Domestic bismuth supply was projected from production figures for the ores in which it occurs--copper, lead, zinc, and tungsten. Published and unpublished data concerning host ores were examined to determine bismuth reserves and resources, and mine production. Potential recoverable bismuth occurring with reserves and resources of copper, lead, and zinc was estimated to be 36.3 million pounds. A bismuth availability diagram was developed from quantity estimates and ratios of production cost to value for these host ores. Additional recoverable bismuth occurring with domestic tungsten reserves was estimated to be 1.5 million pounds. Domestic byproduct production of bismuth will approximate 1.3 million pounds annually by 1980. This quantity will provide about 37 percent of the 3.5-million-pound estimated requirement for that year. Known world supply of bismuth appears to be sufficient for world demand to the end of this century. The study indicates that bismuth reserves and potential resources in the rest of the world have not been adequately reported.

Depletion of iron ore in the Nation's large deposits has directed attention to other sources. One of these is the titaniferous iron ore of the Iron Mountain, Wyo., area. Tests were made to determine the feasibility of smelting this ore, which contains about 20 percent titanium dioxide (Ti02), in an electric-arc furnace to produce pig iron. Initial tests, which were made in a 30-pound-capacity induction furnace, demonstrated that the iron could be easily reduced to metal and that limestone was a suitable and effective flux. Larger scale tests then were made in a 50-pound-capacity electric-arc furnace to obtain the more detailed information necessary for the planned continuous operation of a still larger arc furnace. The principal facts determined by preliminary batch-smelting studies were that (1) 9 pounds of limestone flux was required for each 100 pounds of ore smelted, (2) expensive coke was not required because coal proved to be a satisfactory reductant (near stoichiometric carbon was optimum), and (3) overreduction, which produced a viscous slag, must be avoided.

"REASONS FOR AND PURPOSE OF WORKIn 1924 the United States Public Health Service was requested to undertake a special study of stream pollution. At that time the proposal that the United States Bureau of Mines take up the study was made by the Public Health Service because in point of training and experience the personnel of the latter was considered not to be as well, suited to this type of investigation as was that of the Bureau of Mines. H. Foster Bain, then Director of this bureau, promised to undertake the work, and, accordingly, field investigations were begun in the spring of 1925. The problems of mine-drainage wastes and of gas-house and coke-oven waste were investigated in the laboratory, and a method of treatment by sodium hydrate and benzol was found to be promising. The idea was obtained by A. C. Fieldner, chief engineer of the Bureau of Mines experiment stations, while in Germany in 1924, where he was shown a practical application of the process, but no information was obtained as to definite chemical or mechanical processes. Because of the then pending American patent application by the German firm, we made no attempt to develop our findings further. Shortly after, a similar method of treatment was developed in the United States, and since that time we have devoted our attention entirely to mine drainage. This paper is a presentation of some general facts and information gathered during the past five years on coal-mine drainage.SCOPE OF WORKAt the time our work was begun there was such a diversity of opinion on the whole subject and apparently so little was accurately known, that it was decided to undertake a basic study from which (1) certain definite information might be evident, and (2) what might be considered side issues of the original investigation would be suggested for subsequent study.A stream in a district thought to be representative of those in low to average sulphur bituminous coal fields and another in a high sulpbur district were selected for study, A fair (weber of factors entered into the tentative selection of these streams, the chief ones being their accessibility and freedom from other industrial or domestic pollution, besides, of course, the presence of mine drainage in these streams."

In the group of minerals used in making this study, the cyanite is associated with quartz, mica, and feldspar in the schist. The amount of quartz is variable, but it is always an abundant mineral. Both large and small crystals of quartz occur in irregular masses, rarely ever showing crystal outline. Mica is of the clear and dark varieties, the larger crystals being dark as a rule, and the finer crystals of light color. The present mineralogical composition of the mina is rather variable, as most of the original biotite and muscovite have suffered alteration, and much secondary mioa is present as a result of alteration of the original mica and other minerals present, especially the larger cyanite crystals. A large part of the mica now found in the ore is chlorite, with varying amounts of Jefferisite and others, especially sericite. These are in the form of aggregates, or felt-like intergrowths filling the spaces between the quartz, cyanite, and feldspar.

The objective of this laboratory investigation was to develop a mattesmelting process for the recovery of copper from industrial smelter dusts . Experimentation was conducted on three samples of Cottrell precipitator dust from a northern Michigan smelter with variations in the following conditions : Temperature , charge composition , pelletization , and moisture content . Based on chemical analyses of the furnace slags , poorest recovery of copper was effected in smelting dry charges regardless of composition . Some improvement was noted with uniformly moistened charges and still more with pelletized (but dry) mixes , but best results were obtained from smelting moist , self - fluxing pellets . Under favorable conditions , experiments yielded furnace slags with an average copper content of only 0.15 percent , which is well below that of industrial copper reverberatory slags .

