New developments in the pipe conveyor and belt are advanced to address the growth in the capacity, length and complexity of pipe conveyor systems. Improved belt construction can offer better stability during horizontal curves and resistance to twist. Low rolling resistance rubber compound can significantly lower the power consumption and belt tension, producing capital and operation cost savings. Dynamic analysis, when used to analyze the conveyor?s starting and stopping behavior, can improve the design and reliability of long overland pipe conveyor systems. For these three aspects, technical backgrounds and field installations as examples are discussed in this paper.

The molecular structure of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups in nonionic surfactants has been related to the wetting and dispersion of selected pigments. The nonionic surfactants included in this study are acetylenic diol based surfactants and ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The Langmuir model could be used to fit adsorption data. Further analysis of the data showed that the free energy of adsorption was a function of adsorption density of the surfactants at the interface. The change in free energy with adsorption density could be interpreted by considering a change in the orientation of the adsorbed molecules. Acetylenic diol based surfatants were found to have an area per molecule of 2-3 times that of similarly ethoxylated alkyl phenols. The wetting and dispersion properties of lamp black, a model hydrophobic surface, by these surfactants were investigated by contact angle measurements and particle size analysis. Acetylenic diol based surfactants with ethylene oxide contents between3.5 and 10 moles per molecule and alkyl phenol based surfactants with approximately 9 moles of ethylene oxide per molecule were found to provide superior wetting abilities. Longer ethylene oxide chains were required for superior dispersion capabilities within each family of surfactants. Complete wetting and dispersion was found to occur above the critical micelle concentration of the surfactants.

Gold ores containing high levels of cyanide-leachable copper minerals, such as covellite, chalcocite, bornite, malachite, azurite, and cuprite have traditionally been difficult to treat economically. A novel hydrometallurgical process for efficient treatment of cyanidation effluents obtained by leaching high copper gold ores (or concentrates) based on the use of Cherokee Chemical organo-sulfur reagents (OSR-A, OSR-B and OSR-C) is described. The process may be modified to selectively precipitate silver, or completely recover silver, copper and zinc, as well as regenerate significant amounts of cyanide. For example, data obtained demonstrate that 100 % of silver and zinc, and 98 % of copper were removed from the solution, while 80 % of cyanide was recovered. The treated barren solutions exhibit enhanced gold and silver leaching kinetics compared to the untreated controls.

The Chino mine, concentrator, and smelter are located in Grant County in Southwestern New Mexico. Chino Mines Company is a partnership two-thirds owned and operated by Kennecott Santa Fe Corp., and one-third owned by MC Minerals Corp. (Mitsubishi) of Japan. The Chino Ore Body The Chino ore body is a widely varied deposit of rock types and contains intrusive stocks and sediments. The stocks contain chalcocite in a matrix of quartz, mica, and feldspar. Much of the feldspar is altered to clay. Some of these stocks are enriched with native copper. The sediments contain chalcopyrite associated with gangue minerals including magnetite, pyrite, garnet chlorite, and epidote. The contact of the stock and sediment is heavily altered to chlorite and clay. The stock ores contain economic quantities of molybdenite. The operating work index of Chino ore varies from 5 to 20 kwh/ton and averages 8.5 kwh/ton. The ore head to the concentrator averaged 0.81% copper and 0.010% molybdenum. Fifteen percent of the total copper head exists as nonsulfide mineralization.

The 17th Annual Mining Hall of Fame Induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Georgius Agricola, David William Brunton, Herbert E. Goodman, David Ray Mitchell and Robert Peele. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555) wrote De ReMetallica, an original and valuable work that discussed everything known about mining during the first half of the 16th century. In De Re Metallica, Agricola reviewed practical means of finding ores, methods of surveying and mining, the assaying of ores, types and uses of mining machinery, smelting, mine administration and more. Naturally occurring asbestos in aggregate and other mineral deposits, and the release of asbestos fibers into the ambient environment, is a public health concern. Determining the presence of asbestos in an ore body also presents a considerable sampling and analytical challenge. Improper and inaccurate identification of asbestos can result in unwarranted public and worker panic leading to significant costs to mine operators both in terms of dollars and company image. Some companies have been forced out of business simply because they had the non-asbestiform, prismatic variety of one of the six asbestos minerals. In the late 70’s, asbestos was found as a contaminate in a trap rock quarry in Rockville, Maryland. This discovery led to a massive overreaction by federal, state and local governments. In 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) promulgated a final rule that regulated the common non-asbestiform mineral habits of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite as if they were asbestos. The rule was reversed after a six-year struggle. Recently, the Libby, Montana, W. R. Grace vermiculite - asbestos, as well as the California chrysotile in serpentinite, and the New Jersey Southdown quarry – asbestos events have rekindled the entire issue of naturally occurring asbestos. It is time to get this concern addressed with sound science so that real asbestos is properly identified and controlled.

