A National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-funded project (NASA Grant #NAG13-02026) is underway to determine the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map mineralogy that affects water quality within a watershed and to identify the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic sources to that drainage. Natural sources, particularly areas of pyritic hydrothermal alteration, have been found by the Colorado Geological Survey to be a significant source, sometimes the only source, for acidity and/or metals in a number of areas of Colorado (Neubert, 2000). This situation undoubtedly occurs in many places in the Western United States and elsewhere where metallic mineralization occurs. Anthropogenic sources arise from mining and other human activities that increase the exposure of acid-generating materials to weathering processes, thereby increasing acidity and metal loading to drainages where that activity is occurring or has occurred. This project is attempting to determine if these sources can be differentiated through mineralogical analysis, in conjunction with surface water chemistry that controls the precipitated minerals, of the impacted drainages by remote sensing techniques.

In this paper, the results of a fundamental study involving zeta potential and turbidity determinations of solid suspensions are discussed. Illustrations of how these results are utilized to design field applications of solid grade polymers to clarify mine drainage water are presented. Other applications in different industries are also reported. The operational and economical advantages are examined.

From 1968 to 1975, most work in surface modification of inorganic materials involved silane coupling agents. A silane coupling agent can be described simply as an oganosilicon chemical having a general formula RSi-X3 wherein the R group is attached to a silicon in a thermally and hydrolytically stable manner, and X is a hydrolyzable group usually having an alkoxy functionality. About 1975, Kenrich Petrochemicals brought into the market place titanate coupling agents. Titanate coupling agents usually consist of one alkoxy group and three functional groups attached to a central titanium atom. Zircoaluminates became available in about 1982. Zircoaluminate organometallic coupling agents, which vary principally in their respective organofunctionalities, arise from a basic technology in which two different types of organic ligands are selectively bound to a low-molecular weight zircoaluminate backbone.

The Bureau of Mines' rapid method of dewatering fine-particulate slurries uses extremely high molecular weight polymers. These polymers form large, strong flocs which can be dewatered by sieving or sedimentation. However, sometimes these flocs deteriorate rapidly if water is not removed immediately. During field tests, clay slurries have been encountered that could have been dewatered economically if it were not for the rapid floc deterioration. A kinetics study was conducted to determine the rate of kaolin-PED floc degradation in which polymer addition, to bring the flocs back to their original condition, was used to determine the extent of floc decay. Results showed that the amount of polymer added, to replace polymer lost by spreading, was less for the lower PEO concentrations. For this clay-polymer system, floc breakage as judged by polymer additions followed first order kinetics. It was also found that the addition of fluoride ion stabilized the kaolin flocs.

A computerized on-line process control system designed to monitor and control the seven-cone copper precipitation operations at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division in New Mexico has been continuously operating since April, 1972. The cone monitoring system consists of plant sampling components, process measurement instrumentation, on-stream X-ray spectrometer, control computer, typewriters for programming and for operating reports, foreman's communication console, and cone automation hardware. The system provides the following functions: (1) assays for copper and iron from ten process streams on a continuous rotating basis, (2) directs hardware to automatically flush and start up cone units based on measured performance variables, (3) provides continuous plant operating data and calculates metallurgical averages as well as production figures for shift and daily summaries, and (4) provides data logging capabilities. The system is very reliable and improves plant performance by increasing yields, reducing scrap iron consumption, and reducing operating manpower requirements.

The advantage of using a clean coal as a feedstock in a direct liquefaction plant is improved performance of the plant by several factors e.g., increased throughput of coal; reduced wear and tear of valves, pipes, and pumps; increased liquid yields, etc. This paper examines the technical feasibility for cleaning Illinois #6 coal as a feedstock to a direct coal liquefaction plant via selective agglomeration using a coal-derived heavy distillate, Wilsonville V-1074 as agglomerant. Effects of addition of Kerosene or coal-derived Naphtha as conditioner, coal particle size, slurry pH, oil to coal ratio, and operating temperature on ash reduction and clean coal weight recovery have been studied. Results show that about 70% of the ash can be removed from this coal and the clean coal weight recovery over 85% can be achieved by using this technique with suitable selection of coal particle size, slurry pH, mixing intensity and oil to coal ratio.

