It is common practice in the beneficiation of iron ore ultrafines to apply reverse flotation, and hence float the gangue minerals, leaving behind a high-grade iron ore product. Given the difficulty in floating particles finer than 20 μm, especially those finer than 10 μm, it is necessary to subject the feed to desliming ahead of flotation. There are two problems with this approach. Firstly, given the known inefficiencies of cyclones, desliming needs to be aggressively applied to particle sizes upwards of 45 μm to ensure all the offending ultrafine gangue is removed. Secondly, desliming also removes a significant portion of the valuable iron ore. Thus, a significant portion of the ultrafines, including the iron ore, is lost to the tailings. This paper examines the direct flotation of iron ore fines using the Reflux Flotation Cell. The RFC operates using a concentrated bubbly zone, in the absence of a conventional froth zone, for delivering strong counter current washing through an inverted fluidised bed of bubbles ahead of the product discharge. A system of parallel inclined channels in the lower part of the cell provides enhanced segregation of the bubbles from the tailings, preventing the loss of air bubbles into the tailings. Experiments conducted under semi-batch conditions produced encouraging results with concentrates of ~65% Fe grade in a single flotation stage. Comparatively, up to five successive batch flotation stages were required when using a laboratory scale batch mechanical flotation cell to achieve similar Fe grades. For a given grade, lower Fe recoveries were typically achieved by the RFC. This was attributed to the effective prevention of ultrafine particles succumbing to hydraulic entrainment under a positive bias flux, as well as an increasing feed volume involved in the semi-batch operation using inverted fluidisation water for cleaning. Overall, similar grade-recovery curves were produced, however, significantly higher grades were obtained by the RFC and with fewer separation stages. This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.

Tests were conducted during the middle of this year to evaluate techniques and the equipment used in a novel continuous mining system for use in narrow reef tabular orebodies. Equipment was designed and supplied to test a mechanized drilling rig, a selection of rock breaking techniques and an integrated rock removal system, mounted on a self-advancing reciprocating flight conveyer. As the rock breaking techniques do not depend on the use of large quantities of conventional explosive the systems and equipment employed here have the potential to run continuously for 24hours per day. Whilst the tests carried out use simple prototype equipment employing established technologies, the long-term objective remains the use of sophisticated machinery capable of running continuously and un-manned, only interrupted by brief service intervals. Iron ore fines are agglomerated in the sintering process to produce sinter: an important feed material for blast furnaces worldwide. A model of the iron ore sintering process has been developed with the objective of being representative of the sinter pot test, the standard laboratory process in which the behaviour of specific sinter feed mixtures is evaluated. The model aims to predict sinter quality, including chemical quality and physical strength, as well as key sinter process performance parameters such as production rate and fuel consumption rate. The model uses the finite difference method (FDM) to solve heat and mass distributions within the sinter pot over the sinter bed height and time dimensions. This method can further be used for establishing empirical relationships with measured sinter properties. Inputs into the model include the feed material physical properties, chemical compositions, and boundary conditions that vary over time. Sub-models describe relationships between applied pressure differential and gas flow rate through the bed of granulated fine ore particles, combustion of carbonaceous material, calcination of fluxes, evaporation and condensation of water, and melting and solidification. Four sinter pot tests were performed and the model predictions validated against temperatures measured at depths of 100, 230, and 420 mm. Differences between predicted and measured temperatures indicated the need for optimization of some model parameters that are uncertain. Optimization resulted in an improvement in the correlation between the predicted and measured temperatures for all tests, although an acceptable level of agreement was not achieved in all cases. Using these parameter values, reasonable agreement was found in terms of typical performance parameters for three out of the four tests.

Kleinkopje Colliery has five Wemco drums that were installed and commissioned in 1978. Over the years, there have been remarkable changes in mining and geological conditions at the colliery. First, an increase in the percentage of fines was recorded, which resulted in an uneven split or an imbalance in silo levels between material feeding the cyclone (-12 mm) and Wemco drum (+12 mm) sections respectively. This problem was solved by doing modifications around the banana screens to allow finer material to the drums. The imbalance challenge was then followed by spontaneous combustion that takes place in situ and results in low product yield. The results obtained from efficiency tests indicate that although there is a limit in the percentage of -6 mm material in the feed, Wemco drums are still very efficient and applicable to the current mining conditions. These results also suggest that it is essential to lower the throughput when the drums are treating low yielding coal.

The main purpose of the paper is to determine the contribution of fluctuations in barometric pressure to flammable gas explosions in South African mines. For this purpose, the barometric-pressure patterns preceding each of the 59 major explosions in South African gold and coal mines over the past 20 years were analysed. It is concluded that diurnal fluctuations in pressure do not have a major influence on the accumulation of gas in the underground workings, but that pressure drops associated with cyclonic weather systems moving across the country over a number of days are the major factor contributing to gas explosions in mines. To illustrate some of the points made in the paper, the Hlobane Colliery explosion of September 1983 is used as a case study. In the final section, several general conclusions are drawn and recommendations put forward as to how mines should recognize and react to meteorological phenomena that may lead to an increased probability of gas explosions in underground workings.

