The material composition of product is defined as the quantity of metal used per unit of product manufactured during a year. This ratio measures the efficiency of converting a ray material into final products. The material composition of product has shown steady and persistent declines over time for most metals and materials. This tendency demonstrates the continued improvements in manufacturing technology, resulting from substitutions of other materials and improvements in production efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to study trends in the material composition of product to reveal the impact of advanced materials on the use of traditional metals.

Significant quantities of nuclear wastes were first generated in 1944 as a byproduct of the national defense program. To establish the current inventories and future projections of nuclear waste products is not a simple task. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory recently issued a report which now constitutes the official basis for nuclear waste inventories and projections. Radioactive wastes originate from five major sources (U .S. Department of Energy, 1980b) : (1) From the commercial nuclear fuel cycle related to the production of electricity , (2) From defense related activities, (3) From institutions such as hospitals, universities, and research foundations, (4) From industrial uses of radioisotopes, and (5) From mining and milling of uranium ores.

The effect of various flotation depressants and surface treatments on the floatability of coal derived pyrites in the presence of XIBC was investigated with a modified Hallimond tube microflotation cell. The floatability of pyrite particles which had been cleaned with hot dilute (5%) hydrochloric acid was relatively large. However, the floatability of such particles was reduced greatly by the addition of specific depressants such as calcium hydroxide and also by treating the pyrite with an aerated warm alkaline solution. Although this treatment and these depressants also had some effect on the floatability of coal particles, the effect was much less than on the pyrite particles.

In 1980, a caravan of representatives of Japanese trading companies debarked on the shores of the United States bearing gifts of watches, electronic games, and radios. In early 1983, we find in a parking lot of a major U.S. coal company, a haggard general manager of marketing returning to the Orient with a box under his arm of trinkets of his own; cross pens with company logos, alarm clocks, etc. The tables have turned, but our fellow sitting in a jet plane over the Pacific Ocean had only to heed the warning of the famous 19th Century poet well familiar with the ways of the Far East. Kipling said; "And the End of the Fight is a tombstone white and with the name of the late deceased, And the epitaph drear, a fool lies here who tried to hustle the East."

Increasing interest in the Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) technology calls for a universally understandable definition of suitable performance factors which would reflect the unique features of this technology. The importance of properly designed and calculated performance factors for the BWE systems cannot be overemphasised. They are used by all levels of management in any mining organization for a wide variety of purposes, in particular for budgeting, for selecting new equipment, for monitoring current equipment and for comparison with other operations.

Gold was first discovered in Alabama in 1830. Before a decade had passed more than 20,000 people were employed in the various gold districts scattered across east-central Alabama. By 1849 most of the presently defined gold districts were known with such towns as Arbacoochee, Chulafinnee, Goldville, Pinetucky, and Idaho being the principal mining camps. The California gold rush of 1849 signaled the end of intensive prospecting in the Alabama Piedmont for the precious metal. Reactivation of many of the old gold districts has been attempted several times since 1849. Significant activity and development took place between 1874 and 1880, 1888 and 1916, and 1929 and 1936. Locally, some of the development met with moderate succes. The last productive gold mine in Alabama ceased production in 1935. The sharp increase in gold prices since 1973 has caused renewed interest in the potential values of gold of the Alabama gold districts. Most of the gold workings have been abandoned for nearly 75 years and are for the most part inaccessible for convential property evaluation. The early gold miners and prospectors in Alabama were more intent upon finding and mining the valuable metal than in recording their activities for future generations. No matter how interesting or historically significant these records might have been the miners kept no records and left behind them few maps as clues to their activities. Inasmuch as most of the old gold districts have been extensively mined and prospected during the past 150 years, there is very little chance of finding large deposits through conventional outcrop prospecting methods. Similarly, the present geologic knowledge of the various districts is insufficient to launch successful exploration programs looking for large blind lode deposits in new locations within the general gold bearing region.

Low Froude Number (Fr) theory* predicts that stably-stratified fl& around a terrain obstacle will divide into a lower layer passing essentially horizontally around the obstacle and an upper layer passing essentially over the obstacle. The prediction was formulated by Sheppard (1956) and Drazin (1961) and confirmed experimentally in the towing tank model d experiments of Hunt et a1 (1978) and the atmospheric full scale experiments of the US EPA Complex Terrain Model Development Program (1982- 1985). The US EPA Complex Terrain Dispersion Model, currently under development, employs the layering principle with the flow in each layer calculated independently by potential flow (PF) theory after the layer thicknesses are established according to a simple function of Fr, i.e., Hc /H = 1 - Fr where Hc is the dividing streamline freight and E is the obstacle height. Use of PF theory in the CTDM is attractive because numerical solutions can be obtained simply and economically, as compared to lengthy Navier-Stokes (N-S) solutions, but realism is sacrificed in creating a surface of discontinuity between the tm layers and eliminating the effects of shear and gravity in each layer.

