For the first half of the 21st century, the United States will rely on the same mix of fuels it has for the past 50 years. Petroleum for the United States will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in stress on the gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging “piggy-back” trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912). IN a paper before the Institute at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., June 1911,1 Mr. James Gayley discussed the application of this process to iron-bearing materials. The same author2 described the results of operations at the plant at Birdsboro, Pa. The purpose of the present paper is to present further discussion of some technical details involved in the operation of this plant, and of the theoretical and practical relations of this product to blast-furnace practice. Since Oct. 1, 1911, the Birdsboro plant has been in operation at the blast-furnace of the E. & G. Brooke Iron Co. The results have been highly satisfactory, although the material treated, being chiefly the flue-dust currently made by the furnace or taken from the accumulated stock-pile, was excessively high, and yet not uniform, in carbon, so that the desirable control or regularity of the amount of fuel in the mixture treated could not be maintained. Nothing could more forcibly demonstrate the flexibility of the process than the fact that, under these conditions, the sinter produced was, in all cases, of excellent quality. The Dwight & Lloyd process, as such, and its present highly-developed mechanical appliances were described by Mr. Gayley in the paper above mentioned. While the repetition of some particulars will be unavoidable in this paper, it will be confined to features bearing upon the metallurgical principles involved. Pneumatic conveying of coal underground is not widely used in the United States, although it is becoming increasingly popular in Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, and South Africa. The question of safety has been raised repeatedly: Will the system be prone to dust or gas explosions, and, if so, can it withstand such occurrences safely? The work reported here was done under a Bureau of Mines contract and deals with the safety aspects of pneumatic transport of underground coal, as well as the hazards inherent in more conventional haulage systems. Included are three designs for different applications of pneumatic haulage: off-loading a continuous-mining machine on a room- and-pillar section, vertical hoisting through a 1,200-ft shaft, and off-loading a tunnel-boring machine driving a 2,000-ft tunnel.

The development of commercial natural-gas reserves in the Michigan stray sandstone horizon of central Michigan during the past few years has resulted in expansion of the natural-gas industry in that State. The location of the natural-gas reserves of Michigan in the general vicinity of domestic and industrial markets is of economic importance, and in supplying these markets with natural gas a reasonable knowledge of, the extent and availability of the reserves is needed in formulating regulations for drilling gas wells and producing natural gas in analyzing the feasibility of projects to construct natural-gas transmission lines, in promoting and developing markets for the domestic and industrial consumption of natural gas, and in solving many engineering and economic problems common to the natural-gas industry. The development of the natural-gas industry in Michigan has been related closely to the development of oil production. The potential oil production of Michigan is comparable with that in most of the eastern oil-producing States. The development of oil production probably will continue, especially in the central Michigan Basin area; and as wells are drilled to deep horizons in the search for oil, more knowledge will be obtained of the gas reserves in formations above the oil-bearing horizons.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the stability evaluation and bifurcation criteria are presented for the Jinping arch dam structure. The bifurcation models in failure status of the arch dam are derived from the uniqueness of the controlling equation of dam behaviours, and the relative phenomena between positive definition of dam structural tangent stiffness and bifurcation are given in the paper. Then the structural collapse criteria for arch dam are discussed based on the energy mode. A stability criterion of dam based on the connection of yield zones is proposed according to the implementation of elasto-plastic FEM (finite element method) numerical analysis. In accordance with this judging method, nonlinear FEM analysis is used for Jinping arch dam. The failure process of the Jinping dam was simulated and yield zones were found under the overloading condition. This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

"Very little is known about the large scale fluid dynamics and associated distribution of copper in an operating electrowinning cell, yet they will have a major influence on mass transfer and plating quality. The CFD model in this work is used to simulate an entire EW cell with 60 cathodes and 61 anodes, or 121 anode–cathode pairs, elucidating for the first time the three-dimensional (3D) flow and copper distribution in an industrial cell. Two methods for the distribution of electrolyte are modelled:1. Downcomer method: electrolyte is fed by a downcomer at one end of the cell, overflowing at the opposite end.2. Manifold method: a horizontal manifold pipe runs the whole length of the cell and feeds electrolyte via small holes in the top of the manifold pipe.The recirculation that develops within each anode-cathode pair, driven by oxygen bubble generation on the anode, is similar to that seen previously in two-dimensional models of single anode–cathode gaps. However a more complex 3D flow recirculation is established, which involves flow of electrolyte down the side gaps (being a path of low resistance for return flow) as well as the usual return flow down the cathode side of each pair gap. The bubble-driven flow is not influenced by the mode of electrolyte distribution.The electrolyte flow due to the manifold and downcomer is somewhat secondary to the bubble driven flow. In the case of the downcomer distribution mode, the high injection velocity causes a very turbulent flow in the first 1–2 m down the cell from the downcomer, with several large vortices developing. This may lead to some sludge particles being entrained into the bulk of the cell.In the manifold pipe case, the jet from each hole is dissipated very quickly, within the first 10–20 cm. The jets are directed into the downward flowing zone of the bubble-driven recirculation, which leads to unstable and periodic behaviour on a large spatial scale.In both the manifold and downcomer cases, there is a marked two-zone vertical stratification in copper concentration."

