The first paper in this series1 outlined practical methods for applying the theory of steady-state flow of an ideal Bingham plastic liquid through a circular pipe and axially through a stationary concentric annulus to the enginekring analysis of friction loss problems. In the present paper the properties of another useful rheological model, the pseudoplastic generalized Newtonian liquid, are considered. The terminology applied to the rheological models is derived from the following classification of rheological models. The term "generalized Newtonian" is a class designation applied to models which do not have yield points but which exhibit a dependence on shear rate. The term "pseudoplastic" applies to a sub-group of models within this class which exhibit a decrease in "viscosity" with increasing shear rate. The term "power model" refers to a mathematical model proposed for describing the behavior of the pseudoplastic liquid. This model is of interest since certain of the salt saturated, oil emulsion, and "low solids" drilling fluids, inverted emulsion- and oil-base drilling fluids, aqueous gels, gelled crudes and blocking agents employed in hydraulic fracturing operations are of this type. The present treatment considers the equations describing steady-state Poiseuille flow through a circular pipe and a stationary concentric annul us, and Couette flow between concentric rotating cylinders for a particular pseudoplastic model. As in the previous paper' it is demonstrated how these equations can be applied to engineering calculations of friction losses. Graphical procedures for recovering the various flow curves and cxample calculations are included. A method for simplifying turbulent-flow correlations is also proposed. PROPERTIES OF PSEUDOPLASTIC GENERALIZED NEWTONIAN LIQUID In contrast to the Bingham plastic the generalized Newtonian liquid is yield point-free. However, in the flow region the relation between stress and rate of shear is not linear as it is with ordinary Newtonian fluids. If the stress increases with shear rate at a less than linear rate the system is called pseudoplastic. While there is no yield point in this system, the Bingham advocates' coined the term pseudoplastic to distinguish this kind of behavior from Bingham plastic behavior. For the pseudoplastic a plot of flow rate vs friction loss or rpm vs torque, from pipe flow or rotational viscometer measurements, respectively, generally has three qualities: (1) it can be clearly extrapolated toward the origin; (2) there is very little slope at the origin. This accounts for the high apparent viscosities at low mixing and pumping rates; and (3) the flow curve possesses a continuous curvature which gradually diminishes as the shear increases. Rheological measurements on a pseudoplastic liquid can be easily misinterpreted as indicating Bingham plastic behavior. A typical case in point is illustrated in Fig. 1. These data were obtained from measurements on an oil-emulsion mud using a commercially available rotational-type viscometer (Model 35 Fann V-G meter). Applying the "two-point"* method3 gives a plastic viscosity of 17 cp and a yield point of 24 lb/100 ft2; at the same time weighting material settles very easily in this system. This illustrates that it is not possible to distinguish between the pseudoplastic and the Bingham plastic from only two data points. It is possible to determine qualitatively which model is more appropriate by a combination of dynamic and static measurements. Experience indicates that the simplest criterion for the Bingham plastic liquid is that the calculated dynamic yield point should be of the same magnitude as the measured gel strengths. During the past 6 years the Mining Division of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared many information circulars containing valuable technical data covering the operating details of mining and ore-dressing plants throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. These papers, written for the most part by operating officials in the field, have been designed to comprise a reference library for the operating engineer. In order to make the information contained in these publications more readily available to the busy engineer the enclosed series of reference tables has been compiled. The tabular arrangement is by subject rather than alphabetical order, thus avoiding the bulk of an alphabetical index.

