A factorially designed, hydraulic fragmentation experiment using a high-pressure water jet was conducted on concrete blocks. Three levels of pressure, standoff distance, and impact angle and two levels of traverse time and surface condition were used. Three variables were measured: depth of penetration, volume of material removed, and width of slot. Three stepwise linear regression equations were developed from the jet parameters and the physical properties of the concrete. The three basic equations, describing the significant jet parameters and physical properties, were developed into 15 predictor equations, five for each variable investigated. Direct regression equations were also developed for each variable investigated to show the result of increasing or decreasing each significant variable. Energy efficiencies were developed for the experiment and for each significant factorial variable.

"It is well known that the lost coal left in the ground in mining, under such conditions that recovery is practically impossible, constitutes a large proportion of the coal in the beds worked. A recent estimate, in a paper on ""The World's Fuel Supply"" presented by Prof. L. P. Breckinridge, of Yale University, before the Annual Meeting of the. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, places the average loss in bituminous coal mining as one-third left in the ground.The bald statement that there is a loss of one ton of coal for every two recovered may seem to those not familiar with coal mining to imply inexcusable and wanton waste. Perhaps a better way of expression is in terms of total recovery rather than in terms of losses. Many mine superintendents and mine owners will readily concede that their total recovery may be only 60 to 75 per cent, but to state that they are wasting 25 to 40 per cent arouses antagonism. The suggestion is of willful waste, whereas the majority of the operators try to the best of their ability to get a high recovery under the adverse and complex conditions that confront them. These involve natural, commercial, and labor conditions, and the requirement in many cases of boundary pillars under railroads and buildings, which may be called for in the deed or lease, or in the absence of specific exemption in the deed or lease, the common law requirement that a surface owner is entitled to the support of the surface."

Many attempts have been made to develop methane detectors that will be safer and more accurate than the flame safety lamps used to detect methane in mines. The development has taken two general forms, namely: (1) Methane detectors, in which the evidence of methane depends entirely upon changes in the appearance of the detecting element, such as a flame or filament; (2) indicating methane detectors or those equipped with scales upon which the approximate percentage is definitely indicated. As an aid in the development of suitable detectors, the United States Bureau of Mines has assembled and published in its Schedule 8B a set of minimum requirements which tests and experience have shown desirable for methane detectors. Any manufacturer may submit his detector for inspection and tests leading to approval under this schedule.

Various chemicals, including compounds of copper and lead, were added to a mixture of No. 2 and No. 6 fuel oils that was fired in an experimental furnace. Tests were made to determine (1) the effectiveness of these chemicals in removing soot deposits on probes devised to simulate heat-transfer surfaces in boilers and (2) the effectiveness of the chemicals in preventing the deposition of soot on the probe surface. Test conditions were regulated so that the temperature of the products of combustion adjacent to the probes was in the range of 625° to 700° F. The clean-metal temperatures of the air-cooled probes were comparable with the water-tube temperatures in boilers operated at 40 to 100 p.s,i.g. The dosages of the fuel oil additives used in these tests were generally larger than those usually recommended for most proprietary compounds.

Manganese-oxide minerals occur in irregular pockets distributed through the residual clays of the Cartersville district, which lies 45 miles north-west of Atlanta in Bartow County, Ga. The district produces, or has produced, limonite, barite, specular hematite, ochre, ferruginous manganese, manganiferous iron are, as well as manganese. Bureau of Mines engineers have visited the district on three occasions - in December 1939, February 1941, and October 1942. During the visit of February 1941, 80 tons of samples of manganese-bearing clays were taken from seven properties for ore-dressing tests, which were conducted at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Rolla, Mo. The. October 1942 visit was for the purpose of reappraising the district in the light of knowledge gained from the ore-dressing studies and to prepare a plan for the district's development. Exploratory drilling was begun in March l943 and was continued until June 1945. Nine properties were explored that, roughly follow a line beginning near Cartersville and extend to a point 2 miles northeast of the village of White. The work consisted of bulldozer trenching, rotary bucket churn drilling, sampling, and analytical determinations. The manganese district is 18 miles long with a maximum width of 7 miles at Cartersville, which lies at the center of the district. The work of the Bureau was confined to the northern half of the district between Cartersville and Pine Log. The properties explored comprise but a small portion of the Potential producing area.

