The Bureau of Mines is investigating the technology of petroleum and its products, the investigation including well-drilling methods and the transportation, treatment, and utilization of petroleum and of natural gas, with especial reference to the prevention of waste and to increased efficiencyin the development of oil and gas resources in land belonging to or controlled by the Government. During. the winter of 1912-13 the enormous waste of the gas encountered while drilling for oil in the Cushing field, Oklahoma, called forth protests from various sources, and appeal was made to the President of the United States and to the Secretary of the Interior in behalf of the landowner and of the public in general. The facts were wanted regarding the amount of waste and the technical conditions that were responsible for practices causing it. An investigation was ordered and conducted under the direct supervision of the late J. A. Holmes, the first Director of the Bureau of Mines. R. S.Blatchley was sent to investigate the amount of waste going on in the Mid-Continent flelds.s In the latter part of March, 1913, J. A. Pollard and A. G. Heggem were sent to Oklahoma to study well-drilling methods with reference to the waste of gas from wells on Indian lands and to suggest means of preventing the waste of natural gas on such lands. Pollard and Heggem decided that the mud-laden fluid process, which had been used successfully for some years in Texas, Louisiana, and California was the method that would meet the situation most efficiently and economically. The method was accordingly demonstrated in Oklahoma. In 1914 Congress provided for the employment of six oil and gas inspectors to supervise oil and gas mining operations on lands of the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma and to conduct investigations with a view to the prevention of waste. Positions under this appropriation have been held by William F. McMurray, James O. Lewis, Harry D. Aggers, Ralph R. "Weed,George W. McPherson, James C. Fowler, Louis W. Courtney, and Carl H. Beal, the technical work of these men being directed "byW. A. Williams, chief of the petroleum division, Bureau of Mines. After careful and impartial investigation of conditions in Oklahoma, these men also decided that the mud-laden fluid process was the one best adapted to prevent further wastes. In 1915 laws were passed by the State of Oklahoma that provide for the conservation of natural gas and oil, authority being given to the corporation commission to make rules and regulations and to employ agents to enforce them. After hearings and investigations, the corporation commission reached substantially the same conclusions as the Federal agents regarding the importance of the wastes and the best methods of conserving the gas. Technical Papers 66a and 68b were published by the Bureau of Mines in December, 1913, and January, 1914, respectively. Technical Paper 66 deals with the mud-laden fluid process in general and No. 68 with its application in Oklahoma. The interest aroused by these publications has been so widespread that within two years the first editions have been practically exhausted. Rather than reprint these publications, it has been considered advisable to replace them with the present report, which includes the results of more recent investigations. The methods of using the mud-laden fluid are an outgrowth of the rotary drilling system, which was developed in Texas and later employed in Louisiana and California. Some of the principles of the use of mud fluid had been observed and used to a limited extent for a long time in cable-tool drilling. So far as known it was first used successfully with a circulator and cable tools in the Coalinga field, California, in 1906,Harry D. Aggers, one of the contributors to this paper, working on the well. The part of the Bureau of Mines has been to call attention to its merits and to demonstrate its practical use in fields like those of the Mid-Continent.

The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is under construction now in Korea. For the stability analysis of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For this analysis, in-situ rock stresses were measured by overcoring method and horizontal to vertical stress ratio was calculated 1.07-1.32 at four sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from intact rock properties. The ratio of elasticity of rock mass was 0.16-0.55 of intact rock core elasticity. In general, elasto-plasticity with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was applied and the input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 of intact rock strength parameters, respectively. Reliable prediction of longwall gas emission sources and rate plays a critical role in mine ventilation and methane drainage capacity planning. Over the years, Australian longwall mines have been using the historic Winter method and the Flugge method in modelling specific gas emissions (SGE). The predicted results often experience high discrepancies from the operational reality. To improve gas emission prediction, post-mining gas contents were measured in several mines in Qld and NSW by safely drilling core holes into the longwall goaf. The results revealed many new insights into gas emission characteristics from different coal seams and the drawbacks of the European methods in their use in high-production gassy Australian longwall mines. Based on measurement data, a new, time-dependent gas emission prediction model has been developed. Considering several factors such as caving, desorption and production rate, the new model can predict more accurate and meaningful gas emissions to meet today’s needs in mine gas emission management. A case study is provided to demonstrate the application of the new SGE model.