INTRODUCTION, The transalpine rail routes in Switzerland are well over one hundred years old. As the established routes no longer meet the demands of the continually increasing volumes of rail traffic between north and south, two new routes through the Alps were planed. The old Gotthard rail line is in fact a mountain railway. The northern and the southern access ramps?with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum slope of 2.2%?reach the old Gotthard rail tunnel at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m above sea level. This is approximately 900 m higher than the city of Milan. In 1992, the Swiss electorate people voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of the project to build the new base routes through the Alps. The Swiss voted again in 1998 in favor of the financing proposal for the new infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways together with the BLS Lötschbergbahn were commissioned for the realization and management of the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., founded by Swiss Federal Railways, was given the task of managing the design and realization of the Gotthard route until the start of regular service. Proper illumination is critical to a miner?s ability to detect hazards in underground mines. Moving hazards are often located in the miner?s peripheral field-of-view, while slip/trip/fall hazards are often located in the forward field-of-view. The objective of the research described in this paper was to determine if light-emitting diodes (LEDs) improve visual performance as compared to traditional incandescent (INC) cap lamps. The research presented focuses on comparative studies of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) prototype LED, a commercial LED, and an INC camp lamp. Thirty subjects participated in these studies; ten subjects in each of the age groups: 18 to 25 years, 40 to 50 years, and 51+ years. Visual performance was quantified by the subjects? speed and accuracy in detecting hazards, while visual performance for disability glare was quantified by the use of contrast sensitivity tests. Results suggest that LEDs with a visible spectrum containing a higher concentration of the shorter wavelengths can enable visual performance improvements with respect to disability glare, the detection of moving hazards in the peripheral field-of-view, and the detection of floor hazards in the forward field-of-view. The NIOSH prototype LED cap lamp provided the best visual performance improvements for the older age groups in every test. In 1986 the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) embarked on a major research effort to develop technology that can substantially reduce worker exposure to face hazards simply by relocating the equipment operators to an area of relative safety. This reduced exposure mining system (REMS) research effort enhances the USBM ongoing health and safety research efforts to reduce and control dust and noise and to reduce accidents through training and better mining practices. This paper reports progress of the research that is developing and will demonstrate the technologies required for the computer-assisted tele-remote operation of continuous mining machines, haulage systems, and roof bolting machines.

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

Between 2002 and 2004, the performance of a six million ton per year iron ore beneficiation plant dropped significantly. In a classic case of “who done it,” was it the mine, the concentrator, an ore change, or something else? While average annual final product grade decreased 8% (indicated by an increase in silicate gangue from 2.76% to 2.99%), the weight recovery also decreased by 8% (from 37.92% to 34.79%). This represents a loss of 832,000 tons of iron ore worth about $16 million for the two year period! The concentrator had been optimized to produce a high grade wet concentrate as feed to the dry side of the plant. But, did optimizing an individual unit operation’s grade give the best overall plant performance? In this paper, the investigation and solution to this mystery will be revealed.

Six potential locations along the west shore of Lake Mead were evaluated to site anew water intake pumping station for the SNWA. The evaluations were based upon geotechnical exploration results and conceptual intake pumping station designs. The exploration included geologic mapping, geophysical testing, underwater ROV inspections and borings. Ground surface and underground chamber pumping station designs were considered. Sites at Saddle Island, Black Canyon and Hoover Dam are geotechnically suitable. A Saddle Island site was selected because it has the most favorable conditions for the intake pumping station and the aqueduct to the Las Vegas valley.