The Townsite mine, consisting of 40 acres in the town of Cardin, Okla., is in the center of a highly productive part of the Picher-Cardin district of the Tri-State zinc and lead field. Previous to the time of the work done by the Bureau of Mines, the property had been partly explored by churn drilling, and an area-of about 8 acres in the southwestern corner had been exploited by underground workings. The Bureau of Mines investigation had as its object the more intensive development of the northern part of the property where previous drilling had indicated a possible ore deposit of commercial grade. Churn drilling by the Bureau began in September 1942 and continued to February 1943. Twenty holes totaling 4,827 feet of bore were completed. Utilizing the information gained from these drill holes, the Weidman Mining Co., lessee of the tract, sank a shaft and proceeded to the exploitation of the indicated ore bodies.

The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.

An investigation of the production of iron in the blast furnace is obviously not an easy subject for research . Enough is known of the mechanical , thermal and chemical conditions existing inside the furnace to say certainly that they are complicated. Furnace operators have found that the process is sensitive to a number of known and to many unknown operating conditions . In order to form any conclusions of value , it seems necessary to collect a large amount of data taken with considerable care and accuracy. These facts make a blast furnace research difficult but not impossible . The most serious obstacle in attacking the problem comes from the fact that it is useless in the design and operation of the blast furnace to use the method of " trial and error , which has proved valuable in so many other industrial problems . The variables are so interrelated and are so dependent one on the other that the number of experimental combinations to be tried is enormous . There are certainly not less than twenty factors in furnace operation and design that are known to influence the results . This is apparent if it is remembered that a phrase like " size and shape of the furnace" includes height of the furnace , height , diameter and angle of the bosh , inwall batter , stockline diameter , and furnace volume ; and that a phrase like " chemical and physical properties of the fuels charged " includes size and shape of the lumps , density, porosity and strength of the coke , in addition to its chemical analysis . Let us suppose that we need choose for each of twenty factors one of two values , for example , suppose we must say only that the furnace shall be " tall " or " short , " that the bosh angle shall be " flat " OF "steep , that the ore shall be " coarse " or " fine , " or that the blast has to be "hot" or " cold , " the number of resulting combinations is more than one million . In putting twenty pennies on the table , either heads up or tails up, the number of permutations possible is the twentieth power of two , slightly more than one million. It is obvious , therefore , that some sort of mathematical relationship , a set of rules of thumb , laws , curves or the like , are needed . Whether the relationships , curves or formulas are derived from experiment , from theory, or from mere guess -work, makes no difference provided they agree with the known facts . If they do not agree with known facts , they are worthless no matter what their origin or how weighty the " authority" vouching for them. Few such relationships have appeared in blast- furnace literature , and it may be doubted whether such formulas can be discovered .

"An airborne dust study was undertaken at a Southwestern Pennsylvania underground bituminous coal mine by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries in 1964 for the purpose of making recommendations and requirements regarding compliance with health and safety aspects of The Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, approved by the legislature on July 17, 1961. The study was designed to accurately represent the airborne dust conditions of the subject mine. Sampling by midget impinger of specific worker locations throughout the mine was accomplished. Sample analyses yielded dust concentrations to mppcf, particle size determinations in cumulative per cent less than specified cut-off diameters, and determinations of free silica percentages in total dust samples. The data from this study is further analyzed, and the results are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, enacted in 1961, prompted a study of respirable coal mine dust by the Department of Mines and Minerals Industry in 1964. In recognition of their obligation for ensuring the health and safety of bituminous coal miners, the department set out to characterize the airborne dust of mines throughout the commonwealth. The purpose of the studies was to make recommendations and requirements for compliance with the law and for control of airborne coal mine dust in Pennsylvania mines.One such study was undertaken at an underground bituminous coal mine operating in the Pittsburgh Seam in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The study was desig11ed to sample specific worker locations throughout the mine site and characterize the respirable dust relative to each of them. A midget impinger was used to gather respirable range dust samples during an 8-hour shift. Continuous miner operator, roof bolter, stoper bolter, loading machine operator, shuttle car operator, gathering motorman, mainline motorman, and rotary dumper jobs were sampled underground. In addition, barge mover, coal sampler, fine coal operator, heavy media operator, and boiler room attendant occupations were sampled on the surface. The surface sampling was over a 71-hour shift because of UMWA contract provisions."

