Introduction The circumstances under which the gold mining industry was forced to curtail operations a few years ago are well known to all. The effect of those circumstances is particularly noticeable when one enters some of the larger mills that were designed, in better times, to treat relatively large tonnages. On their grinding floors one will observe that a number of grinding units are lying idle, and the ravages of rust are everywhere in evidence. The same applies to other equipment throughout these mills. In 1941, we found it necessary to reduce tonnage considerably in the Wright-Hargreaves mill. With the assumption that a lower tonnage would be of long duration, we began to focus our attention on some of the idle equipment with a view to re-arrangement of the flow-sheet for greater economy of operation. In an article by the writer published in the Engineering and Mining Journal (March, April, and May issues, 1939) , it was pointed out that in designing this mill there was a very limited floor space available. The choice of thickening equipment was imposed solely by the necessity for space: conservation. Thickening by gravity would have required 5,000 square feet of floor space, whereas Genter thickeners required only 1,200 square feet. As a consequence, the Genters were chosen. The decision to add flotation to the circuit was made primarily to save space. On a cost-plus-tail basis, 80 to 100 hours agitation on all pulp would produce similar overall results, but would require much more space.

"This paper reviews the evolving Ontario mining regime for mining industry-Aboriginal engagement and its apparent alignment with court decisions, domestic law, emerging international norms, mining industry rules, and mining firm-Aboriginal agreements, drawing on publicly available commentary from government officials, the private sector, and Indigenous communities. This paper provides a preliminary analysis of the potential implications of the new regime, especially for the mining industry and Aboriginal communities and, on that basis, discusses possible future developments.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article analyse le régime minier de l’Ontario pour l’engagement entre l’industrie minière et les Autochtones et son harmonisation avec les décisions des tribunaux, le droit interne, les nouvelles normes internationales, les règles de l’industrie minière et les ententes compagnies minières- Autochtones en se basant sur des commentaires, disponibles publiquement, d’officiels gouvernementaux, du secteur privé et des communautés autochtones. "INTRODUCTION Secondary recovery of oil by water-flooding is practiced more extensively in North Texas than in any other section of the State, and the progress and experience of the operations in that area are of continuing interest to all branches of the oil industry. The first Bureau of Mines report on water flooding in North Texas 7/ chronicled the activities from December 7, 193f', when the Railroad Commission of Texas granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into an oil-bearing sand, through 1944. This second report has been prepared as a supplement to Report of Investigations 3906 to show the progress and expansion of water-flooding. The format of this report is almost identical with what of report of Investigations 3906, except for a few miner changes. For the sake of brevity, certain basic information contained on the first report has not been repealed, and the reader is urged to consider the two reports as corporation writings.The North Texas area, as encompassed by the two reports, corresponds Railroad Commission of Texas Districts 7P and 9. Oil-development operations in the two districts, since oil was discovered in 1904, have resulted in the recovery of approximately 1,400,000,000 barrels of oil from a proved area that has been estimated to exceed 413,000 acres. During October barrels of oil was produces by primary and secondary-recovery methods from 1,746 flowing wells and 25,211 pumping wells, a daily average 6.6 barrels per well. Of this total volume of oil recovered in October 1947, 47,965 barrels (0.87 percent) was recovered from leases on which water-flooding operations were in progresses."

