The Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion tests of 18 commercial alloys in H3 P04 -phosphate rock or A1,03 slurry, in 10 pct HF, and in 25 pct H2 SiF6 to simulate three environments anticipated in a Bureau process to extract fluoride values from phosphate rock. Small alloy coupons were rotated in duplicate tests at 4.4 to 21 fps in the slurry at 170° C to determine rates of erosion-corrosion. At 4.4 fps the lowest rates, in mils penetration per year (mpy), were measured for Hastelloy C-276 (<20), Hastelloy B (30), and Inconel 625 (150);the rates increased at 21 fps to 55 mpy, 45 mpy, and 1,000 mpy, respectively. The corrosion rate for all alloys exceeded 40 mpy in either the equilibrium vapor or liquid phases of aqueous solutions containing 10 pct HF or 25 pct H2SiF6 at 100° C. Uniform corrosion in 10 pct HF at 50° C was observed only for Inconel 625 (22 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (43 mpy), and Illium 98 (17 mpy). Inconel 625 (0.75 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (1.3 mpy), Illium 98 (1.7 mpy), and Incoloy 825 (0.45 mpy) were attacked uniformly in 25 pct H2SiF6 at 50° C.

"At the annual meeting of the International Association of Fire Engineers at Kansas City, Mo., in June, 1919, the Bureau of Mines offered to cooperate with municipal fire departments for the purpose of obtaining information regarding composition of the air in burning buildings. (Katz, S. H., Statement made at Convention of International Assoc. of Fire Engineers: Fire and Water Eng., vol. 66, July 16, 1919, pp. 129-30, also Fireman's Herald, vol. 78, July 12, 1919, pp. 48.) The gas-mask laboratory of the Bureau's experiment station at Pittsburgh sent vacuum bottles for taking samples to fire chiefs in twenty-five cities, who had signified their intention to aid in this work. It was hoped to obtain one hundred or more samples, because statistics in quantity are necessary for drawing reliable conclusions concern-in the likelihoods of encountering irrespirable as in burning buildings. This far, eleven samples have been received by the laboratory. Results of analyses and pertinent data regarding these samples are given in the accompanyingEight of the eleven samples contained, no carbon monoxide; seven of the eight were taken above the ground level and one below ground. One sample taken above ground contained 0.03 per cent carbon monoxide, and this quantity is not dangerous to breathe for a limited time. Of the three samples taken below ground, one contained no carbon monoxide; the other two contained 0.10 and, 0.35 per cent, respectively. This indicates that in a burning building, the hazard from carbon monoxide is much greater below the ground level. The cause undoubtedly lies in the poorer ventilation that is usually found in cellars or basements. Abundance of ventilation provides the necessary air for complete combustion, or if incomplete combustion does occur, the carbon monoxide generated by the fire is greatly diluted with fresh air and swept away by the current. It may be noted that the highest proportion of carbon monoxide was found in a cellar where a fire as burning among piled cases. The difficult access of air to the burning parts facilitated the formation and lib ration of carbon monoxide. The smoke here was very light and no difficulty was experienced in breathing. Some of the air containing dense smoke showed little change from normal air by analysis. Thus the density of smoke or the irritation and difficulty it causes in breathing are no indication of the presence of poisonous gas. None of the samples shows important oxygen."

"The tungsten area in southern Mecklenburg County, Virginia, was studied by the Bureau of Mines during the period August 1944 to March 1945. The explorations were an expansion of the work done by the Bureau in 1943 in the tungsten area of Vance County, North Carolina, which joins Mecklenburg County on the south.3/Outcrops of quartz veins in the area were searched for and examined, and the only Promising showing found (a vein on the Gladys N. Taylor tract) was explored by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling (fig. 1).Mecklenburg County, Virginia, is in the southeastern part of the State, bordering on North Carolina,U. S. Highways 1, 15, and 58 traverse the County, and State and County roads provide ready access to most parts of the area.In 1942, Joseph and Richard Hamme discovered tungsten-bearing quartz veins in Vance County, Forth Carolina, and started mining and milling the ore. The first concentrates were shipped in July 1943. In August 1943, the Hamme holdings were acquired by Haile Mines, Inc., who continued the mining operations.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work in North Carolina in June 1943. Reconnaissance work showed that the mineralized belt extends north-ward into Virginia. The Kimball tract, which joins the Taylor property on the north, was explored in 1943 by trenching and drilling by the R. G. Lassiter interests of Raleigh, Y. C., with disappointing results.The topography of the district is mature and characterized by wide, shallow valleys and low, rounded ridges. The main ridges trend northeast. Most of the area ranges from 300 feet to 400 feet above sea level.The relief apparently is controlled by resistant quartz lenses and the associated hard, silicified zones. The enclosing schists and granites are usually deeply weathered. Consequently, most of the quartz veins are found on the ridges."

