In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural-stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10 to 25.95 percent. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone’s physical-mechanical properties, such as uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity were determined to be more than 70 percent. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81 percent risk of hand-arm vibration. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural-stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

Fly ash is a by-product generated by the combustion of coal in thermal power plants. Its disposal is a major environmental concern for these power plants. Though a considerable part of fly ash is used in cement making and brick manufacturing, a substantial quantity remains unutilized. Bentonite is commonly used as binder in the micropelletization of process waste to attain the mechanical strength required for handling and transportation. The present paper deals with the partial replacement of bentonite with fly ash in the micropelletization process without affecting the quality of the micropellets. The mechanisms of both the binders are discussed. The bonding of particles by bentonite is a physical mechanism, while fly-ash bonding is a chemical mechanism. Silica and alumina are the major constituents present in fly ash along with lime. In the presence of water, the alumino-silicates and unhydrated lime present in fly ash undergo a pozzolanic reaction and form cementitious bonds, which hold the particles together. Use of fly ash as alternative binder for bentonite has cost benefits besides providing a better utilization option for fly ash.

Present and emerging technologies are renewing interest in domestic rare earth elements (REE) production. REE deposits throughout the North American Cordilleran alkaline-igneous belt are being re-examined for their economic potential. In New Mexico, the mineral deposits found in this belt are associated with Eocene–Oligocene alkaline to calc-alkaline igneous rocks. Four areas in New Mexico have been examined for their REE potential. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns are similar for all four districts, even though different REE minerals are found. Crandallite, xenotime, bastnäsite and brookite are found in fluorite veins and carbonatites at Laughlin Peak. Bastnäsite was extracted during fluorite processing from 1954-1980 from the Gallinas Mountains, where samples as high as 8% total REE are found in fluorite veins. Other REE minerals include agardite, parasite, xenotime, and monazite. Allanite, thorite and as much as 8133 ppm total REE are found in fluorite veins in the Capitan Mountains. In the Cornudas Mountains, exploration along the outer edge of the Wind Mountain nepheline syenite laccolith and within phonolite dikes, plugs, skarns and carbonate-replacement deposits in Chess Draw contain as much as 3110 ppm TREE, hosted in eudialyte, monazite, bastnäsite, and calciocatapleiite.

Water is the mainstay for beneficiation of fine size coal and minerals; however, it is also the least desirable constituent in the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat conduction/ absorption capacity of individual particles, which differs for different species of minerals. When a mixture of fine material is exposed to a radiant energy source, the various solids present in the mixture will absorb heat energy depending on their heat-conducting properties and there will be a difference in the surface temperature of the particles. When this differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt, which is coated with a low temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt and relatively cooler particles will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal, and quartz of 6 × 18 mesh particle size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating system variables. Preliminary tests results showed that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) is the new Light Rail Transit (LRT) network of Montreal, Canada. This new LRT network uses a century-old Mont Royal Tunnel (MRT) to connect Downtown Montreal to the north side of the Island of Montreal by passing through Mount Royal Mountain. This railway double track horseshoe tunnel is approximately 5 km (3.1 mi.) long, 8.8 m (29 ft.) wide and 5.5 m (18 ft.) high, with a constant 0.6% grade. Due to different geological characteristics of the surrounding ground, varied from hard rock to soft soil, different cross sections and excavation methods were adopted for construction of this tunnel. In order to use MRT in the modern transit system, the tunnel needed to be inspected, rehabilitated and be compliant to the recent safety standards. This paper presents a summary of history and characteristics of the existing tunnel plus the implemented steps to upgrade the tunnel. It includes the details of the structural inspection and rehabilitation methods of the tunnel. Further, this paper summarizes the procedures for the space proong, construction of the separation center wall, and the tunnel enlargement. It also describes parts of complications encountered during the construction and solutions implemented to tackle these issues.

Regular entry trusses are used in headgates, tailgates, roadways and intensely-faulted areas. These trusses have proven to give the required support and maintain roof stability even under major abutment loading conditions for both the re-treating and advancing longwalls. Areas previously requiring steel arches have been eliminated. A special Continuous Entry Truss? provides permanent support to adjacent tunnel/crosscut zone for more than 300 feet in each tunnel. The continuous nature of the tensioned truss allows sup-port forces to be placed on the roof in not just the two-dimensions of regular trusses, but in a full three-dimensions. A newly developed Roktruss? provides support in an arched 30-foot high rock zone. The Roktruss? allows truss support concepts to be used in an opening with a curved roof.