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational illness in the United States, with 30 million workers exposed to excessive noise levels [NIOSH 1996] every day. Of particular concern is the mining industry; which has the highest prevalence of hazardous noise exposure of any major industry sector [Tak et al. 2009] and is second only to the railroad industry in prevalence of work-ers reporting hearing difficulty [Tak and Calvert 2008]. This document is for operators, safety personnel, and mechanics in the mining industry who are not specialists in noise control engineering or acoustics. Evaluations of successful and unsuccessful attempts at controlling noise on several large, underground metal mining machines are detailed to illustrate the basic principles of noise control. Once personnel understand the guidelines and principles of noise control, they will be able to ¦evaluate the extent of a noise problem; ¦determine the best approach to the problem; and ¦apply the most appropriate solution. Because of the insidious nature of NIHL, it can go unnoticed until a considerable loss of hearing has occurred. In some cases, diagnosis is delayed because an exposed individual claims to have become accustomed to the noise. In reality, that person may have already suffered irreversible hearing loss. Humans can hear sounds in the frequency range from about 20 to 20,000 Hertz (Hz). Within this range, NIHL usually begins in the frequency region around 4,000?6,000 Hz, the upper levels of the speech region. The first noticeable symp-toms include difficulty understanding higher pitched voices, such as the voices of females and children, and difficulty understanding certain consonant sounds, which are primarily high frequency in nature. The extent of NIHL varies depending on the level and duration of noise exposure and on an individual?s susceptibility; despite having similar noise exposure, individuals can experience differing degrees of hearing loss, or none at all. NIHL is almost always preventable. To reduce or eliminate the possibility of NIHL, an individual?s noise environment must be analyzed and appropriate action taken to reduce noise exposure.

The objective of the research reported in this publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines was to devise a mineral dressing procedure that would concentrate zinc silicate minerals from certain deposits in southwestern Missouri. The best flotation results were obtained by batch laboratory flotation using sulfidizing agents and ethoxylated cocoamine. The flotation concentrate contained 70 percent of the zinc at a grade of 47.8 percent. Gravity concentration tests showed that 55 percent of the zinc could be recovered at a grade of 48.3 percent.

"The House/Senate Joint Conference Committee has instructed the Bureau of Mines to have the Advisory Committee on Mining and Mineral Resources Research review on an annual and simultaneous basis each generic mineral technology research center (GMTC). In order to accomplish that review promptly and uniformly, committee members have revised and approved an in-depth questionnaire. That document formed the basis of their review. The information provided by that questionnaire was an important factor in their recommendations concerning the future direction of the program; a presentation was made at the last National Plan Update.The comprehensive nature of the questionnaire and the scope of the information contained therein make it an excellent retrospective of the Center. Having a clear vision of where the Center has been and knowing where it is now will help guide it into the future. It is felt that such a detailed view of the Center's facilities and research program will be of value to Center personnel and Advisory Committee members.Each aspect of the questionnaire has been examined, answered in detail, and documented throughly. With the completed questionnaire as a guide, this volume examines the research program, Center personnel presently active on GMTC projects, number of graduate degrees granted with GMTC support, GMTC publications, degree of individual interaction, technology transfer, the reference center, GMTC equipment and facilities, and any envisioned plans for future research. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a review of the years 1984-1988, the first four years of the Center's operation."

As an aid to studies of grinding, a batch laboratory classifier and elutriator has been developed at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Metallurgical Field Office at Moscow, Idaho, in cooperation with the University of Idaho. It is designed for use in conjunction with other batch laboratory apparatus, such as ball mills and flotation machines. It is shown in Figure 1. Description and Operation of Batch Laboratory Classifier The classifying column is a cylinder 4 feet 2 inches long, of 5 3/4-inch inside diameter, and terminates at its top in a cone or funnel 18 inches in diameter at the overflow elevation. The pressure chamber is of the same diameter as the classifying column, and has a conical bottom; it is provided with two openings, one in the cylindrical portion through which water is admitted, and the other, a small drain hole, in the apex of the conical bottom. The two compartments are bolted together and communicate with each other through the medium of a constriction plate provided with 3/16-inch holes spaced 1/2 inch apart. Constriction plates having any other percentage of opening may be substituted as the needs demand water is admitted to the compartment below the constriction plate at constant pressure. The volume of eater admitted is controlled with a valve. It should be mentioned that the classifying column at the bottom, just above the constriction plate, is glass.

