Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis. Uranium is an element incompatible with respect to the major rock-forming minerals crystallizing from granitic magma, entering in- stead trace minerals such as zircon. The relationship between the saturation limit (SL) for such a mineral and the bulk distribution coefficient (Do) for U is central to understanding the distribution of U and its availability to late- stage fluids which can form ore deposits directly, or labile U which can be remobilized later. Low SL values imply early crystallization of zircon, but in very small proportions, minimizing Do and maximizing the degree of enrichment of U in late-stage fluids. Thus, granitic rocks with low Zr contents (due to a low saturation limit for zircon) are most likely to evolve U- enriched differentiates; this will be reflected in a high U content of the zircons (but not necessarily high U abundances in whole-rocks). Thus, the ratio of the U content of zircon to the Zr content of the corresponding whole-rock is potentially a very useful parameter in identifying granitic rocks which are most likely to have U-enriched solutions associated with them. The granitic rocks associated with the U deposits of the Midnite Mine area, Washington, have geochemical characteristics which fit very well the model presented here. The rocks are very low in Zr (100 ppm) and contain zircons with extremely high U contents (3,000-4,000 ppm).

Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft). The cost with the road volume is 2.6 million x 3 = $7.8 million.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau's coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

Boreholes are used for many purposes in mining operations, petroleum engineering, and construction works. Numerous factors affect the performance of drilling equipment. Researchers continue to work on the variable drilling parameters that can be adjusted in order to reach more efficient drilling operations. Penetration rate is an essential indicator in drillability analysis and estimating. This parameter is of great importance in mining projects. There are almost no models that can estimate the penetration rate for core drilling operations. Under the abovementioned circumstances, this paper focuses on developing models that allow estimating the penetration rate based on rock material properties. During the conduct of this study, drilling experiments under 11 different pressure forces were performed on 8 different rock units, and the equations which estimated the penetration rate depending on the physico-mechanical properties of the rock samples were derived. Experiments were carried out under different pressure forces to investigate the effect of the pressure force on the derived estimation models. The obtained results allowed deriving equations that ensured estimating the penetration rate based on the physico-mechanical properties of the rocks and the applied pressure force. Using these equations, the penetration rate in core drilling operations can be estimated.

The Upgraded Coal Interest Group (UCIG), focuses on clean, low-cost options for coal-based power generation via pre-combustion, co-firing and reburn options. Its mission is to preserve and expand the economic use of coal for energy. By reducing the fuel costs and environmental impacts of coal-fired power generation, existing units become more cost effective and thus new units utilizing advanced combustion technologies are more likely to be coal-fired. Two great forces are reshaping the power generation industry, the Clean Air Act Amendment and deregulation of generation. The Clean Air Act Amendment is forcing change by making it necessary for power producers to plan for reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and possibly trace elements. At the same time, deregulation of generation is forcing utilities to focus their attention closely on the short term impact of any change on cost of power. Fuel is a utility's largest cost element; maximum fuel flexibility will be a utility's best weapon in an environment of rapid change. In a regulated environment, a utility was limited in how involved he might get into fuel supply, in a purely deregulated environment he need only be guided by the impact on the bottom line. It is clear that these two forces will promote a close look at factors such as coal upgrading which can have an impact on the availability of low sulfur coal or emission of NOX and trace elements.