At its annual meeting on March 5, 1928, in Washington, D. C., the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association gave to the Ford Collieries Co., Curtisville, Pa., a certificate of honor for "having worked 922,628 underground man-shifts from August 14, 1920, to December 31, 1926, producing 5,755,669 short tons of coal without a fatality." This remarkable record certainly deserved recognition. It developed that this company's freedom from fatalities continued until October 2, 1929, hence the full period during which no underground fatalities occurred was from August 14, 1920, to October 2, 1929, or 9 years, 1 month, and 18 days, the total tonnage being over 7,700,000. Table 1, shows the complete safety record of the Ford Collieries Co. since 1920 as given by the officials of the company. The first item in Table 1 shows a remarkable performance. This company since 1920 has mined 15 times more coal per fatal accident than the average pro- duction per fatal accident for the State of Pennsylvania in 1928 (255,257 tons). Excluding the two fatalities (one in 1922 and one in 1929) the severity rate for the same period has been 1.259 per thousand hours worked, a record of which the company may justly be proud. However, including the fatal accidents the rate is 2.407. This compares favorably with an average of 12.4 in 1928 for 66 mines in the National Safety Competition. The Ford Collieries Co. operates three mines located in the vicinity of Curtisville, Allegheny County, Pa. One of these mines, Benjamin No. 1, is idle at the present time. The officials are: A. R. Pollock, general manager, Curtisville, Pa., and C. W. Pollock, assistant general manager in charge of safety and operation.

An estimated capital investment of $76,499,800 will be required for a plant designed and built to produce 90 million standard cubic feet per day (std.c.f.d.) of synthetic pipeline gas through Lurgi gasification of bituminous char. This investment figure does not include the pretreatment plant, the cost of which is assumed to be reflected in the cost of the char fed to the gasification system. Shift conversion, C02 removal, and methanation are required after gasification in the Lurgi unit to make a gas suitable for pipeline transmission. Capital investment data are based upon equipment costs, January 1959. "I. IntroductionThe alveolar surface of the lung is covered by two populations of pneumocytes, type I and type II epithelium. The type I cell, which accounts for most of the alveolar surface area and provides a highly specialized barrier for gas exchange (Rannels et al., 1991), is poorly understood. Although approaches to type I cell purification have been discussed, they have not been applied widely because of the lack of phenotypic markers to monitor isolation procedures (Dobbs et al., 1988; Danto et al., 1992). In contrast, the type II cell has been studied extensively, largely because of the development of reliable procedures for its isolation and primary culture. Investigations based on the use of purified populations of cultured type II cells have provided convincing evidence to support a role for the pneumocytes both in the maintenance of normal lung function and in the response of the lung to injury (for review, see Rannels and Rannels, 1989).While type II cells can be isolated by a variety of approaches, the protocols used most commonly are modifications of the gradient method of Dobbs and Mason (1979) or of the panning method of Dobbs et al. (1986). Purification of the cells based on density gradient centrifugation is reliable and consistent, with yields of 30 to 40 X 106 type II cells per rat of 230 g body weight. Isolation procedures applied to a minimum of three to four rats provide the best results, as lower cell yields are common with the use of fewer animals. The theory of electromagnetic fields indicates such fields could be used to detect and locate trapped miners. To be useful, the hardware of the system must meet a number of requirements, including small size, intrinsic safety, and rugged construction. Such hardware has been built, and the system has been tested by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors. These tests indicate that the electromagnetic method provides a practical means to locate miners in emergencies.

The Smokescope is an instrument recently developed for determining the density of smoke by shade comparison. The instrument is designed so that the smoke is seen adjacent to two shades of gray corresponding to Nos. 2 and 3 on the Ringelmann chart. Data on smoke density are important in the smoke-abatement field. The method that is specified and accepted as standard for smoke-density determination by the majority of city smoke regulations involves comparing the smoke shade with the four shades on the Ringelmann chart as published by the Bureau of Mines.2/ This investigation was made to determine the accuracy and convenience of the Smokescope. It was conducted as a part of the Bureau I s air-pollution work, which includes the study of techniques that will promote smoke abatement. The accuracy of the Smokescope was arbitrarily defined as the difference between the Smokescope determinations and the determinations by the accepted, standard method and was expressed as Smokescope correction. Although the corrections obtained were strictly correct only for the two observers and the Smokescope of the investigation, they indicate what might be expected from any observer who uses a Smokescope with reference shades that duplicate those of the test instrument. The report is devoted largely to the data on Smokescope correction, which were taken from a single stack under controlled smoke conditions. Field work, which was done at various locations with different stacks, is mentioned briefly in connection with the comparison of the convenience of the two methods. The data for estimating Smokescope correction were taken for the three variables that were expected to affect the results, namely, the density of the smoke, the amount of light, and the color of the sky behind the smoke.

