The mining industry is at a crossroad. To sustain our technically based society, demands for commodities are increasing, and exploration for these commodities is a must. The debate is between sustainable development and the status quo and begins with exploration, where it is determined if a mineralized area contains enough potential ore to be mined economically. Mineral deposits are relatively rare and depend upon certain natural geologic conditions to form and may not always occur in locations that are most suitable to society. Exploration can be compatible with environmental protection and social responsibility, but difficult challenges face the industry to develop a property that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible.

Local community acceptance is a key aspect of planning and managing mining projects, whether through sustainability assessment and reporting or corporate social responsibility programs. However, there has been very little research to understand the determinants of community acceptance. This paper seeks to identify key mine characteristics and demographic factors that influence individual acceptance of mining projects. Six demographic factors and 16 mine characteristics were selected based on literature review. Four of the six demographics factors were confirmed to be significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with people?s attitude of the importance of the mine characteristics. All sixteen mine characteristics are identified as important factors. The most important mining factors are Job opportunities, water shortage or pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Both the mining and control groups have same opinion of 12 mining characteristics and differ on four (infrastructure improvement, labor shortage for other businesses, noise pollution, and mine life). During design and management of mines, this data can be used as a reference. This result will facilitate better choice experiment (survey) design for discrete choice modeling. Such discrete choice models can provide a viable framework for data-driven community engagement and sustainable mine management.

Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

The Empire concentrator was built in four stages, with the latest stage accounting for 50% of the overall plant capacity. Over the past 5 years, the average throughput of the three grinding lines has decreased by 50 LTPH (15%) without significant changes in ore characteristics and despite the addition of secondary grinding capacity to supplement the existing pebble mills that are the constraint of the grinding circuit. This paper discusses the different areas under study that are aimed at optimizing grinding circuit utilization which includes improving system logic, pebble crushing operation and pebble mills operation.

The importance of metallurgical information in reaching appropriate decisions during the development of mining projects is demonstrated. A financial analysis is calculated using a simulation that includes random number generators. The results are compared to the results of a traditional sensitivity analysis. The traditional analysis is shown to have the potential to overestimate the value of mining projects. The type of statistical distribution selected for the random number generator affects the results significantly. The statistical method of analysis provides insight into the amount of metallurgical testing to be completed and verification of how representative the samples are.

Many of the world?s largest existing mines are considering substantial step changes in production volumes, compensating for declining ore grades while trying to address increases in world demand for resources. The natural configuration of coal deposits allows for many mine development openings along the strike to access the ore body and thus increase volume. Similarly, with iron ore the nature of the deposits means that additional capacity can easily be added by opening up new mesas and providing extensions to infrastructure. On the other hand most of the non-ferrous metaliferous deposits form vertically and additional extraction volume comes from increasing depth. Underground mining from the base of the strata allows for large extraction rates, but block or panel caving operations develop at rates dictated by the geophysics of the overlying strata and the need for massive tunnelling developments to establish sufficient extraction points for high volumes. For really big mine production capacity, open cast mining still allows the easiest development of more massive mining techniques. But there remains the question of whether there are limits to how large an open cut mine can become in terms of throughput?

The thermal field of a frozen rockmass surrounding an airway is often disturbed due to thermal interaction with mine ventilation air. Outside air entering an underground mine changes the parameters of the physical state of the surrounding medium. The variations in air temperature result in stress redistributions around a tunnel or mine working. This paper examines the influence of fluctuations in air temperature on stress distribution around an airway, and approaches are suggested to minimize the impact of temperature- stress on the stability of mine openings in far northern mines.

