The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham) is located in northern Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital, Vientiane. The operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited (PanAust) and is operated by Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (Phu Bia Mining). PanAust holds a 90 % interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 %.The Phu Kham Operation has recently undergone a series of process improvements to treat the anticipated competent ores scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The operation’s comminution circuit, which comprises a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills, each with 13 megawatts (MW) of installed power, was expected to be SAG mill limited when treating competent basement rock. Ausenco Services Pty Ltd (Ausenco), was engaged to help optimise and enhance the productivity of the Phu Kham comminution circuit over an eight-month period. The work involved participating in and overseeing the redesign of the SAG mill liner systems and developing operational strategies for maximising throughput through to the end of mine life. Ausenco’s comminution optimisation tool, Ausgrind, was used to benchmark and analyse plant data with empirical models, predict circuit performance for varying ore characteristics and evaluate liner wear and predict the life for varying operating parameters. Variances between the actual and the predicted values were assessed in detail to identify missed opportunities, and guiding operating parameters were redefined to maximise throughput and productivity. In combination with the redesigned liner system, optimised process controls for varying ore competencies, and improved operational practices and troubleshooting strategies, increased Phu Kham overall production, exceeding the milling capacity when treating competent ores. Serpentinite is an ultra basic and metamorphic rock consisting mainly of magnesium, calcium and silicon oxides. The rock under study is a host rock of chromite mine located in Andorinha, BA. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the rock's physical and chemical characteristics to be used as an additional fertilizer of acid soils. After comminution, rock samples were submitted to chemical analysis, XRD, SEM-EDS and TGA. Afterwards, particle size distribution was determined. Result analysis confirms that our rock consists mainly of dolomite, calcite and diopside. According to the result obtained, it can be said that the serpentinite rock has promising applications in agriculture for the correction and additional fertilization of acid soils. However, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the rock such as its dangers and toxicity as well as evaluate them according to the legislation for corrective acidity.

"Pilot plants for pressure hydrometallurgy represent special design and project execution challenges. Over the past twenty years, Zeton has designed and fabricated a variety of world-class pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities, and this paper discusses design considerations and strategies related to such projects. Project execution methods are also discussed, and guidance is given for the selection of materials of construction and for the selection of appropriate pressure and temperature design points for pressure hydrometallurgical pilot equipment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for process similarity with future commercial operations and the realities of pilot-scale equipment.INTRODUCTIONThe process technology developer or owner and the designer/fabricator of a new pilot-plant facility are faced with some difficult technical choices even after the decision to build a dedicated plant has been taken. A pilot-plant project is usually on the critical path of a large commercial project involving investments many multiples greater than the capital cost of the pilot plant. Schedule savings in the design, manufacture, and commissioning of the pilot plant or in a rapid completion of the experimental program can be disproportionately beneficial to the overall development project. However, inappropriate shortcuts resulting in major oversights can be disproportionately problematic.A number of considerations and suggestions for both the project execution approach and the process engineering design of pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities are presented as a guide for potential owners and operators of new pilot-plant equipment and facilities."

"11.1. IntroductionThe recovery of platinum-group elements (POE) from ores is a subject which has received almost no mention in the literature. Edwards (1975) refers to the process used for refining of the POE, throughout the Western World, as a so-called ""conventional"" process .... ""not because of the simplicity or convenience of the operations, but more probably because of the inertia of established processes and the aura of secrecy with which the major platinum refiners have surrounded this process."" There is no doubt in this writer's mind that the latter is also applicable to the dearth of knowledge of the mineralogy, geochemistry and ore deposits of PGE and that the poor recoveries, mainly attributed to the mineral beneficiation stages of concentration, are also affected by this traditional secrecy. Fortunately, this attitude is changing, due no doubt to the advantages that accrue from more open research which may be critically assessed in the literature in the traditional manner. Examples of this more open approach to recoveries and recovery problems are represented by Newman (1973), who gave some typical recovery percentages for Merensky Reef ores, and the recent encouragement and cooperation on mill samples from the Sudbury area by lnco Metals Company (cf. Cabri, 1981a).In general, platinum-group elements are recovered from an ore by the use of a physical concentration method, such as gravity separation or flotation, followed by further upgrading using further physical, wet chemical or pyrometallurgical techniques. The final process of refining in which the individual platinum-group elements are produced in pure form is outside the scope of this chapter.Platinum-group element deposits naturally fall into different categories according to the recovery process best suited for them, viz. those amenable to gravity separation, those amenable to flotation, and those where platinum-group elements are by-products of base metal sulphide, chromite and miscellaneous other deposits."

