The paper summarizes a slide presentation made during the CIM Mechanical-Electrical Operators' Conference, held at Sudbury. Ontario, January 25-27, 1977. Its scope has been limited to a few specific aspects of modern Canadian hoisting plant practice that are likely to be of interest to operating personnel. It is intended to serve as a brief review of established methods discuss in more detail the present state-of-the-art and suggest trends that will appear as products during the next few years.

Four taconite plants were studied to establish the extent of hazard to plant personnel which exists based on long-term exposure to noise. The criteria for evaluation include the 90 dBA and 85 dBA summations of partial exposures. Data from extensive interviews were used to determine all work stations or locations which employees occupied and how much time they spent in ach location in a typical working day. Noise level measurements at every designated location were then made. By means of a computer program, these time and noise level data were us d to find the optimum noise reductions which would be required throughout each plant to meet both noise criteria. Subsequently, each plant was examined in detail so that the apparent sources of noise for each of the locations requiring noise reduction could be delineated. In tabular form, this report presents the hazardous locations for each plant, the existing noise level, the optimum noise reduction which would be required to meet the current and proposed laws, and the sources of noise which produce the existing noise level.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2012 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for 2012: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2012 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities, which were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

Dicho depósito está asociado a la actividad ígnea de centros y domos volcánicos del terciario medio o superior, mientras que la veta Candelaria está constituida por tetrahodrita, enargita, boulangerita, bournouita, jamesonita, esfalerita, galena, bismutinito, chalcopirita y como minerales de ganga, pirita, cuarzo, barita, oropimente, regelgar, marcasita, arsenopirita, así como hay lazos cimoidea. De otro lado, las intersecciones de vetas favorecen la mineralización y el Domo Volcánico Candelaria es favorable a la mineralización al igual que los tufos.

The founder of social psychology is sometimes identified as Kurt Lewin. In a 1947 article, Kurt Lewin coined the term ‘group dynamics’. He described this notion as the way that groups and individuals act and react to changing circumstances. Lewin theorised that when a group is established it becomes a unified system with unique dynamics that cannot be understood by evaluating members individually. The discipline of social psychology really emerged out of World War II and tackled questions associated with human judgement and decision-making by the Nazis. For a comprehensive look at the development of social psychology look at Abelson, Frey and Gregg (2004).Social psychology is concerned with the way social arrangements affect human judgement and decision-making. What the author has done is apply the knowledge of this new discipline to an understanding of risk, safety and leadership. This paper will explain some of the developments in social psychology, such as the discovery of the bystander effect, Groupthink, bounded rationality, heuristics, risk homeostasis and the Milgram effect.The social psychology of risk tackles the way decisions are made about risk in their social context. Unless organisations understand that decision-making is socially conditioned, they are unlikely to be able to tackle the complexities of culture change or the development of risk maturity.The paper will offer a new understanding of why people do what they do, how risk makes sense and why a ‘dumb down’ approach to safety is dangerous. A model will also be presented that shows the pathway to risk maturity.CITATION:Long, R, 2016. ABSTRACT The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment recognizes the importance of environmental protection as an important contributor to Saskatchewan’s economy, with the environmental performance of industry closely monitored. Unfortunately, environmental regulation is often accompanied by significant process that does not always add value to environmental protection activities. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has embarked on a visionary restructuring of its regulatory framework from conventional command and control regulation to a results-based regulatory framework. This new regulatory framework will provide for establishing clear environmental protection and resource management objectives; streamlining the environmental acts and regulations; developing an environmental code of practice; relying on qualified persons; enhancing compliance and enforcement tools; eliminating of many permits; and developing greater certainty in environmental assessment decisions. Results-based regulation promises to deliver enhanced environmental protection with less process. The uranium industry in Saskatchewan will be used as an example of the potential effects of results-based regulation.

Tin mining on Seward Peninsula, Alaska, has been intermittently active since the early 1900's. Most of the recorded production (over 2,200 short tons of metallic tin) has been obtained from placer deposits, but recent production also has resulted from development of lode deposits associated with intrusive rocks occurring in the western part of the peninsula. Generally, the lode deposits containing tin minerals (principally cassiterite) are found in dikes, in granite masses, and in silicate zones in limestone overlying the granite. Both the placer and lode deposits have been of considerable strategic interest to the Government because of the almost total absence of a domestic supply of tin. The most important tin-lode deposit discovered to date is in the Cassiterite dike at the Lost River mine, on Cassiterite Creek about 85 miles northwest of Nome. This highly altered, rhyolite porphyry dike averages 12 feet in thickness, strikes N. 75° to 85° E., and dips steeply to the south; it can be traced on the surface for about 8,000 feet. Throughout its explored length of about 2,200 feet the dike everywhere contains some tin and tungsten in veinlets and disseminations; economic concentration of the are minerals, however, is confined to definite shoots. The ore minerals include cassiterite, stannite, hulsite, paigeite, wolframite, scheelite, and base-metal sulfides; gangue minerals include fluorite, boron silicates, and lithium-bearing minerals. Some ore minerals also occur in the numerous other dikes and in the granite and intruded limestone in and adjacent to the mine.