Roasting of refractory gold ores has the primary goal of oxidizing sulfides and organics to improve gold recoveries prior to leaching. Commercial installations currently utilize bubbling and circulating fluidized beds. The principle of flash roasting is aimed at a more cost effective method of whole ore roasting for large throughput applications. Results of pilot plant testing and scale up to commercial design will be discussed in further detail in this paper.

Homestake crushing and grinding, practice-was completely revised during the period of 1951-1953. During the conversion, both crushing plants at the head frames the Ross and the Yates, were changes at each plant involved replacing the two 8K gyratories with a rebuilt, The flow sheet single thirty inch gyratory for primary crushing to four inch. The gyratory discharges to a seven foot Symons standard cone crusher set at 1-1/8 inch opening. The cone discharge goes to Tyrock screens fed by vibrating feeders. Screen openings, are l/2 inch by 5 inches: at the Ross. Plant, and 3/8 inch by 5; inches at the Yates. Screen oversize goes to a seven foot Symons cone brusher converted to the short head type; the crusher setting is 5/16 inch. Crusher, discharge; is closed circuited with the Tyrock screens, The above crushing installation delivers a minus 5/8 inch rod mill feed to the mill bins. The crushing revision eliminated the-180 heavy South African type stamps, which had previously reduced the 2 inch crushing plant product to a minus 5/8 inch feed for the 10 rod mills, and 8 ball and pebble.; mills, other revisions in the mill flow sheet, resulted in 3 identical units of about 1350 tons per day, capacity per unit, Each unit consists of an open, circuit 6 foot by 12 foot rod mill, fed from two 24 in by 48 inch vibrating feeders of the four feeders available per unit. A gathering belt delivers the ore discharge of the feeders to the Transportoweigher, which in turn discharge s, into the rod; mill feed spout. Rod Mill discharge is the feed for the 9 foot by 11 foot ball mill, The ball mill is closed circuited with a 16 foot by 30 foot Dorr Classifier. The Homestake make amalgamator, for coarse gold recovery in the ball mill circuit, made' necessary a 36 inch spiral conveyor between the classifier rake discharge and, the combination drum and double scoop feeder on the ball mill See Figure l - the flow sheet of the two stage grinding units.

The Broken Hill proprietary company Limited grate kiln pellet plant (1) located at Whyalla in South Australia commenced production on May 13, 1968. During commissioning, about 25,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced. Plant performance was satisfactory and acceptable under the plant guarantee. For production reasons, it was necessary to curtail the fluxed pellet run and revert to the production of acid pellets. In 1970, some 250,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced under varying operating conditions to determine the requirements for optimum quality pellets at acceptable production rates. In excess of 180,000 long tons of these fluxed pellets were exported to Japan. Problems experienced in production of the fluxed pellets are detailed, and the quality of the fluxed pellets compared to that of normal acid pellets produced at Whyalla. Brief Plant Details Run of mine ore treated was predominantly soft and friable and contained an average of 66 per cent Fe, 1.7 per cent Si02 and 1.8 per cent Al203. The main iron mineral in the ore was hematite with some martite also present. Plant feed was ground dry in ball mills 11 ft in diameter by 29 ft long to a Blaine surface area of 1600 sq.cm/g and the ground ore was wetted in a pug mill. Balling was carried out in balling drums 10 ft in diameter by 32 ft long. Induration equipment included an eighteen windbox grate 12 ft 2 in. wide by 164 ft 1 in. long, a rotary kiln 18 ft 6 in. diameter by 118 ft 8 in. long and an annular cooler 50 ft mean diameter by 7 it wide.

Central Water Integration Project (CWIP) Segment 5-1 is the most critical segment of a regional water supply project that transfers groundwater from Burleson County to northern San Antonio, replacing over 20% of that City’s water supply with a new source. CWIP Segment 5-1 included three tunnel reaches totaling 10,350-ft and 5 shafts that were constructed inside the City in an area known to contain large karst features. This paper describes site work used to investigate the alignment for karst features, manage potential environmental impacts, develop the contract package required for mitigation and the means and methods used to mitigate the large karst features that were encountered.