Aluminum Production. -By October 1, Aluminum Company of America will restart a 35,000-ton-per-year unit at its aluminum smelter at Rockdale, Tex., restoring that facility to its full capacity of 325,000 tons annually. Primary Ingot Price Increase. -Most U.S. aluminum producers in mid-September were quoting a price of 72 cents per pound for primary aluminum ingot. On September 19, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. announced that it would increase the price of primary aluminum ingot 4 cents to 76 cents per pound.

Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades.Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue Rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill.Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times.This paper explores the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process, and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. The key aspects of process metallurgy that distinguish platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate smelting from that of other base metal sulphide concentrates are presented. These differences include considerably higher input chrome and magnesia contents that directly raise the slag liquidus temperature and have the potential to increase accumulations of refractory spinels. Most importantly, the higher processing temperature required for PGM smelting, and the resulting very high matte superheat lead to considerably more onerous smelting conditions than those typical of other smelting operations. This has presented challenges to furnace design and integrity, especially when coupled with the progressive intensification of smelting, involving doubling, and then redoubling, of furnace power input over the past 20 years. These power increases have been enabled by increasingly more advanced furnace cooling and structural technologies. Key technologies include strong constant-force spring-loaded bindings acting in three dimensions to minimize infiltration of superheated matte into brick joints, and robust well-cooled tapholes for reliably tapping the superheated matte. The result has been substantially improved productivity, and reduced smelting capital cost outlay per unit of production. A significant challenge that was not anticipated, presented itself in the form of insidious corrosion of the furnace lining, and especially high-intensity copper cooling elements. Investigation of corrosion in related industries eventually identified 'chloride-accelerated sulphidation', and this term has been retained as it generically describes the most pertinent aspects of the accelerated low-temperature wear of copper coolers observed in PGM smelting. In addition to discussing the corrosion mechanism, this paper describes a number of solutions that were developed jointly by Anglo American Platinum and Hatch to address the copper corrosion problem. First, new monitoring technologies allowed furnaces to be operated more safely for a longer period of time. Second, a system for replacing corroded coolers from outside the furnace during a fast 'hot' shutdown minimized the impact on furnace operating factor and hearth life. Finally, a corrosion-resistant graphite-protected cooler design significantly improved furnace campaign life, and heralds a more lasting solution to cooler corrosion in PGM furnaces.

Seismic areas were in the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet plain, whose structures were complicated, mainly composed of Maowen fault, Yingxiu fault and Pengxian-guanxian fault. The rapid rise of the Qinghai-Tibet plain led the crustal material of the eastern edge to move to the southeast along the faults on a large scale since the late Cenozoic; Minshan block structure and Long Men Mountain tectonic zone represented the strong nappe thrust movement as the east boundary of Chuanqing slip block; the stress was accumulating when squeezed, which to a certain extent resulted in breakdown of the crust, and earthquakes. The shock speed, high-energy accumulation, and the reversed dextrorotation of the earthquake fault characteristics et al. happened, which caused the development of secondary geological disastersts. According to on-site investigation, the typical geological disasters had thrust rock collapse, the instability deposit, the revival of potential debris flow et al. whose genetic model had been analysed.

This information circular describes research the Bureau of fines has conducted to improve technology for recovering precious metals from low-grade resources. Many of the reported findings are recent, and some of the work described is ongoing. Topics discussed include cyanidation of carbonaceous gold ores to enhance gold recovery, a new method for precipitating mercury during cyanide leaching of gold ores, a staged heap leaching process to generate suitable solutions for direct electrowinning of gold, the use of anion-exchange resins to recover gold from cyanide solutions, and precious metals recovery from electronic scrap.