In this paper, the effects of dynamic loads on the geometry of the failure zone occurring around underground openings, excavated in deep and massive rock masses, have been investigated. Following an elasto-plastic stress analysis of a two-dimensional underground opening under static conditions, dynamic loads have been applied. In the static and dynamic analyses, FLAC2D computer program has been utilized. Maximum ground acceleration value is selected as an input parameter. An index determining the relative size of the yield zone around the opening has been used for comparison of instabilities. In diesem Bericht wurden die Auswirkungen von dynamischen Lasten, auf die Geometrie der Bruchzone in der Umgebung von Untertagehohlräumen, die in tiefen und massiven Gebirge aufgefahren wurden, untersucht. Nach einer elasto-plastischen Spannungsanalyse eines zwei-dimensionalen Untertagehohlraumes unter statischen Beanspruchungen, wurden dynamische Lasten aufgebracht. Für die statischen und dynamischen Analysen wurde das FLAC2D Computer Programm verwendet. Die maximale Bodenbeschleunigung wurde als Eingabe Parameter gewählt. Zum Vergleichen der Unstabilitäten wurde ein Index verwendet, der die relative Grösse der Bruchzone in der Umgebung des Hohlraumes bestimmt. Dans ce papier, l’influence des chargements dynamique sur la géométrie de la zone en rupture observée autour des cavités profondes excavées dans des massifs rocheux ont été étudiées. Des chargements dynamiques ont été appliqués, dans le cas d’une modélisation bi-dimensionnelle de l’excavation d’une cavité profonde, sur la base d’une analyse élastoplastiques des contraintes en conditions statiques. Le code de calcul FLAC2D a été utilisé pour les analyses statiques et dynamiques. La valeur maximale de l’accélération du sol est choisie comme paramètre d’entrée. Un indice déterminant la taille relative de la zone sollicitée autour de la cavité a été utilisé pour comparer les différentes instabilités.

"With the increasing acceptance of the Thixoforging process in the last few years, also the technical and commercial requirements for this forming technology and its components increased. So far, a great deal of work has been done in the development of an efficient process and control design. However, less attention has been paid to the development of new specifically tailored aluminum wrought alloys for this specific manufacturing process. · In this paper a new AlMgSi-alloy (A6082), optimized for the Thixoforging process, is presented. In the first part, the technical potential of the new alloy is specified by its microstructural evolution and flow characteristics in the semi-solid state. In the second part, the mechanical properties of thixoforged components of different conventional AlMgSi-alloys a (e illustrated · and compared to the new alloy.IntroductionSemi-solid metalworking, also known as semi-solid forming, is a hybrid manufacturing method that incorporates elements of both casting and forging. The key to the process relies on the peculiar flow behavior of slurries containing non-dendritic solid, which was first studied at the MIT by Flemings et al. [i], in the early 1970s. It was discovered, that if an alloy is uniformly stirred during freezing, discrete rounded particles of solid are formed rather than the normal dendrites, and the slurry is highly fluid (-5 Pas) up at least 50% solid. In addition, these slurries posses thixotropic flow characteristics: the viscosity is dependent on sheare rate and time. The more vigorously they are stirred, the more fluid they become. However, on standing the viscosity recovers and the material stiffens (-106 Pas).The semi-solid forming process exploits this phenomenon. In a first step, the required non-dentritical- microstructure is obtained by mechanical or electromagnetic stirring during primary solidification of the alloy. The stirred slurry is generally fully solidified as a feedstock billet and - in a second process step - reheated above the solidus temperature into the semi-solid state. In this condition, the thixotropic properties permit the material to be handled by robotic devices and transferred to a die (Thixocasting) or subjected to- a forming process by means of forging (Thixoforging). Owing to the shear stress which acts on the semisolid material during forming operation, the viscosity of the material is reduced attaining so the desired fluid-like flow characteristics."

An analysis of low-voltage shielded trailing cables is performed to develop a method for calculating the differences in operating costs between shielded and non-shielded cables. Two types of shield constructions are considered (SH-C and SH-D) for the three major underground coal mining methods. Data from laboratory and in-mine testing are presented in addition to an analysis of safety benefits. Recommendations for further investigations are proposed. Example calculations with sensitivity analyses are presented. Recommendations for further investigation include costs impact considerations.

Jigging is a separtion process that has already been described by Agricola in 1556. Fine size material is normally treated in a hutch jigging process, in which the heavy particles are penetrating the jigging bed and are recovered in the hutch. In this process, a ragging consisting of the same or higher specific gravity particles is inserted upon the screen. The ragging is used mainly as a valve to maintain a constant upward flow of the water. Since the heavy particles should pass easily into the hutch, the ragging particles are up to ten times larger than the maximum feed size (1). In the fine size range - 1 mm the performance of jigs is mainly insufficient; some of the low density particles percolate the ragging while the hutch water flow prevents the fine heavy particles from entering the bed (2). By giving a thin layer of particles, which posesses a density sensitivity in case of certain adjustment of flow conditions, directly on the screen, the precision of separation can be increased. Stroke length and frequency have to be adjusted to give this filter layer a homogenous porosity between 60 and 70% during the pulsion phase, and the "en masse" lifting of the bed, as it is known in jigging of coarser material, has to be prevented (3). In this case, the jig cycle is only of minor influence.

Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites that contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of post- magmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action of residual peg- matitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw material for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of the Searles Lake deposits, brines became new sources of lithium, and, today, two brine deposits satisfy nearly one-half of the free world demand for lithium chemicals. Indeed, lithium production from pegmatites has been superseded by brines sources. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, NV, have been exploited since 1964 by Cyprus Foote Mineral Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. In Chile, Sociedad Chilena de Litio Ltda., an affiliate of Cyprus Minerals Company, is now producing lithium carbonate from the brines of the Salar de Atacama. Recently identified brine deposits suggest that these may well become the prime sources of lithium chemicals. In Bolivia, the government is negotiating the rights to exploit the brines of the Salar de Uyuni. The Salar del Hombre Muerto in Argentina is being evaluated as a future center of chemical production. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover Formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field have been defined as important resources of lithium. In Tibet, high concentrations of lithium have been reported in several saline lakes. In the People's Republic of China, lithium may be produced from the brines of the Dabusan playa in the Qinghai Basin. The 1950s saw a great number of lithium companies develop. However, following the termination of the Atomic Energy Commission purchase program in 1959, several companies, such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp., were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminumpotlines), the lithium industry grew steadily. With the potential application of lithium metal in batteries, nuclear reactors, and fuel cells, a steady growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Presently identified reserves and production capacity are sufficient to satisfy the conventional market growth of lithium.

Security engineering is similar to other forms of engineering – the design is guided by the loads, materials, and desired function. For facility design, the load is the threat. Facilities that are designed with considerations for explosive hazards are designed with a shot, or series of shots, of a given size and distance from key locations. These facilities range from office buildings and industrial sites in developed nations to military and police stations in contingency areas. The challenge is the design shots are not often communicated to facility owners and managers. If the hazards change, whether it’s due to an increased capacity to cause damage by a threat or a decrease in capacity by a structure, not knowing the design shot means not knowing if security design needs to change. Blast modeling is an engineering tool that can be used to reverse engineer what a facility is suitable for, as well as be a tool for modifying security design for new conditions. This paper will examine military and civilian examples, including a case study of a military facility that did not know their as-built conditions and had to be rapidly closed; due to the determination their security engineering shortcomings could not be mitigated.

In 1910 the Richmond-Eureka Co. suspended all operations except small-scale leasing, but company and other geologists contended that the El Dorado dolomite would also carry ore in its continuation from fault block north and northeast of the productive old working. The company began to explore the fault block in 1923 by diamond drilling from the,900 level of the Locan shaft, but for various reasons the hole was drilled to a depth of only 2 feet and was then abandoned. Eureka Corporation, Ltd., planned an extensive diamond-drilling program, which included four deep diamond-drill holes, one designated ""A"" fig. if it is to be drilled from the surfaced, and three designated ""E"", ""C"" and ""D"" figs land to be drilled from the 900 level of the Locan shaft. Of these only B and C were completed by the company. Hole C was a contribution,of the hole started by the, started by the Richmond Eureka Co. The site for hole D (figs. 1 and 2) was prepared, but the hole was not drilled. Both B and C holes penetrated sulfide ore carrying good percentages of zinc, lead, gold, and silver. The ore bodies were 40 feet thick and were found approximately 1,400 feet below the 900 level of Locan shaft.On the basis of the very favorable results obtained from the drilling program, the Eureka Corporation planned extensive development of the property and in 1942 commenced sinking the Fad shaft (figs. 1 and 2). The shortage of equipment and materials brought on by the war and difficulties with water in the shaft greatly hindered progress. However, early in 1943 the Eureka Cor¬poration, Ltd., of Canada submitted to the War Production Board a proposal for developing the mine and milling 500 tons of zinc-lead ore a day. The proposal involved an expenditure of $2,890,750."