The Harding pegmatite dike is well known for the production of spodumene and lepidolite in the period 1920 to 1930. It attained greater prominence during the last war by being the largest producer of domestic tantalum ore from the rare mineral microlite. The deposit is believed to be the only proved reserve of tantalum ore in the United States today. In 1943 the main portion of a large tantalum-bearing zone in the Harding dike was developed by the Bureau of Mines with the assistance of the Federal Geological Survey. Analysis of this zone from 39 diamond drill holes and quarry exposures showed a large deposit containing 2 pounds of microlite per ton and 21 percent spodumene, In September 1948, the Bureau of Mines resumed development of the deposit with a view to extending the tantalum-bearing zone farther to the southwest or delimiting the ore body. Seven diamond-drill holes failed to penetrate the ore zone in its southwestward projection, Much of the following general information is summarized from the report on the first exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines by John H. Research on improving haulage truck safety, started by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is being continued by its successors. This two-part article reports the orientation of the renewed research efforts, beginning with an update on accident data analysis, the role of multiple causes in these accidents, and the search for practical methods for addressing the most important causes. Fatal haulage accidents most often involve loss of control or collisions caused by a variety of factors. Lost-time injuries most often involve sprains or strains to the back or multiple body areas, which can often be attributed to rough roads and the shocks of loading and unloading. Part II will describe research to reduce these accidents, including improved warning systems, shock isolation for drivers, encouraging seatbelt usage, and general improvements to system and task design.

Laboratory-scale research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a new process for treating electroplating and other wastes. Various acid and alkaline cyanide wastes were combined under controlled conditions to neutralize the wastes and to almost completely precipitate the metals and cyanides. The metals were subsequently recovered for recycling; the cyanides can also be easily recycled. The process was successfully used to treat the major types of electroplating and etching wastes, containing Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn, and to treat both concentrated and dilute wastes. The economic aspects of treating concentrated electroplating, etching, and anodizing wastes are especially attractive because of the low cost of mixing two wastes, the high value of the recovered metals, and the simplicity of the recovery procedures. The filtrates from the waste-plus-waste step were relatively harmless compared with the original wastes and met Public Health Service standards for free cyanide content. Free cyanide ions were not detected in most of the filtrates; the limit of detection was 0.03 ppm. Only small amounts of HCN were produced during the neutralization; the HCN was collected and neutralized.

"Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, various mines in the Poughkeepsie Gulch and Mineral Point mining districts were examined by C. R. Wilfley, W. R. Hamilton, .and N. E. Wvvlwy, Jr., Bureau Of 'Mines engineers, in July and August 1943, July 1944, and September 1945. In a subsequent report a proposal was made to evaluate this isolated area 'of some 15 square miles located in Ouray and San Juan Counties, Colo.Reconnaissance work in the area was begun in June 1946. Mapping and sampling were begun in July and was completed in Pougkeepsie Gulch and extended westward to include the Hendrick Gulch area of the east side of Ironton Park. Project work was recessed for the winter on October 15, 1946 after approximately 6 square miles of the Poughkeepsie Gulch,district been mapped and 801 samples had been taken.In this report the physical features, climate, and ore deposits districts are described, and a brief history of mining and production lead, zinc; and silver is given.The individual mines and prospects in, the area are described in detail.A list of patented claims and ownerships is given in appendix I, and analyses of samples are tabulated in appendix II.The San Juan preliminary project was directed by Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Mining Division and was supervised by William M. Traver, Jr., supervising engineer, Colorado Field. Office.Chemical analyses were made by the Salt Lake City laboratory under the direction of H.E. Peterson, chemist, and S. R. Zimmerley, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Metallurgical Division.Harold A. These are in the form of aggregates, or felt-like intergrowths filling the spaces between the quartz, cyanite, and feldspar. The feldspar is plagioclase probably mostly albite. It is white, possesses good cleavage, and is one of the hard brittle minerals of the rock. It alters to kaolin, and sericite, and more or less of these alteration minerals are present within the feldspar crystals but not separated from them. The cyanite is of two varieties, distinguished by their colors as blue and white cyanite. The blue color varies in intensity, being a pronounced blue in some crystals and paler in shade in others. Some crystals have been seen which posses the blue color in one-half of their mass and are pure white or clear in the other half. The purity of the cyanite is probably not affected by the color, but it is difficult to detect the white cyanite in the ore by macroscopic examination, so that great care has to be exercised in the selection of the ore in the field. Of the above minerals, cyanite is the heaviest, having a specific gravity of 3.6; none of the others approach it in specific gravity. The usual as opiates of cyanite in the mica schists are garnet, magnetite, and tourmaline, but these have not been noted in the group of minerals treated, and their absence is a point of great value in favor of this ore, as they possess high specific gravities and interfere in separation processes, and if not separated they are detrimental because of their easily fusible character. Small amounts of apatite and titanite have been noted, but not enough to cause trouble.
