"Today’s underground construction megaprojects are tremendous feats of engineering on a massive scale, excavating through ground conditions once thought impossible, using new and innovative contracting practices. But one important truth remains unchanged; projects are built by people. What separates winning projects from the rest? Great people, working in great organizations. In straight-talk fashion this paper sets forth fundamental differences between good project leaders and bad ones, on topics ranging from client relations, design management, and scheduling, to use of the whiteboard, and everything in between. Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Please note that “PM” refers loosely to anyone on the project management team not just the “Project Manager”. We also wish to preface this with the following cautionary statements: • The authors do not pretend to be the “Good PM” in all cases. In fact, we’re almost certainly the “Bad PM” for some. We aim to improve on those areas. • It has been said that “The only real training for leadership is leadership.” (Antony Jay) We all started somewhere, and nobody has 20 years of experience on day one. • Converting this text into some sort of prescriptive checklist would be a disservice to the evolution of project management. "INTRODUCTION Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, explosive. Others can be early reporters of potential problems. It has previously been shown that analysis by gas chromatograph can the most accurate conventional analytical tool for common mine gas mixtures when used correctly. There are some other detection methods (e.g hand held sensors), but they do not detect many situations which are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). Examples include explosive hydrogen mixtures, toxic carbon dioxide levels, and some explosive mixtures of methane with oxygen. (Reference our previous paper). There are several reasons for mines to consider onsite GC analysis. (1) Timeliness of results. Samples can be taken and analyzed immediately. Samples do not have to be shipped to a lab and wait for results. (2) Ability to run greater number of samples a lower for the same cost. This allows mine to increase the number of samples taken to be more informed about the gases/conditions of the mine without the worry of financial constraints. (3) Fewer sample media needed, and there is no wear and tear or cost from shipping them offsite. When samples are shipped offsite, those sample media cannot be used to take until the lab returns them when the analysis is done onsite, the sample media can be used again almost immediately. However there are several challenges associated with using GC to analyze mine gas samples onsite. To date there has been a clash of the requirements for a successful analysis, the capabilities of the technology, and the practicalities of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the difficulties in getting accurate reliable data and doing so in an economic way. This whole measurement activity is a cost center for a mine, so there are economic concerns for the mine to address. These concerns are mainly staffing costs, capital costs, maintenance, and consumables costs. A properly staffed and equipped analysis lab, including burdened overhead, costs about $500K per year. At a sampling rate of 10 per day, this is about $140 per measurement for a proper onsite lab."

Demands on available lands will continue to increase due to the projected increase in population and industrial expansion. Though there is an upper limit on the available lands, the multi-use nature of the lands will make it possible to meet these demands. However, this will not happen without adequate planning. Land uses can be broadly categorized as non-renewable and renewable. Lands with mineable resources can be dedicated at some point in time to the extraction of resources. Such a dedication, however long-term, is only temporary because of the non-renewable nature of the mineable resources. Implied here is that the land will be available before and after mining for other uses. Planning for such lands must have the objective that, as far as practicable, no non-renewable uses are pre-empted and no renewable uses are permanently destroyed. The primary aspects of this planning process will be addressed in this paper, These aspects include a discussion of planning responsibility, data needs and availability, the integration of mine planning and post-mining land use planning and a long-term plan for resource conservation and utilization. Minerals, together with agriculture and forestry products, are the primary sources of wealth. Therefore, to avoid land development that may pre-empt future mineral resource utilization, the local planning groups must be aware of the mineralization and mining potential. Much work needs to be done to identify and characterize the mineral resources. Even more work is needed in land use planning for lands with mineral deposits.

The bed filtration of colloidal particles has been modeled by performing a differential particle balance. The balance considered the localized particle deposition rate to be the sum of three rate resistances: 1) mass transfer to a region near the surface; 2) adhesion onto a partially filled surface; and 3) resuspension from a partially filled surface. The differential particle balance equations, one for the free particles and one for the adhered particles, were solved by a finite difference algorithm. The results of this model are compared to experimental filter breakthrough curves.

