked as readily as sand castings at 1,750° and 1,950° F. Plasticity improved with temperature. Small billets were also forged cold to 50-pct reduction without cracking. With equivalent nodularity, composition affects properties of wrought materials by altering matrix structure and strength. Properties vary with reduction and improve with increasing working temperature. Rolled material has high strength and anisotropy, and low ductility, particularly in the trans-verse direction. Annealing reduces strength and improves ductility, but anisotropy persists. At 70-pct reduction, impact resistance in the longitudinal direction is about twice that in the transverse. Annealing roughly doubles impact resistance. Deformation enhances damping capacity. The feasibility of die-forging and bar-rolling of ductile iron was evaluated in trial tests conducted under a Bureau contract. Although workability and ductility of ductile iron are inferior to those of steel, more advantage could be taken of ductile iron's plasticity to work rough shapes to final dimensions.

Abstract As part of the active development programme pursued by Dominion Magnesium Limited since 1945, a modern extrusion plant was erected and has been in operation for about twelve months. The only source of nigh purity magnesium in the world, Canadian metal is produced by metallurgical processes within the frame-work of the mining industry, which gives a different viewpoint to every phase of production from other world suppliers of commercial grade metal whose operations are based on chemical industries and techniques. The superior properties of corrosion resistance and grain refinement have aided a programme of standardization, reducing the number of alloys supplied in extruded form from seven to four as an aid to economic production. The first big step was the development of a general purpose alloy known as AZ?21x covering all decorative and medium stressed applications, which will supersede two older alloys. Sales approaching a million feet in this alloy show that it bids fair to become the 'mild steel' of the magnesium industry, its applications ranging from terrazzo floor strip to textile machinery and television mast components. In the high stressed field, metallurgical features preclude low-cost extrusion of the older high-strength alloys, but recent development of a magnesium alloy containing zirconium promises an easily workable metal. Hitherto produced by expensive chemical additions, research now shows that the alloy can be produced by metallurgical means, which may make this alloy available for a wide range of commercial applications. Thus the future development programme for extruded products in the form of tube, bars, shapes, and structural angles and channels may evolve two alloys to cover all applications for strengths up to 52,000 lb. per sq. in. Such standardization is the result of taking advantage of the physical and metallurgical properties of high-purity magnesium instead of accepting techniques based on metal produced by older processes.

UNLIKE most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are-I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital-it is not, those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his: approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fair-ness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude-his refusal to accept them as masters-that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united.

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. At the heart of the mining process are a number of basic and fundamental tasks whose regular and repeated performance constitute the mining cycle. As will be discussed presently, these tasks are the basic components of the mining system. Section 9, Production Operations, provides the mine designer and engineer with an understanding of these tasks and with sufficient design principles to allow this person to create an efficient mine system. This section is meant to be an introduction and adjunct to subsequent sections that describe specific mining systems. However, sufficient design information is included here for the independent design of mine systems that may not be described elsewhere or for subsequent verification of existing designs. For the purposes of this section, mining subsumes excavation; thus this material applies to any excavation process. Accordingly, this section is written in general enough terms to include both surface and underground mining. It may be used also for civil engineering excavations that often involve the same steps. Obviously, the actual procedures undertaken in any specific mining system will appear to be very different from those taken in any other system. This is certainly true when comparing surface with underground methods. Yet the fundamental principles are often the same. This segment is written to explicate the basics. Wherever appropriate, the section will suggest the differences between the application process to surface or to underground mining.

A series of linear programmed instruction modules was developed in the general subject areas of Blasting Technology & Explosives Safety & Electrical Training. The linear programs (modules) were developed in the form of tape-slide plus workbook materials, while the branching format evolved from the LTS teaching machine system from MIT, through several other teaching machines and micro-computers, finally settling on Radio Shack TRS-80 microcomputers, Models I & III. Initial validation figures indicate that essentially the same result, are attained from both methods (based on pre and post test scores), with the most noticeable difference being an approximately 25% savings in study time with the branching modules. In December 1980, the development of modules on High-Voltage Training, Trolley Wireman Training, and Compressed Gas Safety was added to the overall tasks of the contract.

"INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to obtain information concerning the effects of boron in steel and its method of addition, so that boron, which is readily obtainable domestically, may be used to relieve the great demand for those scarce, strategic, alloying elements that hitherto have been considered necessary for the successful manufacture of quality steel.Previous Work Guillet 4/ seems to have been the first to predict that boron-bearing steel might have a possible industrial use when, in 1907, he published results of an investigation into the properties of steel containing 0.21 to 1.51 percent boron.Possibly Walter 2/ was the first to appreciate the fact that extremely small percentages of boron are effective in improving the properties of a steel. His patent, issued in 1924 claimed steels containing boron within the limits of 0.001 to 0.100 percent; furthermore, the specifications disclosed that boron increased the hardenability of steel and refined its grain structure. In 1937, Naton and Piwowarsky 6/ otherwise observed that boron increased the hardenablity of steel."