A mini- or micro-machine is a small electro- mechanical device. There are several existing applications of micro-sensors such as the accelerometers used in automobile airbags or the force sensors and grippers used at the ends of micro-surgery tools. Potential applications of existing mini- and micro-technologies are possible and could be used to improve the control and efficiency of fragmentation, heap leaching and other mining and mineral processing operations. A more radical proposition is to devise mass-produced, possibly disposable, minimachines that would operate in large groups. These would be the basis of highly selective, efficient, flexible, and clean mining and mineral processing methods. The paper is intended to promote discussion of how innovative applications of mini-technologies can be used to improve and radically change current mining and mineral processing methods.

Coal mining by the longwall method typically causes seismic events. This paper describes the research on mining induced seismicity around two specific longwalls at 1100m depth under several old longwalls. A local network featuring 21 geophones has been installed, underground core drilling and an extensive rock testing program were executed. A rock mechanical model featuring a multi-layer strata was created for use with numerical analyses. Seismic events were localized and three different event types are described. Focal analyses yielded distinct modes of failure. Those types are explained by different failure mechanisms, namely fault activation, remnant pillar punching and beam failure. The use of rock mass classification, rock mass strength criteria and in situ stresses together with 2D and 3D numerical analyses allows evaluating the findings from seismology approaches. Conclusions are drawn that the orientation of longwall with respect to the major horizontal stress orientation plays an important role in mine induced seismicity.

Orebodies are defined in economic terms in that they must satisfy conditions determined by costs of mining, extraction and marketing before being so described. Despite this they have an essential chemical character as specialized products resulting from geochemical differentiation, and it is surprising that so little basic geochemical research has been carried out with respect to ore occurrence and that prospecting methods based on geochemical principles are not more widely applied.Many exploration geologists associate geochemistry with analytical techniques applied to the detection of dispersed traces of metals from actual orebodies. Geochemical research, applied to economic geology, goes far beyond this limited field and the purpose of this paper is to discuss aspects of such research and its use in formulating exploration principles.THE GEOCHEMICAL BACKGROUND TO MINERAL OCCURRENCE AND EXPLORATIONThe three aspects of economic mineral deposits to which geochemical research can be of use in determining ore guides are genesis, control of deposition and mode of dispersion from orebodies after emplacement. Prospecting for mineral deposits is primarily based on theories of ore occurrence which deal with the genetic and depositional influences controlling localization of ore. There are many such theories and they will not be discussed here as they have been adequately reviewed in geological publications. The knowledge of the geological sequence and hydrological conditions in the area of portals was the basis for the design of the entry of the highway into tunnel Trojane. Mudstone, claystone and sandstone dominate the rock layering, which is tectonically reworked and contains structural anomalies. The complexity of the sequence makes it impossible to survey all the relevant features along the full 3km length of the tunnel. Sudden and frequent transitions between litological sequences impose potential instabilities and make the excavation of the tunnel particularly difficult. The initial survey established the zones of potential failures. These were monitored using topographic survey and inclinometers with an aim to make further geotechnical analyses more reliable and adjusted to the ground conditions. The analyses of the wall construction and the results of the monitoring showed that the design of the retaining wall was adequate. La connaissance de la séquence géologique et des conditions hydrologiques dans l'aire des portails a été la base pour la planification de l'entrée de l'autoroute dans le tunnel Trojane. Le schiste, l'argilite et le grès dominent la couche rocheuse qui est tectoniquement transformée et contient les anomalies structurales. A cause de la complexité de la séquence, il est impossible de revoir toutes les particularités le long des 3 kilomètres de la toute longueur du tunnel. Les transitions soudaines et fréquentes entre les séquences lithologiques imposent l'instabilité potentielle et font l'excavation du tunnel particulièrement difficile. La revue initiale a été établie sur les zones où il existe l'éboulement potential. Elles étaient contrôlées à l'aide de la revue topographique et de l'inclinomètre pour que les analyses géotechniques suivantes soient plus sûres et adaptées aux conditions du sol. Les analyses de la construction des murs et des résultats du contrôle ont montré que la planification du mur réteneur était correspondante. Der Autobahneingang in den Trojane Tunnel war projektiert auf Basis von der Kenntnis der geologischen und hydrogeologischen Bedingungen in dem Portalgebiet. Das Gebiet besteht aus dem Tonstein und dem Sandstein. Die Schichten sind tektonisch verformt und sind deswegen sehr heterogen. Die anfaenglichen Untersuchungen haben die Zonen von den potentiellen Bruechen definiert. Weitere geotechnische Analysen waren fitted an reale geologische Bedingungen durch das Monitoring der potentiellen Bruchzonen, welches aus den topographyschen Messungen und Inklinometerdaten entstand. Die Analyse des Wandbaues und die Resultate von dem Monitoring haben erwiesen, dass die Wandprojektierung entsprechend war.