"Antiscalants were evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in gold processing applications. Under severely supersaturated conditions, 100 percent inhibition was achieved with 30 ppm antiscalant. Laboratory and field testing established that an antiscalant could both inhibit scale buildup and remove an estimated 0.5 kg/m2 per annum of pre-existing scale. A program was developed to control CaCO3 at a gold mill experiencing severe scale buildup. Annual accumulation of as much as 3 cm of scale in process piping was reduced to unmeasureable levels when 10 ppm antiscalant was applied. No scale-related upsets in mill operation occurred during a five-month trial period.INTRODUCTION Inorganic mineral scale is a crystalline deposit that forms when dissolved mineral constituents exceed the solubility of the respective mineral phase. Formation of mineral scale adversely affects a wide range of industries and is of particular interest in mining and metals processing. Scale affects numerous stages of metal extraction processes. Restricted flow in piping, nozzles, valves, screens, pumps and other components used to transport mineral slurries, metal concentrates, and tailings as well as scale in millwater and thickener overflow circuits are primary concerns (Alfano & Boffardi, 1994). Heap leaching, comminuation, flotation, vat leaching, carbon adsorption, and heat exchangers as well as oxidation steps used in processing sulfidic ores are among key unit operations that may be adversely affected (Simmons & Gathje, 2003). Antiscalant chemicals are designed to prevent formation and growth of mineral scales such as CaCO3. These chemicals, which include two primary classes – phosphonates and anionic carboxylate polymers and copolymers - are added to the gold processing stream at low parts-per-million (ppm) concentrations to interfere with nucleation and growth of scale forming crystals and to disperse fine particulate material. Application points may be located throughout the gold extraction process. Evaluation of the performance of antiscalants plays a critical role in determining the best product for a specific application. Performance evaluations include laboratory testing, pilot scale studies, in-plant trials, and ongoing performance monitoring during mill operation."

The use of gas-water dispersion of a molten material flow onto a vibrating surface is developed as a process to minimize water pumping requirements, minimize the risks of explosions, and minimize the post solidification dewatering and fines handling equipment requirements. The process uses existing vibration transport technologies and common plant utilities. Plant trials using the smaller footprint and the progressive molten particle cooling time have yielded encouraging results. The results are analyzed and reported.

Mining vehicle manufacturers are developing lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery electric vehicles as an alternative to diesel-powered vehicles. In gassy underground mines, explosion-proof enclosures are commonly used to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane (CH4)-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Li-ion batteries can create pressurized explosions within sealed enclosures due to thermal runaway. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) measured thermal-runaway pressures of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as a function of free space within sealed enclosures and observed an inverse power relationship. A well-confined cell produced 4260 psia (294 bar) of pressure during a thermal runaway, far exceeding minimum pressure containment specifications for conventional explosion-proof enclosures. Results indicate that adding enough free space surrounding LFP cells can reduce thermal-runaway pressures to levels below that expected for CH4-air ignitions. Measured thermal-runaway temperatures were below the minimum autoignition temperature of CH4-air.

"INTRODUCTION The Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is investigating cushioned blasting at the Explosives Testing Station, Bruceton, Pa. The general interests of this investigation are practical and relate particularly to safety. The immediate concern is an application of cushioned blasting in coal mining.In cushioned blasting, various means are employed to reduce the intensity of the application of energy in an explosive action in a borehole. The primary object is to increase the efficiency of the use of explosives. Cushioned blasting is designed to save the energy usually lost in excessive shattering and in this way to effect economies and to produce increased proportions of desirable lump coal. That this saving should lead to greater efficiency is indicated by an analogy with the theory and experience of size-redaction by crushing or grinding from which it is known that a large proportion of the energy consumed is expended in producing the smaller sizes (26),3/. Aside from these considerations, increasing the yield of lump coal is important in practice because larger sizes of coal usually sell at higher prices. Some statistics published in England in 1934 (63) illustrate the economic origin of the interest in increasing yields of lump coal; these indicate for three sizes of coal that as the size decreases the value decreases in the approximate series 3:1.5:1, thus:"