"The lightness and relatively high strength per unit weight of certain magnesium alloys have interested designing engineers for many years. Ever since the noted investigator Bunsen3/ first produced the element by electrolysis of the fused chloride in 1852, utilization of this light metal has been considered. Magnesium is widely distributed over the earth's surface in high-grade as well as low-grade deposits; it occupies eighth place in the list of elements arranged in order of their decreasing abundance, as there is 2.24 percent magnesium in the earth's lithosphere. Even though the element is distributed widely in the form of relatively insoluble: minerals and also as soluble salts in sea water and spring water, as well as being an indispensable constituent of plants and animals, the technology of magnesium was slow development. This slowness of development was first caused by confusion or the part of the early investigators who thought that magnesia, magnesite, magnetite, and the pyrolusite-type manganese ores were compounds of the same metal. At one time the metal that we now know as manganese was called magnesium, and magnesium was called either magnium or talcium. In addition to this coon, the chemical activity of the metal, especially at high temperatures, created problems that are still difficult to solve.With the advance of science in all branches, .methods for -he production of magnesium were developed. The methods first used for producing the element were: (1) reduction of magnesium salts with alkali metals,4/ (2) electrolysis of aqueous solutions of magnesium salts, and (3) electrolysis of fused magnesiun salts.The first attempts to produce magnesium by the carbothermal reduction of magnesia were failures as sufficient thermodynamic knowledge concerning the reversibility of the reaction between magnesia and carbon was not at hand. As the igneous electrolytic Method for making the element was more easily controlled than the others and. yielded more metal per unit of energy, considerable work was expended on the improvement of this process. The work in this field paralled that on the electroreduction of aluminum and the alkali metals. For several years the entire magnesium industry was dependent on this igneous electrolysis process for its supply of the metal, but as demand for the metal increased and more scientific knowledge was available, other processes were developed. Today magnesium is produced by the electrolysis of molton magnesium chloride electrolytes, the carbothermal reduction of magnesia, in arc furnaces followed by shock cooling of the furnace gases by a coin inert atmosphere, and the silicothermal reduction of calcined dolomite in stainless steel retorts."

Informal gold mining operations in the Amazon emit about 100 tonnes of mercury annually because of poor amalgamation practice. Lack of information and the complexity of mercury transformations hinder effective action to prevent such pollution and/or monitor its extent. In the past, mathematical equations have been formulated to deal with the correlation of natural variables and mercury in biota but often, the error range is too great to provide useful models. Projection of physico-chemical variations in an environment subjected to mercury emissions onto the extent of bioaccumulation is fraught with many uncertainties and unknowns such as internal correlations between variables and the site-specific nature of biota contamination. Often assumptions about closed systems are invalid when applied to natural environments. This work presents a heuristic approach to this problem in which amalgamation methods and natural variables are dealt with using an IF-THEN rule-based system that concludes about levels of emission and risk of bioaccumulation. The system is able to handle uncertain or vague data and yet still provide useful output. Belief in mercury oxidation or dangerous conditions are examined using Fuzzy Logic techniques and Inference Equations. These belief levels are derived from thermodynamic equilibrium data together with field observations of natural variables. This procedure can reduce the need for sophisticated analytical equipment and can provide information and diagnosis to non-technical people.

Abstract A division of part of the Canadian Shield into provinces believed to represent former mountain belts is attempted, special emphasis- being laid upon radioactive age determinations, the relation of Archaean to Proterozoic rocks, and the structure of the Grenville province. Original data on the distribution of radioactivity within several batholiths and their connection with ore deposits are' presented. The possible growth of continents and a theory which explains the shape and distribution of the world's younger mountain and island areas are discussed and applied to the Canadian Shield in an attempt to explain how the growth and present structure came about. The relation of the major mining camps of northeastern Ontario to fault zones is discussed in the light of this theory. Introduction The valuable symposium issued by this Institute to celebrate its jubilees emphasizes the important role of major faults in determining the location of many ore deposits in the Canadian Shield. Many of these faults are known to extend for long distances. It is therefore widely appreciated that it would be of great value if the pattern, ages, and causes of these faults were better understood. This would be particularly useful if the relations of the major fault systems to petrological and metallogenic provinces and to former mountain belts could be established. Each year the volume of available data, and hence the chance of reaching a fuller solution of this problem, increases. This article is a review of the present situation. It is accordingly based almost wholly upon the work and ideas of others, which are gratefully acknowledged. Naturally, responsibility for the selection and marshalling of the data is the writer's.