Mining is an industry of experimentation throughout human history. Recently, societies are giving a clear message about mining because many projects are being rejected around the world. These refusals are a generational reaction to the activity of mining. In practice, it generates the perception that mining is using the same methodology without attending to the gradual initiation of conflicts. This is in spite of the best engineering and technology of the time that are put in place at the presentation of those mining projects. Some of these rejected projects are geographically distant from each other, but the communities? rejection occurred during many cases under similar characteristics. This concern shows that the current model of mining projects needs to be replaced with a new one: A new Design, one within which the socio-environmental values of this millennium are inherent. This paper describes Mining Project 101 to help the industry to set the highest and cleanest standards for mining. It also presents its aspects to sustainability and nature, which provides the principles and procedures for designing, planning, and operating mining projects with sensitivity to nature. It offers methods of diagnostic, remediation, and extraction while at the same time preventing and preserving a physical, chemical, and biological equilibrium of nature. This emerging process will be a step up from having a mining industry unaccountable to the socio-environmental conflicts it perpetrates and will abandon the ?cosmetic? repair on the caducity of traditional models in today?s practice. The process of magnetic separation is based on the differences among magnetic susceptibilities of various mineral species. Performed either wet or dry, the separation has application in both the recovery and concentration of value minerals and in removing deleterious mineral constituents from a product stream. There are two major catagories to be considered when addressing magnetic separation of minerals. The first catagory refers to particle characterization and relative differences in magnetic susceptibility. The second catagory refers to design parameters and the magnetic field generated by the separator.

One of the most important problems facing the coal industry today is the disposal of refuse from the coal preparation plants in a safe, economical, and efficient manner while complying with all legal requirements. The most commonly used refuse disposal method has been landfill/impoundment. In this method, the coarser refuse fractions are disposed of by layering and compaction into a landfill. The fine coal slurry refuse fraction is impounded in a dam constructed of a portion or all of the coarser refuse fractions. The failure of an impoundment at Buffalo Creek, Saunders, West Virginia and the sliding failure of a coarse refuse pile at Aberfan, Wales, England, resulted in an evaluation of refuse disposal methods by various regulatory agencies as well as coal producers. The result of this evaluation was the promulgation of Federal regulations dealing with the preparation, operation, and final abandonment of coal refuse disposal areas. As a consequence of these regulations the use of the landfill/impoundment method of disposal became in some cases economically unfeasible or technically impossible. Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. The human element in large measure dictates success in contracting relationships. Because of our professional backgrounds, we view contracts primarily as either engineers, contractors or owners. A beneficial contractual environment--one in which decisions, risks and benefits are shared--demands equal consideration of all three points of view. Most of the older cities in the United States, for example, suffer from bad contracts--generalized, patched-together documents that represent an accumulation of modifications originally written to compensate for specific situations that have occurred over the years. Because such documents lack coherence, they often present conflicting instructions which lead to defensive, ultimately destructive attitudes among the parties involved in the day-to-day administration of the project. Good contract development begins with a strong central philosophy to which the details of the contract can be related. First, the owner should establish a comprehensive philosophy in which risks between the parties are identified. Following this, a specific contract document can be written to satisfy this established philosophy. The contrast between two opposed contractual situations, NYC Water Tunnel Number Three and the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant Cooling Water Tunnels, illustrates how comprehensive, well-written contracts--contracts which share both risks and benefits--provide the basis for achieving quality construction that will reward engineer, contractor and owner.

Blind shaft drilling equipment has not changed substantially since the 1970s. Since it resides in a niche market between conventional shaft sinking and raise boring, the relatively small demand has resulted in some stagnation of development. In the 1990s the technology found a larger foothold in foundation and deep piling work for civil construction. WIRTH GmbH from Erkelenz, Germany has been servicing this market for many years with pile top drilling rigs and tools. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. recently entered into an agreement with WIRTH to develop a new generation of large diameter blind drilling equipment more specifically aimed at mining needs. The, recently completed, DHI-240 is the first rig to apply the most recent technology. This machine made its commercial debut in the fall of 2008. The Murray Mine was one of the first mechanized cut-and-fill underground gold operations in northern Nevada. At the end of 2002, mine production began to decline. So the mine entered a phase of remnant mining and began preparations to close down. The remaining mining took place along the ore waste boundary in previously condemned areas and in challenging ground conditions. To remain economically viable, new techniques were implemented in operations, geology, engineering and rock mechanics. These improvements pushed the edge of known and accepted mining practices and have allowed the Murray Mine to remain in operation.

