By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched.

The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. and an exasperated voice on the other end says, “There’s been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men!” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There’s something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we’re trying to figure out what’s wrong!” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings and an excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down both the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks!” As if this isn’t enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again and a stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Company No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine!” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, however, if this could happen, what on earth do you do? Although we all like to think that “It can’t happen to me,” we all must admit that mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. Your response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This paper will examine the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical “disaster” and then present a systematic crisis management response. While each situation is different, there are general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion widens the existing I-64 four-lane bridge-tunnel corridor to eight lanes through construction of two parallel tunnels, interstate widening, and bridge expansions. The design-build contract was awarded to Hampton Roads Connector Partners with HDR and Mott MacDonald retained as lead designers in a Design Joint Venture. This paper will highlight some of the e challenges related to the design of the twin bored tunnels from spaceproong, tunnel enabling wors, segmental lining design and durability considerations.

Tracer gases have been utilized successfully in a variety of industries, each with specific releasing and sampling methods. The various attributes of tracer gases are dependent on the industry the tracers are utilized in. Tracers must be chemically and thermally stable, safe, odorless, detectable at low concentrations, have a low background concentration, and should not be naturally occurring in the environment if they are utilized in underground mining applications (Thimons et al., 1974). In addition, the tracer gas should be inexpensive, non-corrosive, non-toxic, easily transportable, readily attainable, and non-radioactive (Kennedy et al., 1987). Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) met many of these above requirements and therefore was introduced as an ideal tracer gas to use in mining industry in the early 1970?s (Thimons et al., 1974). Due to the nature of underground mining including complicated geometry, irregular flows, turbulent flows, obstructed airways, and leakages it is difficult to use conventional anemometer and smoke tube techniques to accurately measure the effectiveness of ventilation controls (Thimons et al., 1974; Klinowski and Kennedy, 1991). There have been several applications of SF6 as a tracer gas in underground metal/non-metal and coal mines. Thimons et al. conducted early testing of SF6 in an underground limestone mine and determined that it is an effective technique for evaluating auxiliary fans, estimating volumetric flow rates in large areas, and measuring low flow velocities. A rapid face ventilation measurement method (FVM) utilizing SF6 was developed by the Bureau of Mines to make face measurements in underground coal mines (Timko and Thimons, 1982). When measuring the effectiveness of jet fans in dead headings SF6 was proven more effective than smoke tubes (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Experiments related to determining methane liberation in the gob were also conducted by injecting SF6 into a borehole (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Also, in an emergency situation where the gob had to be sealed due to a fire, SF6 was released to determine the effectiveness of the seals (Timko and Thimons, 1982).

For the last 15 years environmental Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA) have increasingly been used to evaluate the environmental performance of industrial processes and products and have been employed as a basis in decision making processes in the public and industrial sector. However, assessment methodologies for environmental protection measures and reclamation/remediation measures with respect to their consumption of natural resources are generally poorly developed. In this presentation a methodology for LCA of environmental protection measures and remedial actions, respectively is suggested, using the remediation/reclamation of mining sites as an example. Key aspect of this approach is the development of an evaluation method appropriate for environmental protection measures, which links the various impact indicators recognised in the impact assessments and allows their integrated assessment.

"The froth flotation process was patented by E.L. Sulman, H.F.K. Pickard, and John Ballot in 1906 . . . . . . . . . .James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U.S., about August 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Montana . . . . . . . . . .By 1914, 42 mining companies were operating or experimenting with the flotation process . . . . . . . . . .The period 1930 to 1960 saw the application of flotation spread to nonsulphide ores and become the key factor in the economic production of many industrial minerals". So states FROTH FLOTATION, 50th Anniversary Volume, published by AIME in 1962. It is interesting, to observe that the Mines Branch, now part of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, was established in 1907 through an act of Parliament entitled, "The Nines and Geology Act". In 1911, a mineral dressing group was formed and a laboratory was constructed. By 1921, an engineer was devoting full time to industrial mineral processing problems.