The Elizabeth Bay aeolian deposit in Namibia comprises a sedimentary package of diamondiferous grits that have been deposited, reworked and concentrated to various degrees by dominant southerly winds. Diamond concentration in these deposits is highly variable and often unpredictable. The deposit is marginal from an economic perspective and therefore requires selective mining which in turn requires correct sampling and accurate estimation. Three methods of sampling have been used at Elizabeth Bay for mineral resource estimation: (i) pit samples utilizing an excavator to produce a sample 1 to 3 metres deep with a 10 to 20 m2 footprint, (ii)GB50 grab sampling with a 3.34 m2 footprint and (iii) a BG36 bucket auger drill with a 5 m2 footprint. Pit sampling, being easy to execute, has been the most widely used despite a limited penetration ability and, at times, questionable integrity. The GB50 grab sampling tool was tested at Elizabeth Bay and although it had better penetration ability and sample integrity, it struggled with cemented horizons. No sample optimization was conducted prior to the GB50 grab sampling. The latest phase of sampling was conducted using a BG36 bucket auger drill which is capable of penetrating thick overburden, penetrate cemented horizons and provides an acceptable sample support size. Geostatistical simulation methods were applied to establish the optimum sampling parameters required to estimate a mineral resource at an indicated level of confidence. The results show that a 5 m2 sample support size is adequate and that a 50 m 100 m sample configuration is optimal. Sample data obtained from the three methods confirms that the BG36 bucket auger tool combined with the parameters identified in this exercise produce the best results for diamond resource estimation.

The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.

Sulfide-type tin deposits in Russia are characterised by the complex mineral composition of ores and dump products of their processing. Tin-sulfide ores contain industrial quantities of copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, silver, rare and trace elements (indium, scandium, etc.). In addition, the ores are characterised by uneven dissemination of sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, galena, arsenopyrite, etc.) and tin minerals (cassiterite, stannine, etc.). X-ray phase and spectral analysis, scanning electronic microscopy (SEAM), laser SIM and AFM microscopy helped to identify the selective fixing of sodium dibutyl dithiocarbamate (DBDTC) on chalcopyrite and galena, as well as the tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and IM-50 on cassiterite. For the first time, collectors and flocculants of slurry fractions of silver and tin, thermomorphic polymers TMPF were used to isolate more than 80% silver from the tin tailings of the Solnechny mine into a copper-silver rough concentrate. It has been established that preliminary ultrasonic treatment and desliming according to the 0.02 mm class removes up to 20% of sludge material, which impairs the process of gravity separation. The combined flotation-gravity scheme using new reagent compositions helped to obtain tin concentrate with a tin content of 5.42%, which meets the requirements for further metallurgical processing (at least 5%). "Historically, mining companies worldwide provided housing and developed towns to accommodate their employees. At the end of the 1980s this approach became less prevalent and attempts were made to mitigate the effects of mine development and mine closure on communities living near the mines. Permanent settlement in mining towns urgently needed to be minimized. Since the advent of democracy, South African policy has moved in the opposite direction, shifting the emphasis to creating integrated communities and encouraging home ownership. Despite this policy shift, however, mines continue to influence local housing conditions. One direct outcome has been the development of informal settlements. We surveyed 260 informal settlement households in Postmasburg, a small and remotely located town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. We found that because they employ contract workers and thus arouse expectations of employment, the mines here contribute extensively to the development of informal settlements. But local factors also contribute, and the functional role of informal settlements as a form of housing that supports mobility should not be underestimated. We also found that both municipal and mining company policies for informal settlements were inadequate. Finally, we found that low-income informal settlers not associated with mine employment suffered the highest levels of social disruption.IntroductionA mine generates demand for labour, which in turn generates demand for housing. When settlements spring up near a mine this often means poor housing conditions. In South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s mining companies invested heavily in company towns or mining settlements, but they have become increasingly hesitant to do so, for three reasons. First, declining resource prices in the mid-1980s and the 1990s compelled them to focus on core business interests and reduce the costs of peripheral activities such as housing (Bryceson and MacKinnon, 2013); second, at the turn of the 20th century they were often accused of taking over the role of local government (IIED, 2002) and consequently became hesitant to invest in developing mining towns; and third, changing labour regimes also curbed their investment in such towns (Haslam McKenzie, 2010). Increasingly, the companies began to endorse block-roster shifts, and outsourcing also became more common in the early 1990s. Block-roster shifts in Australia (together with improved technology) have meant that miners do not need to settle near the mines but can fly in and fly out and have their urban houses as their stable homes. This has had serious negative implications for housing in remote towns in Australia, particularly worker camps, large-scale renting out of available accommodation, and ‘hot-bedding’."

