"This paper is based on the results of work conducted of the bureau's experiment station at Berkeley, Calif., in connection with the investigation of properties and methods of utilizing Western magnesite. The experiments described herein were made under the supervision of the writer, by W. C. Riddell and E. H. Delius, of the station's staff.In calcining magnesite for the production of magnesium oxide to be used in the preparation of oxychloride cement, the calcium carbonate present in the original rock may remain unchanged or appear in the finished product, either as CaO, or in combination with SiO2, A12O3, etc. As there is reason to believe that free CaO may have an effect on the behavior of caustic magnesia in the cement reaction, it is desirable to have a method for the determination of the relatively small amounts of free CO in the presence of a large quantity of MgO.The extraction of the free CaO with water free from CO2 at once suggests itself as a possible method. Lead-silver deposits in the Omilak area, on the western slopes of the Darby Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons, as a part of the U.S. Department of Interior's continuing program for the development of Alaska's resources. The Omilak area was the scene of early day prospecting and mining activity. The Omilak mine, which operated from 1881 to 1890, was the second producing lode mine in Alaska; the first was a small gold mine near Sitka. Several hundred tons of ore were produced at the Omilak mina; as an indication of grade, 41 tons shipped from Omilak in 1889 contained 75 percent lead and 142 ounces of silver per ton. A prominent, nearby occurrence of lead-silver minerals, found but not explored during this period, has since become known as the Foster prospect. Subsequent exploration of this prospect revealed an abundance of massive galena occurring on an outcrop and as float scattered through limestone talus. Evidence of lead deposition, together with the generally high silver content of lead ores previously shipped from the district, indicated that deposits might be found which would be commercially valuable even in this remote area. To investigate the possibility, the Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance of the Omilak area and did bulldozer trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling at the roster prospect. Data resulting from the investigation are presented in detail in this report and are summarized in the following paragraphs.

Research work in the Bureau of Mines cryogenic laboratory requires the use of high-sensitivity galvanometers of the d'Arsonval type in a building that is subject to unusually severe vibrations. A modified form of the galvanometer suspension described by Julius' has damped the vibrations so successfully that a short note concerning it is thought to be desirable. The laboratory is on the site of the Amarillo helium plant near a building that houses gas engines of from 180 to 250 hp driving compressors and electric generators. The distances from the galvanometers to the individual engines range from about 80 to 180 feet. The subsoil, consisting of black clay loam, transmits the impulses without much damping. The usual methods of protecting galvanometers from vibration were tried and proved fruitless. A Julius suspension purchased on the market was carefully installed in the hope that it would overcome the difficulty, but the conditions were too severe even for this elaborate arrangement. Several modifications of the original Julius suspension, which were then introduced, resulted in almost complete elimination of all vibrational effects. These modifications were suggested by careful study of the original idea embraced in the Julius construction. They were designed to give further constraint to motion in any direction other than that parallel to a line from the point of support through the center of gravity of the suspension, This was accomplished by making the suspended frame more rigid and by improving the means of adjusting each of the supporting wires to the same degree, thereby transmitting any impulse symmetrically through the three wires. The result was a suspension that is more effective, particularly for severe vibration, than the form described by Julius; also, it is believed to have advantages in stability, simplicity, and ease of adjustment over the few suspensions for this type of service that the author has found described in the literature.

PRODUCTION of carbon black decreased 4 percent in 1961. Output in the major producing States of Texas and Louisiana decreased 1 percent and 8 percent, respectively. Production of channel black continued downward, declining 10 percent in 1961 compared with 9 percent in 1960. Furnace black production also decreased 3 percent from 1960. Total domestic sales, however, increased 2 percent, Sales to most major consumers increased, but sales to the ink industry decreased 10 percent. Producer's stocks decreased 5,083,000 pounds during the year. Exports decreased 4 percent. SCOPE OF REPORT Carbon black is a very pure grade of quasi-graphitic carbon; particle diameters range from 50 to 5,000 angstrom units. Annual reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines by operators of all commercial plants in the United States.