The current emphasis on energy needs in the United State sand abroad has placed an increased demand on the coal mining industry. The United States is fortunate to have abundant coal reserves. However, coal mining techniques and technology have not kept pace with the increased demand for coal. Consequently, coal mining in the United States continues to be one of the most hazardous industries. One of the daily hazards faced by coal miners is the sudden and unexpected occurrences of roof falls. The research program described in this final report focuses attention on the problems of unstable roof conditions in coal mines and describes prototype equipment which, with further development, has potential of being able to warn miners of impending roof falls in mines. Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Geophysical Instrumentation Systems Group was awarded a contract to develop and test a microseismic roof fall warning system based on general specifications derived from earlier Bureau of Mines research [1], [2]. During the first year of this two year effort (Contract H0242045) the electronic monitoring systems were de signed and built while the second year of the contract was devoted to equipment field testing in working coal mines.

"INTRODUCTION A soluble mediator has been described which is released from activated rabbit leukocytes and induces histamine secretion from rabbit platelets (Barbaro and Zvaifler, 1966; Siraganian and Osler, 1971). This factor has been isolated, characterized and named platelet activating factor, PAF (Bcnveniste et. al., 1972). PAF has since been chemically identified as l-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphocholine (Benveniste et. al., 1979; Demopoulous et. al., 1979).PAF is a lipid mediator of broad biological activity. It causes smooth muscle contraction, contraction of lung tissue and decreased FEV 1; while enhancing capillary permeability thus causing edema (Pinkard, 1983). In addition, PAF is a chemoattractant and can lead to inflammation.PAF has been reported to stimulate the release of lysosomal enzymes, leukotriene B,, and lipid metabolites from neutrophils (Smith et. al., 1983; Shaw et. al., 1981; Lin et. al., 1982; O'Flaherty et. al., 1984). The objective of the present investigation was to further characterize PAP-induced stimulation of granulocytes and to develop a bioassay, i.e. chemiluminescence, for screening PAF receptor antagonists and inhibitors of PAP-induced activation of granulocytes. The possible use of the chemiluminescence assay to monitor PAF synthesis by human granulocytes is also described.METHODSBlood was drawn from healthy volunteers into a blood storage bag containing CPD anticoagulant. Granulocytes were partially purified by dextran sedimentation and further purified by centrifugal elutriation as described previously (Jones et. al., 1980). Granulocytes obtained by this procedure were approximately 95 percent pure. The number of granulocytes in this preparation was determined using an electronic cell counter (Coulter Model Z1, Coulter Instrument Co., Hialeah, FL). Isolated granulocytes were used to monitor membrane potential, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide release, oxygen consumption, calcium uptake and, in some cases, chemiluminescence. Studies of PAF receptor antagonists were conducted using neutrophils isolated by density centrifugation. Briefly, blood was layered onto Mono-Poly-Resolving Medium (Flow Laboratories, McLean, VA) and centrifuged at 22 °C and 300 g for 30 min. Neutrophils collected from the second band of this gradient were at least 90 percent pure."

THE WORLDWIDE economic expansion that has characterized the first 3 years of the 1960's continued through 1964 and was reflected in North America by strength in the industrial economy of the United States, which again was dominant. Advances in production were recorded in virtually all industries, including the mineral industry; 1964 mineral production established a new high, 5.4 percent above the previous peak recorded in 1963. However, the percentage increase in value of North American mineral production was slightly below overall economic growth. For industry in general, consumer demand held firm throughout the year and overall commodity prices averaged 2 percent higher than in 1963. Wages and salary payments also were up. With the single exception of the dock strike in the United States, the year was free of serious labor troubles and unemployment in both Canada and the States was at a low level. Despite the Viet-Nam situation, relatively tranquil international relations contributed to the forward movement of North American business. Total gross national product (GNP) for Canada and United States, in current dollars, was estimated at US$672.2 billion; 6.8 percent above the previous year's figure. Combined national income in 1964 amounted to US$546.9 billion, which was nearly 7.0 percent more than in 1963. In 1964, gains were recorded in each of more than 50 metals, nonmetals, and fuels commodities that comprise the North American output. The greatest category increase was 13 percent in metals, which was in part attributable to the 14 percent rise to a new record in value of iron and steel in United States, a 29 percent higher value of Canadian iron ore and a 57 percent rise in Canadian zinc. Despite a moderate decline in prices of iron ore and iron and steel products, generally favorable markets and rising prices for metallic ores and metals were a stimulant to the metals industry. Nonmetallic materials, with a total value in excess of US$5.25 billion were 7.3 percent higher than in 1963. In connection with experimental work by the Bureau of Mines to determine effects of back pressure . on oil wells * , data were compiled on the engineering conditions in the oil field selected , in order to afford a more complete understanding of the wells tested , and to illustrate the extent to which underground conditions should be studied when making oil -field experiments of this nature . This report , containing the data mentioned, may be of interest to the oil industry , as it describes briefly the methods of operation employed in developing and exploiting shallow well territory .