This paper describes a mobile laboratory developed specifically for nickel prospecting, and which was designed to be operated by sub-professional staff in remote areas independently of established laboratories. An atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure was used to determine nickel, cobalt, lead, zinc, and copper ID latentIc and sulphIde samples, with a detection limit better than 25 µg/g for all elements. The procedure was applicable to both soil and drill samples and the accuracy of the procedure, which was ±5 per cent relative at the 1,000 µg/g level was sufficient for the preliminary assessment of mineralized samples and the control of drilling operations. The analytical procedure and the means taken to ensure the necessary reproductibility and accuracy are described. One operator can carry out 400 elemental determinations per 8-hr day at an approximate cdst of 6 cents per elemental determination. The results are returned within a single day, a factor which can contribute materially to the efficiency of drilling operations.

"Co-rich ferromanganese crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) distributed on seamounts in the western Pacific are potential economic resources for cobalt, nickel, platinum, and other rare metals in the future. Evaluation and selection of a mining site can be established based on abundance and grade of Fe-Mn crusts in the site as well as topography that should be smooth enough for mining operations. Therefore, acquisition of shipboard echo-sounding and acoustic backscatter data are prerequisite to the selection of potential mine sites in addition to visual and sampling operations. Acoustic backscatter data can be used to locate crust-covered areas on a regional scale with the understanding of acoustic properties of crust through its correlation with visual and sampling data.During an expedition that took place from January to March 2014, KIOST collected geophysical and geologic data to assess the resource potential for Fe-Mn crusts on three seamounts (guyots) in the Western Pacific. In OSM11, one of the three surveyed seamounts, three camera tows were performed to observe the distribution of Fe-Mn crusts on the summit and slopes of the seamount. Although sediments of various thicknesses generally cover most of summit region of OSM11, several regions with high backscatter signals occur on the periphery of the summit. The occurrence of Fe-Mn crusts, observed during the camera tows, on those high backscattered regions suggests that the backscatter signals of shipboard multi-beam sonar can reflect changes in the geology of the seafloor from sediment layer to Fe-Mn crust deposits. The Fe-Mn crust deposited around the summit region is worthy of notice because of its topographic characteristics, including shallow depth, flat or gentle inclined surface, and smooth relief, which are more suitable for mining operation compared to the flanks of seamount."

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

This paper describes the methods of constructing timber barricades against pillars of ore in the South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W., and discusses the behaviour of the various types of barricade alongside trucked sand filling and hydraulic stowed sand filling.Since the introduction of hydraulic stowing, cut and fill and overhand square letting methods have been used in mining the pillars. Such methods could not be used where the pillars had failed badly. The filling used is partially deslimed concentrating millresidue containing among other gangue minerals, calcite and a small amount of pyrrhotite and pyrite.The author is indebted to the mine superintendent of Broken Hill South Limited for permission to publish this paper.OLD METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING BARRICADES.Square Set Stopes.Before filling each stope the outer row of legs was lined inside with 10 in. x 2 in. boards spaced 2 in. apart. It was usual to tie the row of legs and caps together with timber dogs. As the space between the barricade and ground varied from nil to several feet, it was general practice to fill behind the lining boards. No provision was made to retain this sand during subsequent pillar stoping, consequently a run of sand right up the barricade could cause adilution of ore and serIOUS dIstortion of the barricade.

This manuscript focuses on the design and development of steels for the railroad industry and methods of testing them. Here are summarized the results of research focusing on alloy development and design, with particular focus on advanced rails and wheels. The high-performance steels are characterized for their mechanical and service characteristics. The relationship between properties and cleanliness is discussed and compared to the regular railroad steel. Some of the tests presented are standard tests that are complemented with the nonstandard test recommended by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and recommended modifications of this. The paper presents the results of metallurgical analysis, mechanical, and residual stress tests. The laboratory methods include microstructure, residual stresses, tensile, hardness, fracture toughness, and microcleanliness tests.

