The potential for roof fails in underground mines remains a clear and present danger for mine workers An investigation of ground conditions in nearly 50 percent of the nation’s underground stone mines fold that the slate of roof stability is primarily determined in a limited and subjective manner. These large-opening mines with roof heights typically 7 m (23 ft) or more, make physical observation difficult. Although some mines use monitoring techniques to gain additional information an roof stability, this practice is usually short term and localized to address ground conditions in a particular section or part of the mine. A roof-fall hazard-assessment techniques was development based on engineering judgment acquired from extensive underground stone mine experience and on exanimation of the related literature. This technique utilizes observational processes to determine roof fall likelihood Case-study scenarios offer a realistic picture of model implementation. Providing the mine level decision-maker with an accurate assessment tool to ascertain the level of ground fall hazards is expected to reduce mint worker injuries and fatalities Moreover; the presences of danger can be overcome with a clear picture of quantified ground conditions.

"INTRODUCTION The increased use of coal as pulverized fuel has focused attention on the grindability of coal and on the necessity of evaluating this property by a method suitable for use in the usual coal-testing laboratory. Without some knowledge of how various coals behave in the grinding operation, that is, how their use affects mill capacity and power requirements, the selection of coals for pulverized-fuel plants cannot be made on the same critical basis used in selecting coals for other types of burning equipment. The grindability of a coal, serves principally as an indication of the mill capacity attainable in grinding it - not as a direct index of the total cost of grinding. Although the grindability of coal may play a minor role at some plants, it is a decidedly important factor where pulverizer capacity limits the ability to carry high loads.Purpose Standardized tests for determining the grindability of coal are relatively new, so that the information now available on the grindability of various coals is limited in comparison, for example, with that available on proximate analyses. Published information is restricted to determinations on many important Eastern coals by the Fuel Engineering Co. of New York, 4/ a bulletin giving the results of numerous tests by the Babcock and Wilcox Co. 5/, and a comprehensive report on. Alabama coals by the Bureau of Mines. 6/This report presents the results of grindability tests of 34 samples of coals from Illinois, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and British Columbia at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Seattle, Wash., in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington. In the future, as the laboratories of the Bureau make grindalility tests of other coals, additional reports will be issued."

Instrumental analysis has become an indispensable tool in research and production of the rare-earth elements. This development can be attributed mainly to a combination of two factors--the marked chemical similarity of the rare-earth elements, which excludes classical methods of analysis, and the speed and accuracy of instrumental-analysis techniques. With continued improvements in methods of producing high-purity rare-earth elements, keeping pace instrumentally is becoming much more difficult. Accordingly, greater emphasis is being placed on improving instrumental limits of detection and accuracy. The methods employed most frequently for determining impurities in rare-earth elements involve use of the optical-emission spectrograph (3, 4)4/ and the spectrophotometer (9). Although numerous X-ray-emission spectrographic methods (6-8) have been developed for analyzing rare earths, these techniques have not included detection of low-level impurities. This investigation was conducted to find the precision and accuracy of X-ray fluorescence in deter-mining impurities in rare-earth oxides in the 0.01-to 1.0-percent-concentration range.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 162,887-acre Mormon Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-161) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lincoln County, NV, about 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The study area had no mines or mining claims in 1985, and no mineral resources were identified within the study area, or at the Whitmore mine or Iron Blossom prospect near the study area. The alluvial fans around the southern boundary are staked with about 450 placer claims. Chemical analyses of samples indicate that some limestone in the study area is suitable for manufacturing cement or for agricultural purposes but the limestone is distant from markets and therefore not economic in the foreseeable future. The study area is blanketed with oil and gas leases, but no known productive horizons were identified.

This paper describing the methods and costs of mining at the Hartley-Grantham mine of the Century Zinc Co. in the Tri-State Lead and Zinc district is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines can mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. LOCATION, HISTORY, AND GEOLOGY The Hartley-Grantham Mine is located just outside the city limits of Baxter Springs, Kans., as shown in Figure 1. A plan of the mine is given in Figure 2, and Figure is a cross section through A - A of Figure 2.

