In order to overcome some of the deficiencies associated with conventional fine coal cleaning methods, a novel process known as microbubble column flotation (MICROCEL?) was developed at Virginia Tech. This article provides an overview of recent commercialization efforts and in-plant testing of this technology. The results of the in-plant test work indicate that the MICROCEL technology offers several advantages for the upgrading of difficult to clean coals. The test data have also been used to develop guidelines for the design of coal flotation columns and to validate existing scale-up procedures.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, sulphur, SO2, off-gas, Zimplats Zimplats embarked on an off-gas sampling campaign in December 2009 to characterise the concentration of SO2 in the off-gas from their 13 MW furnace. In excess of forty isokinetic samples (US EPA Method 8) were taken over seven days. The aim of the sampling campaign was to increase the understanding of factors that influence sulphur release from sulphide concentrates in an electric furnace. Specifically, detailed monitoring was conducted over various operating conditions to evaluate: ? The relationship between SO2 and feed rate (i.e. furnace power) ? The relationship between SO2 and ingress (i.e. furnace freeboard pressure) ? The impact of concentrate bed thickness on SO2 (i.e. blacktop) ? The effect of events such as tapping and converter slag return on SO2 ? The desulphurization reactions that take place in the blacktop A model was developed to predict the SO2 content in furnace off-gas for a particular set of operating conditions. In order to evaluate the impact of random, uncorrelated changes in concentrate composition, ingress and power (feed rate) on the SO2 content of the off-gas, a Monte Carlo approach was adopted whereby concentrate composition, power, and ingress were allowed to vary randomly around selected set-points. The model is primarily based on the release of ?labile? sulphur from the partial thermal dissociation of sulphide minerals with an over-stoichiometric sulphur content (e.g., Fe7S8 decomposition to FeS and S). The main findings of this work suggest that labile sulphur does not fully account for the measured SO2 content of the off-gas, and that limited oxidation of sulphides during melting also contributes to the SO2 content. Details of sulphide oxidation reactions in the furnace remain unclear, and it is currently not possible to provide a theoretical framework for the relationship between the extent of oxidation and variables such as temperature, gas composition, particle size, and residence time in the furnace black top. Through the use of the Monte Carlo model it was, however, possible to constrain the extent of sulphide oxidation to about 1%. This work has shown in practice what was expected in concept, that SO2 in off-gas is proportional to furnace power and ingress rate. The model that was developed consistently slightly under-predicts the quantity of SO2 generated. It also highlights that more work is required to better understand the analytical methods used to analyse for SO2 in off-gas.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, as of January 1, 1954 there were 337 refineries with a total daily crude-oil throughput capacity of 8,006,897 barrels. The total daily capacity increased 368,236 barrels during the year while the total number of refineries declined 6. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil therefore increased during 1953 from 22,270 barrels to 23,759. With the exception of the Texas Inland, all refining districts reported gains in the installed capacity for the year, the largest being the Louisiana Gulf Coast with an increase of 20 percent. A total of 397,500 barrels of additional crude oil capacity was reported as under construction January 1, 1954. Accounting for 129,500 barrels of this total are facilities for 3 new refineries in North Dakota, 2 in Washington and I each in Ohio and Utah. Equipment being installed to replace existing units, totaled 180,750 barrels daily.

Introduction That the coal industry has entered a new phase in its development is now evident. Coal, besides being the chief source of heat and power, has become a potential raw material for many industries. Rapid progress has been made in the methods used in the mining and preparation of coal, and in the equipment for the burning of coal. Data of a fundamental nature relating to the composition of coal and to its transformations? during combustion and processing have also been revealed. Research, the key which has opened this new era, has already accomplished much, but it has only begun to show what it may and should be able to do. New developments of coal burning equipment, super-power plants, carbonizing and briquetting plants, hydrogenation and synthetic chemical processes, will undoubtedly have a marked influence in the post-war years on the economic welfare of many coal producing countries. Until comparatively recently, however, there has been in many branches of the coal industry a tendency to regard research as something abstruse and something which had little or no value to those managing such branches. But the fact that coal has suffered as a source of heat and energy through inroads of oil, natural gas, and water power, has made it plain to the industry that, if it is to maintain its present markets in this competitive world, much less increase them, the whole industry must be willing to follow the example of other industries and plan for the future.

