The Bureau of Mines reviewed the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) literature on the nonmetal binary and ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements, with emphasis directed to the following nonmetals: B, C, N, O, and Si. This review examines each of these binary and selected ternary compounds of the group IVB, VB, and VIB elements as coatings and gives some of their preparative methods, uses, and properties. A total of 259 references were found for these compounds of the nine elements. This review was utilized in the Bureau's research to provide abrasion-, erosion-, and corrosion-resistant coatings in order to conserve critical metals and protect various metallic surfaces in metallurgical, mining, and energy conversion systems.

"The third annual safety contest for plants producing sand and gravel, which was conducted in 1911 by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the National Sand and Gravel Association, registered further progress in safety as compared with the two previous annual contests. Both the accident-frequency rate and the accident-severity rate were reduced.The period covered was the calendar year 1931; sixty plants participated, and 17 States were represented by the participating companies.The contest covered accidents and man-hours worked by all men at the participating plant who were employed by the same company; and it included work up to the point of delivery of the material directly to the consumer or to an independent agency of transportation--in other words, to the point of relinquishment of control of the material by the producer.The purpose of the yearly contests for producers of sand and gravel is to aid in the promotion of safety among the employees and in the reduction of accident costs to the companies. The contests develop friendly rivalry among the various plants and among the employees of individual plant in a concerted effort to prevent accidents.Two safety trophies are awarded annually, both of which are provided by Rock Products magazine. One of the trophies is for the host safety record among plants that were in operation the contest year 100,000 or more man-hours; the other trophy is for the best among plants that were in operation lees than 100,000 man-hours. Awards and the relative standing of the various plants are based upon statistical compilation by the Bureau of Mines of accident reports and employment reports furnished by the enrolled companies. are summarized at the close of each year, and the summaries are submitted to each company concerned for certification as to the accuracy of the summary and the completeness of the company's reports from which the summary was prepared. When the summery is returned signed by an official of the company, the records are considered to be a trustworthy basis for determining the relative standing of the various plants. The position of each plant is determined by its accident-severity rate; that is, the number of days of disability resulting from accidents for each 1,000 men-hours of work done by all employees at the plant."

CARBON-BLACK shipments, which had declined in the latter art of 1953, remained low in 1954 until after settlement of the labor strike that occurred in the rubber industry in July and August. The production of new model automobiles in the last quarter of the year spurred the demand for rubber tires and consequently the demand for carbon black. Total shipments of 1,498 million pounds for the year were 4 percent below 1953.

"The Johnny Bull and Silver Knight claims were selected for exploratory diamond drilling after having been examined by the Bureau of Mines 3./The property was considered attractive for two reasons: (1) A prominent outcrop, recognized as an extension of the Tennessee vein, persisted over a distance of 2,000 feet across the claims; (2) its proximity to the known ore shoots in the Tennessee-Schuylkill mine, one of the largest zinc-load producers in Arizona.Actual drilling was started September 18 and was terminated December 8, 1943. Eight holes, aggregating 2,979.5 feet, were drilled with two machines. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The objective of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the effects of adding manganese compounds and ores to iron ore pellets. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, sulfate and chloride, plus six manganiferous ores from the Minnesota Cuyuna Range were tested as additives to increase the manganese content of iron ore pellets. One to 5 percent manganese, as a compound or ore, was added to five magnetite concentrates and one hematite concentrate. These concentrates were ballad, indurated (1,300° C), and tested for reducibility. Manganese sulfate and chloride were unsatisfactory additives causing cracking and degradation of the pellets during reduction. Manganese dioxide, carbonate, and the ores were satisfactory additives. The additives increased pellet compression strengths with a corresponding loss of reducibility, as compared to the pellets without manganese additions. The changes in compression strengths and reducibility were caused by the formation of Jacobite spinel and slag within the pellets. However, when the induration temperature was lowered from 1,300° to 1,200° C the reducibility and compression strengths were comparable to the pellets without manganese additions indurated at 1,300° C.

Core samples from an ore horizon 2,000 feet below the surface were successfully obtained by rotary drilling at the property of the Eureka Corp., Eureka, Nev. The ore was soft and friable; cores were not obtained previously with diamond drills. Whipstocking was used to get samples in a zone 200 feet from a vertical hole. A technique in shipstocking, by which the direction and deviation of the holes were controlled by means of nonfriction-type survey instruments, was successfully employed.