"In mechanized tunneling the annular gap between the segmental lining and the surrounding soil caused by tunnel driving, must be backfilled almost instantaneously with an adequate grouting mortar. The objective of this research is to perform a fully three dimensional modeled parametric study using FLAC 3D and evaluate the effects of backfill grouting on the tunneling performance. The research focuses on comparisons between different injection materials and state-of-the-art Bi-Component grout and their effects on the settlements on the surface. The research consists of testing a regular situation of tunnel excavation using a shielded machine with face under pressure. The tunnel dimensions and the soil properties are selected as close as possible to the reality and based on Turin Metro case. 1 INTRODUCTION Excavation of tunnels in urban areas can induce ground movements, which have negative effects on existing structures. In such scenarios, shield tunneling has become a well-accepted construction method in various ground conditions. It is characterized by relatively complex interactions between the soil, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) itself, the tunnel lining and the tail void grout. The problem to control the settlement depends on the face pressure, ground properties and back filling procedure and material of the tail void. The face pressure acts against the front to guarantee the face stability. In case of EPB TBMs the stability of the tunnel face is ensured through the excavated soil itself, which is conditioned and is maintained in compressed state within the excavation chamber. When excavating with TBMs a tail void is created between ground and the lining (Fig.1) after the TBM excavation and ring assembly that must be backfilled instantaneously by injecting the backfill material through the TBM’s tail shield. The process is of primary importance as it reduces the surface settlements and creates an immediate link between the ground and lining, sealing against ground water and leakage, reducing the differential movements between segments and providing long-term stability. The most used backfilling materials are: Inert mixtures that do not contain cement instead sometimes they are replaced by fly ash or other substitutes. A typical design of an inert mortar consists of sand, fly ash, bentonite and water. Pea gravel, which is constituted of granular materials with grain size ranging from 8 to 12 mm. This mixture is highly recommended for tunnels being constructed in rock mass with little deformation rates.Cement mortar is composed of cement, water, aggregates and sometimes bentonite. Cement controls the principle mechanical property of the mix, which can reach high values of 15-20 MPa in 28 days. The aggregates contribute towards the shear strength and reduce the pumpablity of the mix (Thewes and Budach, 2009). The reduced active systems have a cement content of 50-100 kg/m3, whereas the active system the binder component derives full hydration with cement content of over 200 kg/m3 ."

Advances in the technology of abrasion resistant irons and steels, which could help in combating abrasion and wear in mining operations, are reviewed. Nodular irons alloyed with nickel or copper and molybdenum, with acicular, bainitic or bainitic-martensicic microstructures are described. These alloy irons combine excellent castability and relatively easy machinabilitv with good resistance to wear. Recent progress in the development of high chromium molybdenum alloy irons is outlined, by which high temperature heat treatment of massive castings can be eliminated, alloy costs can be reduced and cracking problems avoided. Data is also given on the erosion-corrosion resistance of these irons. Trends in the development of improved cast steels are outlined. Factors influencing the toughness and abrasion resistance of manganese steels are considered. The 6% Mn 1% Mo manganese steels are shown to have a useful combination of toughness and abrasion resistance. Composite castings are seen as a means of com- bating abrasion in applications involving severe impact. A brief appraisal is given of recently developed martensitic wrought steels with improved weldability.