Phosphate deposits in Montana , Idaho , Wyoming , and Utah are important factors in the mineral , agricultural , and industrial economy in the western part of the Nation . This report presents background information , including geology , mining , beneficiation , processing , resources , and economics , assembled to provide a comprehensive introduction to a series of four area reports . About 20 percent of the Nation's phosphate is produced from the Western field where there were 6 surface and 9 underground mines in operation in 1963 . This region also has an estimated 58 percent of the Nation's phosphate reserves , and continuing development is assured by these abundant resources and an increasing demand for phosphate products . Long range forecasts indicate that the United States will continue to use increasing amounts of both agricultural and industrial phosphate products . Beneficiation has become an important part of the phosphate processing industry , and two flotation plants and several washing plants were in operation in 1963. Recent studies by the Bureau of Mines Metallurgy Research Center , Albany , Oreg . , have been directed toward developing flotation processes applicable to treatment of marginal phosphate rock . Other Bureau of Mines research is being directed toward improved methods of ore recovery , ground control , and mining .

Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.

OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine is a Sublevel cave mine located in South Australia, approximately 160 km north of the regional centre of Port Augusta. Carrapateena commenced underground development in 2016, with production commencing in 2019 and ramping up to 4.25 Mtpa by December 2020. In pursuit of continual improvement, the Carrapateena mining team sought to identify how it could better interrogate its current productivity levels and its drivers (root causes). During this process the team were confronted by a disconcerting number of different opinions (which often conflicted) on our actual productivity performance which led to a need for review. Although reliable data and a well-designed time utilisation model (TUM) existed, it was still unclear what actions needed to be put in place to improve productivity. This was for the following reasons: • Data sources were disparate unless significant effort was applied to compile them. • Data sources were not available in a format that could be easily viewed or analysed. • General understanding of the data which was collected and how it could be used was poor. • Process of regularly analysing performance and forming tangible actions to improve was lacking rigour. A project was then started with the goal to fix the areas stated above. An initial requirements gathering exercise was undertaken to identify key data sources for site which returned a staggering 42 known systems which were then shortlisted to the key systems that contained operational data and could generate tangible improvements when analysed. This paper discusses the approach to selecting the OZ Minerals Insights Hub as the chosen platform, and the effort and collaboration between cross-functional departments that was involved in transforming the data so it could be displayed in a useful way. The data sources identified included a fleet management system, two planning databases, a control system historian, and a mobile fleet machine data system. New processes were also introduced to digitally capture daily commentary; this was achieved utilising SharePoint Forms. Data pipelines were then developed in the Insights Hub platform to automate the ingestion and transformation of the raw mining data into curated data models for end user consumption. Tableau dashboard packages have been created to support facilitation of short interval control, daily review meetings, and weekly review meetings as well as data analysis of key equipment and locations. These dashboards visualise the mining data models in a form that provides the user a clear picture of what has occurred, why it has occurred, and where to focus improvement efforts. This has resulted in a team which is more accountable, more equipped to assess the root cause of performance, and more regularly able to make data driven decisions. The next step? To build this out from Mine to Mill and create a data indexing tool which will drive self-service reporting, a data agnostic platform and predictive tools that help our people continue to be one step in front.