The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with the U.S. Department of Energy in a directional degasification project at the Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. This project is designed to combine the highly successful underground horizontal degasification technology with surface drilling methods. The objective of this program is to demonstrate that directional drilling can be used as a technique for degasifying coalbeds ahead of mining to reduce the hazards of methane-air explosions in coal mines. The directional hole at the Emerald mine is designed to start vertically and enter the Pittsburgh coalbed horizontally. A 3-inch-pilot hole entered the Pittsburgh coalbed at a vertical depth of 999 feet. The hole will be reamed to 8-3/4 inches in diameter, and 5-1/2-inch casing will be cemented in place. Three individual 3-inch-diameter, 3,000-foot horizontal gas collection holes will be drilled into the coalbed in a "bird foot" pattern. A corehole and vertical dewatering hole have been completed at the anticipated coalbed intercept. The dewatering hole was drilled to 130 feet below the Pittsburgh coalbed, a depth of 900 feet, and 880 feet of 7-inch-OD casing was cemented in place. Seven vertical holes for monitoring the extent and progress of degasification have been drilled within the horizontal drilling area.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a method for separating minerals at magnetic susceptibilities within the diamagnetic susceptibility range. The maximum feed rate varies directly with the square root of the lower limit of permissible susceptibility, while the lower limit of permissible susceptibility varies inversely as the square of the magnetic field strength. Minerals may be separated at particle sizes smaller than possible on conventional dry-type magnetic separators.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of high-purity titanium made by two processes. Sodium-reduced metal with 58 Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.) and electrorefined metal with 60 B.h.n. and 70 B.h.n. were used. Titanium of these hardness levels did not work-harden excessively, and beyond 40 percent cold work the hardening effect was not great. Rapid softening occurred when the metal was annealed at temperature between 300° and 600° C. Full annealing, as determined by property and microstructure studies, was accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. A recrystallization diagram is presented which is based on determinations of annealed grain size as a function of rolling reduction and annealing time. For reductions of less than 20 percent, exaggerated grain growth occurred during annealing; for reductions greater than 20 percent, the variation in grain size for each annealing temperature was minor.

A two-phase molten halide-silicate technique for extracting tungstic oxide (WO3) from scheelite (CaW04) and wolframite [(Fe, Mn)W04] was investigated. The halide phase extracted over 99 percent of the was, whereas the lower silicate phase retained about 90 percent of the calcium, iron, or manganese oxides. The most efficient extraction and separation of tungsten from scheelite was accomplished at 1,080° C in a molten system containing, in mole-percent, 9 calcium tungstate (CaW04), 42 sodium chloride (NaCl), 28 sodium fluoride (NaF), 17 sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3), and 4 alumina (Al2O3). Wolframite was also treated at 1,0800°C; the molten system contained, in mole-percent, 11 (Fe, Mn)W04, 74 NaCl, and 15 Na2 SiO3.

Oil from shales has long been a source of fuel in foreign countries; however, in the fuel economy of the United States this source is classed as a reserve for future needs. In fad, shale oil has never been produced here in quantities necessary to establish oil-shale utilization as a sustained industry. The first known resources of stored energy that man endeavored to utilize were probably wood and water, and from these he directly obtained heat and power, respectively. With the evolution of man came the search for and the development and use of other natural fuel resources, the series progressing through the solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels until today those of one type can be converted into another, depending upon the use for which they are intended. The most important fuels are those that appear naturally in the most concentrated, conveniently obtainable, and usable forms. With the discovery of each new and more concentrated fuel there has been an appreciable increase in the importance of and number of devices for converting these fuels into energy.

The combination of flotation and chemical processing methods presented in this report of the Bureau of Mines enabled treatment of typical low-grade ferberite ores from the Boulder County, Colo. area, to produce specification-grade synthetic scheelite. The overall recovery from ore to synthetic scheelite was 87 percent, based on a flotation recovery of 93 percent and a similar recovery in chemical processing. Preliminary mineral dressing studies revealed that the physical and mineralogical nature of typical ferberite ores precluded high recovery of tungsten in plus 60-percent-W03-grade products by these methods. Therefore, the flotation research was focused on attaining plus 90-percent recovery in a concentrate containing 10 percent W03. Detailed studies were made (1) to establish optimum grinding conditions for obtaining adequate mineral liberation, (2) to develop collecting and modifying reagent combinations that would enable controllable selective flotation, and (3) to define the influence of different pulp solids, temperature, pH, and time for conditioning and for the rougher and cleaner flotation stages.

