The objectives of this contract were to determine the amount, size, and deposition of float coal dust (74 x 10 microns) generated during the mining and transporting of coal in underground U.S. mining operations. Rock dust distributed by trickle dusters was also sampled. In addition to four belt-transfer points, two continuous and two conventional mining sections were sampled at five mines located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Illinois. Float-dust samples were collected on deposition pans; total airborne dust was collected with MSA Model C personal samplers equipped with Unico filter casettes; Andersen cascade impactors provided relative size distributions of the samples. Production, airflow, and water flow were monitored to examine their effect on dust levels.

This work explores application of a double alkaline leach method to extraction of alumina from Oregon ferruginous bauxitic materials. The process recovers a greater proportion of alumina from high-silica ores than is possible by a conventional single-leach method. This recovery is accomplished by calcining the ore, removing reactive silica in a preliminary dilute caustic soda leach, and then applying a second leach to dissolve alumina. Ores containing up to 15 percent Si~) 35 percent AI;:) Os, and 30 percent Os were examined. Under conditions of treatment established by experimentation, more than BO-percent alumina extraction was demonstrated. When and if conditions demand the use of low-grade materials, the double-leach process is capable of providing millions of tons of alumina from Oregon ferruginous bauxite.

An investigation was undertaken to examine the feasibility of employing low- temperature nonaqueous baths for electrodepositing some of the refractory metals of the ferroalloy group . To date , such metals as tungsten , molybdenum , and vanadium have been produced only by high - temperature processes that are technically difficult and sometimes cumbersome in operation . Deposition studies were performed in a wide variety of organic solvents , including amides , ammonia derivatives , ketones , polyhydroxy alcohols , and ethers . Compounds prepared and used as solutes included the chloride and bromide salts of vanadium , tungsten , and molybdenum . Studies were conducted over a temperature range of 20 ° to 200 ° C under inert atmosphere . Conductivity and current potential data were obtained for all baths that contained reasonable solute concentrations . Qualitative solubility data were obtained for compounds of ferroalloy metals in a variety of solvents . In general , all solutes showed low solubility in ethers and ketones but reasonable solubility ( in excess of 20 grams per liter ) in alcohols , amides , and ammonia derivatives . No successful metallic deposits that would encourage further study were obtained with any of the systems that were examined .

The Lynch Creek beryllium-tungsten prospect was investigated as part of the domestic beryllium resource studies by the Bureau of Mines. This prospect is in the Birch Creek mining district, Lander County, Nev., 9 airline miles south of Austin. A tungsten mine was operated intermittently from 1952 to 1957. Beryl was identified in the pegmatite dikes in 1960, and the lode claims were relocated. No beryl has been produced. Rocks in the area are Paleozoic sediments2 cut by pegmatite and aplite dikes and quartz stringers. Beryl occurs in random pockets, as disseminations throughout the dikes, and in occasional pockets in the quartz stringers.

When you get up to the face you see that Mo, the remote control continuous miner operator, has rounded off the left inby corner in order to make his first cuts in the right hand rib. Now, he has squared around enough so that you and Red, the miner helper, can set some posts on the corner. The two of you set posts along the left inby rib of #5 entry while the shuttle car operator waits. You are in a tight spot when Mo decides to start mining. You must decide where the best place is to stand for safety and to be out of the way.