Material used for flame safety lamp gauzes should possess the following qualities: (1) mechanical strength, (2) resistance to corrosion under service con- ditions, (3) a relatively high thermal conductivity, (4) a melting point above the ignition temperature of mine gas. Heretofore, three metals have been used for flame lamp gauzes, namely: steel, brass and copper. While each of these has the requisite qualities to some extent, none of them is an ideal gauze material. Copper gauzes lack mechanical strength, especiall, after they have been heated; brass and copper both have comparatively low melting points so that before the gas ignition is reached the gauze metal is attacked and oxidized under the action of the heat. Steel corrodes readily in damp atmos- pheres and if the lamp stands unused under these conditions for some time, the gauzes become unfit for service. Tests of these three materials have shown that steel offers the highest degree of safety. Manel metal, the natural alloy of nickel and copper, is practically noncor- rodible. Its relting point is approximately the same as that of steel. From time to time it has been suggested that this alloy might be a better gauze material than steel, since gauzes made of Monel metal should have all of the good qualities that steel gauzes possess and, in addition, would not corrode appreciably in ordinary mine atmospheres. One advocate of this use for Monel metal, the International Nickel Co., through their development engineer, Mr. Robert J. McKay, cooperated with the Interior Department, Bureau of ines, to the extent of supplying twelve sets of 30 mesh, Monel-metal gauzes for tests. Those gauzes were made up by the same lamp manufactur- er ho rade the steel gauzes used in the previous investigation. Being made by the same processes as the steel gauzes, these Manel-metal gauzes were needlessly given the same anti-rust coating that is always applied to steel gauzes to prevent any corrosion before the gauzes are used. In previous tests the Bureau of Mines had collected data as to the behavior of steel gauzes. In determining the value of Monel metal as a gauze material, it was planned to obtain similar data with Monel-metal gauzes, and thus make a direct comparison with the steel gauzes. "The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

Like many experienced workers, remote control continuous miner operators perform their everyday jobs making choices and decisions that they may not consciously think about. While performing tasks, they are continuously processing feedback and cues which guide them for the next move. Initial training teaches the operators the tasks necessary to operate the equipment and perform the job. However, with experience they are better able to deal with hazardous conditions and non routine situations. To better understand what potential cues and feedback help to guide the operators, a questionnaire was developed to learn what factors affect decisions. Operator responses address issues related to specific tasks, equipment operation, visibility, lighting, and communication issues. The information collected is useful to understand what cues experienced operators use to make task performance decisions. Results will be used to develop interventions and training for safe and effective operator performance.

A technique offering promise as a metallurgical processing sequence the recovery of molybdenum (Mo) from the sulfide mineral--molybdenite?was investigated. The method consists of two steps: (1) electrosynthesis of pure dimolybdenum carbide (Mo2C) from molybdenite (MoS2) and (2) interaction of Mo2C and molybdic oxide (MoO3) to produce pure molybdenum metal. Two molten salt systems were satisfactory for electrosynthesizing Mo2C. The first was a mixture of potassium chloride (KCl), potassium fluoride (KY), and sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3), and the second consisted of sodium fluoride (NaF), KF, sodium tetraborate (Na2B4O7), and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). Yields up to 0.42 gram of Mo2C per ampere-hour were obtained. The carbide, mixed with monitored amounts of MoO3, was converted to molybdenum metal of 99.9 percent purity by sintering at 1,500° C.

The metal lithium, its alloys, and its salts are becoming Increasingly important as industrial materials. Lithium metal, because of its great affinity for elements, such as nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon, and silicon, has become important for a wide variety of uses, ranging from purifying helium gas by removing the nitrogen to scavenging molten metals of undesirable impurities. The excellent fluxing properties of lithium salts have found increasing use in such applications as fluxes for welding aluminum and in lower melting ceramic glazes and coatings. Lithium chloride is one of the most hygroscopic salts known and is widely used as a dehumidifying agent. .About 17 lithium minerals are known. Four of these have commercial importance: Amblygonite, lepidolite, zinnwaldite, and spodumene. Spodumene is the most important source of lithium and lithium salts at present, but sizable deposits of amblygonite occur in the pegmatite area of the Black Hills of South Dakota. The size and nature of these deposits preclude the, possibility of, any assurance of an adequate supply of amblygonite for an operation processing only this mineral. Frequently spodumene and amblygonite occur associated in pegmatite minerals. Preliminary investigations indicate that a simultaneous recovery of spodumene and amblygonite can be made by froth flotation. A single process for treating spodumene and amblygonite or mixtures of thorn, would make possible more use of amblygonite as a source of lithium and obviate the separation of spodumene and amblygonite when they occur together.