"INTRODUCTION Abstract Tankhouse iron control through application of new treatment technology to mitigate conventional bleeding losses is considered. Implementation is discussed and the treatment economics explored. A representative case is assessed. Treatment benefits and application drivers for specific scenarios are noted. Background Hydrometallurgical ore processing has become a significant metal extraction/production avenue in recent decades. In copper mining; the focus for this examination, around 25% of global primary copper production and nearly 50% of US production result from various hydrothermal leaching extraction approaches coupled to Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) metal production. Generally such processing is favored over pyrometallurgical processes for lower ore grades and as such is finding growing use and is expected to remain a key processing route looking forward with average world-wide ore grades falling as known ore reserves become exhausted. Target Problem And Motivation In hydrometallurgical processing the production circuit may be thought of as a chain of interlocked recirculation loops (Figure 1). Leaching dissolves the target metal from the ore along with other ore components which contaminate the Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS). Iron is a common component in copper ores and, as a result, occurs fairly ubiquitously in copper Pregnant Leach Solutions (PLS) generated by leaching. Leached components migrate through the production circuit from left to right (Figure 1) through a net combination of chemical and mechanical transport mechanisms. Selectivity at the recirculation loop interfaces tends to retard rejected component migration through the production process. As a result, overall relative contaminant migration fluxes are slower than the target metal (copper) and the contaminants tend to build up relative to copper in the more upstream portions of the processing circuit over time with iron often being a significant contaminant. Further, while copper is continuously removed from the system in appreciable amounts, little contaminant exit occurs and the absolute contaminant amounts and concentrations also increase throughout the EW circuit over time."

The objectives of the work described in this report are to determine the communications requirements and need for communications, both for voice and control, on longwalls, and to make recommendations for longwall communications equipment and systems. These recommendations are designed to guide the future development of longwall communications. Information necessary for the accomplishment of this work has been gathered by a series of visits to longwall mines and discussions with longwall mine operators, as well as with suppliers of longwall communications and mining equipment and with Bureau of Mines personnel. In addition, it has proven possible, through personal interviews and literature evaluation, to gain an understanding of the experience and attitudes towards longwall communications in countries where longwall mining is far more widespread than in the U.S., namely the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Belgium.

Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. Consequently, the free-body diagram is that of a uniformly loaded cantilever beam with an inter-mediate support, as shown in Fig. 3. "Heat transfer and friction in hot flat rolling have traditionally been characterised by an average heat transfer coefficient (h) and an average friction coefficient (p.). However, the presence of oxide scales and asperities at the interface question the use of such averages. The apparent irregularity and lack of pattern of interactions at the interface has prompted this present investigation to move away from averaged h and 11 values, and to study their local evolution based on probabilistic rules. The approach is based on the probability of finding the workpiece surface in a specific configuration at a particular instance of time in the roll gap. These rules are based on observations of surface phenomena such as scale behaviour during hot rolling. The model is implemented using user-subroutines integrated with the commercially available finite element program ABAQUS™. The results show the strong dependence of h and u on the local scale interactions. In particular, the effect of scale thickness, material behaviour and processing conditions on the evolution of hand 11 are discussed. Finally, the development of a Cellular Automata based Finite Element (CAFE) model is proposed to model the combined interfacial phenomenon of friction and heat transfer at the tool-work piece interface.IntroductionIntricate interactions between process variables in hot rolling of steels make it a challenge to the modelling community. For a given material and geometry combination, reducing interfacial power losses can increase the efficiency of the rolling process. The roll-strip interface, therefore, forms the critical zone and is currently the domain of intense investigation, especially to characterize interfacial frictionl • 2 and heat transfer3 • 4 . These interfacial phenomena are inter-related and cannot be studied in isolation. However, very few mathematical models4 • 5 combine an analysis of friction and heat transfer and deformation of the strip-roll interface taking into account the role of asperities and oxide scales."

The increasing use of hydrogen fluoride (annual consumption now exceeds 500,000 pounds (1)4/) directly and its occurrence as a byproduct of the utilization of fluorine compounds in the mineral industries, especially in metallurgical processes and in the refining of petroleum products, has aroused interest in its toxicity, and a brief review of the literature, with special reference to the hazard of poisoning in the mineral industries, seems to be opportune. Recently, residents in the vicinity of aluminum plants have been complaining of injury to livestock and vegetation as well as to their own health from the gases discharged into the air during operation of the plants, hydrofluoric acid gas apparently being the offender. The comparatively recent utilization of hydrofluoric acid in the alkylation process for the production of high-octane gasoline has raised the question of the hazard of poisoning in the petroleum Industry. In addition, the use of fluorine-containing refrigerants has extended the potential al exposure outside of industry (2).