"The common-held view of the future of copper mining is one of declining quality of mineral resources and increasingly limited long-term development options. This decline, in turn, is viewed as inevitably leading to increasing economic, socio-political and environmental costs. As a result, new technologies and innovations will be required to mitigate cost escalation. The future is therefore typically summarised as a battle of a ‘below-ground’ declining quality asset base pushing costs upward versus ‘above-ground’ technology and innovation driving costs downward. The role that high quality new mineral discoveries could play in mitigating industry cost pressures is typically understated, if considered at all. New high quality discoveries can be mined at lower cost than existing assets and potentially if discovered in the right locations within a more amenable contemporary environmental and socio-political setting. Such deposits, once discovered, would improve the overall quality of the industry asset base, as well as benefitting their owners substantially through higher margins. However, to target new high quality deposits explorers need some understanding of the nature of high quality copper mines in the long-term future. Conventional scientific and economic techniques for analysing the future of copper supply, generally by studying the project pipeline, ignore as yet undiscovered resources and also struggle to fully incorporate the multiple internal and external factors that could impact upon copper mining practices in the future.Scenario analysis is specifically designed to consider multiple factors interacting in the future, and is thus more creative than simply looking at the visible project pipeline. The use of scenarios is therefore potentially capable of providing insight into aspects of the future of copper mining about which little is currently known or that remains considerably uncertain. In this study, the Oxford University Scenarios methodology was employed to analyse different plausible futures for copper mining and the consequent implications for exploration targeting strategies. The scenario analysis highlights two key dimensions or axes that serve to map out potential industry futures: firstly the technical and economic optimisation of the existing industry; and secondly the generation of new prospects or ‘search space’ for the copper industry. These two axes in turn frame four different scenarios for the future of the copper mining industry. These copper mining scenarios are then compared to the 20 largest existing copper mines and projects, and their owners, to determine if any represent an appropriately robust exploration targeting proxy: none do. The paper therefore concludes that efforts by industry are required to generate mine concepts that would be viable across all scenarios, and thus act also as exploration targeting proxies. In the interim, companies will have to seek to build portfolios that create an overall robust asset base, out of individually less robust assets. Failure to do this implies that consequential, irreversible strategic decisions lie ahead for the copper mining industry, which may be a threat to both incumbents and the very industry itself. The references were published during the 1977 to 1988 period. Each reference is evaluated by keywords, providing the reader with a means of rapidly sorting through the references to locate those articles with the coal mining region and subjects of interest. All references are annotated.

This bulletin, which discusses open-cut mining at the metal mines of the United States, is the last of a series of such papers by the Bureau of Mines describing the principal methods of mining.4 Open-cut mining is applicable to flat-lying mineral deposits relatively near the surface. Vein deposits seldom are amenable to this method, although outcrops of veins sometimes are worked as open pits. Most of the iron ore of the country is mined from open pits; according to the Minerals Yearbook, 67.4 percent was mined from open pits and 32.6 percent from underground mines in 1937. Open-cut mining is relatively new in the copper industry but yields more copper than any other method; in 1937 about 52 percent of the copper ore mined in the United States was taken from open pits. Lead-zinc ore has been produced from open pits in the Joplin (Mo.) district, but most of the deposits in this area, although flat-lying, are too deep to be mined economically by the open-cut method. In 1937 one company at Oronogo, Mo., was stripping overburden and mining mixed oxidized and sulfide ores by this method.

The Bureau of Mines determined the costs associated with the production of chromium, in the form of chromite and high-carbon ferrochomium, from the demonstated resources of 10 market economy nations. The analyses evaluated the relative geologic and economic position of these chromite resources contained within 80 producing or potential mining operations. This report presents cost evaluations of a demonstrated resource of chromite, contained within the nations studied, of appoximately 1.2 billion metric tons (t). Of this total, 70 pct is contained within the southern African nations of Zimbabwe and the Republic of South Africa. The majority of current chromium mining and smelting capacity is contained within these two countries as well. India and the Philippines have recently demonstrated greatly increased chromite resources and hold the most promise for expanding both chomite and ferrochromium production outside southern Africa. Their demonstrated resources represent approximately 7 and 16 pet, respectively, of the cost evaluated total tonnage. Chromite resources, on an identified or hypothetical basis worldwide, are highly concentrated within Zimbabwe and South Africa, with these two nations containing in excess of 95 pet of the total. Given the present market structure, a majority of chromium contained within the demonstrated chromite resources of the nations studied is economically recoverable; but from a long-term resource and economic perspective, South Africa should inceasingly dominate the markets for both chromite and high-carbon ferrochromium. In addition, it is anticipated that an increasing percentage of chromium traded on the world market in the future will be in the form of high-carbon ferrochromium as opposed to chromite, as this additional processing stage continues to relocate from the industrial nations that account for a majority of chromium consumption to those nations that mine chromite.