The U.S. economy showed further strength during the third quarter of 1983, continuing the upward trend discussed in the last two issues of Minerals and Materials. The National Association of Purchasing Management composite index increased to a 10-year high of 67. 1 in July. (A value of 50 or greater indicates expanding industrial activity.) The index, a weighted composite of new orders, production, employment, vendor performance, and inventories, is derived from a survey of purchasing agents for about 250 industrial firms. Investment and Other National Economic Indicators The strong consumer surge of second quarter 1983 was reinforced during the third quarter by the performance of private investment. Because of this, many analysts became more optimistic about the strength of the recovery and its potential for being sustained. Capital investment growth, negative since 1980, was positive for every investment component in the third quarter of 1983. Preliminary estimates indicate a real increase of $1.4 billion (at an annual rate) in private investment expenditures on nonresidential structures, an increase of $4.3 billion (at an annual rate) for producers' durable equipment, and an increase of $4.8 billion (at an annual rate) in real inventory levels. The second quarter 1983 increase in expenditures on producers' durable equipment was the first indicator that investment recovery would occur during the rest of the year (table 1). Corporate profits in total manufacturing increased $6.5 billion from first quarter to second quarter 1983 (table 2).

"The consolidation of nano-sized composite materials presents a challenge using conventional hot pressing methods. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology has shown great promise in the successful sintering of nanoreinforced composite materials. This qualitative review seeks to impart knowledge gathered, and progress made over the years on the consolidation of nanocomposite materials using SPS technology. The review is aimed at introducing this technology to the South African science and engineering community. Emphasis is on improving the mechanical properties of structural ceramic nanocomposite materials, which over the years have shown great promise in a wide range of applications, including transport, energy, mining, and the environment. Although success has been achieved within the laboratory for research purposes, there are still great opportunities to commercialize the technology for the production of larger components with more complex shapes.IntroductionSince the pioneering work of Niihara and Nakahira (1991) over a decade ago there have been extensive attempts to harness the potential of nanostructural metals, ceramics, and composites in a number of applications (Niihara and Nakahira, 1991; Selaho et al., 1997; Sekino and Niihara, 1995; Khalil, 2012; Aalund, 2008). It is generally realized that reducing the grain size of materials to nanoscale offers a significant improvement in properties. Attempts to synthesize nanostructured compacts by conventional sintering methods have not succeeded owing to the uncontrollable high rates of grain growth driven by long dwelling times at the sintering temperatures and large powder surface areas (Sergueeva et al., 2009; Gua, Khora, and Chieng, 2004; Tang et al., 2009). Following the development of spark plasma sintering (SPS) technology, it is now possible to process nanocrystalline materials with controlled grain growth. This report presents the results of a study for the Bureau of Mines to compare loan terms for non-fuel mineral projects in developing countries, from various International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and from private sector commercial sources. The study compares IFI and commercial loan terms for seven mineral projects in developing countries. The International Financial Institutions represented are: ? International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) ? International Finance Corporation (IFC) ? Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) ? Asian Development Bank (ADB) ? International Monetary Fund (IMF) In addition, the costs of financing for these mineral projects were compared with the costs of long-term debt to the five largest U.S. mineral producers.

The objective of this work is to provide a detailed review and a list of references in chronological order, comprising 80 recent technical papers, on the use of discrete-event simulation (DES) modeling in mining engineering. In this article, the review papers of published mine simulation projects through 2007 are summarized, and then a comprehensive review of individual articles published from 2008 to 2015 is presented. This survey work also includes analyses of the simulation tools used in the published projects, mining types and applications in order to assess these key features and evaluate the recent state of research in mine DES simulation. In addition, an interactive map visualization for the locations of the simulated projects is made available on a website to benefit current and prospective scholars in the field. The results of this investigation revealed that the most common application of DES in mining had been mining equipment selection and analysis, while ore processing and risk management projects were less frequently reported. The results also showed that modeling surface mines were in the majority, but the trend of publications for underground mine simulations had also increased. According to the results, ARENA was the most popular simulation software package, but several simulation tools that were only used once or twice in the mining projects are also included in this review.

A stronger U.S. economy stimulated the domestic mineral sector in 1994. Metals demand was spurred by robust U.S. motor vehicle sales, while demand for major industrial minerals rose in response to highway and building construction. Domestic mineral and material demand is expected to increase in 1995, particularly if interest rates do not restrain the building industry and international monetary exchange rates remain advantageous to U.S. automobile manufacturers. Additional information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance Processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1994 increased to an estimated value of $360 billion. Domestic output of raw nonfuel minerals in 1994 was estimated at $34 billion, about 6% more than that of 1993. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 29 of the last 34 years.

