In mining the method of statistical tests is used by solving of problems, exposing to influence of random factors. Such problems are: rational selection of equipment set; co-ordination in time of different processes; interaction between some processes and kinds of works. Usually it is considered that Monte Carlo method proves its value in the first place in that problems, which allow theoretical-probabilistic description. Analysis of numerical solution of mining-economic problems shows that the method of statistical tests may be used successfully by solving of determinate problems, which are solved usually analytically or by the methods of mathematical programming. We are talking about the problems of optimal use of resources, expedient placing of equipment, effective use of investments, rational planning of stripping and extracting works, groups of mining enterprises and about different variants of transport problem. In the report possibility of the method use is studied at an example of typical technical-economic problems solving. By solving of these problems the variant of the method with uniform distribution of random quantity had been applied and built-in random number generator of visual modelling system VisSim had been used. By algorithms elaboration it seems very perspective to use combination of the Monte Carlo method with traditional methods of numerical solving of the problems (methods of linear, nonlinear and dynamic programming and so on). A quality characteristic analysed through construction of the Shewhart control chart is required to be normally distributed. In mining applications, this assumption is often violated as many quality characteristics follow skewed or lognormal distribution. In this paper, two methods were investigated using a heuristic approach for setting up the control limits for a skewed population. Based on these approaches a Mode chart, and a Weighted Variance (WV) control charts were constructed. The performance of the proposed methods was compared with the normal based Shewhart method through a case study conducted in a surface mine supplying iron ore to a steel plant. A simulation study was also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods over the Shewhart method. The study revealed that the Shewhart control charts generated more out of control alarms compared with the Mode and Weighted Variance control charts for a skewed population of Fe%. The simulation results also revealed that for extremely high skewed population, the WV control chart and Mode control chart provided higher probability of coverage than the Shewhart method; although the detection rate (probability of detection) of out of control condition for these methods was slightly reduced compared with Shewhart method.

A scraper-based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower orebody at Nchanga since the 1950s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas, the 2420 8E 1C trial drift, was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre-reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre-reinforced shotcreteat Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.

This paper describes the decision to implement and then the implementation itself, through trials, of electronic ?Smartdets? over previously used shock tubes. It concludes that Mufulira Mine has become the first mine in Zambia to convert 100% of its stoping to ?Smartdets?, because the Mine?s management was prepared to look beyond the unit cost of product and were ready to look at the broader picture of cost effectiveness and increased productivity.

To determine the effect of F ions in the molten alkali silicate systems on their structures, quenched Na2O-SiO2-NaF systems were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. The systematic increase of 1100 cm-1band intensity in the Raman spectra of the silicate melts accompanying the replacement of F for O provides the evidence for concomitant polymerization of melts. From the molecular dynamics simulation, it was confirmed that most of substituted F was mainly coordinated to Na+ ions but not Si4+ions. These results were consistent with the mechanism in which F associated with otherwise network-modifying Na rather than with network-forming Si. Since F was associated to Na+ ions, the replace of O ion by two F ions promote the polymerization of silicate melts. Resue mining was practiced extensively in the East Rand in the first half of this century. The obvious benefits were that a higher grade of ore was trammed to the surface. The disadvantages were slow rates of face advance and an extremely labour-intensive method of mining. A collaborative effort by personnel from Avgold?s Target Gold Mine and Sandvik Tamrock has resulted in the design of a method of resue mining which can be totally mechanized. The purpose of this paper is to describe the methodology used and the proposed new mechanized resue mining method.

The validity of a steady state assumption made by Adams and Nicol (1986) in the modelling of the elution of gold from activated carbon was investigated. It is shown that the accuracy of the steady state approximation is dependent, not only on the magnitudes of the solution flow rate and reactor volume, but also on the lumped elution rate constant. Under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady state assumption was inaccurate. This could be circumvented in this instance by applying a rigorous general model which accounts for unsteady state behaviour in the solution and in the activated carbon to the experimental data.

In recent years there has been an increased focus on corporate governance matters worldwide. The duties and responsibilities of directors of companies have come under close scrutiny, with shareholders increasing their demands for greater responsibility and accountability. Media attention and pressure groups have also had their effect. Governmental actions have supported these demands and directors have witnessed sweeping legislative changes imposing more onerous duties and liabilities than formerly imposed upon them at common law and in terms of the Companies Act. At the same time, the power of regulatory bodies has been increased to enforce this legislation and make someone pay to remedy an alleged infringement. Breach of such duties may incur personal or criminal liability, or both. Environmental protection legislation has become a particularly prevalent feature in this regard, and the number and complexity of statutes concerning the environment have increased over the past few years. Directors of South African companies will be familiar with relevant acts such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998; Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act 43 of 1983;Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973, as well as the National Water Act 36 of 1998. Now the directors of mining companies are faced with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.

Beneficiation, in the context of this paper, has two distinct definitions. From an economic perspective, beneficiation relates to adding value to a mined raw material. From a metallurgy perspective, beneficiation relates to processes used to upgrade the mined raw material. Clearly then, ?economic beneficiation? is dependent on ?metallurgical beneficiation?. South Africa possesses the world?s largest mineral resources by value and is a significant global producer of many mined commodities. Significant metallurgical beneficiation of ores does occur in South Africa. The role of metallurgy in economic beneficiation will be examined in terms of current practice and the potential for expansion. South Africa?s main mining commodities will be covered ? namely gold, platinum, coal, iron ore, manganese, chromium, vanadium, copper, nickel, titanium, zirconium, uranium, and diamonds.

