Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. This report is designed to assist producers in understanding the complexities of marketing muscovite sheet mica. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Special acknowledgment is due S. A. Mine One General. The first summer field trip for the purpose of collecting data on open-pit metal mine grounding systems was marred by the fact that the group's ground test instrument was damaged in transit and proved to be inoperative. Fortunately, the mine personnel had a similar instrument which was then used for all tests. System Description. Power is purchased from the utility at either 69 or 100 kV. This is transformed to 4160 V at the pit substations and distributed around the periphery of the pit via a "ring bus." The three phase wires and the safety-ground conductor are carried on a conventional wooden pole and cross-arm support structure. At key loca¬tions, overhead feeders carry power from the ring bus down over the benches and into the pit. Each overhead feeder is terminated at a switchhouse, from which an SHD-GC trailing cable supplies power to the electric loading shovels. Each pit substation has a main or system-ground mat, installed by the utility, and a separate safety-ground mat, which is constructed by mine personnel. Three of the safety-ground mats are quite old, and personnel at the mine could not recall what type of construction was used. However, records are available on the fourth mat and construc¬tion details are shown in Figure 64. An investigation was made by the Federal Bureau of Mines of methods for determining phosphorus in coal, coal ash, and coke ash. Several of these methods are being considered for international standardization. As might be expected, methods and proposals from other countries for determining phosphorus differ considerably from those accepted an standard in the United States. Some of the methods differ fundamentally in principle from the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standard used in the United States; others differ only in details of procedure. Because the Bureau considered that certain of the proposed methods might offer advantages in obtaining increased accuracy and precision or in decreasing the time required for making analyses, these methods were investigated, and the results compared with those obtained by the ASTM method. The methods investigated may be grouped into three types--volumetric, colorimetric, and gravimetric. All were about equally accurate and may be used alternatively. From a practical viewpoint, when only a limited number of analyses are made intermittently, the gravimetric procedure probably is the most suitable because no special apparatus or standard solutions are required. The volumetric methods are more rapid when more analyses are made. For mass production, the colorimetric methods, although requiring a suitable photometer or spectrophotometer, are more suitable because a large throughput should be feasible.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation to study the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and water spray in suppressing respirable dust at the tips of a saw-type cutting wheel. Suppression efficiencies were found to be proportional to the amount of the water or steam applied at the cutter tips. For equivalent water output rates, a maximum efficiency of approximately 80 percent was reached for both steam and water spray. Results from the steam and water spray tests showed an increase in suppression efficiency with an increase in particle size of 1 to 8 micrometers. The data indicate no advantages for using steam as a dust suppressant.

This report, the 22d in a series, gives analytical data showing composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1972. This coverage lists mines located in 20 States. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. The deliveries were sampled in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

Owing to the daily exposures of uranium mining personnel to 222Rn daughters, a device is needed that will continually monitor individual exposure. Such a device has been built and tested by the Bureau of Mines and is known as a radon daughter dosimeter. This is an electronic instrument using a solid-state detector and circuitry. The concept of the instrument, which is a personal device worn throughout the working shift, is to evaluate an individual's cumulative exposure to airborne radon progeny, expressed in units of working level hours. Since the instrument is in close proximity to the miner and measures continual exposure, it avoids the errors caused by the present technique of spot checking of the environment and provides a more accurate account of total cumulative exposure.

A FORTW IV computer program has been written to calculate thermodynamic properties over a desired temperature range from spectroscopic data. This program computes heat capacities, enthalpies, and entropies for monatomic, diatomic, linear, and nonlinear polyatomic gases. This research is part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for the advancement of mineral technology.

This paper is one of a series on milling methods being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. Atlanta is in Elmore County, Idaho, about 80 miles from the railroad at Mountain Home, Idaho. The concentrator is at an elevation of, 6,000 feet and located in a timbered, well-watered region of relatively heavy snowfall. The snow, however, does not seriously affect local operations. The track road to Mountain Home, which passes over a mountain range, is closed each winter from about November 1 to June 15. During this period concentrates are stored and bullion is shipped by airplane. Power is generated by a Diesel engine and by an auxiliary hydroelectric plant. Gold is the principal metal produced; the or also contains an able quantity of silver.

This information circular is offered to the coal-mining industry for use as a guide in selecting, placing, and caring for fire-fighting equipment in coal mines. Its purpose is to suggest minimum requirements for fire protection underground, and it is presented with the hope that it will aid in establishing adequate standards that will provide reasonable protection against underground fires in coal mines. Potentially, a coal mine is a hazardous fire area. Coal itself is a combustible substance, easily ignited. In addition, large quantities of other combustible materials must be present in the area of operations; these include materials for roof support, track ties, doors, ventilation stoppings, lubricants, etc.