The apatite deposits in east-central Bahia, Brazil, are about 50 km east of Serra do Jacobina, between lat. 11° and 12° S. and long. 39°40' and 40° W. Apatite was found and examined at 15 localities in a mineralized belt that strikes about N.25° - 30 W. over a distance of about 100 km, but the size of the deposits has not yet been determined. Rocks of the region consist of a sequence of Precambrian migmatites and quartz feldspar paragneisses containing units of pyroxene-rich rocks, lenses of sillimanite-bearing quartzite, amphibolite zones, and calc-silicate marble lenses. Pegmatites and granites of probable anatectic origin (anatexite) are abundant. Faults are numerous. Clastic sediments of Tertiary and Quaternary ages cover most of the area; thus, outcrops of the Precambrian rocks are sparse. Trenches and pits have exposed mineralized zones as much as 10 m wide at some localities within the region. A layer of apatite at least 1 ½ m thick is exposed in a trench at Lagoa do Mel. At Rio do Peixe, vertical shafts have penetrated a mineralized zone, to a depth of as much as 13 m, of which about 25 percent is apatite. Apatite is massive or forms minute crystals, stringers, and disseminated grains in alkalic host rocks. At Apolinario, euhedral crystals of apatite are as much as 50 cm long and 30 cm in diameter. Associated minerals include vermiculite, biotite, scapolite, opal, chalcedony, epidote, montmorillonite, chlorite, kaolinite, sericite, magnetite, and limonite. Apatite is everywhere intimately associated with pyroxene-rich rocks, alkalic syenite pegmatites, and alkalic granite pegmatites. At Panelas-Retiro, apatite is associated with pegmatites, crystalline calcite (vein calcite), vermiculite, and pyroxene-bearing rocks. Analyses of samples show that the apatite is radioactive and rare-earth-bearing. Traces of vanadium and titanium were detected by spectroscopic analysis. The apatite was probably derived from phosphatic zones in the original Precambrian sedimentary rocks and has been crystallized and some mobilized by high-temperature regional metamorphism (higher amphibolite facies) into veins, pegmatites, and along certain preferred beds and fractures. Radiometric and geophysical surveys, in addition to conventional geological investigations, are planned to further investigate the nature and economic potential of the deposits.

The United States is the world's leading producer of phosphate rock. In 1975 according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines' statistics, 44.3 million tonnes (48.8 million short tons) of phosphate rock were produced in the United States', which is 40.6 percent of the world's production2. The major phosphate producing areas of the United States are located in Figure 1 and the production for 1975 is listed as follows: Million Million Short Tonnes Tons Florida and North Carolina 36.9 40.7 Western States 5.3 5.8 Tennessee 2.1 2.3 All of these areas produce phosphate from deposits which are sedimentary marine in origin. Occurrences of phosphate exist throughout the United States in numerous locations that are of both igneous and sedimentary origins. However, these other phosphate occurrences vary greatly in extent and economic significance. Georgia, South Carolina, California, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, Alabama, Kentucky and Virginia are but a few of the states in which phosphate is thought or known to

A salt dome appears to provide the basic medium requirements for the excavation of the 315 foot diameter, unsupported spherical cavity at a depth of 2700 feet required by the AEC in a proposed "decoupling" experiment. Tatum Salt Dome was a natural choice for a site because more geological and hydrological information has been accumulated on Tatum than any other salt dome on the Gulf Coast. The Tatum Dome is a mile in diameter, roughly flat topped, nearly cylindrical in shape and has some overhang at the top. The salt stock has nearly vertical layering of alternating bands of salt and anhydrite. In the vicinity of the dome, adequate fresh water for solution mining is available in surface streams and in subsurface aquifers. A saline aquifer is available for brine disposal. A tentative cavity location was selected near the center of the dome which meets the design criteria established by the AEC.

A large body of readily available Na-montmorillonite is present about 24km (15 miles) east of Fallon, Nevada. The clay is comparable to Wyoming Na-bentonite, but with somewhat less MgO and somewhat more Fe2O3 in its crystal structure. The physical and industrial properties of the Nevada clay are comparable to those of the Wyoming clay. The Na-montmorillonite is presently mined for use as hazardous waste barrier material and as a sealant for canals. It may be economically feasible to process the clay material for removal of impurities.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. N. A. Degerstrom, Inc. has constructed and operated a processing plant approximately five miles north of Soda Springs, Idaho for processing a byproduct phosphate treater dust from Monsanto's elemental phosphorus plant, also located in Soda Springs. The plant is designed to produce agricultural-grade phosphoric acid, gallium, and silver. The design capacity of the plant is 54.4t (60 st) of treater dust per day, which can produce 16,326t (18,000 st) of phosphoric acid, 6,600 kg of gallium, and 6,033 kg (194,000 oz.) of silver per year.