Not long after electrically driven equipment was introduced into coal mines it became apparent that the spark-producing parts, such as controllers and motors, required safeguards to prevent the ignition of mine gas that might come into their vicinity. Many of the early designs attempted to provide protective enclosures having ventila¬tion and relief for pressures if ignition should occur within. The principal feature of the Davy safety lamp, namely, the wire gauze, was employed widely for this purpose. Other devices were developed to reduce the temperature of products of combustion escaping through the protected openings to a value below that which would cause ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres. Although many such devices performed their intended function satisfactorily under laboratory conditions they were not so satisfac¬tory when subjected to the rigorous conditions encountered under¬ground. Corrosion, mishandling, and accumulations of grease and dirt reduced or destroyed their protective qualities after a period of service in the mines. In the United States this has led to abandon¬ment of special devices in favor of what is called " total enclosure " which means that no regular provision is made for ventilation and release of pressure but rather that the housings or enclosures are built strong enough to withstand the explosion pressures without rupture. As a further protection the joints usually are made of broad, closely fitting surfaces. It is impractical to make such joints absolutely gastight in ordinary machine practice when provision must be made for partial or complete disassembly to facilitate ad¬justments and repairs. Therefore, when an explosion occurs within such enclosures flames may escape through the joints. If the latter are broad enough and not separated too widely, however, the flames will be cooled by contact with the metal surfaces (flanges) of the joints, by rapid expansion, or by both cooling and expansion, with the result that an explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure will not be ignited. PURPOSE: Evaluate practical technological advances in hearing protective devices for use in different mining environments. RESEARCH SUMMARY: Previous NIOSH research shows that miners develop hearing loss much more quickly than nonoccupationally noise-exposed individuals. Also, miners experience a greater severity of hearing loss than would be expected for nonoccupational noise-exposed persons of the same age and sex. As described in the National Occupational Research Agenda, problems created by occupational hearing loss include (1) the reduced quality of life due to social isolation and unrelenting tinnitus, (2) impaired communication with family members, the public, and coworkers,(3) a diminished ability to monitor the work environment (e.g., warning signals, equipment sounds, etc.), (4) lost productivity and increased accidents resulting from impaired communication and isolation, and (5) expenses for workers? compensation and hearing aids.

The Bureau of Mines sampled a gold-bearing schist series 50 miles east of Nome near Bluff, a dormant mining camp on the southern shore of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Gold is unevenly distributed through a section of a schist series that extends from the coast northward 4,500 feet. In this section the schists dip westward 20 to 38 degrees and have an outcrop width of about 1,000 feet and a normal width of about 500 feet. An intensely fractured zone within the schists averages 0.015 to 0.017 ounce of gold and 0.03 to 0.05 ounce of silver per ton for outcrop widths of 200 to almost 500 feet. The grade of the remainder of the schist series ranges downward to scant traces. Gold eroded from these schists collected in solution channels in metalimestones to form the Daniels Creek placers, which also extend from the beach southward under the sea for an unknown distance. The lode sources of the gold placers elsewhere in the southern Seward Peninsula may be similar schists that occupy a similar position in the metasedimentary series.

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates methane emissions from U.S. bituminous coal mines with daily emission rates of at least 100,000 cfd according to States, counties, and coalbeds. Most of the methane emitted is from mines in the Appalachian States. Total daily emissionin 1975 was 216.3 MMcfd, compared with 227.0 MMcfd in 1971 and 214.5 MMcfd in 1973. Thirty counties in nine States had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more, These emitted 93 percent of the total methane. The highest emissions were from Monongalia County, W. Va,, which accounted for 18.9 percent of the total. This was followed by Marion County, W. Va., 9.6 percent; Buchanan County, Va., 8.5 percent; Jefferson County, Ala., 6.1 percent; and Washington County, Pa., 5.9 percent. The Pittsburgh coalbed emitted 45.7 percent of the total methane, followed by the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed with 12.9 percent. The report lists 196 mines, of which 60 had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. Included in this compilation are the identification and thickness of the coalbed, methane emission, coal production and ventilation rates, number of drifts, shafts, and slopes used for ventilation purposes, shaft depth, age of mine, and gas-to-coal ratio.

The Bureau of Mines has begun a study of the copper resources of the Cascade Mountains of Washington. The program includes reconnaissance of mineralized areas and examination and occasionally limited exploration of deposits that are considered characteristic of an area. The Bureau of Mines believes that published information may assist industry in searching for new sources of copper. The Miners Queen is one of a few Cascade Mountain deposits selected for prelim¬inary exploration. The investigation was not planned to delineate the ore body. A diamond-drilling program was carried out at the Miners Queen mine in the summer of 1955. Five diamond-drill holes were completed, totaling 628 feet. Two 35-foot shafts were dewatered, and all accessible underground and surface workings were examined.