Luminescence excited by electron bombardment, or cathodoluminescence (CL), is a very useful tool in petrographic examination of rocks, minerals and ores. Differences in luminescence colors and intensities allow detection and delineation of mineral species and composition zones difficult to separate visually by normal polarized light microscopy. The cold cathode CL chamber at Indiana University is used with a binocular microscope that has interchangeable attachments for a normal film camera, a digital camera and a fiber optic spectrometer. This allows imaging of the specimens as well as limited spectrographic analysis of the emitted luminescence. The chamber on this CL unit is large enough to accommodate several thin sections, polished mounts, grain mounts or rock slices at one time. Luminescence petrographic techniques were used to study alkali syenites and carbonatites from the Arkansas. Alkali feldspars in the syenites reveal a history of growth, fenitization and replacement through color and intensity differences. Primary orthoclase luminesces bright blue and is often zoned with a duller blue overgrowth of microcline. Fenitization of the feldspars is demonstrated by dull to bright red luminescence and replacement veins of albite often have a bright yellow green luminescence. Late microcline and perthites from the syenite pegmatites have a dull yellow to orange luminescence. Easily visible on this background of feldspars are grains of apatite (yellow), fluorite (violet), zircon (greenish), sodalite (orange) and mosandrite (green). Complex pseudoleucite syenites from Magnet Cove, Arkansas show similar minerals but also include xenolithic quartz (violet), manganwollastonite (bright orange), benitoite (intense blue) and lorenzenite (green). Carbonatites from Arkansas contain a wide variety of calcite textures and intensities of luminescence. Grains of carbonatite in well cuttings are easily distinguished from sedimentary calcites by their complex “flame” luminescence and the frequent presence of euhedral apatite grains (yellow). Apatite crystals separated from the Arkansas River Valley carbonatites by acid digestion show complex zoning. The cores of these apatites are yellow luminescing due to CL activation by Mn enrichment while the rims are violet luminescing due to REE enrichment. Complex zonation between the cores and rims is easily visible using CL.

Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.

"This paper was' prepared to emphasize the part that coal washing tables can play in the development of many of the reserves of coking coals in Western Canada_ It covers a brief history of the development of the coal washing table through the present third-generation unit, which suspends from overhead steel beams and is driven by a counter-rotating gear mechanism. The design and operation of this unique table are covered in detail.An analysis of actual operating data is included, with explicit statistical breakdowns of the table products. The data used were actually produced by operating coal companies, and also produced by the United States Bureau of Mines while gathering data for a research investigation. Table feed capacity is discussed, as well as performance criteria and the parameters of relative table performance. Several typical table flowsheets are described, emphasizing the specific reasons for their use. The paper covers the past and present value of the table to the United States coal industry, and makes mention of the newest addition to the family of suspended, multiple-deck, counter-rotating, gear-driven, coal washing tables, the CONCENCO ""88"" Deister table."

As part of its work on converting coal to fluid fuels, the Federal Bureau of Mines has been studying the synthesis of liquid fuels from carbon monoxide and hydrogen by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. A fluidized bed of nitrided, fused-iron catalyst has been operated successfully to produce high yields of oxygenated compounds. Trouble-free operation continued for over 800 hours, and the test was terminated voluntarily. About 85 percent of the fresh feed was converted when the unit was operated at a space velocity of 500 hr.-1, a 12:1 recycle-to-fresh-feed-gas ratio, a 300-p. s. i. g. pressure, and a temperature of 252° C. When operating at a fresh-feed-gas space velocity of 1,000 hr.-l and a 9:1 ratio of recycle to fresh gas, conversion of fresh feed was 68 percent, and the product yield was 235.9 grams per cubic meter of synthesis gas converted. The oxygenate and C5 and heavier hydrocarbon yield was 110.6 grams per cubic meter of gas converted, 83 percent of this was oxygenates. The atom ratio of N:Fe of the catalyst, initially 0.455, decreased to 0.288 by the end of the 800-hour experiment. Nevertheless, the yield of oxygenated compounds per cubic meter of H2 + CO converted at the end of the run was approximately the same as that obtained 500 hours earlier with identical operating conditions. X-ray analysis of the discharged catalyst indicated that only ?-iron carbonitride was present. Sieve analysis of the discharged catalyst indicated that only 2 percent of fines was produced during the reduction, nitriding, and synthesis.
