The relationships between the amount of light reflected off 21 samples of Florida phosphate and the chemical, composition of the samples were examined. It was found that the reflectivity of a rock is directly related to its chemical composition and that darker phosphates (less light reflectance) have relatively high amounts of iron, organic C and sulfate while lighter-colored rocks were rich in phosphorus, fluorine and aluminum. The use of reflectivity measurements could have economic applications in the phosphate rock industry: color specifications for rock shipments could he met, beneficiations by optical sorting could be performed and semi-quantitative analyses could be made rapidly and inexpensively.

In recent years there has been increasing interest in employing the technique of explosive casting in strip mines. Explosive casting, applied to dragline mining, describes the procedure whereby the overburden is horizontally displaced by blasting causing a portion of the material to be thrown into the previously mined cut. Therefore, it is not necessary to subsequently excavate this waste with the stripping equipment. In addition, allowing the overburden unrestricted movement during the blast most often results in improved fragmentation and enhanced machine productivity. The method is receiving attention because the capital and maintenance costs of stripping equipment has risen rapidly in relation to explosives costs. Improved productivity is necessary to maintain unit costs at an acceptable level.

Background of Erie Mining Company Erie Mining Company, managed by Pickands Mather & Co., is one of the largest producers of iron ore pellets in the United States. The plant is located at Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, sixty-five miles north of Duluth on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range. Taconite Harbor, situated on the north shore of Lake Superior, is the location of its Power Plant and shipping facilities. (Figure 1) Even though the plant commenced operation in September, 1957, its true be-ginning can be traced back to 1931 when Pickands Mather, in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, began investi-gating the possibilities of processing low grade ores. In 1940, Erie Mining , Company was formed. During the early and middle 1940's, laboratory and pilot plant research was proven to a point where a preliminary plant was deemed feasible and built in 1948. This plant had an annual capacity of 203,200 t (200,000 long tons) per year and, until mid-1952, was the only taconite plant in existence using commercial-size equipment. During this period, ownership of Erie Mining Company was expanded to include Interlake, Inc. and The Steel Company of Canada, Limited. In 1953, authorization was obtained from the owners to build a 7.62 M t (7.5 M long tons) per year plant at a cost in excess of $300,000,000.

"The development of fracture zones in surrounding rock mass has significant impact on the stability of underground mine roadways. Detection of the fracture zones is of compelling importance for maintaining roadway stability as well as for safe and speedy excavation of the roadways. This paper presents a study conducted at Dong Bao Wei underground coal mine, where the roadways were developed in diabase rock mass. The roadways suffered severe damages, including sloughing and excessive floor heaving. The borehole imaging technique was applied in the study to observe and detect fracture zone development surrounding the roadway openings. Based on the borehole imaging studies, new roadway support systems were proposed to improve the stability. INTRODUCTION At the Dong Bao Wei Coal Mine three main roadways of the west wing were excavated. The three roadways had semicircle arch cross sections and were at a depth of 650 meters, each being about 750 meters in length. The roadways were driven through a section of thick diabase intrusion, which was softened by water with reduced strength and may turn into powder form under weathering. Site investigation indicated that the roadways in diabase intrusion zone were badly damaged due to severe deformation, and very serious roadway sidewall sloughing and spalling accompanied by severe floor heave often occurred.(Figures 1 and 2) In order to ensure the normal use of the roadway, undercuts were excavated. However, this operation seriously affected the roadway construction progress and increased the amount of roadway support operations as well as the roadway maintenance costs. Furthermore, a roof fall accident occurred in nearby drilling site. The investigation indicated insufficient support provided for the roadways which imposed significant safety hazards and would have serious impact to mining production and subsequent mining activities.The support of the main roadways is a critical task and is the focus of the underground opening excavation work at the mine, since more than 40 years of service life is required from these main roadways. For these roadways, large cross sections with high degree of stability and minimal amount of deformation should be maintained. Therefore, providing sufficient and appropriate roadway supports is of significant importance to the coal mine. In this paper, in order to optimize the roadway supporting system, studies were carried out on the geological structures, lithological characters, roof bolt anchoring features and suitable anchoring layers. The studies were aimed at ensuring the stability of mine roadways, reducing the roadway maintenance costs and providing a safe mine passageway for orderly production and progressive development of the mine"

A study has been conducted to remove iron from sulfate solutions using Eichrom's Dipexo® extractant, P,P'-di(2ethylhexyl) methanediphosponic acid (H2DEH[MDP]). It is found that this extractant can effectively and selectively extract ferric ion from highly acidic solutions. Ninety-nine percent of the iron was extracted from a simulated feed solution in a single stage. The separation factor, Fe/Zn, was 106. Over 90% of the iron in a loaded organic can be recovered in an aqueous solution by reductive stripping. This paper presents the experimental results. A new process for iron removal using Dipex extractant is described and discussed.

Belt network simulators developed in the last two decades are reviewed. Critical parameters in belt network design are identified, and the capabilities of belt simulators in providing values of these parameters are investigated. An alternative design model that optimizes values of the critical parameters is introduced. To illustrate the capabilities of the alternative model, a real life case is treated and the outcomes are discussed.