Steven F. Leer, president and chief executive officer of Arch Coal Inc. will be the master of ceremonies for the 12th Annual National Mining Hall of Fame Induction Banquet. The black-tie (optional) affair will be held at the Adam’s Mark Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 10 in St. Louis, MO. Six legendary leaders will be inducted at the ceremony. They will join 145 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. R. Joe Wagner, vice president for exploration and chief geologist of The Doe Run Co., St. Louis, will be the evening’s keynote speaker. His father, Richard Edwin Wagner (1898-1979), was inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame in 1998 at the banquet in Phoenix, AZ.

Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. This paper by Mr Mclvor is yet another contribution to the eternal controversy surrounding the benefits, or otherwise, of high circulating loads in closed circuit grinding. Throughout the paper it is difficult to establish whether the author is referring to effects relating to the mill, classifier, or to the overall circuit. Table 1 is put forward as indicating the advantage of operating at high circulating loads. From the two (it would be interesting to see more) product sizing points provided in each case, the conclusions to be drawn are that cases one and two have very similar size analyses. The third case, however, indicates a much flatter curve, that is to say, higher fines production and a very wide spread of size ranges. If the objective of this circuit is to provide a closely sized product with minimum overground slimes to the downstream process, then it would appear to be the less "efficient" by far. No data is given for product pulp densities either. The term "efficiency" should never be used without a careful and clear definition. In this case, "efficiency" is used to express an apparent percentage reduction in operating work index (Bond) from the measured "standard" at 250% circulat¬ing load operation. The Bagdad mill, located near Bagdad, AZ, was built in 1977 with a designed mill capacity of 36.3 kt/d (40,000 stpd). An autogenous mill-ball mill crusher (ABC) grinding circuit was chosen. The original mill contained three independent grinding circuits. Each contained one 9.75m-diam x 4-m-long (32-ft-diam x 13-ft-long) fixed-speed autogenous mill, a4.7-m-diam x 6.7-m- long (15.5ft-diam x 22-ft-long) ball mill and one 2. 1-m-diam (7-ft-diam) short head cone crusher. Total installed power per grinding circuit was about 8.4 MW (11,350 hp), with 5.9 MW (8000 hp) in the autogenous mill, 2.2 MW (3000 hp) in the ball mill and 261 kW (350 hp) in the crusher (Fig. 1). The autogenous mills were designed to be able to operate semi-autogenously. However, they were never converted to semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills. As a result of this design, only about 4.1 MW (5450 hp) of the designed power is used in the autogenous mills. The grinding circuits are closed, with 2.4 x 6 m (8 x 20 ft) double-deck vibrating screens. A series of conveyors re- turn screen oversize underneath the mill coarse ore stockpile to feed the crushers. Variable speed belts feed the crushers and control power draw. Crusher product reports directly to the tail end of the autogenous mill feed belt (Fig. 2). A magnetic sensor detects tramp iron in the autogenous mill-crusher circuit.

Diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s (PRL) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback. Such information is necessary for the preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 kW to 300 kW depending upon the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2 m high and 2.9 m wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment; measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor; and recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors, and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fire dynamics simulator.

Lebanon used a TBM for the firsttime to excavate a tunnel in the country. A main beam TBM, built in 1979, bored the 3.8 m (12.5-ft) diameter by 4,020 m (2.5-miles) Madiq Tunnel. The TBM bored through karstic terrain of dolomitic limestone, limestone and marly-limestone rock having near horizontal beds with more than twelve faults crossing the axis of the tunnel. The TBM also encountered more than six major karst features, filled with various combinations of boulders, clay, void space and water. The excavation through these collapsed-breccia zones drastically slowed the TBM?s progress. When complete, which the Madiq Tunnel is a part, the Kesrouane Water Project along the coast will bring fresh and irrigation waters to the parched and heavily populated region north of Beirut. This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calculations where the compliance limit of lbs SO2/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equations to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs SO2/million Btu, the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess% = 0.5 - 0.6*13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C[<] 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300 and 600 °C is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies depending upon structural homogeneity, porosity and gangue quantity. Especially sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favours disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.