Provide a low-cost, low-maintenance method for im¬proving mine water quality on abandoned mine land (AML) sites. Approach A model (figure 1) is presented for selecting, designing, and sizing one or several passive mine drainage treatment systems that can be used in remediation of AML. The three principal types of passive mine drainage technologies for the treatment of coal mine drainage are an aerobic system, a compost wetland, and an anoxic limestone drain. The multistep approach presented here provides a simplified method to characterize the type and magnitude of the water quality problem and then to select either a single treatment system or a combination of treatment systems to address the specific site situation. How It Works Step 1. Discharge Characterization. Characterization of the discharge consists of measuring the discharge flow rate and collecting water samples at the point of discharge for chemical analysis. Both the flow rate and chemistry of a discharge can vary seasonally and in response to storm events. It is important to account for this variability by determining flow rates and water chemistry under various conditions. Water should be analyzed for pH, dissolved iron (Fe), alkalinity, and hot acidity (using the H2O2 method).

Tar produced as a byproduct from low-temperature carbonization of coal contains only small amounts of valuable lower boiling tar acids but relatively high percentages of high-boiling tar acids. These high-boiling tar acids are characterized by a high degree of alkylation and can be converted into the lower boiling homologs by catalytic treatment to remove the alkyl groups or decrease their chain lengths.

Coal is a soft and brittle material. Drilling rates in the Pittsburgh coalbed using a drag bit exceed 3 ft/min at 2,500-pound thrust. However, maintaining the bit on a horizontal trajectory or parallel to bedding planes to attain lengths of 1,000 feet is difficult. This Bureau of Mines report presents a drill string configuration that can be guided through the coalbed. The angle of the borehole is measured periodically and by proper combinations of bit thrust and rotational speed (r/min), bit trajectory can be lifted or dropped to keep the bit in the coalbed. An example of a hole drilled to 2,126 feet is presented to show levels of thrust and rotational speed used to lift or drop the bit, the seemingly unexplainable events that occur, and the strategy used during drilling. Thrust levels during drilling range from 600 to 2,500 pounds. Hydraulic motors powered by a 30-hp, 440-volt motor provide ample power for drilling horizontal holes 2,000 feet long.

A simple , quick, and relatively accurate device is needed for determining the presence of very small concentrations of organic halide gases in various atmospheres . Such a device would enable safety engineers , health officials , and others to discover quickly the presence of these gases in a suspected atmosphere and thus be able to apply protective measures promptly. This detector should prove useful in detecting leakage of halide gases from refrigerating and air - conditioning systems and in determining the presence of halide solvents in the atmosphere of dry - cleaning and degreasing establishments where organic halide solvents are used . Virtually all poison war gases are halide compounds . Because of the high toxicity of these gases , even in very low concentrations , a detector having the proper sensitivity should be useful in civilian defense for determining when atmospheres are relatively free of poison gases .

Problems of design involving the high-temperature characteristics of materials of construction have focused attention on tungsten, the metal with the highest melting point. To study the properties of this metal a method was needed to produce tungsten of high purity easily and consistently. The Bureau of Mines has made tungsten metal in massive form on a laboratory scale by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride (WF6). Metal made in this manner had a purity of 99.99 percent or better, with reference to all detectable impurities, including gases. The process tolerated a wide variation in operating conditions, and the results with respect to total impurities as low as 0.01 percent were reproducible.

The effect of indium on the solid solubility of calcium and of silicon in magnesium was studied using metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and electrical resistivity techniques. The addition of 2 weight-percent or more of indium reduced the solid solubility of calcium in magnesium by forming a compound containing indium and calcium. Indium additions have no perceptible effect on the solid solubility of silicon in magnesium.

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. In 1938 , the Bureau of Mines cooperated with Subcommittee XV on Plasticity and Swelling of Coal ( C. C. Russell , chairman ) , of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke , A.S.T.M. , by testing various methods for determining expansion and plastic properties of a series of coals of widely different coking properties . One of the tests made by the Bureau was the British Standard Method for the Crucible Swelling Test for Coal.5/ Briefly , this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties .. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross -sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index . Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization , it gave indications of having value in measuring free - swelling and caking properties of coals when burned on fuel beds . An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineer of an eastern public utility 'company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal . Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling 'excessively and clogging the grates . Samples were ob- · tained , and it was found that the troublesome coals gave decidedly higher free -swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily . Also , it was found that the free - swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the · ´`standard volatile -matter test or from agglutinating - value results . The results of the free - swelling tests were considered by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling , and a special group of the subcommittee , under the chairmanship of R. A. Sherman , was delegated to study the test method . Ostborg , Limbacher , and Sherman , ofthe Battelle Memorial Institute , ' investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential -type stokers from the standpoint of the coking characteristics of the coal . Data were presented also showing that the indexes wer helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers .

The Bureau of nines, in cooperation with the mining companies of the Southwest, is conducting an investigating to ascertain the safest and most economical explosives to use in metal mines, and to ascertain the best methods of blasting under various conditions. A part of this investigation has been a study of drilling and blasting drift rounds in metal mines. This paper covers one phase of work on drift rounds and discusses the methods of loading the individual holes of the rounds. The blasting tests, on which this paper is based, were made at the Copper queen Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation at Bisbee, Arizona.