Mitchell Point Tunnel near Hood River, Oregon is one of the more unique segments of the Historic Columbia River Highway and State Trail being constructed through the Columbia River Gorge. This 650-foot bike/pedestrian tunnel set to open in 2024 is being delivered by FHWA in partnership with Oregon DOT, Oregon State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service. Primarily driven using drill & blast excavation methods through basalt, the shotcrete and dowel-supported tunnel features masonry portals and ve window adits that provide illumination and views of the river similar to the original highway tunnel of many vistas built in 1915 that was removed in 1966 to make way for Interstate 84. This paper summarizes the planning, design, and construction.

Investigation of the costs of industrial accidents dates back to the 1920s. The Bureau of Mines was one of the pioneers in accident cost investigation with numerous studies published between 1928 and 1933. The bulk of these early investigations dealt only with costs which appeared as payouts on company books; that is, the direct cost of insurance premiums and the costs of medical expenses which resulted from industrial accidents. These early investigations, especially the Bureau's study of accident costs in Pennsylvania and Indiana coal mines provided the first real evidence that promotion of industrial safety pays back in dollars as well as in human life and wellbeing. In the 30s and 40s, investigations began to accumulate evidence that industrial accidents impacted more than just the direct operating expenses of a company (i.e., higher insurance premiums). The work of Heinrich pioneered these investigations, and produced strong evidence that the un¬insured costs of accidents far outweighed those costs covered by insurance. Heinrich developed and published a ratio of insured to uninsured costs of 1.4. Despite his cautionary statements about blanket application of this ratio it is used even today to estimate total costs of accidents. Simonds, in the late 40s and early 50s, extended the definitions of uninsured or indirect accident costs and developed what is now regarded as the principal method for estimating the total economic impact of industrial accidents. Simonds' method served as the basis for development of the logic of the Accident Cost Indicator Model (ACIM). However, several departures from Simonds' method were made to satisfy certain requirements imposed by the Bureau of Mines, and because information gathered during the course of our investigation justified a departure. These departures are noted in the discussion which follows.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). In 2015, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico. This total includes 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production in potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. SURFACE SUBSIDENCE IN MINING The consequences of subsidence are becoming progressively more serious as the consumption of an ever- increasing quantity of minerals conflicts with the needs of an expanding population for surface land area. The inevitable result will be an increase in the amount of land area on which undermining is restricted because surface subsidence must be prevented. Designation of land areas that may be undermined, provided that subsidence is controlled and kept within specified limits, also will increase. The decisions as to which land is to be used for urban, agricultural, or other purposes clearly involve considerations that go far beyond the scope of mining technology. Under the authority assigned to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) by the Organic Act (May 16, 1910) and its succeeding amendments and pursuant regulations (30 U.S.C. 1-1 1 ), the Bureau conducts scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and its related problems. Subsidence-control demonstrations that have been conducted under this authority include projects in Wyoming, West Virginia, Illinois, and the Pennsylvania anthracite region. The problenls for technology arc to devise methods for extracting minerals with controlled subsidence in varying geologic settings and for calculating or predicting the amount, extent, and characteristics of the subsidence that accompanies the extraction of our principal minerals mined by high-tonnage methods so that logical choices can be made from the possible alternative approaches. Where underground minerals and fuels are mined and removed, the voids that are created underground generate strong imbalanced stresses in the surrounding and overlying rock strata. The resulting readjustments in the rock masses may cause subsidence of the ground surface. Subsidence implies vertical collapse, because the most conspicuous component of movement is downward. However, the downward component is accompanied by differential horizontal strains that may be more damaging to man-made surface structure.; than the more apparent vertical displacements. SUBSIDENCE CONTROL The most widespread method of alleviating potential subsidence problems in undermined areas has been to backfill mine voids with mine refuse or some other in- expensive material that provides lateral support to the remaining mine pillars and vertical support to the mine roof and overburden. Most USBM backfilling work has been conducted jointly with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in the anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These joint projects were conducted under the authority of the Anthracite Mine Drainage Control Act of July 15, 1955 (Public Law 84-162, as amended), and the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 (Public Law 89-4. as amended). In addition to the Appalachian and mine-drainage projects, the Bureau has either conducted or participated in demonstration projects to develop the "pumped- slurry" method of backfilling mine voids. Three of these projects were conducted in Rock Springs, WY. The first was a field test of the pumped-slurry technique, conducted in 1970 under the combined participation of the City of Rock Springs, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Dowell Div. of the Dow Chemical Co., and USBM (Candeub, Fleissig, 1971). The objective was to demonstrate that a large quantity of sand could be hydraulically injected under pressure through a single borehole, and that filling of the mine voids would be essentially complete. In the earlier "blind-flushing" methods, involving sluicing material through boreholes by gravity, quantities per injection hole ranged from 15 to 765 m3 (20 to 1000 cu yd), and the mine voids were only partially filled. In the first test of the pumped-slurry method, approximately 14 900 m (19,500 cu yd) of sand were injected success- fully through a single borehole. Subsequent information obtained through 43 monitoring boreholes indicated that mine voids below 11 330 m2 (2.8 acres) had been filled. As a result of the successful initial test of the pumped-slurry process, USBM conducted additional backfilling demonstration projects using the new technique. The first full-scale demonstration was carried out in the Green Ridge section of Scranton, PA, between 1972 and 1974. This project proved the feasibility of using the new hydraulic-injection technique to back- fill dry mine voids, as well as flooded voids, and it demonstrated that crushed anthracite refuse could be used as easily as sand in the process. Stabilization was pro- vided for about 202 300 m2 (50 acres) of Scranton, having a population of approximately 1000. Additional demonstration projects at Rock Springs, WY, between 1973 and 1975, resulted in the stabilization of about 364 200 m2 (90 acres). The work was necessary to preserve the physical and economic well- being of the city, because there have been numerous occurrences of subsidence during recent years. A demonstration project completed in 1976 in Rock Springs brought the total stabilized area in that city to 647 500 m2 (160 acres). At a cost of about $3,000,000, a population estimated at 7000 persons and property values exceeding $18,000,000 were protected. Presently. USBM is participating in subsidence- control projects involving backfilling in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and West Virginia. Eleven demonstration projects were in progress by USBM in 1977-eight in the Pennsylvania anthracite region and three in bituminous areas of West Virginia (one) and Illinois (two). The estimated total property value is over $100,500,000, and the total cost of the projects is expected to be nearly $20,000,000. The demonstration projects are designed to adapt the pumped-slurry technique to a variety of subsurface conditions, to increase efficiency, and to reduce costs.