In mid-1972 we determined that a fresh approach to coal mining research was needed for the industry as well as for Bethlehem. The reasons to us were obvious: Productivity was in the throes of a steady decline, and labor and maintenance costs were spiraling upward. Yet, despite this predicament, nowhere in the U.S. at that time was there a comprehensive and coordinated research and development plan in the offing. The Bureau of Mines had not yet been charged with such a responsibility, and industry was content to rely on machinery manufacturers for innovations. After studying our own mining practices, the state-of-the-art of mining research elsewhere, and development work by manufacturers, we presented a comprehensive research package to our management at the end of 1972. The ideas and experience of many operating and management personnel in our Corporation contributed to the formulation of the final plan as approved.

Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal for more than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trona, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Over the past 12 years, Exxon Coal U.S.A., Inc. has shipped over 150 million tons of coal from two mines, Rawhide and Caballo, located in the Gillette, Wyoming, area. These mines are operated by The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal. Shipments have moved to more than 25 electric utility plants in the west, midwest, southwest, and south. The customer plants have represented a wide variety of configurations, sizes. design criteria, emission standards, and operations in different parts of the country. We have learned a great deal about the performance of Gillette area coals in utility power plants during this period. This paper covers some of the highlights of Exxon's experience with these coals in customer plants. I will focus specifically on things mining engineers may be able to do to make the product better for the customer's use.

According to the American Coal Ash Association, 105 million tons of coal combustion products (CCP) were produced by the power generating utilities in 1997. Of that total, 1.68 million tons were used in mining applications (ACAA, 1997). Results have ranged from the environmentally beneficial to neutral and, in some cases, detrimental. Twenty years ago coal ashes: bottom and fly ashes constituted nearly all CCPs. With the shift to new emission control technologies at power plants, however, large volumes of new products are being generated. Many do not lend themselves to traditional ash applications such as cement formulation. Many CCP disposal sites are not documented with reliable pre and post application monitoring. In this report we discuss types of CCP, their relevant characteristics and the mining environment. We have attempted to identify a range of documented applications and to draw conclusions about their environmental effects including benefits and adverse impacts.

INTRODUCTION The flotation of minerals from their ores in flotation cells involves understanding many chemical and physical processes ranging from electronic events in the bulk mineral and in the mineral surface regime. molecular events at interfaces, the statics and dynamics of thinning and rupture of microscopic to molecular intefacial films, the fluid mechanics of bubble- particle events, the dynamics of air-water-solid colloid states in a flotation machine, etc. etc. D.W. Fuerstenau, whom we honour in this symposium has made unique contributions to many of these diverse physico-chemical and technological sub-processes. The present paper is concerned with a number of observations of the behaviour of minerals in flotation cells and the surface science of some mineral sulfide-water systems. We do not intend to be comprehensive in our analysis, but rather to highlight the challenges that face the scientific masochist who chooses to understand "froth flotationn. In what follows, emphasis is placed quite deliberately on technologically relevant, dynamic or realistic flotation processes i.e. the recovery in a froth of a given sulfide mineral particle of a given size and history from synthetic or actual ores in a flotation cell. Human operators, geological conditions, equipment changes, mining sequences, and roof conditions are some of the continually changing operating conditions that drive a dynamic mining environment. These dynamic characteristics make it difficult to automatically analyze mining data because attributes change as the mining environment changes. Mine monitoring systems could provide mine managers with much more useful information than they do presently, if automatic analysis were possible. Automatic analysis of sensor data is also key to autonomous mining systems. This paper describes artificial intelligence (AI) and sensor fusion based sensor data analysis techniques developed over the past four years. These techniques were used to classify machine operating events by continuously monitoring machine power usage in a continuous miner section at an under- ground coal mine. The result is a report similar to an industrial engineering time study. First, numerical pattern classification techniques broadly identify operating events. However, domain knowledge about inter-machine and intra-machine interactions is necessary to identify and refine dynamic event boundaries. By implementing AI and sensor fusion based techniques we are able to classify machine events more accurately and recognize more specific events. These techniques could easily be applied to many different mining sensor data applications

The Chino Mines Company, a Kennecott-Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, New Mexico, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/ concentrator modernization commenced in 1980 and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34.0 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was constructed near the mine using semi-autogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of salable copper.

The importance of geology in ore reserve estimation has been stated by several authors. King et, a1 (1982) reported that the geological factor was the key deficiency where serious weaknesses in ore reserve estimation appeared, especially in grade. The foundation for a successful mining operation is an ore reserve estimate that neither overstates nor understates the true situation as to tonnage and grade. Overestimation of reserves can have devastating economic results. Overestimation of tonnage may lead to wasting money on an overbuilt plant or worse yet, if grade is seriously overestimated also, to undertaking an operation that is doomed to economic failure from the outset. Understated ore reserves can result in building a plant that is smaller than optimum which may result in higher unit costs. At worst, understated tonnage of ore reserves can result in a missed opportunity for a profitable operation. Failure of the ore reserve estimator to properly take into account all geologic and allied factors pertaining to the deposit can result in an ore reserve estimate that is overstated either as to tonnage or grade or both. This paper will focus on these factors and will not discuss rules about distances above or below a drift that should be given a classification of proven or probable, etc. Each deposit has its own particular characteristics which often require modification of general rules for defining limits of proven and probable ore blocks that work satisfactorily in another deposit. A number of references are included which discuss some of these problems. Definitions of ore reserve classifications and an illustration are given in the Appendix.