"Clays are known to contribute to a wide range of mineral processing challenges. These challenges can haunt a plant from the pit, through the beneficiation plant and even to the tailings pond and process water. Each step that the clay is present potentially experiences significant and costly impacts to the process efficiencies. The effect of clay minerals on the performance of phosphate flotation was investigated. The investigation led to an understanding of the movement of clay through the beneficiation plant, the impact on reagent usage, and the overall flotation performance. INTRODUCTION With the decline in mineral feed grades, mineral processing will continue to face challenges. One significant challenge would be obtaining high recoveries of industry specified quality mineral concentrates with lower quality raw minerals. Other challenges may be the handling of the excess tails and process water being produced to maintain a mill’s production volumes. For example, increased levels of clay have been, and will continue to be, a topic of concern for many mines. Some of these concerns include environmental regulations associated with water storage and discharge, as well as beneficiation. Gonglun Chen reported that clays produced in the phosphate industry are generally colloidal and fine (90% < 45 µm) (Chen, 2006). As such, these clays can take 20-30 years to settle, in the absence of polymeric assistance. The settling of these clays is essential as an accidental discharge can lead to substantial impacts to the wildlife and ecosystem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has referenced cases where the discharge of water can result in fines in the tens of millions of dollars, and at times causing the processing plants shut down, depending on the volume and quality of this discharged water (EPA, 1997). The turbidity discharge criteria will vary from state to state. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has listed a turbidity maximum of 29 NTUs, or 60 mg/L total suspended solids, above the natural background condition (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2016). A lot of the literature has been focused on the impact of high levels of clay (>10%) on mineral processing. Farrokhpay has reported the significant impact of clay minerals on froth stability in copper flotation (Farrokhpay, 2012). He reported that clays can form a hydrophobic slime coating on the surface of bubbles, which can yield an increase in froth stability. Clay concentrations as low as 5% can have significant impacts on the rheological properties or slurry viscosities. Increased slurry viscosities can lead to either elevated pumping/processing energies being required, decrease in flotation efficiencies due to a decrease in bubble mobility through the pulp, or decreased throughput to manage these viscosities (Tu, 2005; Farrokhpay, 2013; Burdukova, 2014)."