This paper first discusses the physicochemical cleaning methods used to process fines followed by an analysis of the subprocesses of froth flotation and the adverse effects of slimes and particle oxidation. These subprocesses include the phenomena of interception, contact, adhesion and levitation. Preventive and corrective measures to combat the generation of fines and their effects are suggested. Preventive measures include controlled grinding, limited liberation, flotation at coarser sizes. Means of preventing oxidation and/or removing oxidation products are a1 so discussed. Corrective measure to increase recovery include intensive aeration, aggregation of particles, intensive mixing, increased retention time, and reduction of detachment. Measures leading to improves selectivity involve means to reduce slime coating, achieve selective mineralization of bubbles and minimize entrapment.

During the 1920&apos;s, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940&apos;s and early 1950&apos;s, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past twenty-five (25) years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated by the Glen-Gery Corporation which is located in eastern Pennsylvania; the National Lime and Stone Company which is located at Carey Ohio; and Holston Defense Corporation which is located at Kingsport, Tennessee. There are, however, numerous operating gasifiers in other parts of the world. Recent events indicate that this situation is changing. The quantity of domestic natural gas available to the interstate market has been declining at the same time that demand for all forms of energy has been increasing. The current potential market for gas with a heating value ranging from 100 to 500 Btu per cubic feet has been estimated at sixteen (16) quads (16 x 1015 Btu) per year. This is expected to grow to twenty (20) quads by the year 2000.

Clean Diesels fuel-borne catalyst, Platinum Plus, helps improve fuel economy for all engines up to 10 percent while reducing particulate emissions by up to 25 percent. When used with a simple diesel oxidation catalyst, particulate emissions can be reduced by 30 to 50 percent. The use of Platinum Plus enhances combustion in the cylinder, burning fuel more completely. This reduces CO2 and other greenhouse gases and lowers total operating costs by improving fuel economy.

The response of 174 domestic water supplies to longwall mining of the Pittsburgh coal seam was compared to various physical parameters. Sixty-four percent of domestic water supplies returned to service without the need for intervention, while thirty six percent required intervention to reestablish a suitable water supply. Domestic well response is strongly correlated with the topographic setting. Valley wells showed the least effect while hilltop wells showed the greatest effect. Well response was also found to be correlated to the location of the well above the mining with greater effects observed in zones of surface tension and compression, and fewer effects in zones which are stress neutral. Ground water supplies remained unaffected or were re¬established at 149 of 150 sites, indicating that ground water resources remain available to domestic wells after mining. Results of this study support the stress-relief model of ground water flow in the Northern Appalachian Basin. Longwall mining&apos;s effect on this system is to locally increase fracture connectivity in the near surface zone. This may shift the zones of saturated fractures to greater depths beneath hilltops and hillsides, and increase recharge and storage in valleys. General trends in well response are predict¬able utilizing the stress relief conceptual model, the topographic setting of the water sources, and their location over the mine.

Recent NIOSH published information has shown an increase of rapidly progressive coal workers? pneumoconiosis (CWP) in the southern Appalachian coal region (SAR) of the U.S., despite the fact that compliance data indicates that most coal miners have been exposed to coal mine dust concentrations below the statutory limit of 2 mg/m³. While the exact cause of these elevated CWP levels in the SAR has not been established, several factors may be contributing to the increase in occupational lung disease among coal miners. The mining of high rank coal is known to lead to higher CWP rates, and this type of coal is mined in a portion of this region. Also, a high percentage of the mines in the region are on reduced dust standards because of the high silica content of the airborne dust resulting in miners possibly being exposed to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust. Exposure to excessive amounts of respirable silica dust can lead to silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. NIOSH?s Respiratory Hazards Control Branch has been investigating the possible causes that would account for the observed higher trends in disease progression through literature review, data analysis and in-mine surveying. The investigation to date has revealed that underground mines are faced with cutting large amounts of rock in order to maintain haulage clearances. Cutting rock not only increases the potential for silica exposure, it increases the requirement for machine maintenance, which was a concern observed during dust surveys conducted by NIOSH. Over half of the mines operating in the SAR are on reduced standards due to high silica content. Adequate face ventilation of the continuous miner and roof bolter and limited down-wind operations from the miner are also issues of concern and items that require the constant attention of miners operating in these conditions.