This Bureau of Mines report is the second of a series of process evaluations planned to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. Included in these evaluations are recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The processes considered in this report are designed to extract alumina as aluminum chloride from calcined clay with 20 percent hydrochloric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. Iron is removed by one of the following processes: Isopropyl ether extraction, in which iron chloride is extracted before decomposing the aluminum chloride; gas precipitation, in which the aluminum chloride is precipitated with hydrogen chloride while leaving the iron chloride in solution; gas precipitation-isopropyl ether extraction, in which the aluminum chloride from precipitation is extracted with isopropyl ether, if necessary; caustic purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a modified Bayer operation; or sinter purification, in which a crude alumina is produced and then purified by a lime-soda sinter operation. The need for a simple, very sensitive, and accurate method for the determination of benzene in blood and urine was evident throughout a recent study of chronic benzene (C6H6) poisoning conducted cooperatively by the United States Bureau of Mines, The Barrett Company, and the producers of benzene. A combustion method which will be described in a later publication, end a previously described5/ adaptation of Smyth's method were developed and used during that investigation. The adaptation of Smyth's method gave satisfactory results when dealing with exposure conditions that produced chronic poisoning in a comparatively few days, but it was time-consuming and lacked the accuracy necessary for a study of the absorption, distribution, and fate of benzene in the body during exposure to threshold concentrations of benzene vapor in air. The combustion procedure was satisfactory from the standpoint of sensitivity but was cumbersome, intricate, time-consuming, and required the use of special and somewhat expensive physical and. chemical apparatus. Following the termination of this study of chronic poisoning, possibilities for developing better methods occurred, and these have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines with the aid of Relief Works Division personnel. A microcolorimetric method for the determination of benzene in air has been described recently.6/ The present report deals with the adaptation of this new colorimetric method to the determination

The two volumes of this report summarize the noise control work performed by BBN on a rail personnel carrier operated in coal mines. Volume I of the report - submitted November 1977 - describes the aboveground work performed to identify the noise sources, design, fabricate, and install the treatments, and evaluate the treatments through noise and vibration tests. The current volume (II)-describes the underground work conducted by BBN to determine the deterioration, if any, of the treatments when the vehicle is operated normally in a mine. There were no significant changes in the acoustical performance or mechanical integrity of the treatments at the end of a three-month period.

Work on the Abbott-quicksilver property was part of the general program of th~ Bureau of Mines in its investigation of domestic mineral resources, which are essential to national defense or industry and of which our present or probable future supplies are inadequate. The mine was discovered in 1862, and the intermittent production up to 1947 has totaled around 37,500 flasks of quicksilver. Output has come from ore shoots formed in the vicinity of fault intersections in a narrow zone composed of lenses of silicified serpentine breccia interbedded with shale. Work by the Bureau included the drilling of six diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,845 feet. Several possible ore zones were intersected by the drill holes. Field work was begun in April 1948 and concluded in October of the same year. This report gives detailed results of the diamond drilling and a brief account of the history and description of the ore deposits.

During 1990-1999, a total of 458 fires occurred in all coal mining categories; 157 of those fires caused 164 injuries and 2 fatalities. The greatest number of fues and fire injuries occurred at surface mines, whch also had the highest risk rate values. A total of 66 fuefighting interventions were required. Of these, there were 25 mine rescue team interventions in underground mines, including 5 mobile equipment firefighting interventions, and 41 fire brigade and fire department interventions at all surface operations, including 19 mobile equipment interventions. In all, 50 fires destroyed or heavily damaged equipment (including 16 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of other firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. A total of 1 14 fires were detected late by smoke, and 42 fires were not detected.

Synthesis of high - Btu gas , using the Fischer - Tropsch reaction was investigated in a tube - wall reactor of 2 - inch steel . The catalyst was carbonexpanded iron ( CEI ) , formed on the walls of a steel reactor by exposing the reactor to 1H₂ + 100 synthesis gas under certain conditions . Advantages to be gained from successful development of the CEI - coated tube- wall reactor are elimination of catalyst plant and catalyst handling and charging operations , high- temperature operation , and a relatively low- cost , reactor -heat recovery system . In one test ( TW- 8 ) in which the reactor was filled with CEI , the reactor was operated for 1,910 hours before the test was stopped because of excessive pressure drop caused by carbon deposition . The pressure drop was satisfactory for 1,000 hours of operation at an hourly space velocity of 300 , but it increased rapidly at space velocities of 600 and 1,000 . When operated at a space velocity of 300 , with a ratio of 1 to 1 recycle at 534 ° C , a conversion of 72 percent of the 3H + 100 synthesis gas was achieved . The product gas had a heating value of about 610 Btu per cubic foot and could be suitably upgraded to 900 - Btu gas by subsequent use of a nickel catalyst . CEI did not operate effectively as a film catalyst under conditions of generation tried in this study . Generally , operation of the 2 - inch reactor with CEI catalyst was unsatisfactory because of poor reproducibility of the activation step and poor temperature control resulting in high- operating temperatures and eventual plugging of the reactor . Tests using CEI in fixed , packed beds suggest that the most likely application for CEI in producing high - Btu gas would be a moving - bed reactor , where sufficient bed movement and heat removal are provided to prevent plugging .