Maintenance of a constant load setting throughout longwall support units and selection of the proper initial bearing capacity depending on the type of roof strata are the basic factors that ensure good performance of roof support in a longwall. These requirements can only be met by hydraulic support. The greatest advantage of hydraulic support is achieved when uniform pressure is imposed on the roof throughout the length of the longwall. Such support, however, is provided only if each of the support units acts with the same force against the roof, i.e., has the same setting load. In such cases, the roof behaves like a uniform plate without bending and shearing stresses, thereby ensuring an undisturbed structure. Without a positive set value system, achieving an equal setting load for all units of the longwall support is impossible. Due to alterations of the feed line pressure of support units as well as some reasons related to man's psychology, operators extend the height at different setting loads. This produces nonuniform roof stress, and disturbs the structure. Consequently, the roof usually cracks. The author has developed a positive set value system, which is described in this Technical Note. Selection of the setting load Two pressure values in the feed lines are usually applied in longwall hydraulic systems. Lightweight support is fed by 25 MPa (250 bar) liquid, while heavy duty units receive a nominal pressure of 31.5 MPa (315 bar). Such pressure is required not only for the props but also to power the adjust¬ment jacks and the advancing ram. If the feed pressure is too low, there will be difficulty in shifting the unit despite the inversion system of the advancing rams. On the other hand, for many roof types, the feed pressure often appears to be too high when applied as the setting load pressure. An excessive setting load acts too strongly against the roof, crushing weak strata close to the roof. The author has recognized a case where an excessive setting load destroyed not only the nearby roof strata but also the strata above a 2-m (6.6-ft) sandstone layer. In addition, an excessive setting load relieves the side¬walls, increasing the resistance when using cutting machines. As a result, the yield of coarse coal is diminished, and increased fines dominate in the final product, lowering its economic value. As indicated, selection of the proper setting load, depend¬ing on the mining and geological conditions of the extracted seam, is extremely important. In some mines, measures applied to prevent disturbances include reduction of the feed line pressure by adjusting the feed pump valve. The disadvantage accompanying reduced feed line pressure is more difficult operation in advancing the ram. Due to the reduced feed line pressure, the force of the advancing ram is much lower than the designed value. Other designs suggest using a third feed line. However, installation of supplementary valves on the support units is required, a time-consuming and expensive procedure. The disadvantages of the powered supports are eliminated by a system designed by the author. So far, such a method of setting load control has not been used in any type of support. Setting load control unit The designed positive valve set for prop loading and the setting load control correspond to existing control systems for hydraulic powered support. The layout of the unit connected to the hydraulic prop control is presented in Fig. 1. The unit is marked LIDS. It incorporates three valves that may operate separately or connected. Valve A automatically opens and closes with liquid flow in the prop feed circuit. The valve is opened when the canopy touches the roof and closed when the support unit is withdrawn. Valve B serves as the setting load control. Valve C automatically opens and closes the flow in the line connecting the under-piston space of E to the prop F with the separator G. The valve block of each support prop is marked BZ. The UDS unit is connected by the hydraulic lines to the F prop control circuit. A valve is connected by H to pressure line J and by K to the G separator. In the UDS-3 version, line L is connected to M, linking the over-piston space of F prop with the G separator. Valve B is linked with valve A by a connector; it is also connected to the under-piston space E of prop F by line P. Valve C is fixed between lines K and P, connecting space E of prop F with the separator G. When setting the support, the liquid flows from line J through separator G, the BZ valve, and valve C to the space E of prop F. When reaching the roof with the canopy, valve A is opened and C closes. In this way it is impossible for the operator to cause the liquid pressure in space E of prop F to reach the level of line J. The prop pressure is set by valve B of the UDS unit. When withdrawing the support, valve C is automatically opened and A closed. Three UDS units have been fabricated and are designated