During the summer of 1946, the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the U.S. Bureau of Mines established several primary magnetic base stations near important iron-producing districts in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Stations were located in groups of four to six in six separate base-station areas, and each position was marked with a concrete monument. Differences in magnetic intensity between stations in these areas, as well as the difference between each area and a magnetic datum at the magnetic observatory of the Coast and Geologic Survey at Cheltenham, Md., were measured with a modified Askania magnetometer. Measurements also were made with a Hotchkiss superdip to study the usefulness of the stations for the calibration of instruments of this type. The work was planned and supervised by F. W. Lee, chief of the Division of Geophysical Exploration, and Edward F. Fitzhugh, Jr., chief of the Minneapolis Division of the Bureau of Mines. Special mention is due Harold B. Ewoldt, Bureau of Mines engineer, for his assistance in the field work, especially in locating and establishing monuments. Special mention also is due Clyde L. Holmberg, of the Bureau of Mines, for the magnetic measurements made with the Hotchkiss superdip. Helpful suggestions were received in the field from H. L. James, of the U. S. Geological Survey. Acknowledgment is made of the cooperation of Stephen Royce, Irving E. Beckwith, Arthur Johnson, and Josiah Royce of Pickands, Mather & Co., and A. E. Matson, of Butler Bros. The U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey furnished daily magnetograms from the Cheltenham Magnetic Observatory as well as calibration equipment and values of absolute magnetic intensity. This paper describing mining methods at, the Eighty-Five mine of the Calumet and Arizona Mining Co., Valedon, N. Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. The Eighty-Five mine is in southwestern New Mexico, 3 miles southwest of Lordsburg, Hidalgo County (see fig. 1). The mine produces normally 7,000 to 8,000 tons per. month of silicious copper-gold-silver ore, and employs approximately 200 men underground and 40 on-the surface. Mining is done by shrinkage and cut-and-fill methods.

FIGURES for the first 11 months of 1935 indicate that the total coal production of the United States for 1935 will be approximately 416,000,000 tons, or almost identical with the production figures for 1934. Bituminous production will show a gain of about six million tons, and anthracite production a loss of about the same tonnage, compared with the previous year. This does not take into account so-called "bootleg" anthracite coal amounting to approximately 5,000,000 tons. Twenty-nine years ago, in 1906, the production of coal was almost identical with this year's production. At that time, 626,000 men were employed in producing this tonnage, which took a toll of 2138 lives from accidents. In 1935, approximately 540,000 men were required to produce the same tonnage with an estimated loss of 1155 lives. This shows definite safety advancement in the industry, but even so accidents are still costing an average of 3c. a ton more than they should.

Research efforts by the U.S. Bureau of Mines include running a series of displacement-discontinuity, boundary-element models to simulate the gateroad design at an underground coal mine in northwestern Colorado. The initial mine design is a yield-abutment chain pillar arrangement in a three-entry, longwall gateroad system. Pressure effects from mining the first and second panel were recorded using borehole pressure cells (BPCs). These field data were then compared directly to the model output. Observed yielding in the field was approximated by reducing material property values and/or removing pillar elements in the model. Model results using this calibration technique mirrored the field measurements consistently. Using the calibrated model parameters, a suite of models was run simulating an experimental entry design: exchanging the yield and abutment pillar locations. These model results reflect a 20¬to 33-percent reduction in core stresses in the yield pillar during mining of the second panel. Improved pillar and entry conditions are suggested by these predictive results. The design modifications were then implemented at the mine along a 150-m (500-ft) test section. Field observations and measurements from the experimental design test site compared favorably with trends of the model predictions.