In this study, we review the role of mechanical activation in the pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical processing of titanium feedstock. Mechanical activation has been shown to decrease the activation energy of chemical reactions, thus enhancing process efficiency and product quality by reducing processing time and energy consumption. Pyrometallurgical processing is energy-intensive and time-consuming. Hydrometallurgy is costly, requires high-grade feed material, and generates toxic waste. Waste generation and process complexity are the major drawbacks of electrometallurgy and solvent extraction. Bioleaching via a mechanically activated pyrometallurgical process can be identified as an alternative method, but the lengthy processing time is the major disadvantage. Mechanically activated titanium concentrate can be used in a finely tuned combined metallurgical process to overcome the challenges and drawbacks in these technologies.

During the commissioning phase, which is usually the most exciting part of a project involving the design and construction of metallurgical plant, the commissioning engineers interact between the client and the project management. The client wants to see whether all the equipment that he has bought and that, in his opinion, has taken far too long to erect will actually work. Project management expects the commissioning people to con¬vince the client that this is the best design ever developed and that never before have time and money been spent so well. The commissioning team has to fulfil these expectations. Commissioning work is a `shirt sleeve' function, with little of the glamour that is normally associated with fields such as engineering and operations. The team usually works in a partially completed plant with more temporary than permanent services and little (if any) office accommodation, normal working hours do not apply, and the demands made on the team change suddenly and dramatically. This article outlines the activities of the commissioning group and the systems used to smooth the commissioning path.

Noise is a form of pollution arising mainly from the activities of man. One such activity is mining, in which man, as in many of his other activities, uses machinery of various kinds to achieve safe, healthy, and economic production. Trackless mining makes use of an advanced state of technology over that required In traditional mining methods. One of the advantages of the former, as distinct from any disadvantages it may have, is a reduction in noise levels, the number of people exposed to noise, and the duration of their exposure to noise. This paper briefly examines why noise is a problem and what various countries are doing about it in terms of standards, codes of practice, and regulations. It also investigates the extent to which noise is a problem in mining and how trackless mining alleviates this problem. The question is then posed as to whether South Africa is not setting too high a standard at this stage of its national development by comparison with what is being done by other, more-advanced countries.

Published South African fatality and injury statistics for mine accidents are investigated. Where possible, the South African statistics are compared with those of other countries. Commonly held attitudes to the South African accident experience are also examined. Analysis reveals that the published accident rates present a more favourable picture than the rates actually experienced by underground workers. In addition, fatality rates in South African underground gold and coal mines do not differ significantly and have remained stable over the past decade, although the injury rates have decreased rapidly. No evidence was found that this is due to improved safety, and a comparison with international fatality and injury data suggests that it is not. The underground fatality rate for South African coal mining is, on average, eight times that of the UK, four times that of all EEC coal mines taken together, and over double that of the USA. Despite the unreliability of the injury rates, much has been made in South Africa of their rapid decline, an emphasis that appears to be misplaced.

This paper reviews the major deposits of lower-grade chromite in the world, and a wide variety of methods used for the recovery of chromium from them. Gangue materials in more coarsely sized ores can be separated by gravity means, whereas flotation techniques are required for finer-grained materials. However, unless there is considerable Iron In the ores, physical means cannot increase the Cr/Fe ratios. Chemical techniques such as hydrometallurgical methods, chlorination, roasting and leaching, and smelting are required for this purpose. A greater understanding of the physical properties of chromites and the chemical reactions that take place in the recovery operations is required before. the recoveries from lower-grade chromites can be maximized. More efficient recovery operations can be realized If It can be shown definitively that the reduction of chromites occurs via either a gas-solld or solid-solid mechanism, for example. The effects of specific impurities on the chromite reduction reactions need to be better understood, as do reagent and pH control in the flotation of chromite.

The copper industry is cyclical with the price determined by market forces (i.e. the balance between supply and demand for the metal.) The period of each cycle typically varies between 6 to 9 years. These cycles drive decision making for exploration, new project and mine development, mine closures, process improvement, research and development, and technological innovation. The gold industry is fundamentally different from copper in that supply and demand do not, alone, determine metal price and many other factors play a key role, including global and regional financial conditions, political stability, and the global future economic outlook. However, the gold price experiences trends and longer term cycles that similarly drive business decision making. This paper examines developments in the copper industry that have occurred over the past few price cycles (approximately 20 years) and explores how the lessons learned can be applied to gold extraction. A number of specific examples and opportunities are discussed in detail, including; technology development and innovation, cost control and business improvement, material characterization, comminution equipment, biological heap leaching, and concentrate pressure leaching.