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

Enterprise unmanned traffic management (E-UTM) is a holistic system concept evolving from technological developments in radio frequency (RF), where dynamic tracking can be added into current and emerging platforms. This is done through inexpensive RF sensors capable of real-time and cooperative, non-GPS tracking enabling digital visualization of assets, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS). The RF sensors are low in size, weight and power (SWaP), creating efficiencies in energy and material consumption while transmitting positions in real time and at long ranges. Multiple UAS and other unmanned vehicles can be visualized for risk mitigation in operations, thus enabling mine management to have better decision-making capabilities in the current and future mosaic of mine operations.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for about 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In some recent years, the number of ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, last year?s Crandall Canyon twin mine disasters, in which 9 miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990?s these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents in the past 5 years. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery. Safer mining technologies have reduced the number of fatal incidents, but some recent failures have underlined the need for careful management of the retreat mining process. On the other hand, more than 400 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports, and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities. Available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting, and inside control roof bolters could dramatically reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety. Chemical mining may be defined as the in-place extraction of metal values from ores located within the confines of a mine (that is, broken or fractured ore, stope fill, caved material, or ores in permeable zones) or ores located in dumps, prepared ore heaps, or tailing ponds. The term solution mining has, in general, been used to mean the in-place dissolution of water-soluble mineral salts with leach solutions. Chemical mining is presently in its embryonic stage. Basic research needs to be done to understand the influence of physical and chemical factors in chemical mining, and applied research needs to be done on both a small and a large scale to develop practical techniques of field practice. The areas of research include the following: (1) Leaching chemistry, the influence of physical, chemical, and biological factors in in-place leaching (2) Hydrodynamics of chemical mining systems (3) The development of new, as well as old, leaching agents for use under chemical mining leach conditions (4) The development of new means of contacting fine and coarse materials (with solutions) under static leach conditions (5) The development of new processes for generating and regenerating chemical mining leach solutions (6) The development of metal recovery processes

The never ending search for lower unit costs led Pima Mining Company's management to study various alternatives shortly after Expansion III was completed. It soon became apparent that a considerable amount of ore assaying 0.35% copper had to be moved in order to maintain mill feed at the desired 0.54% copper content, which is the overall grade of the ore reserves. Detailed investigations revealed that for a period of 8 - 10 years, about 14,000 tons per day of 0.30 - 0.40% copper ore would pass by the crusher en-route to the low grade stockpile. This ore is very hard, very clean and has to be mined at a relatively uniform rate. A six month pilot plant run testing autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding gave very encouraging results. Since no mining costs need to be charged to the extra tonnage (it had to be mined anyway) the only major costs would be against milling. The decision to proceed was made in August 1970 and Fluor-Utah was retained as the prime design construction contractor. Ore was first put through the new mill on December 29, 1971. By March of 1972 design tonnage of 14,000 TPD had been attained. The first three expansions at Pima Mining Company, 20 miles south of Tucson, increased mill capacity from 3,000 TPD to 36,000 TPD. These expansions included a separate, conventional, three stage crushing plant plus additions to the existing concentrator that primarily duplicated the then current flowsheet. Expansion IV, however, consisted of an entirely new and separate primary crusher and a completely new mill building located about 2,000 feet southeast of the 01 d concentrator. The new mill, using semi-autogenous grinding, produces scavenger and rougher flotation concentrates that are pumped to the old mill for regrinding, cleaning, thickening and filtration.

Total suspended solids (TSS), generally referred to simply as sediment, is one of the four major parameters of water pollution associated with surface mining activities. The other three para¬meters are iron, manganese and pH. Currently the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the process of developing and implement¬ing effluent limitations for these pollutants pursuant to section 301 of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, 33 USC 1811.1 To date, effluent guidelines for existing point sources have been published, and guidelines for new sources are forthcoming. The effluent limits which have already been developed for TSS have been subjected to some controversy.1 Some industry spokesmen have indicated that they may be unable to meet these effluent limitation guidelines for TSS. The industry claims that in certain areas the suggested limit is unattainable since high suspended solid loads already exist in streams due to numerous and various sources of nonpoint pollution which include agriculture, silviculture and urban construction for which no TSS effluent limits have been set. An opposite viewpoint asserts that the TSS limitations are too lenient since permit data from the Regions (U.S. EPA Regions) indicates present compliance for several companies under more stringent TSS limits. The experience at the Centralia mine in Washington is one example.2