Contact with trolley wire in the mines of the United States has taken a considerable toll of life throughout the years that trolley locomotives have been employed as a means of' transportation. A study3/ of the records over a 15-year period for one State alone showed that, of 98 fatalities resulting from contacts with electrical circuits and equipment, 75 were caused by direct or indirect contact with unguarded trolley wire in coal mines. The law relating to guarding trolley wires in the mines of this particular State, as amended in 1935, reads in part as follows: "All trolley wires carrying 220 volts or more, and less than six feet six inches above top of rail, must be guarded at all points under which men and animals are required to pass***,'" The natural conclusion to be drawn from such records is that lack' of guards or shields must be held responsible for these fatalities. As a preventive measure, it has been advocated that every foot of trolley wire in mines should be guarded. Although some such drastic steps may appear to be amply justified, closer examination of the records nor this and other coal-mining States shows that absence of guards is not entirely responsible; but rather that other factors, such as carelessness and neglect it the observance of certain well-established simple rules concerning installation and location of trolley wires, also are responsible. In other words, if trolley wire is installed carelessly and its maintenance is neglected, it should not be expected that the mere installation of guards will overcome such carelessness and neglect. This publication discusses Various types of guards that have been used in Coal and metal mines of this country, together with related steps bearing upon the problem of 'preventing shock and fatalities from contacts with trolley wire. The material herein contained is taken largely from Information Circular 6577,4/ now out of print, and has been revised to include some types of guards that have been used in metal mines, together with a discussion of guard materials not covered in that publication.

This study was undertaken to make a comparison between the cost of mining coal under roof bolt and under conventional timber methods of roof support. Studies were made at 14 mines in Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, and northern and southern West Virginia. At each mine data were obtained for sections of the mine where the physical conditions, mining equipment, and mining systems were similar. Coal, recognized as one of the basic industrial fuels, is very competitive with other fuels, and management, in order to protect and enlarge its market, must be continually alert to find more efficient methods of production. Continuous production of coal is desired by all operators but never obtained. In mechanized mining the performance and production vary with operating time, which can be interrupted by many variable factors, such as condition of the roof, method of roof support, condition of equipment, water, ventilation, power, transportation, efficiency of operating crew, and supervision.

The mine and treatment plant of the Teziutlan, unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., are located at Aire Libre, in the District of Teziutlan, near the northwest edge of the State of Pueblo, Republic of Mexico. The property is leased from the Teziutlan Copper Co. The town of Teziutlan is the terminus of a branch railroad starting from Oriental Junction or the Mexico-Jalapa-Veracruz narrow-gage system of the National Railways of Mexico. A branch line 18 km in length from Teziutlan to Aire Libre belongs to the Teziutlan Copper Co. and is leased and operated in conjunction with the mine.

Based on earlier tests that showed steel to be much more likely to cause frictional ignition than tungsten carbide, the Bureau of Mines redesigned coal-cutting bits to reduce the hazard of face ignitions. Two bit designs--a mushroom-shaped bit with a conical shank and a dove-tail bit with a rectangular shank--are described, as well as bit wear tests conducted in the laboratory and in an operating coal mine. In laboratory tests, for 1/8-, 1/4-, and 1/2-in-deep cuts and cutting speeds of 280, 500, and 660 ft/min, the mushroom bit had significantly longer tip wear life than the conventional bit; the dovetail bit was also superior to the conventional bit. Results of in-mine tests on the mushroom bit agree well with laboratory results. In-mine tests of the dovetail bit are underway.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a new type of scrubber (dust collector) and ventilation system built into the auger support frame (boom) of a Jeffrey 120L continuous mining machine. With this twin scrubber arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Each scrubber includes a 2,500-cfm fan, a flooded fibrous-bed scrubber panel, and a water droplet eliminator. The system was designed for minimum size and adds only a few inches to machine height. Exhaust duct design allows flexibility with various airflow configurations to suit both blowing and exhaust fare ventilation systems and brattice distances ranging up to 20 feet. Full-scale tests with exhaust ventilation were conducted at a Mine Safety and Health Administration surface facility at Bruceton, Pa., to determine the scrubbers' methane dilution capability. Several configurations of the twin scrubber-ventilation system produced striking improvements in face methane dilution when compared with conventional systems.

The necessity for measuring radiation dose is encountered in studying both the beneficial and damaging effects of ionizing radiation on materials . It is also necessary to know the radiation dose absorbed by the reactants in order to evaluate the efficiency of reactions or processes that are promoted by radiation . Thus , a significant effort was made at the Albany cobalt 60 facility to investigate techniques by which the exposure radiation dose can be determined . Methods including ferrous sulfate , ceric sulfate , and methyl methacrylate chemical dosimeters , ion chamber dosimetry , and an absolute radiation calorimeter were investigated . Isodose curves were constructed for several standard source configurations using the dosimetry techniques which were investigated .