In conjunction -with the statistical survey of the lime industr-.r in 1939, by the Bureau of Hines, producing companies reported the lime-fuel ratios attained in their plants according to type of kiln and kind of fuel. Each ratio, expressed as the number of pounds of lime burned by a unit quantity of fuel, was weighted according to the tonnage of quicklime pro- . duced at the reporting plant and grouped with similar data from other plants, so that an average ratio for each type of fuel and,kiln could be calculated. By this method the variables trat affect ratios of individual plants are more or less equalized, and the computed average lime-fuel ratios provide a fair measure of kiln and fuel efficiencies during 1939.

"Diesel exhaust soots were assayed in the Ames Salmonella typhimurium histidine reversion assay system using TA 98, the soots being applied as the following preparations: dispersion in dipaimitoyl glycerophosphoryl choline (DPL), dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (DPP!), and dispersion in dipalmitoyl phosphatidic acid (DPPA) in physiological saline, and in physiological saline without added surfactant. The extracts of soots by dichloromethane / dimethylsulfoxide (DCM/BHSO) were also assayed. Studies were performed both with and without :IQ microsomal activation of the soot preparations. The DPP! and DPPA surfactants were chosen as phospholiridz with two palmitic acid moieties esterified to a glycerol as is the case with DPL, but with hydrophilic groups having different electrophilic characters. The soots, without S9 activation, showed mutegenic activity when extracted in the conventional procedure with DCM/DMSO. The mutagenic activity of soots dispersed in DPL was quantitatively comparable to, and in some cases greater than, the activity expressed by an equal mass of soot extracted by DCM/DMSO. Soots in other surfactantpreparations, DPP! and DPPA, also expressed positive mutagenic activity. Praincubation with S9 microsomal enzyme fraction reduced the activity of solvent extracted soots, and greatly diminished the activity of DPL dispersed soots. Initial sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assays using the Chinese hamster V79 cell line indicated DPL dispersed soot also can cause SCR in mammalian cells. Results thus far suggest that surfactant suspended or ""solubilized"" respirable soot particles could provide a mechanism for transport and expression of mutagens in the lung."

In its endeavor to promote a more efficient use of coal the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois State geological survey and the University of Illinois, has undertaken an investigation of the coking of Illinois coals. The investigation was started by collecting from various sources the data regarding experiments already made by others; these data have been compiled and are presented herein. The present methods of using coal seem wasteful. When coal is burned in furnaces for the generation of steam, only the heat gener- ated by the fuel is utilized; possible by-products are not only lost but frequently are the source of the smoke nuisance. The volatile matter containing the tar and heavy hydrocarbon gases is difficult to burn completely in many furnaces, and its decomposition produces black smoke. When coal is coked in a by-product oven, the volatile matter is no longer a nuisance but, on the contrary, is the source of many by-products, including benzol, toluol, gas, tar, ammonia, and cyano- gen, all of which increase the value that may be obtained from coal. The coke that remains after the volatile matter has been driven off is a valuable fuel that can be used for almost all purposes for which bituminous coal can be used, and it is necessary for some metallurgical work. It has about the same heating value as anthracite coal. Because of its cleanness and its burning without smoke, it is well suited for domestic heating and the generation of steam in plants where smokelessness is demanded. The use of coke for these pur- poses would do much to eliminate smoke in cities. The best grades are regarded as essential in many metallurgical processes for reduc- ing ores to their metals. By-product coking in the United States during the past three years has increased greatly. When the ovens now in course of construction are completed, the total capacity of by-product ovens will be more than double what it was in 1913. This increase has led to a search for coals other than those now known to be available for use in by- product ovens. Tests with coals from the southern part of Illinois have indicated that coke from Illinois coal unmixed with other coals can be used for fuel purposes and that coke from mixtures of Illinois coal with low-volatile coking coal might be suitable for some metal- lurgical work. In the tests the yield of ammonia was larger than is obtained from Eastern coal. Evidently the development of methods by which good coke can be made from Illinois coals and the by-products recovered is a matter of high importance. Any investigation that will indicate how, by proper treatment, these coals can be made available to supply the market for coke and gas in the Middle West will increase efficiency in their use, and will aid in conserving the country's supply of high-grade coking coal.