Subboundaries may be revealed in aluminum by the formation of pits on the surface during cooling from elevated temperatures. The pits do not form in the vicinity of high- or low-angle boundaries. They are attributed to the condensation of vacancies from a super saturation produced during coolirzg. Using the vacancy pit and Schulz X-ray techniques for observing low-angle boundaries, a study was made of the transition from the nearly perfect seed to the striated structuke characterist-ic of aluminum crystals grown from the melt. It was found that the individual striation boundaries develop by the coalescence of very small-angle boundaries, as well as by the addition of individual dislocations. Several mechanisms for the formation of striations are discussed. Evidence was found suggesting that a super-saturation of vacancies exists near a growing interface, and it is proposed that the resulting climb of existing dislocalions produces "half'-loops" at the interface, which combine to form the low-angle striation boundaries. LINEAGE, or "striation" boundaries, have been studied in detail by Teghtsoonian and Chalmers 1,2 in crystals of tin grown from the melt, and by Atwater and Chalmers3 in lead. They found that single crystals grown from the melt consist of regions which are separated by subboundaries that lie roughly parallel to the growth direction. A difference in orientation of 0.5 to 3 deg exists between the striated regions; the misorientation is such that the lattice of one region could be brought into coincidence with the lattice of its neighbor by a rotation about an axis approximately parallel to the direction of growth of the crystal. They observed an incubation distance for the formation of striations which increased with decreasing growth rate. They also found that in any crystal, the sum of all rotations of the lattice in one sense, in going from one striation to the next, is very nearly equal to the sum of all the rotations in the opposite sense. A striation boundary, which is a low-angle grain boundary, can be described as an array of dislocations. If it is assumed that suitable dislocations are introduced into the crystal during solidification, the formation of striation boundaries can be explained as a result of the migration of the disloca- tions into arrays. The formation of arrays is energetically favorable since the energy of an assembly of dislocations can be reduced by the interaction of the stress fields when a suitable array is formed. This investigation presents and interprets new information concerning the nature and origin of striation boundaries in aluminum. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Single crystals of high-purity aluminum (Alcoa 99.992 pct) were prepared by horizontal growth from the melt.'' The specimens were subsequently electropolished in a solution of 5 parts methanol to 1 part perchloric acid kept between -10° and 0°C in a bath of dry ice and alcohol. The current density was approximately 6 amps per sq in. Doherty and Davis9 have shown that in aluminum sub-boundaries with misorientations of not less than several seconds of arc may be revealed by the vacancy pit technique. During cooling from elevated temperatures pits form on electropolished surfaces of aluminum crystals as a result of the condensation of vacancies.11 Pits do not form in the vicinity of small- or large-angle grain boundaries, presumably because such boundaries act as sinks for vacancies. Boundaries of misorientations down to 3 sec of arc are revealed as pit-free regions, see Fig. 1. The Schulz X-ray technique12 was used to determine the angular misorientations of subboundaries. In this method, white radiation from a micro-focus X-ray tube is used to produce an image of a fairly large area of a single crystal surface. Subboundaries cause splitting in the diffracted image, see Fig. 2. Misorientations down to about 15 sec of arc may be observed with this technique. OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION Figure 1 shows a striated aluminum crystal grown at 10 cm per hr etched by the vacancy pit technique. An incubation distance of about 1 cm is observed before the initiation of striation boundaries. Fig. 2 is a Schulz X-ray photograph of a striated crystal similar to that shown in Fig. 1. A large area of the crystal was studied by means of a series of photographs. Fig. 2, which is a reflection from the (100) plane, included about the first 4 cm of crystal to freeze. There is an incubation distance of about 1 cm, and a distance of about 2 cm over which the angle of misorientation builds up to its final value of approximately one degree. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation designed to evaluate the stress and deformation characteristics of fully grouted roof bolts subjected to various magnitudes of end loadings. The experiment and subsequent analysis were completed, utilizing axial deformation data obtained -ultrasonically from forty-one 4-ft, grade 40 roof bolts, with a total of 132 measurement locations along the lengths of the bolts. The ultrasonic measurement instrumentation used in this investigation allowed for elongation measurements without requiring extensive bolt modifications. The results indicate that approximately 39 pct o{ the applied end load dissipated within the first 3.4 in of the bolts. However, only 3 pct of the applied load was realized beyond 28 in of the grout column. Data are presented individually for every 6-in increment of bolt length, and analysis was performed using statistical, nonlinear equations developed for 5,000 and 8,000 lb loading conditions.

Clay slurries are normally dewatered using flocculents like sulfuric acid or aluminum sulfate. This type of flocculation is based on the electrolytic mechanism. For certain clay dewatering applications, this method of flocculation is unsatisfactory. Flocculation, based on the bridging mechanism, using organic polymers has been utilized to overcome such problem situations. This method of flocculation offers solutions not possible by previous methods. Normally these flocculents are used to assist dewatering. In this case, not only is dewatering promoted, but also further processing is assisted by a change in the dilatant character of the filter cake that is formed. Discharge of filter cake is easier, extrusion of filter cake on to conveyor dryer is possible or improved, and heat transfer and drying rates of the extruded filter cake are substantially higher. Both natural and synthetic organic polymers have been utilized for this purpose. Selection, application techniques, and economics are described.