An assessment of U.S. western hard-rock miners? noise exposures was conducted as part of a multi-year National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) survey of noise exposures in each sector of the mining industry. Noise from selected mining equipment and operator noise exposures were measured, analyzed, and tabulated for dissemination to the participating sites and are being used to direct NIOSH research and interventions to address the greatest noise hazards. Eighty-two noise dosimeter measurements were obtained, along with time-motion studies as the miners operated hard-rock mining machines. Ninety-six percent of the operators had daily noise doses that exceeded the Mine Safety and Health Administration?s permissible exposure level. The average gold miner dosages while operating the following equipment were: haul trucks - 261%, load-haul-dumps (LHDs) - 235%, single boom drills - 221%, bolters - 214%, and dual boom drills - 163%. The worst exposure level was a silver miner with a daily dose of 873%. Time-motion data showed that this miner?s exposure accumulated most rapidly while operating a jack-leg drill. These results will be used to help prioritize noise control development by NIOSH and other partners. Water & Earth Technologies, Inc. (WET), Habitat Management, Inc. (HMI) and Chevron Mining, Inc. (CMI) together developed a solution for reclaiming steep southwest facing slopes in mining Area 12C that have historically been prone to excessive erosion, low vegetation establishment and continuing maintenance. Area 12C is located in the east wing of the Chevron McKinley Coal Mine, 27 miles northwest of Gallup, New Mexico, on Navajo Nation land administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Mining in this area was completed in May of 2007. Challenges encountered for this reclamation project included the need to reclaim graded material on a slope of 18-35% with southwest facing aspect, the presence of undisturbed rock outcropping that needed to be avoided during reclamation, the operational need to limit bulldozer pushes and the inability to import or export additional materials for construction. Two different reclamation alternatives were considered for Area 12C. The first alternative would use a traditional reclamation approach including three levels of draining terraces designed to convey water on a 3% slope to a single riprapped down drain. Terracing and down drains have been used to reclaim areas with similar terrain conditions elsewhere at the McKinely Mine and have failed to adequately control erosion (Williamson 2006). Terrace overtopping and down drain blowouts have been issues in maintenance and functionality for the mine. Maintenance routines consist of cleaning out terraces where they have filled in with sediment and repairing damaged or blown out terraces and down drains.

There was a time when heavy-duty apron feeders were built to last almost forever. The machines were heavy and built to maintain certain expected longevity and reliability. Increasing emphasis on return on capital leads to cost-effective designs. Costs can be increased or decreased, depending on customer specifications and the design philosophy of the feeder manufacturer. Specifiers can make important contributions to cost effectiveness. To do so, this article describes what should be known about planning with a supplier for heavy-duty apron feeders. There are several factors that should be considered, including capacity, characteristics of material carried, length, method of feeder loading, degree of lift, hopper opening, pan construction, and type of drive. Today's apron feeders are built in various sizes and with a variety of components to handle heavy, lumpy, or abrasive materials that can ruin lighter feeders. Careful feeder selection is important if it is to provide a controlled feed rate, absorb huge impacts, be used with long hopper openings, and have a relatively low power-perton capacity. Variations in systems and materials demand that each feeder be designed for its application, drawing on a wide range of components. Therefore, certain factors must be considered before final specifications are drawn. Capacity The design and application of an apron feeder is based on how material passes through a given system over the feeder into processing machinery. The processing machinery's capacity governs other equipment and productivity of the flow. From this basic information, related sizes of upstream equipment can be determined. Of these, the apron feeder acts as the "mouth and neck of the bottle." No more will pass than the mouth and neck will accommodate. Everything in the apron feeder design, from dimensions to power, is based on processing machinery. Material Considerations Are Vital Just as the nature of materials to be crushed or screened affects capacity and productivity of a crusher or a grinding mill, so does it affect capacity and performance of a feeder. Lump size must be identified closely so the pan width can be selected to accommodate the maximum lump with room to spare. The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.

The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research has been developing models of wireless signal propagation in underground coal mines since 2007. The current mine propagation modeling software, named COMMS, is able to locate potential broadcast points for underground wireless mesh systems and estimate their coverage. COMMS utilizes programmed routines to calculate necessary values to both quantitatively and qualitatively solve and analyze predicted coverage areas. The program approximates the spatial relationships that are encountered, such as ventilation regulators, belts and other obstructions. Using this model for propagation allows the optimal communications node locations to be calculated, by using lessons learned from current installations and experience with the new technology. In addition, the optimization can be calculated by checking all possible combinations of broadcast locations. This paper compares these optimization calculation methods. The ability to solve a mine?s communication network provides a pre-installation mine network design map, creates coverage maps of the mine and allows planning for future communication activities