INTRODUCTION Geotechnical models, particularly those based on the finite element method, have been available to aid in en¬gineering design of underground mining excavations for over ten years. Despite this fact there are remarkably few cases of their use in mine design documented in the literature. It is therefore to be anticipated that many potential users of these models are relatively unaware of their capabilities and limitations and also of the form and detail of geotechnical data needed for their success¬ful application. This subsection attempts to address this problem by discussing the different types of numerical models now available and by noting how some of them have been used to study a variety of problems associated with underground mining. The subsection concludes by discussing the applica¬tion of the displacement discontinuity method to the de¬sign of possible mining systems for the copper-nickel deposits of northeastern Minnesota. The object of the analyses, which were nonsite specific, was to determine the significance of geotechnical parameters, such as ini¬tial stress and rock structure, on the stability of under¬ground excavations and hence to provide guidance for future geotechnical investigation. NUMERICAL MODELS In the geomechanical design of underground mining openings, use is made of numerical models that repre¬sent or simulate the large-scale mechanical behavior of rock. There has been less interest in analysis involving fluid flow and heat transfer, but with increasing interest in such areas as in-situ retorting and solution mining it is likely that there will be a growing need for numerical models embracing and coupling all three physical proc¬esses. However, the emphasis in this subsection will be on mechanical behavior. Models which simulate such behavior will be divided into two groups: continuum models and discontinuum models. These will be dis¬cussed in turn in order that some insight into alternative solution strategies and their merits may be gained. Continuum Models Almost all geomechanical numerical models must be classed as continuum models even though particular computer codes incorporate special provisions for rep¬resenting discontinuities such as faults, bedding planes, or joints. They are continuum models because they pro¬vide solutions for cases where material behavior is governed by the differential equations of continuum mechanics. Two basic solution strategies for such equa¬tions may be identified immediately: the differential ap¬proach and the integral approach. In the differential approach a means of approximating the differential equations over the entire region of interest is sought. In the integral approach use is made of fundamental solutions from continuum mechanics, and these are used to construct a solution to the whole problem, making approximations only on the boundaries of the region of interest. The several differential and integral methods are identified in Table 1. Differential Methods: Problems in continuum me¬chanics involve the solution of three types of partial differential equations. Two of these govern the behavior in so-called initial value problems, in which variables change both in time and in space. Examples of such problems include nonsteady heat transfer and fluid flow, and stress wave propagation. The last type of partial differential equation governs the behavior in boundary value problems. In these, variation is in space but not in time. Solution of initial value problems may be achieved in two significantly different methods: implicit and ex¬plicit. The differences between these two methods will be illustrated by considering a very simple initial value problem, that of one-dimensional heat diffusion. The equation governing this process may be written as: [ ] where T is temperature, K is thermal conductivity, p is density, c is specific heat, t is time, and x is the spacial coordinate. In finite difference form this equation might be written as: [ ] where the superscripts refer to the time and the sub¬scripts to the spacial location. Several solution strategies for this equation have been used. Two important ones may be illustrated very simply by discussing the signifi¬cance of the superscript * on the right-hand side of the equation. If i + 1 is substituted for * then the second derivative of the temperature with respect to distance is evaluated at the end of the next time step (using tem¬peratures not already known). Such an approach leads to a set of equations involving unknown temperatures and a solution procedure which is referred to as being implicit. The important characteristic of the implicit procedure is that it leads to a set of equations that must be solved for each time at which the temperature dis¬tribution is required. If instead of substituting (i + 1) for the superscript *, i is substituted, the following equation is obtained: [ ] {In this case the new temperature is defined in terms of an already known temperature distribution. This paper presents an overview of surface mining activity in the Canadian oil sands and how the mine operators interact with the province of Alberta's Mine Financial Security Program (MFSP), which took effect April 1, 2011. The MFSP approach to reclamation assurance results in the government of Alberta sharing a portion of reclamation liability through the majority of an oil sand mine's life. In order to determine the potential fiscal magnitude of this shared liability, an examination of the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate asset retirement obligation (ARO) liabilities and other corporate disclosures is presented. The province of Alberta's Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF), which formerly secured oil sands mine reclamation activities is discussed. Reclamation costs in the oil sands are poorly understood. The MFSP provides what it characterizes as a conservative estimate of C$75,000/ha, while corporate disclosures by Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. place expected costs at C$180,000/ha. There is significant risk associated with the apparent uncertainty surrounding reclamation costs.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a major occupational health hazard in underground mine environments, even with available abatement technologies. Prior work has demonstrated that micrometer-scale water droplets, or “fog,” may be effective in removing significant number fractions of DPM from a conditioned exhaust stream. Here, a series of laboratory experiments are described which demonstrate that such a treatment can remove significant DPM mass from an unconditioned stream. The removal mechanism involved coagulation of the DPM and drops. The fog treatment removed about 45 percent more DPM mass on average than no treatment. Varying engine load, flow rate and fog droplet number density did not significantly affect the results under the range of conditions tested. IntroductionDiesel engines have seen widespread use for well over a century due to their relatively high thermal efficiency and fuel economy (Heywood, 1988). Recently, however, the adverse health risks of diesel exhaust have become increasingly clear. The term diesel particulate matter (DPM) is used to refer to the solid components of diesel exhaust, which are an ultrafine mixture of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) and minor constituents including sulfates and metal ash (Kittelson, 1997). DPM is generally considered to occur almost entirely in the submicrometer range. It is classified as a carcinogen (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2013), and epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between long-term exposure to DPM and other combustionrelated fine particulates and increased cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases (Pope et al., 2002; McDonald et al., 2011). Many of the risks of diesel exhaust are associated with the physical and chemical properties of exhaust components (Heywood, 1988; El-Shobokshy, 1994; Kittelson, 1997). Exposures are generally measured and regulated on the basis of mass concentration. However, DPM number density and particle size are increasingly recognized as critical factors in terms of health outcomes (Bugarski et al., 2012; Kittelson, 1997; Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2013; Pope et al., 2002)."