In this paper the origins of the mortar intruded concrete concept and its development and application in the construction of watertight bulkheads in South Africa are described. The events leading to the commissioning and execution of the West Driefontein Experimental Plug and the Virginia/Merriespruit Boundary Plugs, and their roles in the proving of the technique, follow. The development of the first Transvaal and Orange Free State Chamber of Mines Code of Practice for Mortar Intrusion Concrete for Underground Plugs and Bulkheads, Johannesburg, November 1962,is explained. The saga of the October 1968 flood and subsequent salvage of the West Driefontein Gold Mine is recounted. The paper concludes with mention of the validation programme carried out for the Placer Dome Western Areas Joint Venture and their South Deep water barrier programme.

Ongoing rockpass problems on mines within the South Africa region, prompted AngloGold Ashanti to embark on a risk assessment of major rockpasses. This commenced with the collection of relevant data to identify gaps in the available knowledge and identify existing problems. This was followed by an assessment of rockpass layouts to determine existing and potential interactions with other excavations. An initial risk assessment has been completed and the rockpasses have been ranked in terms of their risk profile. The lack of geological data and an easy and reliable method of surveying rockpasses have been identified as problem areas. Shortcoming is terms of rockpass management procedures have also been identified. Further work is required to quantify the risk in terms of probability of occurrence and consequences.

The work described here attempts to underscore the importance of the time lag between the end of a loading phase and the instant a winding drum begins its acceleration phase. Traces generated from a computer-simulation model show that the amplitude of the stress oscillations occurring in mine hoisting cable during the constant velocity-of-ascent phase is a direct result of the temporal sequence employed between the loading and the raising phases. While current and early literature indicates that extensive work has been undertaken on the isolated effects of these two independent sequences, the literature does not appear to contain any documented evidence to suggest an optimal control or interfacing between these two dynamic regimes.

The performance of microemulsified diesel and conventional diesel collectors in coal flotation was compared by flotation indicators, including combustible recovery, ash content of the clean coal, and the flotation index. An efficient separation with lower dosage was obtained using the microemulsified diesel collector. Under optimum separation conditions, the microemulsion consumption was 100 g/t less compared with diesel. The saving in diesel consumption using the microemulsion reached about 70%, disregarding the consumption of the surfactant and cosurfactant. Frothing tests showed that the frother dosage was decreased by using the microemulsion collector, because of the surfactant and cosurfactant added during preparation. The microemulsified diesel collector is superior to the conventional diesel collector in terms of diesel consumption and separation efficiency, but the selectivity requires further improvement. The rock brittleness is one of the most important rock properties that affect the drill-ability of rocks. It is supposed that the increase in rock brittleness causes the increase in penetration rate. The drill-ability of rocks depends on many factors. These factors can be separated as two parts depending on a machine, bit type, rotational speed, thrust, blow frequency, flushing, and rock properties, brittleness, compressive strength, structure, hardness, etc. In this paper, the relationship between brittleness and drill-ability index, which is used in the prediction analysis of the penetration rate of rotary blast hole drills, were examined using regression analysis. It is also seen that significant correlations exist between brittleness and the drill-ability index.

The Moon, asteroids, and planets of the solar system represent the most distant caches of wealth that humanity has ever considered recovering. Yet, in addition to the potentially recoverable values represented there, harvesting off-Earth resources has a second, almost incalculable sustainable benefit in that they can be retrieved with absolutely no damage to Earth. Previous research mostly assessed the potential of asteroids and the Moon for mining purposes from a theoretical and scientific point of view. These studies investigated drawbacks that could be experienced in this type of operation, but no detailed economic evaluation that is meaningful for mining project management has been conducted and the parameters that are most likely to make an operation feasible are unknown. This paper provides a preliminary economic and sensitivity analysis of a possible off-Earth mining business extracting minerals from an existing asteroid.

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored. In past years, Chile has been the largest copper producer in the world and for 2002 mining represented country average of 10 % of the GDP, accounting for 47 % of the total exportation. As copper sulphides are the main mining resources in the country, the metal is produced using the classical processes of flotation and pyrometallurgical extraction. Seven copper smelter plants, which extends from the northern Atacama desert to the central part of the country produced1,522,000 metric tons of fine copper in 2002, approximately one half of total copper concentrate production, with a notorious environmental impact due to the great amount of slag produced during these extraction steps. In this work, a global characterization of copper pyrometallurgical slags produced and disposed of in Chile and worldwide is done, and the concept of total project development is considered to explain the scopes of the study, recovering different compounds and generating new activities around mining. The presentation is completed with the proposal of various methods and techniques being developed today in a joint project between smelter plants and the University of Concepción, with the support of the Chilean government and mining companies, addressed to generate new materials from copper slag. Recovery of copper, molybdenum, precious metals, silica and iron, that is the most abundant component of the slag, are the goals for this research. Metals, commercial compounds, alloys and different forms of iron oxides for steel industry are proposed products.

Most of the compounds present in slag are surface active. This gives rise to foaminess of slag. The foam life and foaming index are normally determined by the draining rate of slag through the plateau border, so the foaming index is directly proportional to slag viscosity and inversely proportional to slag density and bubble diameter. When a small amount of a strong surface active compound like P2O5or Cr2O3is present in slag, however, the foam life increases significantly and the above relationship is not obeyed. The strong surface active compounds reduce the draining rate from the film between the adjacent bubbles so the film draining controls the life of the foam. The thickness of the film, Marangoni force, viscosity of the slag, and diffusion of surface active compounds determine the film draining rate. The interplay of these factors leads to very low or high film draining rates and affects the film and foam stability significantly. Keywords: slag, foam, foaming index, film draining