Sulphuric acid pressure leaching is the process of choice to recover nickel and cobalt from laterites with variable iron and magnesium contents. The latter influences the acidity levels required for effective leaching of nickel and cobalt, and during leaching, iron is rejected in-situ as hematite. Classical solid/liquid separation is performed via a CCD circuit, the performance of which depends upon the size and shape of precipitated particles. In this paper, precipitates obtained by acid-leaching of various lateritic feeds at 270°C are characterized using SEM/EDX and laser particle size analysis. It is shown that as acidity increases, the shape of the precipitates gradually changes from platelets to spheres, thus improving the S/L separation properties of the residue. The use of hydrogen ion concentration “at temperature,” calculated from a speciation analysis, allows the explanation of this change of morphology independently of the type of the ore feed. The possibility of precipitating magnesium sulphate “at temperature” is also discussed. In order to take advantage of this precipitation for scale reduction (as has been proposed in the past) without compromising the residue quality, [H+] “at temperature” must be controlled within an optimum range.

"INTRODUCTION The Edison mine comprises workings on two irregular spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes which outcrop near the town of Keystone in the southern portion of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation of the Edison mine as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the Second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the then small productive capacity of the industry.During the course of the project, the Bureau of Mines completed 13 diamond core-drill holes, aggregating 2,114.5 feet of drilling. Twenty-six cannel samples were taken from the main Edison shaft, and 13 miscellaneous samples were obtained to permit analysis of the efficiency of phases of mining and sorting operations. Metallurgical tests were made by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the feasibility of beneficiating spodumere-bearing ores from the Edison mine. 3/"

High-quality sheet of electrowon molybdenum was attained by a sequence of procedure on pressed and arc-melted crystalline powders. The procedures included high-temperature, high-vacuum sintering treatments and the use of metal deoxidizers instead of carbon to improve the mechanical properties of the molybdenum sheet. Rolled sheet 60 mils thick was evaluated by tensile and bend tests, hardness measurements, microstructures, and recrystallization treatments. After stress relieving, yield strength ranged from 85,000 to 110,500 psi (0.2- percent offset) and ultimate strength ranged from 87,200 to 117,250 psi with 4.5- to 25-percent elongation observed for arc-melted sheet, and 5.0- to 23- percent elongation observed for powder metallurgy sheet. In room temperature bend tests the sheet yielded plastically, indicating that the ductile-brittle transition point was below room temperature. The diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) of the molybdenum sheet changed from 214 to 293 DPH for the stress-relieved condition to 177 to 185 DPH for the fully recrystallized condition. The brittleness of recrystallized molybdenum, reported by other investigators as characteristic of sheet prepared from commercial-grade hydrogen-reduced powders, was not in evidence. Recrystallized tensile specimens pulled at room temperature had an average elongation of 31 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in cooperation with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), conducted over 200 hours of melting tests to vitrify residues from five municipal waste combustion facilities. Combined residues (grate residue and f1yash) from three municipal waste combustors, a waste water treatment sludge combustor, and flyash from a refuse-derived-fuel (RDF) boiler, were sequentially melted in a I-metric-ton (mt) water-cooled-wall electric arc furnace. Each of the residues underwent magnetic separation, screen size analysis, and bulk chemical analysis prior to melting. The furnace products were examined by optical and electron microscopy and by X-ray diffraction. Bulk chemical analyses were acquired for the metal, fume, and vitrified furnace products. The material balance for the furnace operation indicates that from 69 to 86 pct of the feed reported to the vitrified furnace product, which had leaching potentials well below the EPA limit for each metal, as determined by the EPA TCLP. The electric arc melting furnace currently is being utilized in a cooperative research project between the USBM and the Idaho National Engineering 'Laboratory (INEL) for melting tests on simulated low-level radioactive wastes,

A partir de corpos de prova de uma chapa de aço baixa liga NBR 6656 grau LNE 26, realizou-se a caracterização microestrutural, levantamento do perfil de dureza ao longo da espessura da chapa, ensaios de tração monotônicos, cíclicos de fadiga e análises fractográficas. Concluiu-se que, nas extremidades da espessura da amostra, o valor da dureza é maior, indicando que quando a chapa foi laminada as superfícies em contato com os rolos de laminação sofreram encruamento, aumentando a dureza nessa região. A microestrutura encontrada e o grau das inclusões presentes na amostra são compatíveis para o material, bem como as propriedades mecânicas monotônicas, que estão de acordo com a especificação. Por meio de ensaios de fadiga de baixo ciclo, encontrou-se uma boa correlação entre as propriedades monotônicas e cíclicas do material para a proposição da equação de Basquin, considerando-se dados seguros, quando utilizado os primeiros vinte ciclos do ensaio de fadiga para estabilização de cada corpo de prova. Verificando-se a seção transversal da fratura do corpo de prova, observa-se que o mecanismo de falha do material ocorreu a partir do aparecimento de trincas na interface ferrita-cementita com propagação transgranular até a fratura final.