Chemical, mineralogical, and petrographic data have been obtained for suites of plutonic rock samples from the Guichon Creek Batholith of British Columbia and the Mineral-Iron Mountain-Sturgill Peak- Cuddy Mountain-Peck Mountain areas of western Idaho. Intrusions at these two geographically separate localities represent composite plutons ranging from early gabbro through quartz diorite to late grano- diorite and more silicic-alkalic phases. They are early Mesozoic (200 m.y.) in age, and contain porphyry-type mineralization in close spatial and temporal association with late-stage intrusions of porphyry, aplite, pegmatite, and (or) breccia. Country rocks are eugeo-synclinal assemblages of metasedimentary and metavolcanic greenstones of Permian, Triassic, and Jurassic age. The petrochemical evolution of these intrusions, and the effects of subsequent hydrothermal alteration and metallization, are illustrated by standard ternary diagrams of the major oxide and mineralogical data. Samples plotted on an AFM diagram suggest a calc-alkaline magma trend. However, their distributions on NKC and Qz-Kf-Pf diagram show well-defined trondhjemitic (Na20-rich) and tonalitic (quartz-rich) variants to this trend, which are similar in part to those reported for mineralized island arc plutons of the northern Caribbean and southwest Pacific, but which contrast markedly to those for continental plutons of the Bingham District, Boulder Batholith, districts of southern Arizona, and elsewhere.

Lupin is located on the shores of Contwoyto Lake at lat. 65° 48'N, Long. 111° 15'W and lies about 80 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Since start up in 1982 the mine has produced over 2.15 million ounces of gold from 6.66 million tonnes of ore grading 10.63 gm/tonne. Total remaining reserves at 1993 year end were 5.1 million tonnes at a grade of 9.11 gm/tonne (1.65 million ounces). This is sufficient for 7 -8 years at the present annual production rate of about 200,000 ounces. The Centre and West Zones of the deposit are open to depth. The deposit is in an Archean metaturbidite sequence of the Contwoyto Formation, which has been mapped as part of the Yellowknife Supergroup of supracrustal metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks making up part of the Slave Geologic Province. These rocks have been subjected to regionar and contact metamorphism and to several phases of deformation. Six stages of Archean plutonism have been identified and all Archean rocks have been cut by Proterozoic diabase dyke swarms. Gold mineralization in the Lupin deposit is commonly fine grained and associated with pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in amphibolitic banded iron formation. The gold-bearing portions of the host iron formations are characterized by the presence of multiple quartz veins and the pervasive replacement of grunerite by hornblende. In sparsely mineralized portions of the host iron formation, zoning of sulfides about quartz veins is clearly seen with the arsenopyrite halo being more restricted around the veins than the pyrrhotite halo. In well mineralized portions, quartz vein densities approach one vein per metre along strike. In these areas pyrrhotite distribution in the iron formation is more pervasive and the rock takes on the appearance of a banded sulphide rock.

Over 80% of Australia's population lives within 200 km of the coast, 70% in 10 major coastal cities. Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

The purpose of this study was to seek and evaluate possible relationships between the composition of coal refuse, as expressed by washability data, and factors affecting the product ion of a lightweight aggregate from refuse by bloating. The study was related to an intense program in the Department of Mineral Preparation at the Pennsylvania State University to study the possible elimination of air pollution from coal refuse fires by producing a low- carbon secondary refuse. Another phase of this program is considering possible uses of such a secondary refuse. Thus one study was to determine if a lightweight aggregate could be produced from this new refuse material and what effect the nature of refuse beneficiation would have upon the characteristics of a commercial aggregate product.