How does SME-AIME cope with profound changes in technology, markets - and most importantly - in employment patterns facing its membership today? This is the question that prompted the Society's Board of Directors to appoint a Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) (see ME, Feb. 1984, pp. 118 and 128). This is also the question addressed most particularly by the LRPC's Scope Committee. The Committee started its deliberations by asking such basic questions as "Who are we?" and "What is our business?" The Scope Committee then reviewed the findings and recommendations of other more specialized committees to develop and integrate their concepts of the Society's business for the next 10 years. The policy-making suggestions of the LRPC were reviewed and acted upon by the Board of Directors at its open meeting in Los Angeles on Feb. 26, 1984. At the Oct. 23-26, 1984 SME Fall Meeting in Denver, the Board will again review LRPC recommendations. In answer to the question "Who are we?" the Scope Committee proposed description, which was accepted by vote of the board of directors: . . A technical and professional organization that consists of individual members, namely those mining engineers, metallurgists, geologists, earth scientists, economists, managers, educators, and other professionals concerned with all facets of exploration, production, distribution, and using of mineral commodities. "These mineral commodities include all metals; industrial minerals, including construction materials and fertilizers; coal, oil shales, tar sands, and other mined fuels. Among the earth's mineral resources, only wellpumped oil and gas lie outside the Society's specific purview. "Traditionally, SME members work in the fields of engineering, technology, exploration and discovery, development, construction, mining, quarrying, beneficiation and processing, handling and transport, equipment manufacturing, sales and marketing, data processing, safety, land reclamation, environmental protection, taxation, administration, and management of these elements. "Members practice their professions in industry, in universities and research institutions, and in government. They may be operators, manufacturers, sales persons, contractors, consultants, analysts, researchers, educators, advisors, regulators, or members of supporting staffs. "The members of the Society are leaders in dedication to their crafts, in innovation, and in the pursuit of excellence. Among their numbers they count the most distinguished of engineers, applied scientists, and managers. "The Society is based in the United States, is active on a worldwide basis, and is open to nationals of any country. Certain qualifications must be met for attaining and maintaining membership." Purpose of the Society As to the question "What is our business?" the Scope Committee restated our purpose in light of current practice and the constitution of AIME and the bylaws of AIME and SME. The Board of Directors accepted the following proposed purpose of SME: "To further the professional development and well-being of its members by publishing and distributing technical writings, news, and information; by sponsoring meetings of members; by providing forums for discussions and for continuing education; and by fostering communication on the subjects within its purview. Low-grade manganese ores with low Mn/Fe ratios can he enriched through selective carbon reduction of iron oxide to magnetite followed by magnetic separation o f the magnetite. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to assess the preferential isothermal reduction of pure M1702 and Fe2O3 using solid carbon. This was followed by reduction of a synthetic analogue of composition comparable to an actual low-grade ore (i.e., Sandur manganese ore, Sandur, India). The carbothermic reduction of the manganese ore converts the hematite and goethite minerals to magnetite (Fe3O4), with the magnetite then going into the magnetic, fraction. The resultant nonmagnetic ,fraction becomes depleted of iron with an enhanced manganese content. These results show that it is possible to reduce the iron from 22% to 5.85%, thus increasing the Mn/Fe ratio from 1.52 to 6.2 with a manganese recovery of about 50%. The recovery was, further improved by grinding the magnetic fraction to -75 µm.

"A walk through the exhibit hall or a glance at the technical programing that was offered at the 2019 SME Annual Conference & Expo and CMA 121st National Western Mining Conference in Denver, CO, Feb. 24-27 makes it evident that the mining industry is an innovative one that is on the cutting edge of technology. However, a glance at the nearly 6,700 attendees of the conference and it is also evident that while the industry is moving forward at a rapid pace in some areas, it is lagging behind in terms of diversity, both in gender and ethnicity.At Monday morning’s keynote session, Hannah Ubi, a millennial and a public speaker who joked that she is the proud owner of a sixth-place swimming trophy and a number of participation medals, addressed a full house that consisted of many men with gray hair or balding heads. The issue of an aging workforce that is rapidly being depleted by retirements is not a new one for the mining industry. In fact, it has been a concern for the industry for more than a decade. The central question has long been, “when the current senior-level people begin to retire, how do we replace them, and how do we fill the knowledge gap that is walking off into the sunset?” SME has been on the front lines in searching for solutions to the impending problem and, along with industry partners, has worked hard to develop programs that will address these issues. Among other efforts, the Society has developed a Ph.D. fellowship program to encourage people to remain in academia to teach the next generation and to help train the next generation to take over in the private sector.“The SME Foundation’s Ph.D. and Career Development Grant program is exceeding expectations at this point with two Ph.D. students graduating and taking a position in academia and two professors achieving tenure,” SME Executive Director Dave Kanagy said during the conference.The Society’s Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) has done its part to help educate future generations about the mining industry with initiatives like EngineerGirl, the Boy Scout Merit Badge and Move Mining, the Shark-Tank-style competition that was held on Monday with five finalists competing for the top prize (ME, April 2019, page 53)."