A new process of recycling valuable metals containing in the slag of jamesonite smelting in the blast furnace was studied. In this process, the valuable metals such as Pb, Sb, Zn and In etc. were fumed and volatilized and enriched in the dust firstly and then the dust was leached by sulfuric acid. In the leaching procedure, Zn and In in the dust entered into the leaching solution and were separated from Pb and Sb which remained in the residue.The optimal operation conditions of the fuming procedure are as follows: the mass ratio of the blast furnace slag, coal powder and lime are 100:22:10 respectively and the fuming time are 1.5~2.5 h, the fuming temperature is not below 1200C and the volatilization rates of Pb, Sb, Zn and In are 95%, 92%, 86% and 75% respectively. The optimal conditions for the leaching procedure are also presented: the consumption of sulfuric acid is 1.15 times of the theoretical consumption, the ratio of liquid to solid is 4:1 and the leaching temperature, leaching -1time and stirring speed are 90, 1.5h and 300 r?min separately. The leaching rates of Zn and In are 98.5% and 95.2% respectively. The experimental results shows that the valuable metals in the dust can be recovered and separated effectively by this process and the?ir recovery efficiencies are as follows: Pb94%,Sb91%, Zn84% and In69%.

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. Cadmium ingot and nickel powder were prepared by high-temperature distillation, solvent extraction and liquid phase reducing method with spent Cd-Ni batteries as raw material. The impacts of the temperature in the distilling stage, the concentration of H2SO4 in the leaching stage, the pH value in the extracting stage and the dosage of hydrazine in the reducing stage were discussed respectively. The as- prepared samples were characterized by the means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The results showed that the recovering efficiencies of Cd and Ni reach 99.5% and 99.3%, and the purities of Cd ingot and nickel powder were higher than 99.90% and 99.80%, respectively.

As natural gas is a waning resource in many places, increased interest has attached to the use of gas for the manufacture of carbon black. Because of a large number of requests for information on the subject, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of the carbon-black industry, covering the mechanical details of commercial methods, with the purpose of increasing the recovery of carbon black by such processes. A study has been undertaken of the economic factors governing the carbon-black industry, the uses and properties of carbon black, the dE)velopment of more Itccurate methods of testing carbon black, microscopic examination of different grades of black, physicochemical study of methods' of mQ.nufacture now in use, and research on new methods of manufacture. Part I of this paper covers the engineering and economic side of the industry; the other phases of the investigation which have been under the direction of G. St. J. Perrott, of the Pittsburgh station.of the United States Bureau of Mines, are discussed in Part II.

A study of the accident statistics in the coal mining industry convinces one that an organized effort must be put forth to prevent the vast destruction of human life in this industry . The fatality rate in Pennsylvania has not improved in the past several years and during 1928 it was higher than the average for the period 1916 to 1927 , inclusive . Although the accident rate for this State is less than that of the coal mines of the United States as a whole , nevertheless the rate is unduly high ; however , there are many companies which have exceptionally good records as regards both fatal and nonfatal accidents . A study of the methods used by some of these relatively good- record companies to reduce accidents in their mines shows that they exert an organized effort to prevent accidents , and that their safety organizations usually affect every employee in and about the mine from the highest official to the check boy . The chief executive must be actively and personally interested in accident prevention if real safety results are to be obtained ; when he shows this interest it is almost invariably reflected in the officials under him and throughout the organization . Safety organizations vary in form and are readily changed or adapted to the varying conditions found in the bituminous field . The companies whose organizations were studied in preparing this report are all getting good results , and it is their opinion that the safety organizations have been a big factor in obtaining these results . At their request the identity of some of the companies whose organizations were studied has not been divulged in this paper , but this does not affect the value of the information concerning their safety organizations .