This report on properties of commercial motor fuels is the twelfth in a series made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.V The -present report, covering the summer of 1941, presents analytical data for 1,857 samples, representing the products of approximately 135 companies. As in previous surveys, these companies include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted, and these data are published exactly as they were received. Conforming to previous surveys, the data cover three groups of samples -- regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines -- and each group has been aver aged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, are as follows: Regular price, 1,010 samples, 291 items, and 86 brands; premium price, 577 samples, 263 items, and 78 brands; third-grade gasoline, 270 samples 159 items, and 74 brands. The meanings of these terms as used in the surveys are as follows: Sample: The individual supply of gasoline obtained at the filling station and analyzed in the laboratory.

The Artillery Peak manganese ores , from one of the largest known manganese deposits in the United States , present a difficult problem in concentration because they are low-grade and the association of manganese and gangue minerals is intimate and complex. The known size of this deposit has justified investigation of processes such as leaching, wherein preliminary enrichment of the original feed might be advantageous .. Therefore , the ore-dressing studies on Artillery Peak ores were carried on with the object not only of making directly marketable manganese products but also of removing acid-consuming calcite and raising the grade of ore for leachingplant feed . Owing to the extent of the deposits , test work was carried on at the Salt Lake laboratories in considerable detail on several lots of ore of varying composition . This paper summarizes the results obtained from laboratory testing of four samples obtained by engineers of the Mining Branch from the Maggie Canyon area of the Artillery Peak deposit . Also included are results obtained from testing one sample of Chapin Group ore , which was considered representative of numerous very low-grade ores submitted from the Artillery Peak district . During the course of the investigations , many data were obtained and compiled , but for the sake of brevity , data of secondary importance have been omitted or condensed and only those tests giving the more pertinent results are discussed in detail ...

Determination of the fusibility of coal ash consists in melting a pyramid of the ash to fluid under prescribed conditions . The conditions of the test are specified by the American Society for Testing Materials4/ and must be adhered to strictly if comparable results are to be obtained . The Society formerly specified a particular type of furnace , but with improvements in design of both electric and gas furnaces , it was decided by the Society to specify only essential details of the test . The Chairman of Committee D - 5 , Coal and Coke , of the American Society for Testing Materials suggested that the Coal Analysis Section of the Bureau of Mines conduct a cooperative investigation on the effect of furnace type and atmosphere upon fusibility of coal ash . The Coal Analysis Section enlisted the aid of a number of laboratories using the more common furnaces to cooperate in the investigation . Four types of gas furnaces burning natural and manufactured gases and two types of electric furnaces with different methods of maintaining a reducing atmosphere were employed . The results from the survey are tabulated herein , and some comparisons are made . There were not enough data from any particular furnace and atmosphere to make a reliable statistical analysis . However , definite tendencies are evident , and attention is called to them by direct comparison. in tables .