It is known that Mg can act as a catalyst/solvent in the high pressure high temperature diamond synthesis. However, above pressure levels of the order of 7 GPa, and temperatures from 1700 ? 1800oC, it was not possible yet to use Mg for the industrial production of diamond. A possible alternative is the use of MgNi based alloys. However, owing to the great Mg reactivity, it was consider, so far, a difficult task to deal with such alloys. The present work presents successful results regarding the production of MgNi alloys, with different composition, at high pressure conditions. The behavior of the alloys and their microstructural characterization is analyzed.

An economic and technical evaluation of a proposed process to recover alumina by leaching calcined kaolinitic clay with sulfurous acid is presented in this Bureau of Mines report. After the insoluble portion of the clay has been removed by leaching, monobasic aluminum sulfite is precipitated from the pregnant leach solution by partial hydrothermal decomposition. Further heating completes the decomposition to an impure alumina hydrate. This intermediate is purified in a modified Bayer process, which includes dissolving the alumina hydrate in a caustic solution at high temperature and pressure, then decreasing the temperature and pressure to precipitate alumina trihydrate. Calcining the trihydrate produces the alumina product. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant producing 1,000 tons of alumina per day, 350 d/yr. The estimated operating cost is approximately $475 per ton of alumina. This is substantially higher than a comparable estimated operating cost for the Bayer process of $250 per ton of alumina. The proposed process does not appear economically attractive, even as a method to modify a current Bayer processing plant to use a kaolinitic clay feed. High capital costs and high energy requirements make the process prohibitively expensive.

Coal is essential to America?s future energy needs. To meet these needs mining methods must be safe, economical, and environmentally acceptable. Belt conveyor systems for coal haulage from surface mines offer great potential in this situation. The advantages over conventional truck haulage are particularly promising for area strip mines in western coal fields such as the Powder River Basin where relatively thick, flat-lying coal seams occur. The current demand for low-sulfur coal specifically emphasizes the need for better mining methods in these areas. Underspoil haulage is the term applied to transportation of coal from the pit to the surfate in area strip coal mines by belt conveyors in tunnels under the spoil. The advantages over trucks include lower manpower requirements, greater pit safety and efficiency, and improved reclamation procedure. This evaluation includes a comparison of total mining costs for truck haulage versus six variations of the underspoil haulage concept. The more efficient of these underspoil haulage systems have economic advantages over truck haulage which become more pronounced with deeper overburden, thicker coal, and higher annual production.

The major threat to the sustainability of Aluminium Industry is its significant contribution to global warming by way of generation of non eco-friendly gases during its production cycle from Bauxite to the finished product. Though reduction measures are taken in control and effective recovery of values from pot room gases, efforts in use of environment friendly additives in the final products production line is warranted. In this line, the present paper describes our efforts in the use of a new generation refining flux which apart from helping in effective removal of alkali metals, reduction in inclusions and ensure a better metal cleanliness shall also aide in reduction of obnoxious gases generated during the metal refining process prior to casting. The aim of the current work was to reconcile the practical results with the old generation fluxes used. Further improvements to bring in a better metal cleanliness will also be discussed.

The traditional approach to improving the operating efficiency of a metallurgical plant has been to study individual unit operations and focus on improving the poor-performing unit operations. The complex nature of most metallurgical plants call for a holistic approach that will consider the whole rather than just focus on the individual units of a plant. This holistic approach is part of the systems thinking principles. Numerous case studies highlight the importance of the need to apply systems thinking principles in improving the effectiveness of metallurgical operations. Improving the efficiency of one unit operation without considering its effect on the performance of other unit operations has in many cases lead to lower overall operational efficiency. Modeling and simulation are key to the application of the systems thinking principles. Standard flowsheet models are very useful in scenario analyses though they have to be supplemented with other models for useful predictions.