Two modes of potential loss of oxime extractants in liquid extraction processes for the extraction of copper have been studied. In loss "by chemical degradation, two mechanisms of acid hydrolysis are possible, some reagents degrade primarily in the organic bulk phase, Others at the interface between the organic phase-- phase protects the oxime but salts added to the aqueous acid phase can promote the rate of degradation. The reagents reported on are the LIX series (Henkel Cpn), SME529 (Shell Chem.Co.) and P5100 (Acorga) Loss by organic entrainment in the aqueous phase leaving mixer-settlers has also been studied, parameters investigated including impeller/tank geometry and the phase inlet arrangements. The consequences of extractant loss by the above mechanisms...are commented upon. They include the direct economic cost, the possible environmental problems and the implications for downstream operations such, as electrowinning.

The industrial processing of ores containing precious metals such as gold is generally very mining site specific, e. g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985), vanZyl et. a1. (1988), Fuerstenau and Hendrix (1990), and Hausen et. a1. (1990). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size reduction, size classification, gravity separation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical and/or bacterial leaching, ion exchange and/or solvent extraction, and froth flotation. Gold occurs in the earth's crust on the average in very low concentration estimated by various sources to be between two and five parts per billion. For a specific ore deposit to be considered as an economic source of gold, generally a concentration of near one part-per million (one gram / Mton) or more is required. From a mineralogical viewpoint, gold often occurs in its native or free form. However, it can also occur as gold compounds of telluride, antimony, and selenium contained within either sulfide minerals such as pyrite, arsenopyrite. and pyrrhotite or, to a less extent, within silicate, oxide, and carbonate minerals. In many locations, alloying of gold with silver is found. The optimal processing method for recovering gold is determined by many factors such as the mineralogy of the gold bearing minerals as well as the associated mineralogy of the gangue minerals, the type of liberation profile of the gold bearing minerals upon' size reduction, and the particle size of the gold itself. Free or native gold particles can vary in size from the extreme of large nuggets to very finely disseminated gold associated in a complex sulfide mineral matrix. Typically free gold particles of several hundred microns or larger are efficiently recovered by one or more of a number of gravity based techniques due to the large specific gravity differential of gold (19.3 to 15) versus typical gangue minerals (5 to 2.7). When gold is associated with a sulfide (usually pyrite) matrix, historically most industrial plants involving size reduction and subsequent liberation have operated in a size range of 50 to 80 percent less than 75 microns. Grinding finer than this has been normally not economical unless the ore has a high gold content in the feed ore.

The replacement of Boston’s elevated Highway I-93 running north to south through the heart of the city with 8-lane tunneled roadways, coupled with the underground extension of Highway I-90 eastward to Logan Airport, has earned the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project the position of the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. today. The gigantic interchange featuring numerous ramps where these two main branches of the Artery intersect required the construction of three huge jacked tunnel boxes that were pushed beneath eight active Amtrak and commuter rail tracks that had to remain undisturbed in spite of poor geology and a minimum of cover between the track beds and the tunnel crowns. Ground freezing was chosen as the method of stabilizing the soil over the tunnels, and it was extended in one area to stabilize the ground at the intersection between the tunnels and an abutting deep cut-and-cover excavation. Because many standard geotechnical instruments consist basically of open standpipes filled with water, it was a major challenge to keep them de-iced and in a condition to provide data on vertical and lateral ground movements. An investigation was carried out to study the microscopic structure of coal in order to understand the phenomenon of methane migration. A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEH) was used to study the surface and pore structure of bituminous coal taken from an underground mine. Micrographs obtained showed the highly porous nature of coal which explains the large quantities of gases that remain within the pores in the compressed and adsorbed forms. These micrographs further showed that most of the pores within the coal matrix are the 'dead-end' type and do not contribute much towards the flow of gas. The most important finding was that solid coal has a network of cracks and fractures indicating that it is these cracks that are primarily responsible for the gas flow, rather than the pores. The size and distribution of the pores within coal influence the capacity of coal to retain methane but movement of the gas molecules is the responsibility of the microfractures. Any mathematical modeling to simulate gas flow through coal must take this into account. For purposes of modeling, the structure of coal can be considered to have dual porosity. First, the gas molecules are released from the pores and there is a gradual migration towards the fractures. Once the gas reaches the fractures, its movement is eased greatly along these fractures.