O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi produzir e caracterizar as propriedades mecânicas de um compósito abrasivo nanoestruturado no sistema D-Si, via sinterização cíclica de alta pressão e alta temperatura (APAT). A sinterização cíclica em alta pressão e alta temperatura de compósitos foi feita a partir de uma mistura de 70% diamante e 30% de Si como ligante, e com 1 a 4 ciclos de pressão (P) de 7GPa-4GPa e temperatura (T) 1600°C-300°C, para um tempo (t) de 1min. O aumento do número de ciclos gerou razoável elevação na microdureza e densidade das amostras. Os valores médios de tenacidade à fratura ficaram entre 8,86 e 9,43 MPa.m1/2. No ensaio de desgaste o aumento do número de ciclos diminuiu a perda de massa das amostras no disco de granito. As curvas termogravimétricas apresentaram uma boa estabilidade térmica dos compósitos até a temperatura de 660ºC. Finalmente, por meio deste trabalho será possível melhorar a produção de futuros compósitos abrasivos no sistema D-Si.

This document is the final report of a study aimed at defining the relative contributions of various sources of respirable airborne dust on longwall faces. In order to define the contribution of various primary sources, continuous dust level data were recorded on five longwalls for an average of five shifts at each. By analysis of these data with records of face activity, it was possible to determine the overall contribution of each of the major elements of the longwall system to overall respirable dust exposure at various face locations. Average levels were determined for roof support generated dust, conveyor and intake dust and for dust levels during various shearer activities. When average levels are compared between mines, a significant degree of consistency is noted. The next phase of the study was aimed at differentiating the various dust sources associated with the shearer. To this end 'fly cuts' varying from 6 in. to 30 in. were closely monitored as were dust levels at operators' positions over the various segments of longwall cycle. These data indicated that the clearance ring of the shearer drum as a disproportionately heavy contributor to shearer dust make. A statistical analysis of the effect of shearer haulage speed on dust make revealed that high haulage speeds are associated with low specific dust make.

Os aços inoxidáveis duplex combinam as propriedades mecânicas da ferrita com a resistência à corrosão da austenita. Quando submetido a tratamentos térmicos, pode haver precipitação de fases secundárias que prejudicam a resistência mecânica e à corrosão. O objetivo desse trabalho é avaliar a ocorrência de fases secundárias em um aço inoxidável duplex 2205 de grão ultrafino laminado a frio e submetido a temperaturas de recozimento de 600°C a 950°C por diferentes tempos (300-86400 s). Para identificação e quantificação das fases, foram utilizados microscopia eletrônica de varredura, difração de elétrons retroespalhados e difração de raios-x. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas através de ensaios de tração e teste de microdureza Vickers. A presença de fase  e  foi observada junto ao carboneto de cromo, M23C6. A fase  foi confirmada apenas depois do tratamento à 800°C. De modo geral, o aumento do tempo de recozimento leva à uma maior precipitação das fases secundárias. À medida que a precipitação ocorreu, houve aumento da fração volumétrica de austenita e redução da fração de ferrita. Embora a resistência mecânica tenha aumentado, no geral, as propriedades mecânicas, como ductilidade, são prejudicadas pela precipitação.

Introduction During the month of September, 1928 enough money had. been promised by private individuals and corporations to comply with the Research ?Foundation Act 1928 (Chapter 57, 18 George V) of the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Research Foundation (referred to below as O.R.F.) may be said to 1iave come into being at that time. Under the terms of this Act, the Treasurer of the Province was empowered to match dollar for dollar of the sums subscribed by private .corporations and individuals up to a limit of $1,000,000. However, the response to the appeal for this by the Premier of the Province, the Honourable Mr. G. Howard Ferg uson, was so exceptional that the Act was amended in 1929 so as to empower the Treasurer to increase the maximum contribution on the part of the Province to $2,500,000. In March, 1933, the Chairman of the Foundation, Sir Joseph Flaville, Bart., was able to report that, in the interval between the Premier's appeal and December 1st, 1932, private enterprise had paid ?into the treasury of the Foundation $1,670,050, and that the Provincial Treasurer had assumed responsibility for a like sum. The endownment Fund of the Foundation was, therefore. $3,340,100. This sum was ?invested a lm~ s t entirely in Government securities, in securities guar. anteed by the Government, and in 1mmicipal securities. Sir Joseph Flavelle remarked at that time that "The payment of $1,670,050 to the Endowment of the Foundation by private persons and corporations is a somewhat remarkable performance when it is remembered that for three of the five years the business of the country has been suffering from a severe depression". Since that time it has been the consistent policy of O.R.F. to live within the income derived (1) from the investment of its Endowment Fund and (2) from fees collected for services rendered.