The Great Belt Link is a $3.5 billion fixed link across an 18 km (12 mile) wide body of water that separates the island of Zealand, on which Copenhagen is situated, and the main land mass of Denmark, Jutland, which is part of the European continent. The project consists of three main contracts. The first contract is an 8 km (5 mile) long, two-bore railway tunnel for the eastern half, the second contract is a 6.6 km (4 mile) combination railroad and highway bridge for the western half, and the third contract is a 6.7 km (4 mile) long high-level highway bridge for the eastern half. This paper will discuss the Eastern Railway Tunnel Project and the methods of construction that the joint venture consortium plans to use, along with its equipment selection. The ground conditions to be encountered begin with glacial tills, which are a mixture of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles, and granitic boulders. The boulders can be up to 1-3 m (3-10 ft) in diameter. Underlying the till is a marl which is sometimes highly fractured with hydrostatic pressures of up to 8 bar. About 40% of the tunnel is in till and 40% in marl, with the remaining 20% being a mixed face of the two formations.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. The basic theme of this symposium and panel Is Rotation Pads: Are They Optimized? There Is a. reason for phrasing the title In the form of a question. There Is not only the technical competency which we must address; there Is the operating philosophy that must be evaluated on the part of both the customer and the supplier. Customers desire reagents which are trouble-free and capable of providing that extra amount of selectivity or recovery. When they receive ft, after the supplier has provided several years of Internal research, one of the first concerns/complaints Is the price of the product. This has a tendency to rapidly reduce a supplier&apos;s support level In the future. Suppliers are equally guilty from another perspective. When they approach a customer to Introduce a product, they often attempt to market by offering only a price Incentive. They then wonder why a customer doesn&apos;t respond Immediately to the incentive. They are often oblivious to the fact that the reagent cost is such a minor aspect of the operating budget, and the customer has many more pressing problems on a day-to-day basis In comparison to the reagent cost. We need to establish the understanding that reagent cost Is an Inconsequential cost of operation, and yet has such a disproportionately high Impact on the success of the entire operation. This understanding Is required by both the customer and the supplier. We say to each other,&apos; why are we discussing this since this has been obvious for some time?&apos; The reason is relatively simple in that we talk about it, acknowledge it, and yet we do not adhere to it. The supplier provides a product along with test data containing statistics, analysis, recovery, grade and cost calculations while most of the time ignoring the operating technique which must be applicable In the plant In order to optimize the product. He expects the reagent to be substituted In the plant for the existing reagent and ft works or does not work after trying several variables. The operating management Is equally guilty, In order to best explain this to both the customer and the supplier, ft becomes necessary to review the basic purpose of the major reagents utilized In flotation. A collector is basically to Impact selective, maximum water repellency on the surface of a particular mineral, The frother has the purpose of providing a chemically stabilized membrane on the surface of the bubble at the air-water interphase. This, then, provides a host environment for the attachment of the collector-coated mineral to a bubble. The depressant functions In the reverse of the collector and must demonstrate the same or greater degree of selectivity than expected of a collector. The key area which has been Ignored Is the rate by which these reactions occur and Interrelate. This has a very specific effect on the operating technique and the compatibility of the chemistry, equipment, and the operator himself. Researchers, suppliers, and customers provide reams of data to demonstrate how their products or design produce, for example, higher kinetics, more selectivity, or more recovery. The Information is often true. After all, we are all learned men and laboratory and actual plant data do not lie. However, we must remember the theme of this symposium and panel: Flotation Plants: Are They Optimized? and Optimizing of Flotation Reagents? The direct, honest comment to the two titles is very simple. OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT The plants, equipment, and reagents had better not be optimized or else we are in trouble. The Issue of this panel discussion is to approach this subject from a slightly different or perhaps mainly Ignored aspects of optimizing reagents in flotation. When we have reagents which provide higher kinetics, more selectivity, and better recovery, how do we use them? Since each reagent has a different physical characteristics of froth, rate of recovery, volume effect on the compatibility of equipment, and many more aspects too numerous to mention, the question which has been severely Ignored Is, &apos;What degree of study and cooperation by both the supplier and the operating management has been conducted In order to prepare the operator for maximizing the performance of a reagent In relation to the rest of the system?" Prior to testing a new reagent, how much time Is spent to bring the actual operator(s) Into the program to make them feel part of the program? How much time is spent explaining to the operator on the float floor how to possibly take advantage of a reagent with faster kinetics or one which Is Inherently more selective? What

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires burning in 9 states. This is considered by experts to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled can burn for years and in fact, one of the most well-known mine fires in the US, the mine fire in Centralia, PA, which began in 1962 has been burning for over 55 years. In Centralia, the mine fire won the battle, despite suppression and control efforts, as most of the residents were bought out by the State of Pennsylvania and moved away. However, the world record for the longest-burning coal fire, which may have been started around 6,000 years ago in New South Wales, Australia is still smoldering. Suppressing a coal mine fire requires cooling the hot zones and removing any source of oxygen. If the workings are shallow, the fire zones can be unearthed and the burning rock mass can be quenched on the surface. If the workings are too deep to excavate, then the fire must be fought remotely through boreholes using a variety of agents including water, gas-enhanced foam and grout. Access to surface areas for drilling can be problematic due to topographic and property constraints. When this occurs, large areas of burning may go unaddressed or simply left to burn. Fire Solutions, Inc. has been investigating the use of gas-enhanced foam in concert with directional drilling technology. Gas-enhanced foam has the advantage of using less water and adds inert nitrogen gas to displace oxygen to infiltrate and suppress a fire. Directional drilling has the capability to steer a borehole to a specific place underground. Directional drilling has many advantages over conventional drilling technology as it can provide the least disruption to the ground surface, minimize surface preparation and reclamation costs, multiple sites can be accessed underground from a single site and thus treated simultaneously and it offers increased efficiency because it is not constrained by difficult terrain. This paper discusses the combined use of these two technologies and it is hoped that with the use of these two technologies the efficiency and capability to address mine fires will be significantly improved. INTRODUCTION According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in 9 states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging damage overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards [1]."