The increasing cost of developing new mines and the need to mine more marginal deposits have led mining companies to use more sophisticated estimation methods such as kriging. But until recently, coal mining companies have shown little or no interest in these techniques. However, the stringent quality controls which are now placed on coal have led to a surge in interest in improved estimation methods. This can be seen from the -, number of research projects by private companies and governmental agencies on the application of geostatistics to coal reserve estimation. At present, most of these programs are centered on the problem of estimating the tonnage and the average grade (i.e. ash percent, sulphur content, calorific value, etc.) of the coal in-situ. See, for example, Sabourin (1975), Woods (1976, 1979), Pauncz and Nixon (1979) and Armstrong (1980). These studies show that the established techniques of linear geostatistics can be applied successfully to coal deposits. The study by Woods is particularly interesting because he had access to the actual production figures as well as the initial sample data from the no 2 seam in the Greenside Colliery owned by the Anglo-American Corporation. He showed that the estimates obtained by kriging were consistently closer to the actual production figures than those given by three other estimation methods. This confirms the superiority of kriging as a method of estimating block values for coal. Another advantage of geostatistics is that it can be used to determine the optimal spacing between drill holes. An example of this is given by Armstrong for the coking coal deposit in the Bowen Basin, Australia.

As noted by McKinstry (1948), "How to deal with erratic high samples is one of the knottiest problems in ore estimation." He described a variety of approaches and methods to alleviate the problem through the averaging and weighing of assay data and by "cutting" or "clipping" of the erratic assays. Bird (1991) elaborated on ways of dealing with the nugget effect (erratics). He listed several procedures for cutting. Bird's list has been reproduced and/or added to by several authors including Vallee (1992) and Stone and Dunn (1993). Missing from each of these otherwise excellent reviews is a definition, description or guideline to recognition of an "erratic," or just where or when cutting is warranted or justified.

This paper summarizes recent developments in modeling of underground coal slurry haulage networks for determination of optimum design and operating parameters. The model presented here is based on a stochastic dynamic programming formulation, applicable in any typical room-and-pillar and/or longwall mining configuration commonly practiced in the United States. The formulation and the structure of the model is general enough to handle design problems involving more than one face and mining method. Given the stochastic operating characteristics and a system layout, the model can be used to determine the equipment configuration and operating regimes that minimize the overall unit cost of coal haulage.

The current interest in sulfur recovery from coal measures is indicated by a recent report prepared for the Public Health Service (1) It was noted that the concentration of pyrites to a product containing 42-48 percent sulfur should be relatively easy with present equipment. It was also pointed out that a utility potential exists for the high-grade iron concentrate which results as a by-product of the consumption of pyrites in the acid-making process. However, economics, marketing characteristics, location, transportation, pyrite levels and coal characteristics all strongly influence the feasibility of fostering industrial development of such processes. The extent of pyrite recovery and product quality is intimately related to pyrite particle size and its degree of liberation, a consideration usually given greater emphasis in metal ore preparation than in processing coals. Consequently, fine crushing to nearly 20 mesh probably will be essential for maximum practical processing. It appears that any process separating pyrites from a coal must involve a reprocessing of the normal preparation plant refuse, although some yields can be attained from certain existing operations as products from, a shaking table or a jig. Further, the existence of millions of tons of coal refuse cannot be ignored as a mined source of raw materials. The recovery of saleable products from such wastes, although untried on a large scale under current conditions, not only offers a realistic source of sulfur but also would achieve a secondary refuse with the minimal contents of substances which incite and propagate the burning of organic and inorganic combustibles. These silicate materials, thus beneficiated, also offer some potential for economic utilization. Some significant tonnages of pyrites have been produced from coal measures in the past, but the experience was, in general, not consistent with current coal preparation practice. The processes involved did not include cyclones and heavy media; nor were they carries out under the sociological environment concerned with pollution as exists today.

Although the fundamental principles of hindered bed classifiers are relatively simple, the complex interactions between the operating parameters provide a degree of difficulty that hinders the ability for on-line plant optimization. Thus, a dynamic population balance model was developed for determining the hindered settling velocity of particles varying in density and size. The steady-state results of the model include partition curves as a function of particle size and density as well as metallurgical data. A statistical comparison of the simulation results with those obtained from industrial units reveal a high level of accuracy with adjusted R2 values greater than 0.95.