The escalating demand for coal, in addition to the steady depletion of reserves, has produced increasingly difficult mining conditions for coal mining companies within the United States, resulting in mining above or below previously mined areas. The safe and productive extraction of coal in a multiple seam environment requires specific design technology for effective mine planning. Presently, one of the most useful design approaches for multiple-seam feasibility analysis is using numerical modeling techniques. Therefore, numerical modeling programs LaModel 2.1 and Lam2D were used to determine the feasibility of mining the Herrin (No. 6) coal seam over an existing room-and-pillar mine in the Springfield (No. 5) coal seam in the Illinois Basin.

This report describes pilot-plant studies and an economic evaluation of a process developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines, Albany Metallurgy Research Center, to produce synthetic rutile from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate. In this process, ilmenite blended with coke and lime is smelted in an electric arc furnace to separate most of the iron as salable pig iron and to form a titania-enriched slag of low iron content, which is treated with oxygen and titanium pyrophosphate. The titanium oxides are converted to crystalline rutile; the phosphate glass contains most of the associated impurities. The treated slag is ground and leached with sulfuric acid to liberate rutile crystals, which are concentrated by physical methods. In pilot testing conducted to obtain data for a cost estimation, a synthesized product containing about 88 wt-pct TiO2 and less than 2 pct FeO was extracted from a rock-type ilmenite concentrate containing about 45 wt-pct TiO2. The estimated fixed capital cost (on a mid-1975 basis) of a plant producing 500 tpd of synthetic rutile is $28,290,100. Based on 330 operating days per year, the estimated operating cost for this process is $351 per ton of synthetic rutile. The estimated selling price of synthetic rutile made from rock-type ilmenite is $344 per ton, based on a credit of $160 per ton of pig iron and a 20 pct interest rate of return on investment after taxes.

"Spirals are gravity concentrators used for the concentration of iron oxide minerals from ores. This paper presents the mineral size recovery curves observed for spirals operating in two Canadian iron ore processing plants. The size recovery curves are presented for rougher, cleaner and re-cleaner spirals. The partition curves observed for the spirals are significantly different than those observed for typical gravity concentration devices such as hydrocyclones or hydraulic classifiers. The size recovery curves show the complex behaviour of the minerals as they flow down a spiral and are analysed with a view toward process modelling and simulation. Initial simulation results show that gains in the iron recovery can be achieved by increasing the recovery of coarse iron oxide particles in the rougher spirals.INTRODUCTION Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and different heavy minerals ores (Wills, 1992). The classification of the particles in spirals is based on the combination of gravity, centrifuge, drag, lift and Bagnold forces (Atasoy and Spottiswood, 1995; Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Several papers are dedicated to the analysis of the forces acting on the particles flowing down a spiral (Das and al., 2007; Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1985; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991; Holtham , 1992). Most of these papers aim at the development of a general model for the simulation of the classification of the particles for coal ore processing. Few papers deal with the operation of spirals for processing iron ores (Hyma and Meech, 1989; Srivastava, 2001; Dallaire et al., 1978) and fewer papers present results for spirals used as cleaners following a rougher stage. Since the classification in spiral classifiers is dependent on the particle size and specific gravity a partition or performance curve commonly applied to classifiers (Mai Manga et al., 2012) is used here to analyse spiral operation. Few papers were found to describe the operation of spirals in terms of partition curves (Atasoy and Spottiswood, 1995; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991; Richards et al., 2000). Most of the investigations presented the application of a model to simulate the position of coal particles of various sizes and specific gravities along the trough of a spiral (Kapur et al., 1996; Holland-Batt and Holtham, 1991). In addition most of the available literature on spirals deals with one stage of concentration by spirals (Dallaire et al., 1978; Das and al., 2007; Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1985) while industrial circuits usually consist of rougher and cleaner spirals."