Between 2010 and 2018, Houston added more than 1 Million residents; the third largest rate of growth in the nation. With growth, the region faces new challenges with water supply, capacity of its wastewater system, and regional drainage. While tunnel construction has been limited in Houston since the Clean Water Program of 1990s, it is about to see a resurgence to improve water supply reliability and to reduce flood risks and sanitary sewer overflows. This paper examines the challenges with “going deep” below the built urban environment and related to high ground water; stiff, fissured clays; flowing silts and sands; faults; hazardous materials; and abandoned well fields.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research, Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

Historically, mica usage has been low because of limited availability; as a by-product of many small processors, who have lacked motivation for extensive R & D. The discovery of a 30 million ton deposit of 85-90% pure phlogopite, when existing markets are only 300,000 tonnes annually, forced the search for large volume new markets. Increasing costs of energy, petrochemicals, plastics and glass fibers, and environmental constraints on asbestos usage, have led to new opportunities for mica as a reinforcing filler. Extensive research and developments; in beneficiating, processing and treating mica, has been necessary to satisfy these new markets.

Disruption in critical minerals supply chains has resulted in the evaluation of various types of mineral deposits for critical minerals potential. Much of the study on critical minerals focuses on occurrence and characterization, but little research has addressed what concentrations of critical minerals in a mineral deposit are required to make an exploration target into an operating mine. Understanding the cut-off grades of ore deposits being actively mined is one criterion to determine if concentrations in an exploration target are high enough. Cut-off grade is defined as the minimum amount of mineral contained in a ton of ore that is sent to the processing plant. Among many factors, cut-off grade depends upon the size and type of the deposit and mining operation, the processing technique, and market prices. This research does not aim to define cut-offs for determining if a mineral deposit is economic. Rather, it defines estimates of concentrations of critical minerals that could be considered good enough for further exploration. For example, ~2% total rare earth oxide (TREO) is the cut-off grade for Mt. Pass carbonatite, but 500 ppm TREO could be an exploration target for coals.

The 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments will have a large effect on the coal-fired segment of the electric utility industry. Since electric power generation constitutes by far the largest single use for coal, this legislation has the potential to greatly affect future patterns of coal utilization in the U.S.A. The inability to depend exclusively upon low sulfur coal as an exclusive mode of compliance with New Source Performance Standards may greatly lessen projected demands for low sulfur coal by eastern utility boilers. The requirements of the legislation is discussed with particular reference to the needs of the electric generating industry, along with the technologies available for complying with the Act.

Paper presents project results investigating current techniques for dragline wire rope removal and the development of less hazardous means of performing the task. The cannon is the most prevalent method used in American surface mines. A cannon test program was conducted that used 40-and 50-grain primer cord to establish force produced using a 56-pound projectile. Socketlwedges were separated to establish separation force data. Two alternative removal methods, pendulum ram and portable hydraulic pusher, were developed and tested. Both provide sufficient force to effect separations under normal conditions on draglines with up to 78- cubic yard buckets.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.

Since geologic anomalies are one of the governing factors of instability of underground openings, it is extremely important to know in advance the locations and extent of these anomalies such as faults and weak zones. At an underground coal mine in the Black Warrior Basin, core drilling was conducted to find a fault in an area where they were planning to locate longwall panels and possibly a shaft. Core logging did not provide sufficient information to delineate the exact location, strike, and dip of the fault. However, a high resolution reflection seismic study successfully solved this problem. This experience proved the seismic exploration technique could be used for premining coal exploration by reducing drilling costs and providing more accurate and detailed information about geologic anomalies.