Investigations for safety of electrically operated mine equipment, safety lamps, and gas detectors are made at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station in accordance with published regulations termed "schedules." These schedules are revised from time to time, not only to keep in step with the progress of the industry, but also to permit much freedom of design as possible without lowering standards of safety. Surface vibrations of ground, rock, and structures resulting from blasting or other sources are often measured with portable seismographs. These instruments are usually supported by a three-point mount or tripod which is simply placed on a horizontal surface on which vibration levels are to be measured. The rigid-body motion of a tripod-supported seismograph is considered from the point of view that there should be no slippage of the feet with respect to the surface and none of the feet should leave the surface as a result of imparted motion. From these studies the following design criteria are deduced which assure that the seismograph will respond accurately to vibration levels as large as 1/2 g.:3/ First, the coefficient of friction between the feet and the surface on which the instrument rests should be as large as possible, preferably approaching unity; second, the center of gravity of the instrument should be vertically above the centroid of the three-point mount; and third, the vertical distance between the center of gravity of the instrument and the centroid of the three points of contact with the surface should be less than the perpendicular distance between the centroid point and anyone of the three sides of the triangle formed by the three points of contact. Portable seismographs that do not satisfy these conditions should be clamped to the surface if vibration levels above 0.1 g. are to be recorded.

Although it is impossible to give definite final figures at this time on Nation-wide accident occurrence in 1933 , enough data are at hand to indicate that the progress in safety in the mining industry, which first became apparent in 1930 and was accentuated in 1931 and 1932 , was continued and much improved in 1933. This improvement was of considerable magnitude in mining both bituminous coal and anthracite but was not so great in other branches of the mining industry . While the volume of work done in all phases of mining increased in 1933 over that in 1932 , the exact amount of the increase is not yet known . Usually increased activity in mining is accompanied by even greater increase in the rate of occurrence of accidents to the workers , but happily it appears that this " rule " was not operating in 1933 --at least in the coal -mining industry .

The removal of silica from commercial iron oxide concentrates by dissolution with sodium hydroxide was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a means for producing supergrade concentrates. The effects of strength of solution, temperature, and digestion time on the extraction of silica were evaluated using eight iron oxide concentrates. Silica extraction from the eight concentrates was enhanced by autoclave leaching in the temperature range of 150° to 250° C and varied from 70 to 95 pct depending on the concentrate used. Superconcentrates containing less than 2 pct Si02 and more than 69 pct Fe were made only when magnetite concentrates were leached in the autoclave. The investigation showed that it is not difficult to obtain a supergrade product if the gangue is mainly quartz.

The Bureau of Mines studied the influence of carbonization method, temperature, and carrier gas on the composition of eight different low-temperature tars produced from a Colorado subbituminous coal. A fluidized bed was compared with an entrained bed, temperature was varied from 500° C to 650° C, and external heating using recycle gas as the carrier gas was compared with internal heating using oxygen-containing gas. The entrained bed yielded significantly more m-cresol and m-ethylphenol, indicating that thermodynamic equilibrium was more nearly approached in the system. Increasing the temperature greatly increased the yield of benzenes and naphthalenes, while paraffins, olefins, and total tar acids were reduced. Using oxygen in the carrier gas decreased the yield of low-boiling phenols and increased that of paraffins and olefins at 650° C.