The title of the paper which I have been asked to present is somewhat misleading it infers in fact that there is a definite coalbed height below which raps or canopies cannot be applied to electric face equipment. Although this may be so with regard to certain pieces of existing equipment under certain conditions, to date we do not have enough experience to determine this magic number. Therefore MESA is continuing to hold the line on the time frames stipulated in Section 75.1710-1 of the Mandatory Safety Standards - Underground Coal Mines, which at this point in time requires these protective structures in mining heights of 60 inches or more. In order to give you an idea why we are taking such a firm stand on this matter, I believe it is necessary to describe some of the background work that was done prior to promulgation of the regulations and to give a resume of our experience since the requirements have become effective. Initially MESA made field investigations of all underground mines to determine what the state of the art was in the use of cabs and canopies for protecting equip¬ment operators from falls of roof. These studies revealed that the application was basically in its infancy and what progress had been made was due to the impetus of the mine operators themselves. Manufacturers of electric face equip¬ment provided these structures only on the direct order from the mining company and built them to their specifications. In talking to the operators and the miners in mines where cabs or canopies were in use, it was the consensus that these structures did improve safety and that although originally there was some reluctance on the part; of the miners to work in the confines of a cab or canopy, mast would not work without them once they had been adapted to the equipment.

Among all secondary resources, spent catalyst is one of the most important as it contains valuable metals such as vanadium, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and aluminum. Compared with the extraction of metals from minerals, the recovery of valuable metals from spent catalysts has the advantages of a simple process, a short production cycle, lower investment cost, and less environmental impact.

The aim of this study is to present hazard classifications of location, type and causes of accidents in the Turkish coal-extracting industry using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In this study, fatal mine accidents were analyzed by pairwise comparison and weighting, and the most important hazards were identified by determining the effective main and sub-criteria among location, type and causes of accidents. For this purpose, first-, second- and third-level hazards consisting of location, type and causes of accident were determined by using the data of fatal mine accidents in underground and openpit coal mining in Turkey between 2010 and 2020.

"Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."

Arizona embraces portions of two major western-U.S. physiographic-geologic provinces and a smaller, local one. These exert fundamental control over the geologic framework and associated earth-material resources and potential. The Mogollon Rim diagonally crosses the State and separates the Colorado Plateau Province to the northeast from the Transition Zone and Basin and Range Province to the southwest. More than 90 percent of the population, production of nonfuel minerals, agricultural land, and water resources are in the Basin and Range part of the State. In 1981 Arizona was ranked number one in the Nation with respect to the value ($2.56 billion) of nonfuel-mineral production. About 8.2 percent of this amount ($212.9 million) can be attributed to nonmetallic (industrial) materials. Although a diversity of nonmetallic substances is produced and some are exported, the bulk is utilized within the State and is directly related to market growth. Since 1950 there has been a fourfold increase in Arizona's population, a concomitant twelvefold jump in sand-gravel production (tons), and a twentyfold increase in "stone" production. New industries developed during this time include cement, salt (and storage of liquid petroleum gas products in solution cavities in salt), zeolite, hydrofrac sand, vitrified clay pipe, crushed marble products (teed additive, pool sand, roofing granules, etc.), and "rock" wool. Most of these newer industries serve out-of-State as well as in-State markets. In 1981 at least 225 industrial mineral or rock deposits were being worked to produce about 10 tons of material per Arizona resident per year. In 1980 the relative values of basic industrial minerals produced in the State, by major group, were cement and lime (51.6 percent); gravel (26.5 percent); sand (11.8 percent); stone (4.6 percent); and others (5.5 percent). Detailed knowledge of the nonmetallic rock-and-mineral content of most Arizona ranges and basins is lacking. Exploration opportunities in this sun-belt growth region appear encouraging.

Research has determined that ground control interaction problems in mining over a previously mined seam occur primarily in the tension zone created at the edge of the subsidence trough, and in areas above lower seam remnant pillars. Based on empirical and analytical studies, planning options for improving conditions on the upper seam have been developed to optimize extraction while minimizing the negative effects of seam interactions. These options include prediction of potential upper seam damage, guidelines for minimizing inevitable negative interaction effects, and recommended opening and pillar sizes, shape, and orientations, as well as design and planning procedures.

Coal degradation is the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes due to the continuous forces of attrition and gravity to which coal is subjected during mining, handling and preparation. The objective of this paper is to determine the extent of degradation that a coal slurry experiences when transported through pumps and pipelines. The examination of degradation results for a number of different coal slurries have indicated that the extent of breakage is dependent upon the physical properties of coal and the time span of circulation. These results have also indicated that certain size fractions of coal are more susceptible to breakage than others.