Transportation is one of several important increments in the total market cost of most commodities. On a national average it has been reported that transportation accounts for about 25% of the total cost of a product at the market place. And industrial minerals are no exception. In fact, the proportionate cost frequently exceeds the 25% average. Further, it may actually determine the economic value of a deposit. Transportation may possibly be thought of as a specialized subject of concern only to a traffic manager and of only nominal interest to the mining engineer, the geologist or other technically oriented member of mineral producers' staff. However, in the industrial minerals field, interest is not commonly confined to exploration, development, production or marketing, but is in contrast an overlapping one. In a very real sense this broad area of interest in the total economics of the business is the specialty of the industrial minerals man. And transportation is a vital part of the total picture. Comments in this paper deal with rail transportation.

"Pumping backfilling medium used to fill in holes and caverns in mines is challenging. The often viscous, high solids materials are extremely abrasive and can destroy pumping systems in a matter of days. While a number of options are available, using a progressing cavity pump can often be the best solution. High pressure and capacity capabilities, coupled with low wear rates, ensures reliable cost effective operation.Thickened slurry backfilling for underground/excavation mining applicationsVoids and caverns develop as a result of mining operations penetrating deep into the earth seeking natural resources. After extracting all the ore from a mine, operators need to fill in these voids to preserve the integrity of the mine structure. They do this by pumping in a backfill medium. Each mine uses a different mix of components for backfilling, depending upon the mine’s specific structural requirements and environmental concerns, particularly water requirements. Most backfill mixes contain cement, or another cement-like substance, that acts as a binder to hold the backfill medium together. This is combined with tailings (unused rocks and waste from processing and/or extraction), and may also include chemicals or other binders to increase the material’s strength.Backfill pumping challengesPumping the backfilling medium can be a significant undertaking. This process involves transporting very viscous and high solid materials; the mix may contain 60-80 percent solids. These backfill slurries are extremely abrasive and the viscous material can wreak havoc with pumping systems. The material’s paste-like consistency presents problems for standard centrifugal pumps often used in other mining applications.Added complexity is posed when trying to achieve the required pressure, which depends upon how far away the material has to be pumped. It is not difficult to meet the pressure requirements if mixing the backfill material close to the area to be filled. However, pumping from extreme distances can be problematic — a great deal of pressure is required to transport the material from the mixing area to a distant backfilling site. Ideally, operators should be as close as possible to where they are filling, so they can use a smaller pump with lower power requirements."