The Bureau of Mines made bench-scale laboratory tests on a sample of typical Florida phosphate slime to determine alumina and phosphate extractions obtainable by agitation leaching, by baking and curing, and by a leach-electrolysis scheme. Recovery of mineral values from leached slime pulps by resin-in-pulp ion exchange contact and the reaction of the leached pulps to filtration, flocculation, and settling were also investigated. The best extractions of alumina and phosphate were obtained by (l) agitation leaching with sulfuric, hydrochloric, or nitric acid at an elevated temperature or (2) curing or baking the slime with sulfuric acid. Alumina extractions ranged from 80.8 to 90.0 percent and phosphate extractions ranged from 93.3 to 98.4 percent when the slime was leached at 90° C with sulfuric, hydrochloric, or nitric acids. Baking the slime with sulfuric acid at 200° C for 4 hours yielded an alumina extraction of 92.3 percent and a phosphate extraction of 97.0 percent, whereas curing with sulfuric acid at 100° C for 24 hours gave slightly higher alumina and phosphate extractions. Flocculation and settling properties of the slime were virtually unaffected in all cases. Filter area requirements, although somewhat improved as compared to untreated slime, remained relatively high. The lowest filter area requirement obtained was 44 square feet per ton of dry solids treated per day. Contacting leached slime pulps with ion exchange resins depleted the leach pulps of solubilized values; however, the filtration and settling properties of the barren pulps were unaffected. A leach-electrolysis scheme resulted in some concentration of solubilized phosphorus, but the method showed little promise of being commercially feasible.

A German coal planer was put in operation in the Keystone mine of the Eastern Associated Coal Corp. , Keystone , W. Va . , in August 1960 . At present , the planer is mining in the fourth panel . The blocks of coal mined were 340 by 1,900 feet in panel 1 , 340 by 1,660 feet in panel 2 , 590 by 1,900 feet in panel 3 , and panel 4 , currently being mined , is 590 by 1,900 feet . Almost one- half million tons of coal have been mined from these four panels . An 11 - man crew handles the complete planer operation and produces an average of 500 tons of clean coal per shift . Self - advancing hydraulic props are used to support the roof over the entire face . Roof control and action on all of the panels has been highly satisfactory . During periods of extreme pressure , some additional support is required in the tail entry where evidence of weight from the retreating longwall extends about 200 feet outby the face . The time lost from production by moving equipment between panels has been reduced steadily . The move from panel 3 to panel 4 required 5 days , but it is believed that even that time could be reduced .

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of mixing a compressed-air-generated foam with dried whole-grain silica sand to suppress dust in minerals processing plants. Dust at downstream transfer points was monitored with personal gravimetric samplers and with Real-Time Aerosol Monitors (RAM's) that were connected to strip' chart recorders. Results showed dust reductions of 80 to 90 pct on three separate occasions at two different plants. The mechanism by which foam suppresses dust is discussed, as are the constraints on the use of foam, which may include incompatibility of the foam with the mineral product, difficulty in controlling the foam generator, and cost.

The Petrographic Section of the Bureau of Mines, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg., annually examines thousands of minerals and rocks. Samples are received from mining, engineers, prospectors, and government agencies, both State and Federal. During the past 2 years certain uncommon minerals have been identified in the samples submitted. Eleven occurrences have been selected for reporting in detail. These selections were made because in most cases a new locality is involved. The data reported are the result of application of the latest techniques, and widely disseminated references concerning each mineral have been added for completeness. Several occurrences have been described by other investigators; in those cases new data have been supplied to supplement the already published information on these occurrences. No uranium-bearing minerals have been included; they will be treated in another paper. The Bureau of Mines does not make chemical analyses or assays for individuals or firms In direct competition with private laboratories. Mineral¬ogical examinations, however, are made for prospectors and the general public. Such examinations a call surface to determine whether the sample in question has possible commercial value. If it has apparent value, the sender is so informed, and suggestions as to its .Arc, development and marketing are offered. The latest scientific apparatus is available to aid in identification. The apparatus includes microscopes, both wide-field and polarizing, a Bunsen-type spectroscope for visual observation of the Zinc and band spectra of many elements, differential thermal apparatus for the examination of hydrous material, apparatus for cutting and mounting either thin sections for study in transmitted or polished surfaces for reflected-light studies, and a high-intensity magnetic separator for concentrating minerals according to their magnetic susceptibility. Also, available, but not an integral part of the Section, are several laboratory-type Geiger counters, a grating spectrograph, and X-ray diffraction apparatus. If need be, all of these tools may be employed to identify a mineral or rock.