Lead was mined and smelted near Falling Creek, Va., to supply the local demand for bullets and shot. This was the first mining and smelting of lead in what is now the United States. 1632. Phosphate deposits are distributed widely over the earth's surface. Of the known areas of deposit, eight fields are of particular interest because of their vast reserves of high grade phosphatic material and the volume of their production that goes to the world's great consuming areas. These fields, in the order of their present economic importance, are situated respectively in Florida, French Morocco, Kola Peninsula of U.S.S.R., Tunisia and Algeria, Tennessee, Montana-Idaho-Wyoming-Utah, Ocean and Naru Islands in the Gilbert group, and in Egypt. The Rocky Mountain deposits have a comparatively low ranking in the phosphate trade of today, but this field contains one of the largest known reserves of phosphatic material, associated with which are recoverable trace minerals, which are of increasing importance in our national economy. The first discoveries of phosphate rock in the western states were recorded in Cache1 and Rich2 counties in Utah, respectively in 1889 and 1897. Mining operations were begun on these deposits near Montpelier, Idaho, in 1906. During the latter year geological studies of the phosphate beds were started by Weeks and Ferrier of the U. S. Geological Survey. These studies have been continued to the present day by a distinguished roster of the Survey's technicians. As a result of this systematic exploratory program, the Survey has published a series of bulletins, papers, and maps, which provide the mining public with a comprehensive study of the exposed

Since the ancient times, clays were used as decolorant material for various types of oils. These clays were called ?decolorant clay?. They have the property to decolor dye materials present in mineral oils, plants and animals. Biofuel is a fuel derived from biomass of live organisms. As biodiesel is produced from renewable sources, the generation of employment due to industrial scale production may cause a reduction in the dependence on foreign diesel importing, as well as the reduction of air pollution by the addition of biodiesel to diesel. This study aimed to develop a technological process to decolor post- consumption oil to be applied as biofuel. The results were characterized by techniques of XRD (X-ray diffraction), X-ray fluorescence and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared). It was observed that the post-consumption oils presented a higher decoloration result after treatment with the Brazilian clay.

The computer program, HYBMODE, has been developed to meet the need for a fast and economical method for clustering data points on the sphere. The algorithm used in this development is an extension of D. Wishart's one-level mode analysis. The program can be used to cluster either vectorial or axial data; it is currently being used by the Bureau of Mines to cluster fracture orientations.

The development of new stoping methods and more effective control over dilution, recovery and fragmentation depends on improved accuracy in blasthole drilling. The mechanisms and factors which control accuracy are poorly understood. Canadian blasthole stoping and the practices adopted for monitoring and controlling drilling accuracy are reviewed. The techniques and problems associated with blashole set-up and trajectory surveying are discussed. Four new blasthole trajectory survey systems are evaluated on the basis of their performance in recent underground trials. Conclusions are drawn as to the technological developments required so that more precise control over drilling accuracy can be achieved.

Kinetic study of hydrochloric acid leaching of Panzhihua ilmenite from China is presented. Both temperature and concentration of hydrochloric acid have significant effects on the rate process of Fe dissolution from ilmenite ore, while the ratio of liquid to solid has little effect on the Fe dissolution. The Fe dissolution is found to follow the spherical model f (??) =1-(1- ??)1/3 and the apparent activation energy is calculated as 47.21 KJ/mol, suggesting a chemical reaction controlled mechanism. The dissolving behaviors vary at different kinetic stages. At the beginning the amount of the dissolved Fe and Ti increased monotonically with leaching time, while about 15 minutes later the dissolved Ti in the form of TiOCl2 began hydrolyzed into TiO2 fines reunited on the ilmenite ore surface, as observed by SEM and EDS technique. For the unreacted ilmenite particles covered by a layer of hydrolyzed TiO2, the leaching seemed to be as a selective leaching of iron and because Ti dissolved from and hydrolyzed rapidly again into the unreacted ilmenite particles. The leaching process can be ended 4 hour later when almost of Fe has dissolved into the solution and TiO2 remains as solid residues. The effects of acid concentration and leaching temperature were also investigated.