The main platinum-group metal (PGM) deposit in the Stillwater Complex is associated with a stratiform zone formed by magma mixing. In general, the intrusion is a large, layered body of Archean age which formed by repeated magmatic injections in- to a single, large, hypabyssal magma chamber. The Complex is broadly divided into the lower Ultramafic series of olivine ± orthopyroxene rocks (1000-2000 m thick) and the upper Banded series of predominantly plagioclase-rich rocks (24500 m thick). The latter is further divided into Lower, Middle, and Up- per Banded zones. The Ultramafic series, plus most of the Lower and Upper Banded zones formed from repeated injections of an olivine-saturated magma, the rocks accumulating from the floor upward with a crystallization order of olivine, or- thopyroxene, plagioclase, clinopyroxene. The olivine-bearing subzones of the Middle Banded zone formed predominantly from a magma which crystallized in the sequence plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene. Olivine-bearing subzone I, with which the PGM mineralization is associated, occurs generally -400 m above the Ultramafic series-Banded series contact. Ore grade mineralization is usually found in plagioclase or plagioclase-olivine cumulates. The platinum-group elements are associated with disseminated base-metal sulfides dominated by the assemblage, pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite. Olivine-bearing subzone I marks an interruption in the crystallization sequence of the Lower Banded zone, with the reappearance of cumulus olivine and an associated change of the crystallization sequence. These changes indicate the addition and mixing of a secondary magma of the same composition as that which later dominated in the formation of the Middle Banded zone. Characteristics associated with mixing include laterally discontinuous but well-developed layers, xenoliths of ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary-type structures such as slum- ping and graded layering. The influx of new magma caused sulfide saturation by one or more of several chemical changes including addition of sulfur, decrease in oxygen fugacity, decrease in FeO, or increase in SiO2. Once an immiscible sulfide liquid was formed, platinum-group elements were scavenged from the magma by the sulfide liquid and segregated.

It is estimated that millions of tons of coal fines are unsaleable each year due to difficulty of drying them economically with conventional mechanical dewatering and thermal drying equipment. The difficulty is due to the fact that coal of small particle size presents a large surface area with polar groups which have a great affinity for water. In order to remove this water thermally, a high temperature is necessary which oxidizes the surface of the coal. This substantially reduces the heating value of the coal. If drying could be satisfactorily carried out at a lower temperature, much more of the heating value of the coal fines could be retained. It was conjectured that acoustic energy applied during the drying process might prove to be of value since acoustic energy has the property of producing cavitation at a liquid-solid interface when the intensity is sufficiently great. This cavitation process produces water at room temperature which can be carried away from the solid surface by a flow of relatively cool air. Hence, moisture removal is made possible at a lower temperature.