High extractions of lead, gold, and silver resulted from treatment of an oxidized, arsenical refractory ore by chloride volatilization. The ore was roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C. for 1 hour. The chloridizing reagent was 300 pounds of CaC12?2H20 per ton of ore. Ninety-nine percent of the lead, 98 percent of the gold, and 96 percent of the silver, and only 6 percent of the arsenic, were volatilized. These results indicated that a satisfactory method could be developed for treating this type of ore. Recovery and separation of the volatilized values and developing metallurgical and operating data for this process require further investigation on a more extensive scale. Tests by gravity concentration, flotation, and cyanide leaching did not give satisfactory results.

At this point, you decide to take your crew and travel on foot in the belt entry that is on a neutral split of air. After traveling about 6 crosscuts in the belt entry, you encounter heavy smoke at which time you and your crew don your person-wearable SCSRs (PWSCSR). After donning the apparatus, you and your crew continue traveling outby in the belt entry. Near the mouth of the section, one miner in the group starts to have trouble breathing from his SCSR. Because breathing resistance is increasing with the length of time the apparatus is worn, the miner is "outbreathing" the device since his oxygen requirements are greater that what the PWSCSR can supply. The 10-mm Dorr-Oliver cyclone has been widely used as a personal sampler for size selective sampling of particles within the respirable range (Dp < 10 gm). Because of their inertia, the particles are unable to follow the swirling flow (outer vortex) within the cyclone. The particles migrate to the bottom of the cyclone, depending on their size, and get trapped into the inner vortex which leads to an eventual blow-off from the top of the cyclone. By measuring the size distribution of the particles in the free stream and in the collected sample, the aspiration efficiency of the cyclone can be calculated. Velocity difference between the free stream and sampling velocity. Inlet orientation, particle impaction and deposition, particle inertia and free stream turbulence result in the departure of the aspiration efficiency from unity and this, in turn, leads to inlet bias. Although the effect of inlet bias on sampling efficiency has been investigated in past, the results lack detailed information and show only some general trend. In this effort, a systematic, in-depth experimental work on the effect of inlet bias on the sampling efficiency has been undertaken using non-intrusive Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA), Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) and impactors.

The disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has been a long-continuing problem to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. .An impartial appraisal of conditions pertaining to the problem of brine disposal lead to the conclusion that study of the technical considerations, with proper weight given to the economic and social factors, is the most desirable approach to this problem . Brine disposal is a problem of such magnitude 1n certain areas in the State of Kansas that in August 1934 a cooperative agreement w s made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the U. S. Bureau of Mines for a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal.

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. Sodium aluminate is the principal aluminum compound formed in the sinters prepared by the lime - soda sinter process for recovering aluminum from silicate source materials . The properties and characteristics of this compound were studied to improve the efficiency of the process . Crystalline sodium aluminate was prepared by sintering stoichiometric quantities of soda ash and calcined alumina for 1 hour at 1,250 ° C. The extent of aluminum extraction from sodium aluminate was determined in water and in solutions of NaOH and Na₂ CO3 . Nearly complete extraction of aluminum from sodium aluminate was achieved only in solutions containing free NaOH in excess of that supplied by the salt through hydrolysis . About 42.2 to 68.8 percent of the aluminum was extracted in water or in solutions of Na₂ CO . The precipitation of alumina trihydrate from sodium aluminate solutions was shown to be part of a continuous , reversible reaction according to the equation Al (OH ) A1 (OH )3 + OHThe reverse reaction dissolves alumina trihydrate in NaOH solutions to produce sodium aluminate . Approximate equilibrium concentrations were determined for the reaction at 30° , 50 ° , and 70 ° C. False apparent equilibrium conditions for the dissolution reaction appear when only a small excess of alumina trihydrate is present in the NaOH solutions . A large excess of alumina trihydrate must be present before the true equilibrium point is assured . The engineering significance of the data is summarized , showing controls that should be exercised for a successful and efficient process .