An extensive investigation has been made of the deformation behavior associated with the Fe3Si super-lattice using transmission electron microscopy techniques. Above 243°K the stress-strain curve exhibits three stages. Stage I occurs at a very low stress level and is related to the generation of perfect superlat-tice dislocations. Stage II is characterized by an extremely rapid rate of work hardening and is associated with the Taylor type locking of these superlattice dislocations. Finally Stage III is related to dynamic recovery processes since the work hardening rate is very small. Below 243ºK, only Stage I is observed, but it occurs at a much higher stress level. This latter observation is related to the generation of imperfect dislocations in Stage I with the consequent production of second nearest neighbor antiphase boundaries. The reason for this is that insufficient thermal energy is available at these low temperatures to generate the complete and perfect superlattice dislocations. It has been shown that the fully ordered FeCo alloys, i.e., those possessing the B2 type structure, exhibit three distinct stages of work hardening whereas the corresponding disordered alloys show only one.&apos;" This difference in behavior between the disordered and ordered alloys has been attributed to the fact that dislocations in the former case travel only as ordinary 1/2ao(111) types whereas in the latter case the move through the lattice as coupled 1/2a0(111) dislocations separated by an antiphase boundary (APB), i.e., the so-called superlattice dislocation. Although some preliminary work has been carried out concerning plastic deformation in ordered alloys possessing the DO3 type superlattice,3 no detailed analysis similar to that described in Refs. 1 and 2 has been attempted. Specifically, it has been suggested that the superlattice dislocation in this particular type structure should consist of four ordinary 1/2ao<111> types bound together by first and second nearest-neighbor APB&apos;s. Fe3A1 and Fe3Si are the two classic alloys possessing the DO3 type lattice; however, because of the somewhat higher ordering energies associated with the FesSi alloy, which in turn assures that dislocations will travel through the lattice as perfect superlattice dislocations under at least some conditions, it was chosen for the present investigation. Because of the extreme brittleness of Fe3Si, all deformation was done in compression. Stress-strain curves were obtained using both polycrystalline samples as well as single crystals. In the latter case the crystals were oriented so that deformation could be controlled either by single or double slip. They were then wafered parallel to and at various angles to the operative slip planes. These wafers were in turn examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques in order to determine the extent of the interaction from the dislocation configuration contained therein. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were arc melted under helium from electrolytic iron of greater than 99.90 wt pct purity and transistor grade silicon of 99.99 wt pct purity. A typical analysis of interstitial impurities showed 120 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and 65 ppm C Because of the extremely low ductility of the Fe3Si alloys, it was necessary to spark cut 0.230-in. diam polycrystalline cylinders 0.400 in. long from arc-melted fingers using a thin-walled brass tube as a cutting tool. The polycrystalline alloys could not be recrystallized since very little strain was induced in preparation. However they were annealed at 1273°C for 15 min in evacuated vycor capsules to relieve any cooling stresses that may have developed during solidification and then air cooled. The resulting grain size of the alloy was 0.50 mm. According to warlimont4 1273ºC is just within the single phase field where FesSi possesses the DO3 type lattice. In addition because of this high critical ordering tem-ature, air cooling from this temperature was believed sufficient to fully order all of the Fe3Si samples used in the present investigation. For the same reason, no attempt was made to achieve any degree of disorder by quenching. In fact, rapid quenching from 1123°K caused cracking. Such cracking was first suggested by sato5 with respect to the experimental observations of Glaser and Ivanick.6 Single crystal compression specimens were spark cut from single crystal ingots grown in a Bridgman type furnace. The iron and silicon for the crystals was prealloyed by arc-melting two 130-g buttons which were cut into small pieces before remelting in the furnace. This procedure resulted in a long-range inhomogeneity of 0.5 at. pct Si between the top and bottom of the 2-in.-long single crystal ingot, which was assumed to be negligible in the present investigation. The single crystals, after orienting and spark-cutting, were about 0.37 in. by 0.37 in. in cross section and about 0.5 in. long. True stress-strain curves were obtained using an Instron Tensile Testing machine in conjunction with techniques described previously. 1,7 The strain rate was 0.05 in. per in. per min. Prior to testing, the ends of all the compression cylinders were hand polished using a special jig to insure parallelism after which the sides of the samples were electrochemically polished to eliminate stress risers and to facilitate slip line observations. Any organization that subjects its activities to a continuous improvement methodology, aiming to optimize their processes and services, must be able to adequately measure the results of the implemented changes to pursue better outcomes. This is no different for mining companies. When it comes to blasting, an accurate fragmentation analysis can correlate blast design and rock mass parameters to particle size distribution, enabling us to further analyze the correspondence of specific design patterns, applied to specific rock mass properties and the result in measured fragmentation indicators. Over time, many tools were developed for us to obtain PSD data, albeit each of them had their own shortcomings. The first ones to be developed involved photographing the muck pile including a scale object, uploading those photos to a PC, and using specialized software to analyze each one. As a result, analysts would get a PSD curve that served as reference for the performance of the blast. This method, which is still used, has major shortcomings. The most obvious one is that it is only able to capture a slice of the blast, which corresponds to the exposed section of the muck pile the analyst has access to, and even there its reach is limited to the areas that are safe for getting close enough for placing the scale, which are not many. Consequently, this is a very limited way to get a fragmentation performance assess for a blast. Currently, autonomous systems are capable of taking continuous pictures of the muck pile. Installed on a shovel, conveyor belt or crusher feed, these systems can take a continuous stream of pictures that are later analyzed automatically without the need of human intervention. These systems greatly increase the volume of data and, consequently, we have a PSD curve that is more representative of the blast performance. However, this technology still had issues when trying to sample front end loaders mining operations or getting results from underground blasting due to the inherent difficulties of these operations. New algorithms used for capturing and processing data for front end loaders can overcome the harsh environment of their operations and produce PSD data in high vibration environments and difficult mining angles. For underground mining, algorithms can be used to sample each truck exiting the mine, giving a reliable source of fragmentation analysis that can be traced back to their stope of origin. The development of this technology extends the existing system’s capabilities and helps us in our efforts to improve fragmentation results with each blast.