The borehole surveying system described is used to measure ground movement over and near operating mines. The magnitude of any movement is con-trolled by the ground conditions, the mining method, and the mine progress. By correlating these factors with the measured movement, equations can be determined for predicting the effect of mine progress on the surrounding ground. These equations can also be used to predict the effect of mining a similar deposit with similar ground conditions. The borehole surveying system is used in cased boreholes to measure the inclination of the hole in two perpendicular planes. Grooved casing with an inside diameter of 3 inches is grouted in the hole. Two probes are used to obtain the data necessary to calculate the hole position versus depth. One of the probes contains a gyroscope, and the other contains a biaxial force-balance [s]ervoaccelerometer. Readings from the transducers in the probe are punched on paper tape by an automatic data acquisition system as the probe is pulled up the hole at 30 feet per minute by an electric winch. Readings from the inclinometer probe containing the accelerometer are used as input data to an on-line programmable calculator as they are punched on tape. The calculator computes preliminary results of the survey being made. The paper tapes obtained during the survey runs are later used as input to a computer that computes the offsets of the drill hole versus depth in true north-south and east-west planes. These offsets are printed for each foot of depth. Changes in these offsets between the first survey and subsequent surveys are a measure of the horizontal ground movement between the surveys.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1948 from 390 to 375, continuing the trend to fewer units of larger individual capacity that has persisted since the peak in number of plants was recorded on January 1 , 1936. Large - scale construction of new processing facilities continued through 1948 with a resultant gain in daily crude-oil throughput capacity of installed equipment from 6,034,252 barrels on January 1 , 1948 to 6,438,995 barrels on January 1 , 1949. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil therefore increased during 1948 from 15,472 barrels daily to 17,171 . The principal areas of expansion of facilities were the strategic seaboard districts of the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and the East Coast , and the important Indiana , Illinois , Kentucky, etc. , district that supplies markets in the upper Middle West region . These four districts accounted for 79 percent of the total new capacity added in the United States in 1948. The relatively small petroleum- refining industry of the Other Rocky Mountain district experienced a vigorous expansion in 1948 that will continue during 1949 . Capacity building on January 1, 1949 , amounting to 341,500 barrels daily, was 25,750 barrels lower than the comparable total on January 1 , 1948, but was the second highest on record . New construction was heavily concentrated in the Texas Gulf, East Coast , and Indiana -Illinois

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a program to develop small, rugged scrubbers with high dust collection efficiency for use in under-ground coal mines. The Bureau's Pittsburgh (Pa.) Research Center has developed and assisted in the development of several types of improved scrubbers that are especially suitable for various underground mining applications. Research efforts concentrated on reducing the size, power, and water consumption of these scrubbers, while optimizing their dust collection efficiency. Fractional dust collection efficiency, air volumetric range, size, power, water consumption, and application guidelines for each type are described. Air pressure differentials ranged between 2-and 3D-inches water column (wc). The dust collection efficiency of six scrubbers--a venturi, two flooded-fibrous-bed, a venturi-impaction plate, a wetted-fan, and a rotating flooded-bed--were compared. The rotating flooded-fibrous-bed and the stationary flooded-fibrous-bed scrubbers showed the highest coal dust collection efficiency. Test results show that these scrubbers can generally achieve respirable size coal dust collection efficiencies in the high 90-pct range required to reduce both long-(8-hour) and short-term coal mine dust concentrations below Federal requirements.

Mainland China To Pay Japanese Company On Contract Claim. - Mitsubishi will receive $39 million from Red China, half of what was asked, for China's having, curtailed work on a 5369 million steel rolling mill at Baoshan near Shanghai. Copper Found in Chile. - Utah International Inc., in conjunction with Getty Oil Co., has discovered a cooper deposit in northern Chile. Early drilling reveals an enriched zone grading 1.2% to 2 3% copper. Chile already has tie world's largest Cu reserve base. Soviets To Aid Laotian Tin Industry. - The U.S.S.R. has agreed to help strengthen the tin industry in Laos, a client state. In the past, Laos has only produced small amounts of tin concentrate, 500 tons to 1,000 tons per year presumably shipped to smelters in Singapore or Penang, Malaysia. Under the agreement made in June, the Soviets are to supply equipment to increase the out put of tin from the Phontieu, Neng, and Nongsen mines and help Laos with the construction of a tin smelter. The U.S.S.R. itself is a net importer of tin, although a substantial producer of the metal.

Pilot plant studies showed the technical feasibility of fluidized-bed operation for producing hydrogen and synthesis gas by the steam-iron process. A mixture of iron and iron oxide from 20-to 100-mesh was partially reduced with a simulated producer gas and then oxidized with steam and/or carbon dioxide. Results of tests show the effects of pressure, temperature, bed height, gas-to-solids ratio, type of iron oxide, and composition of gas on the gas and solids conversions during reduction and oxidation. A baffled free-fall solids system was also found operable. The short residence time of about 5 seconds limited conversion of the solids.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has in progress a study or the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. A major problem of this study is to compare the deliveries calculated from the gas pipe-line flow formulas commonly used, with the metered deliveries from pipe lines in operation. In order to obtain such comparisons a series of tests has bean made on 25 operating pipe lines in Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and California ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Study of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines was made under the general supervision of H.