The La Perla Mine, owned by Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A., is located approximately 100 miles east of the City of Chihuahua in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. The mine began operations in 1958. Existing ore beneficiating facilities, consisting of heavy media and jig plants, upgrade the ore prior to shipment by rail to the Altos Hornos steelmaking complex in Monclova. Sizable reserves of two distinct ore types, which were not amenable to treatment in the existing beneficiating plant, or usable in the blast furnaces, have been mined and stockpiled in order to uncover the treatable ores. One of these ore types has been labeled "Diseminado" ore, and is low grade containing approximately 42% Fe with sulphurs ranging from 1 to 2%. The other ore type has been labeled "Pulverulento" ore, and is high grade containing approximately 65% Fe and 0.1% S, but at 80% minus 325 mesh, is too fine grained for efficient sintering. Late in 1968, Arthur G. McKee & Company became involved with the problem of improving the above ores for their efficient and economical use in Altos Hornos&apos; blast furnaces. Early in 1969 representative samples of Diseminado ore were obtained for laboratory bench-scale testing at the University of Minnesota, Mineral Resources Research Center. Concentration tests incorporating magnetic roasting, wet magnetic separation, high intensity separation, high tension magnetic separation, anionic flotation of apatite, cationic flotation of silica and oleic acid flotation of iron were performed. Laboratory testing was concurrently carried on at La Perla Laboratory, which resulted in plans to construct a 10 TPD pilot plant. The pilot plant was operational in September, 1969. Analyzing laboratory results as well as pilot plant results, Altos Hornos and Arthur G. McKee & Company metallurgists agreed that the most promising flowsheet for the low grade Diseminado ores entailed wet magnetic cobbing, desliming, and oleic acid flotation of the non-magnetic fraction. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

With the growing demand for energy, explora¬tion for uranium deposits has dramatically increased in the past few years. Since the early ages of uranium exploration, natural gamma ray logs has proved fast and convenient in locating and evaluating mineralized bodies. However, natural gamma ray logging is an indirect measure of the uranium content and in some circonstances, the radiometric signal can be &apos;altered in a very significant way. To check the presence of any distortion, statistical comparision of radiometric counts and chemical assay values for the same samples is generally performed. Of course in such studies, one inevitably mixes samples where the radiometric signal is really proportional to the uranium content and samples where this signal is influenced by many other sources or distorted before being recorded. Nevertheless, the average tendency leads to correction factors which are then applied to every radiometric reading in the deposit or portion of the deposit where the statistical comparison is made. To account for the "average" character of these correction factors, a parameter of uncertainty like a standard deviation of possible errors is associated to each corrected value. This parameter can be latter used in an ore reserve estimation when the weights assigned to samples should depend on the precision of their grade. The purpose of this paper is to present a new regression technique which can be used without any restrictive hypothesis like a normal or lognormal distribution. Different standard ways which can be used to statistically compare radiometric and chemical assay values for the same sample and to derive a correction factor for the latter will first be reviewed, after a general discussion of disequilibrium problems. The discussion and the examples will be restricted to the case of natural gamma ray logging in drill holes but the methods presented in this paper can also be applied to data from the radiometric probing of a working face or a truck load in an operating mine.

[One of the major problems in the purchase and sale of coal shipped in lake or ocean going vessels has always been the difficulty in obtaining a true analysis of the shipped coal?s quality because of faulty sampling by manual methods. As long as coal was sampled according to standards set up by ASTM methods designated D 492-48 there generally were no quarrels with the results obtained. However, due to varied weather conditions and because of the large number of cars sampled, there is no assurance that prescribed manual methods of sampling will always be followed. Because of this problem, the organization previously called American Coal Sales Association, now part of the National Coal Association, set up a committee compose of representatives from coal producers, coal shippers and coal consumers to study this sampling problem and to devise, if possible, a means of sampling on the high lift dumpers which could be automated so that a; true sample of the coal as loaded in the railroad car could be obtained.]