The rock mass classification systems were developed for different functions, including support selection, excavation method selection and the determination of rock mass engineering properties for excavation design, among others. This explains in part why we have several rock mass classification systems. It is often cautioned that the rock mass classifications are to be used for preliminary excavation support design, but this caution is now often overlooked and detail/final support design based on the rock mass classification systems. This paper advocates differentiating between rock mass classification for pre-excavation support planning and rock mass classification for at-face excavation performance assessment. It is concluded that most at-face excavation performance problems are attributable to confusing the virgin rock mass rating with the rock mass rating on exposure during excavation, and that this observation is independent of the method of excavation. Procedures are then presented for virgin rock mass rating and for at-face rock mass rating/assessment during excavation.

Air pollutants in exhaust gas produced from LP-gas (propane) were studied using both laboratory engines and vehicles. The objective of the study was to evaluate engine parameters relating to the advantageous use of propane as a low-pollution fuel. Some comparisons are made between gasoline, natural gas, and propane. Results show that engines can operate over a wider range of A/F with minimum carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission when using propane than when using gasoline. Mixture enrichment using propane is unnecessary during cold starts, thereby eliminating the emission penalty during warmup. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emission using propane are unaffected by ambient temperature. The photochemical reactivity of hydrocarbon emission is considerably lower with propane than with gasoline.

Most zinc concentrates contain some silver and varying amounts of such valuable trace elements as gold, indium, germanium and gallium. With increasing similarities in plant installations, the predominance of electrolyte process and the increasing environmental constraints on iron disposal, it is essential that zinc smelters optimize the recovery of any valuable elements in their feed stocks. The process options, to date, of smelting, flotation or leaching of silver-rich leach residues cannot be applied economically to all installations. It is therefore necessary that new innovative processes, to recover silver and other valuable metals from relatively low grade feeds, be developed. This paper attempts to place this strategy in the context of today&apos;s constraints and will also provide a simple evaluation tool for any process alternatives.

Tailings management trade-off studies are done for all mining projects. There is wide variability in these studies as their approach, details and outcomes are determined by the experience and focus of the project team. While some of these approaches may consider the whole life cycle of the project others may focus only on capital and operating costs and direct environmental impacts. A complete life cycle approach is not standard practice. This paper describes an approach to implementation of formalised life cycle assessment (LCA) following ISO 14044 to tailings management trade-off studies. The paper describes the implementation of the methodological framework for the LCA, ie goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory analysis, life cycle impact assessment and life cycle interpretation. This standardised approach to implementing tailings management trade-off studies following the LCA approach will contribute to the state-of-the-practice in sustainable mine development.

A maximum acceptable level of 2 mg/m3 of respirable coal mine dust in active mine workings was established, effective January 1, 1973, under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. It is generally agreed that, as a result, coal mines in the United States are significantly less dusty than they were a decade ago. For example, operators of underground mining machines were exposed to between 3.9 and 6.5 mg/m3 of respirable coal mine dust during 1968-69; now they are exposed to between 1.3 and 1.8 mg/m3. Also, the incidence of underground sections cited for exceeding acceptable levels of respirable coal mine dust decreased during 1976-78, and the vast majority of all working sections are now in compliance. This improvement is very substantial by world standards. It must be regarded as a creditable accomplishment by the coal mine operators, federal agencies, and mine workers involved. Most of the improvement has been brought about by the use of existing technology to control, suppress, and collect respirable coal mine dust. Research and development by the Bureau of Mines has contributed significantly to the accomplishment by improving the methods for sampling, control, suppression, and collection.

"At an average of 90.3% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), Zincor’s zinc recovery was well below the industry standard of 96%. The losses through the residues, in particular the iron residue, were the biggest contributors to the overall zinc loss. It was believed that this loss could be decreased with the implementation of seed recycling. A plant trial was run to test the implementation of a seed recycle. The rate of seed addition through recycle was increased over a 4-week period. The presence of seed decreased the insoluble zinc loss by providing additional surface area for iron to precipitate onto, and reducing coating of unleached neutralising agent. The soluble zinc loss was also decreased at low and moderate seed recycle volumes. The improvement was attributed to agglomeration growth of the recycled particles, which improves the dewatering characteristics of the precipitate. In contrast, the soluble zinc loss increased at high seed recycle rates. This result was attributed to particle crowding and a low wash ratio.INTRODUCTION The Zincor refinery, which closed in December 2011, was situated just outside of Springs in the Gauteng Province of South Africa and employed the conventional Roast-Leach-Electrowin process, which accounts for 75 to 80% of the annual primary zinc production in the world. The refinery fed up to 220 000 t/a of zinc sulphide concentrate. The major portion of the raw material was sourced in Southern Africa from the Rosh Pinah and Black Mountain mines. Between 20 000 and 40 000 t/a of material was imported to make up the deficit and to improve the grade of the feed material. The iron contained in the zinc concentrates, at an average of 6.03% (for the period of 1 January 2009 to 30 September 2011), resulted in the formation of zinc ferrite during roasting, which is insoluble under atmospheric leach conditions. At Zincor, most of the zinc ferrite was dissolved in the residue treatment plant at elevated temperature and high acid strength. The leach liquor from this aggressive leach contained between 15 to 30 g/L of iron, mostly in the ferric form, and was known as the hot iron solution (HIS). The presence of iron in the liquor had an adverse effect on the zinc operation, particularly on the current efficiency in the electrowinning circuit. Therefore the iron needed complete removal."