Near misses recorded and reported by workers can provide awarenessto the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, it is unclear what the value of these reports are, if any, and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. Of those, 167 were valid near misses that occurred at work. Researchers coded the reports using a qualitative 5 × 5 risk matrix. Of the 167 near misses, 19% were deemed low risk, 25% moderate risk, 30% high risk, and 26% critical risk. Several patterns in the near-miss incidents were documented, including classification of incidents and common corrective actions referenced (i.e., elimination/substitution, engineering control or redesign, work process/procedures, and personal protective equipment). The analysis provides insight into ways that risk communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

The Tertiary channel gravel deposits in northern California were selected Or detailed investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as part of a national program to locate potential sources of gold that might be developed rapidly by large-scale mining operations. Five bureau research centers representing mining and metallurgy subsystems coordinated their efforts in a team operation to identify and investigate possible solutions to the problem area, that long have discouraged the resumption of large-scale mining in the deposits. This report summarizes the individual investigations, conclusions and recommendations conducted and prepared by all mining subsystems research groups after the completion of two years of field work at the deposits on San Juan Ridge in Nevada County, California. The studies indicate that modern mining technology can cope with the environmental problems that closed the immense hydraulic mines in 1,884. however, they also indicate that mining can be conducted with only marginal profits its unless the price of gold remains substantially above $70 per ounce or unless sufficient by-products can be recovered and sold to place the average value per cubic yard of gravel into a positive commercial range. The by-product potential of the Tertiary gravels remains to be investigated in more detail.

In situ stresses, based on isotropic and anisotropic relations, were evaluated using computer techniques from overcoring data obtained in dimension stone quarries along the Appalachian Piedmont, the Ozark Uplift, and the Ouachita Tectonic Belt. Stresses in the horizontal plane near the surface are compressive and range from 100 to 4,500 psi. The direction of maximum compressive stress seems to be alined with the general tectonic structure for most of the determinations. The ratio of the maximum to minimum elastic parameters in the horizontal plane ranges from 1.05 to 2.46 for these competent rocks. Isotropic versus anisotropic stress determinations show differences only as great as 25 percent in stress magnitude and 25° in orientation.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. Uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio 2. Triaxial compressive strength 3. Brazilian tensile strength 4. Modulus of rupture 5. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Continental No. l mine is at the south end of the Big Indian mining district, San Juan County, Utah. The mine is on a school section owned by the State of Utah and leased by Continental Uranium, Inc. A 70,000-ton uranium-vanadium ore deposit was discovered as a result of an exploratory drilling program completed in 1954.

ONE of the problems encountered in any mine is the effect of increasing pressure manifested by increasing depth. Although the depth at which excessive pressure assumes serious proportion, and the manner in which it appears in underground workings, are influenced by a variety of factors, nevertheless the difficulty is present in all mines and its gravity increases with increasing depth. In the Kirkland Lake camp, as far back as seven years ago, mining had proceeded to depths sufficient to result in the formation of pressure great enough to cause violent disruption of masses of rock. It is proposed in this paper to deal with the effect of pressure caused by mining as observed at Lake Shore Mines, and to describe some of the methods which have been adopted to counteract it. There are many contributing factors in a study of the problem, and results vary widely in individual mines and in different localities. One feature common to all, however, is that there is ground subsidence, evidenced either by a gradual settling accompanied by crushing and shearing of the ore and wall-rocks, or the disruption of the ground surrounding the periphery of an excavation may take place suddenly, attended by more or less violent shattering of the rocks. Such violent failure of a mass of rock has been designated by the term rock-burst. The history of rock-bursts extends over a great number of years. They have occurred in some form or other in practically ali places where mining operations, at all but very shallow depths, have been carried out. Since the theoretical aspects of the subject have been dealt 'with at great length by capable and experienced writers (1), the present paper will give only a brief résumé of the theories propounded by those engaged in deep mining operations in various parts of the world.