The Bureau of Mines used high-temperature reduction roasting, magnetic separation, acid-leaching, and autoclave precipitation processes to recover iron and manganese from brown Cuyana range ores of Minnesota. Wet magnetic separation concentrated over 90 percent of the iron in 3 of 4 ores as high grade products analyzing 74 to 85 percent iron, 2.5 to 6 percent manganese, and 3 to 10 percent SiO2. The nonmagnetic fractions were leached with dilute sulfuric acid extracting 83 to 93 percent of the contained manganese and small amounts of iron. The leach solutions contained Mn-to-Fe and Mn-to-SiO2 ratios favorable enough for possible consumption in metallurgical mane operations. Exceptionally pure Mn solutions were achieved by pressure precipitation of the remaining iron in an autoclave followed by lime precipitation of silica and alumina.

This study is a survey of supply and demand for minerals, metals, alloys, and compounds used by the chemical industries in the Ohio River Basin (ORB) area of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia during 1967. Data for the study were obtained from completed questionnaires received from chemical manufacturers and from interviews with officials of chemical companies and mineral producers and distributors. The information includes kind, quality, quantity, values, sources, specifications, uses, and methods of transportation. Results of the study show that of the total value of mineral materials consumed by the chemical industry, manufacture of inorganic chemicals consumed 46 percent; fertilizers, 22 percent; and soaps and detergents, 19 percent. Fifteen commodities accounted for 91 percent of the total value of mineral materials consumed. Five of these--phosphates, potash, salt, sulfur, and titanium dioxide--accounted for 59 percent of the total.

Geologically, the Williston Basin is a large structural depression of sedimentary rock in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota and Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. The approximate It-mite of the basin are shown on figure 1; it is roughly circular with a diameter of about 400 miles and contains approximately 120,000 square miles. Although the petroleum potentialities in this area had long been recognized, it had not been vigorously prospected by the petroleum industry because of its geographic location, rigorous winters, depths to possibly productive zones, difficult geological problems, and the fact that more seemingly favorable areas were available for prospecting. With the discovery of oil near Edmonton, Alberta, in the prolific Devonian reefs, an incentive was given to explore for oil in the southeast extension of the same sedimentary trough, the Williston Basin. The Virden field discovery in southwestern Manitoba in January 1951 was a direct result of this southeastward movement. Discovery of this shallow field was followed soon after by discovery of' deep production on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota at Clarence Iverson No. 1 well. North Dakota then became the twenty-seventh petroleum-producing State.

The Health Tracking project is one of five projects being undertaken as part of the Minerals Industry Cooperation Initiative (MICI) û a national initiative sponsored by the Minerals Council of Australia. The aim of the Health Tracking project is to assess the practicality of ways to demonstrate the monitoring of hazardous exposures and the occurrence of related occupational illness and disease and development of management systems and strategies at a national level. This second stage of the project will be completed in 2005 and will cover four areas: pilot development of a comprehensive job exposure matrix (JEM) for the minerals industry; development of both proactive and reactive occupational illness and disease metrics; recommendations regarding appropriate health tracking models; and provision of best practices guidelines for management of occupational health. The synergies between these areas will establish the path towards an effective national occupational health surveillance system and the development of effective prevention strategies and policies.

With the ever increasing consumption of mineral commodities, the vital question is not whether sufficient mineral quantities will be available, but rather can the known existing low grade resources be mined economically. Conventional conveyor systems are being used in some open pit mines to decrease haulage costs. n an effort, to take this concept one stop further, this contract study examines the use of a high angle conveying system in an open pit mine. It identifies available high angle conveying equipment and examines the haulage and crushing costs associated with both a conventional truck and shovel mining operation and a high angle conveyor operation. These costs analyses were performed on a hypothetical copper, taconite and phosphate mine. Information was gathered from a series of high angle conveying equipment and open pit mining operations in the U.S. Volume I includes a detailed review of the state-of-the-art in high angle conveying concepts, the, hypothetical mine development, and the cost analyses. Volume II includes the appendices.