Large reserves of coal and uranium exist in the San Juan Basin of northwestern New Mexico. The mining and development of these resources necessarily also involves depletion of area water resources and disturbance of the hydrogeologic framework. In an effort to better define the water resources and hydrogeologic framework of this region, the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, the U. S. Geological Survey, and the State Engineer's Office are presently engaged in a cooperative study of the Hydrogeology and Ground-Water Resources of Northwestern New Mexico. The purposes of this paper are to introduce our project, review tine coal and uranium resources of the San Juan Basin, and discuss the various hydrogeologic considerations recognized in their exploitation.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. From a distance, the 0.75-km (0.5-mile) rail line that sits in the shadows of Vale-Inco?s Stobie Mine outside of Sudbury, Ontario could be mistaken for a standard conveyor belt hauling ore from the nearby mine. But with its large, yellow-painted loop and interconnected green rail cars that invert themselves on the loop before correcting with a smooth rollover further down the track, one might assume that this is some sort of test track for a new roller coaster. The fact of the matter is that it is the proving ground for Rail-Veyor technology, a technology that the company hopes will one day change the face of ore transportation in surface and underground mines around the world. With a line of linked, low-profile rail cars that are capable of carrying up to 1 t (1.1 st) per car of ore by way of simple, above ground, lightweight rail track, the technology is not groundbreaking. In fact, it was developed in the 1960s for the French State Railroad. A demonstration plant for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research was installed in 2000 and the first commercial under-ground installation was in 2007 in South Africa at Harmony Gold?s Phakisa Mine. There, a 4.7-km- (2.9-mile-) long tram between two shafts operates three Rail-Veyor trains on a shared track. The difference is that the application that is being tested day-and-night in Sudbury is getting closer to wide production, thanks to the use of computer controlled automation that has helped turn an old idea into a cost-effective modern solution.

A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical when responding to a fire incident, as an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring fire contaminants, such as toxic gases and smoke, unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been developed by researchers and scholars around the world. However, those proposed methods rely heavily on a vast number of mine ventilation simulations, which is time-consuming and computer-resource intensive, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this study, a derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation is developed and implemented into the MFIRE mine fire simulation software. The results from the derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The derivative method is proved to be reliable and accurate.

Geologists searching for carbonate rocks suitable for chemical uses traditionally have relied on extensive laboratory testing in order to locate strata or zones that might be suitable for mining. However, when considering the significant time and costs involved in sampling and performing chemical analyses, any exploration technique whereby fewer samples and analyses are needed would be of great value. In other words, if the exploration geologist could "zero-in" on select areas, considerable time and money could be saved. In general, the major-element chemistry of carbonate rocks is determined by the abundance of the minerals present. CaO occurs with CO2 as the mineral calcite, which is the primary mineral comprising allochems, matrix and sparry cement; MgO is found in high-magnesium calcite (many calcite fossil species contain appreciable amounts of MgO in solid solution), dolomite, and chlorite; iron occurs in pyrite and in limonitic stylolites, as well as in chloritic and glauconitic clay minerals; materials containing abundant Si02 are microcrystalline quartz (chest) silt-sized quartz, and clay minerals; and Al203 is found primarily in illitic, kaolinitic, and chloritic clay minerals. The presence or absence of these minerals determines the chemical composition of the carbonate rooks.

In recent times, smelter off gases treatment plants have become more efficient and environmentally friendly. Where in the past it was acceptable to process only high strength, treatable furnace gases, new smelters must now treat primary gases and abate dust and SO2 from secondary gases: Processing smelter gases can present some interesting challenges. Some equipment can see varying concentrations of sulfuric acid, up to the boiling point, with a periodic table of contaminates thrown in for good measure. Treating weaker secondary gases have, in the past, been cost prohibitive. Nowadays, new technology, like physical absorption or catalytic carbon, show promise for economically treating low strength secondary gases. Modem smelters do a much better job of treating the SO2 laden gases generated by the smelting process but significant challenges remain.

The 86th Annual Meeting of the SME Minnesota section/74th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium partnered with the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)?s Iron Ore Symposium for a historic joint conference, held this year in Duluth, MN, April 15- 17. One of a flurry of recent collaborations between SME and CIM, the joint conference was a natural fit for the conference held in the heart of the Iron Range. As CIM National President Terence Bowles said in his joint keynote with SME President Jessica Kogel, ?The U.S. imports $51 billion from Canada and Canada imports $38 billion the U.S.; that?s 50 percent of Canada?s exports and 51 percent of its imports.? The two countries? economies are linked, and nowhere more closely than in their iron ore mining activities. Kogel opened the conference with a plenary speech identifying the top 10 issues facing mining and how these issues present opportunities for mining companies. She said that it is important that the mining industry stay flexible and adapt to changing conditions, or it will go the way of the dinosaur. However, she said that these challenges can lead to new opportunities. For example, one of the major challenges facing mining is the current state of risk aversion among investors, which makes for ?less money in the pipeline.? However, this situation creates a better climate for mergers and acquisitions, which is another, less risky way to get funding. Likewise, another challenge globally is geopolitical risk; this challenge is likely to drive growth toward stable countries, which was good news for an audience composed mostly of Minnesota and Canadian mining industry personnel. One of the highlights of Kogel?s address was a triangle illustrating the interdependent nature of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (Fig. 1). This triangle consists of four equal components: the social environment, transparency, local and global impact and future generations. The most important takeaway, Kogel said, was that sustainable development and environmental and social responsibility, while they do add to the cost of doing business, are no longer optional.