From 1886, the first year shipments were recorded, until 1939, the Leadville district produced over 3,500,000 long tons of manganiferous ore. Of this total, metallurgical-type ores comprised 27 percent and manganiferous iron ores suitable for fluxing in lead smelters made up 73 percent. In 1939, the Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic minerals investigative program being conducted at the time, requested the Mineral Industries Survey Section of the Mining Division to make a comprehensive study of the manganese resources of the Leadville area. This investigation, owing to the caved and flooded condition of the underground mine workings, was necessarily confined to a study of old maps, production records, and geological reports, and the results were published as an Information Circular in July 1940.

An evaluation was made to determine the economics of utilizing waste fluosilicic acid for production of (1) calcium fluoride, and (2) anhydrous hydro-gen fluoride. Two versions of each process were considered and compared. The evaluation showed that both products could be produced and marketed competitively. Lowest estimated product sales prices required to yield a 25-percent return on investment before taxes (discounted cash flow basis) was $339.34 per ton of hydrogen fluoride and $48.64 per ton of calcium fluoride.

An apparatus for determining trace impurities in Grade-A helium by mass spectrometer methods was designed and built by the Federal Bureau of Mines. Grade-A is the designation for helium commercially produced by the Bureau. Its nominal purity is 99.995 percent. The device, following a suggestion by Deaton, concentrates the impurities in the helium by freezing them out in a coil-and-trap assembly cooled by liquid helium. A known volume of helium is passed through the trap, the concentration ratio determined, and samples of the concentrated impurities are analyzed by mass spectrometer methods. The apparatus has been in service for approximately 20 months and has satisfactorily met all requirements. Over 200 analyses were made of helium contained in conventional cylinders, obtained from the Amarillo, Exell, Otis, and Navajo Helium Plants, during the 6-month period ending March I, 1959. Total impurity concentrations, in parts per million, were as follows: Amarillo, 19.1; Exell, 17.1; Otis, 11.3; and Navajo, 6.6. Neon and nitrogen were the major impurities. Complete data are shown in table 4 in the body of this report.

The Waukon iron deposit comprises about 210 acres situated 2-1/2 miles north of Waukon, in Allamakee County, northeastern Iowa. The deposits have been exploited intermittently since 1899 and have produced about 67,000 tons of concentrated iron ore. From January to May 1943, the Bureau of Mines investigated the deposit to determine the extent of the ore-bearing material and its amenability to concentration, Seventy-one test pits were sunk. Those that indicated are of a grade high enough to warrant concentration tests were sampled. Average grade of ore was indicated to be 37.02 percent iron and 27.78 percent silica on a dry basis. Beneficiation tests indicated that the percentage of recovery might be relatively low.

Since December 10, 1945, the Mount Weather Branch, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, has been maintaining detailed performance and cost records on the diamond coring bits used throughout the United States by the Bureau of Mince. Figure 1 is a copy of a typical master record sheet showing the scope and type of information recorded for each bit. It is the intention of the Bureau of Mines to issue analytical reports covering the effects of diamond size and quality on the cost of core drilling in different rocks as the information on a significant number of bits used in any one type of rock is accumulated. This report is the first of such a proposed series and is based on the diamond loss and bit costs incurred in the use of 539 AX bits in coring operations on 10 different projects involving 6,097 feet of drilling in gneiss. The 10 projects were located in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey (fig. 2). As a result of the information accumulated on the use of diamond-coring bits in drilling in gneiss, it has been found that the type of bit, the matrix, the percent of core recovered, and the size and quality of diamonds used have a definite effect on the cost of bits per foot drilled.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has determined the distribution of forms of sulfur for several lignites and gasification chars and noted the changes induced by the gasification process . A method was adopted for quantitatively determining sulfide sulfur that was found to be present in the chars , although absent in the lignites . Changes in the behavior and distribution of sulfur forms were further investigated concerning the ashing of lignites and chars under standard conditions , as well as at various temperatures , and the determination of volatile matter applied to both chars and lignites . The authors concluded that the first and greatest change in the form of sulfur present in natural lignite , upon heat treatment , resulted from the reduction of pyritic and sulfate sulfur to sulfide . Organically - bound sulfur originally present is less reactive , but largely disappears on strong ignition . An appreciable part of the sulfur content of natural lignite is fixed in the char as sulfide and in the ash as water - soluble sulfate and will affect the summation of constituents , to a greater or lesser degree , in reporting the ultimate analysis of a lignite or char .