Introduction Ball mills are lined drums, either cylindrical in shape or modified cylinders that have either one or both ends of the shell, consisting of conical sections, that rotate about the horizontal axis. Fig. I I shows a cylindrical mill, Fig. 12 a conical ball mill, and Fig. 13 a Tricone ball mill (Hardinge tradename). Steel or iron grinding media, generally in the shape of spheres, are used to grind the ore to the specified product size. In order to obtain more contact area for grinding and to simulate the shape of worn balls, balls have been made with two concave surfaces diametrically opposite each other. Some concentra¬tors, such as Erie Mining Co., have used slugs cut from worn and broken rods to supplement the balls in ball mills and save money otherwise lost as rod scrap. Cylindrical and conical shapes have been tried instead of balls, but balls remain as the most common shape grinding media used in ball mills. Ball mills were a logical development from the earlier pebble mills that used hard natural pebbles such as flint pebbles or sized ore pebbles (obtained from the ore itself) as grinding media. In the early 1900s36 it was found that when cast iron or cast steel balls were used in place of flint or ore pebbles, the mills drew more power and gave greater production capacity. Advances in technology have resulted in the manufacture of ball mills up to 18 ft diam inside shell, drawing up to 8,000 hp. Ball mills are employed to grind ores, especially the more abrasive ores, to finer sizes than can be produced economically in other size¬reduction machines such as roll crushers, hammer mills, and impactors. Ores can be ground dry-dry grinding-or in a slurry-wet grinding-using ball mills. Dry grinding nominally refers to less than I %v moisture by weight. If the moisture content increases by several percent, dry grinding capacity is significantly reduced as shown in Table 17. The usual range of solids content in wet ball-mill slurries is from 65 to 80% by weight. Wet grinding is used to prepare the feed material for unit opera¬tions such as flotation, magnetic separation, gravity concentration, and leaching that require a slurry of liberated valuable mineral and unwanted gangue particles. Dry grinding" is employed to produce feed for agglomeration, pelletizing, and pyrometallurgy processes that require feed that is dry or nearly so and for finely ground industrial mineral products used in the dry state. Dry grinding is also used when minerals cannot be dewatered economically to the required moisture level or when the ground product reacts unfavorably with liquids. For example, cement clinker must be ground dry. Dry grinding requires about 30% more power than wet grinding for comparable size reduction .28 The total power required in a dry¬grinding ball-mill plant including drying may be double that required for a wet-grinding plant. Grinding-media and liner consumption in dry grinding reported as pounds of metal consumed per kilowatt-hour per ton of ore" is 10-20% of that used in wet grinding. The Wabush pellet plant, Point Noire, Que.3o reported ball consumption dropped from 6.3 lb per ton of ore ground to 2.5 lb per ton of ore ground when they converted from wet to dry grinding, and a 30% increase in power consumption. A number of comparisons made on wet and dry grinding of cement raw materials show metal consumption in dry grinding to be 10% of that in wet grinding. The capital costs for wet grinding are generally lower than for dry grinding. When thickening and filtering of the wet-ground product are required, dry grinding may have a lower capital cost. With open-circuit grinding the ball-mill discharge passes directly to the next processing step without being screened or classified and no fraction is returned to the ball mill (Fig. 14). In closed-circuit grinding the ground material, undersize, in the ball-mill discharge is removed either using a screen or a classifier with the oversize being returned to the mill for additional size reduction (Fig. 15). The over¬size material that is returned to the ball mill is called the circulating load. Open-circuit ball-mill grinding requires more power than closed¬-circuit grinding for products containing similar amounts of top-size material. The less the amount of oversize allowed in the product, the longer the ore must remain in the ball mill when grinding in open circuit. This increases the production of extreme fines and thus the consumption of more power. The power required for open-circuit ball-mill grinding can be estimated using the multipliers listed in Table 18 and knowing the power required for closed-circuit grinding to yield the desired product particle size. For example, assuming the desired grind size is 90% passing some specific top size, open-¬circuit grinding would require 1.40 times the power to achieve similar results as closed-circuit grinding.

Booster fans increase air pressure to overcome resistance, the objective being to force adequate amounts of air through distant workings. They are used in areas that are difficult or uneconomic to ventilate with main fans alone. Booster fans are currently permitted in underground coal mines in some countries; the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and Canada have been defined as major users. Booster fans are not allowed in the US bituminous and lignite coal mining operations at the present time due to safety concerns. This paper presents the history of booster fan use in coal mines of the United States during the last 90 years. Changes in regulations, as well as advantages and disadvantages of booster fan use, are discussed. Research and petitions for booster fan use are highlighted in order to bring the debate into focus.

There are two aspects of financing western coal development -- whether there is going to be enough money to finance the prospective large development of the industry, and the specific techniques of raising money for that development. To take the first question of whether there is going to be enough money around to finance your industry, I think it is quite clear that the restrictions on the development of western coal are going to be non- financial. Environmental impact problems are creating the greatest delay in coal mine development, at the moment; but getting enough personnel, mining equipment, railroad equipment, and failure of the Department of Interior to act on leasing federal coal lands all appear likely to create significant bottle- necks in the development of western coal -- larger bottlenecks than financing. Financing appears straightforward for the industry. There are many projections of the financing required to meet Project Independence goals. The National Academy of Engineers estimated that development of 500 million tons per annum of western coal would be necessary by 1985 to meet the Project Independence goals which might require $20 billion of capital spending. It is generally agreed that 500 million tons a year is not a realistic possibility. Carl Bagge?s estimate of production of 250 million tons a year by 1983 appears a more reasonable projection. 6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types.