Although laboratory studies of tin flotation have been reported as far back as the 1920`s(1), the commercial application has only been realized within the past few years(2,3). The principal technical difficulty in the application of the process to tin ores has not been in the flotation of cassiterite itself, this mineral being readily recoverable with the common collectors, including xanthates with heavy metal ion activation(2). The difficulty has been with the depression of the gangue minerals commonly associated with tin ores, and to a lesser extent with the problems of collector consuming semi-colloidal minerals which are in some cases present. The application of sulfosuccinamate collectors to flotation of cassiterite from the Catavi, Bolivia, slime tailings has recently been described(3). The investigation which led to this successful process development included studies of other samples of gravity plant tailings as well as of lode tin ores. A common flowsheet with few significant variations was applied to most of these ore samples with acceptable results. In the following the process is described and the results of its application to samples from Bolivia and elsewhere given. Among the factors considered are: gangue depression, particle size and slime effects, and reagent and pulp density levels.

"New metal working processes, such as the mashy-state mixing, mashy-state forging, mashy-state rolling and mashy-state extrusion are developed and applied to manufacture the so-called particle reinforced metals, fiber reinforced metals, particle reinforced cladding metals and so forth. These metal-ceramics composites are made of metal sheets, metal powders, ceramics particles and ceramics fibers. The mashy-state processes are also used to work those composites into bars, wires, tubes, plates, sheets, machine parts and other products. The working conditions necessary to manufacture sound composite products are clarified and the mechanical properties of the products are investigated. Through the investigation, it becomes clear that the mashy-state processes are useful and effective to manufacture metal-ceramics composites. It is al so known that these processes may be applied in various ways to development of new metal matrix compounds. IntroductionThe so-called metal-ceramics composites and processes to manufacture them are now being widely investigated in order to comply with increasing demands for new materials with novel and excellent mechanical properties and functions. The metal-ceramics composites are expected to have superior characteristics with respect to the elastic modulus, hardness, anti-wear resistance, high temperature strength and other mechanical properties to those of conventional metallic materials.The present authors ha v e been investigating into new metal working processes which are based upon the characteristics of metals and their alloys in the mashy-state. In the mashy-state, the metal (or alloy) includes both of the solid and liquid components. According to the fact that the partial melting takes place and the liquid component usually exists at grain boundaries, the metal in the mashy-state has quite different mechanical properties from those of the metal in the solid-state. Because of that the bonding force among grains is very weak due to the partial melting occurred at grain boundaries, the mashy metal has distinctively low flow-stress and high deformability. The mashy metal splits into grains or particles and sticks to others very easily. It is so soft as to be stirred up just like a lump of sherbet, but it is sufficiently viscous to be mixed up with other materials, such as ceramics particles and ceramics short-cut fibers."

Bench scale and pilot plant research was conducted using dolomites (CaO,MgO) lime as the basic additive in the preparation of self-fluxed pellets from a typical magnetic taconite concentrate (5.57 S_2). The specific objective of this investigation was to ascertain the viability of the magnesia lime pellets in high temperature oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Pellet basicity and induration temperature were major parameters affecting fired pellet quality; temperatures ranging from 1,200° to 1,250" C appeared to be the most favorable for production of self-fluxed pellets with basesities (B) above 1.0. Comparison of the mechani¬cal and metallurgical properties of regular (acid) and self-fluxed pellets (B 1.55) produced under similar conditions in a modified grate pelletizing machine showed that the self-fluxed pellets were more resistant to abrasion and to high and low temperature reduction disintegration, an important consideration in commercial application. The Plus 3 mesh Linder index increased from 68 percent (regular pellets) to over 90 percent (self-fluxed pellets). The reducibility and swelling indices of the self-fluxed pellets were found to be comparable to the regular pellets.

SOME years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.1 The life of dies was considered in relation to the casting temperature, the material used for the die, and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mech-anism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines.