During World War II the shortage of ore revived interest in eastern iron deposits, among which -!2..c "Ile Massachusetts and Connecticut limonites. The Cheever mine, in the Richmond-Salisbury area of Massachusetts, was formerly a large producer of limonite ere. The Bureau of Mines investigated the lateral and downward extensions of the Cheever ore body, which was mined from about 1850 to 1892, by ap open cut 1,000 feet long and also by underground workings. even holes aggregating 1,723 feet, were drilled by the Bureau during the winter of 1943-44. They comprised three diamond-core drill holes, two churn-drill holes, and two rotary-drill holes. A geophysical survey of the Cheever mine area and adjoining ground was made in conjunction with the drilling program. Although this survey did not locate the limonite ore beds, the data were of considerable assistance in locating the limestone contact which forms the footwall of the ore beds. Drilling disclosed two beds of limonite with a heavy overburden of glacial till.

Towards the goal of achieving uniform-high-tensions in roofbolts to provide superior roof support[1-7] for extended periods, Terra Tek installed mechanical-anchor bolts in a mine in eight different ways -- under torque/thrust control with and without hardened washers, belleville washers and tension equalization; in a conventional manner with and without a hardened washer. The various bolt groups were analyzed in terms of their tension uniformity and mean tension levels. Installing the bolts accurately with ? a hardened washer under the bolthead, and ? proper torque/thrust control resulted in the mast uniformly tensioned bolts -- with a coefficient of variation of only 14%, an improvement of 3 times over a conventional installation. Also, these bolts maintained a high tension level -- 80% of the installation tension, compared to 50% achieved conventionally.

This report summarizes the results of flotation studies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines on samples of extremely fine-grained lead-zinc sulfide ores. Samples from five ore deposits in the Pine Creek area, Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho, and one deposit in the Metaline district, Washington, were studied at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center to determine the recovery of sulfide lead and zinc by flotation. During the investigation it was found that flotation could be effectively applied to the selective recovery of exceedingly fine-grained lead and zinc sulfide minerals. Separation of galena and sphalerite was obtained on pulps ground through 1,600-mesh, in which most of the particles were smaller than 5 microns. Selectivity and recovery of minerals in this fine size range were enhanced by use of a chemical dye, diphenylthiocarbazone, as a galena promoter. Although unsuccessful on one ore, application of the dye in treatment of two other very fine-grained ores yielded lead concentrates containing over 62 percent Pb at recoveries in excess of 85 percent. More than 55 percent of the lead in these concentrates occurred as particles smaller than 2 microns.

"Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber—sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases some of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The maximum energy to be supplied through the cable, based upon the horsepower of the motor and the degree to which the motor is loaded.3. The voltage of the supply and the variation of the voltage at the receiving4. The time length of current flow and whether continuous or intermittent.5. The kind of current (direct or alternating).6. The performance of RETIMET metal foam as a flame arrester on explosion-proof enclosures was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines both in laboratory tests and at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) Approval and Certification Center, Triadelphia, WV. The objective of this research was to develop a permissible pressure vent for use on lightweight, vented, explosion- proof enclosures. In laboratory tests, four grades of RETIMET, a stainless steel foam material, were evaluated: (1) 45 NC-7, (2) 45 NC-13, (3) 80 NC-7, and (4) 80 NC-13. Explosive gas mixtures were prepared by a dynamic flow system. Ignition was by a low-voltage arc. Each grade of RETIMET metal foam successfully arrested the flame front in all methane-air tests. To evaluate RETIMET metal foam on large, commercial size enclosures, a multicompartmented enclosure was designed and tested in MSHA's explosion gallery in Triadelphia, WV. Extensive explosion testing revealed that a minimum vent-area-to-enclosure-volume ratio of 11.33 in2/ft3 is required to keep internal pressure rises below 3 psig. The RETIMET metal foam functioned satisfactorily in all tests as evidenced by the absence of external ignitions.

The oxo reaction consists of catalytic conversion of olefins by reacting the olefins with CO and H2 (water gas) to aldehydes that contain one more carbon atom than the starting olefin. The aldehydes are then generally reduced with hydrogen to primary alcohols in a second stage. The two-stage process is called the oxo process. The word "oxo" is derived from the German "oxierung" (ketonization); thus the exact English equivalent of "oxo" is "keto". The oxo process may be applied to nearly all olefins. A wide range of pressures and temperatures may be used in both stages. The pressure range usually employed is 150 to 200 atmosheres. The temperature in the first stage is usually about 140° C. and in the second or hydrogenation stage about 180° C. Although a standard Fischer-Tropsch catalyst may be used for both steps, cheaper catalysts have been utilized to effect hydrogenation of the aldehydes. Most of the information for this, report on the oxo process was gathered from Technical Oil Mission microfilms. T.O.M. Reels 14, 55, and 134 were especially valuable. T.O.M. Report 6 by H. M. Weir was very helpful. Information on the oxo process is scattered throughout documents captured in enemy territory, and the present report does not include all the available data. Some of the information was procured by personal interview. Where, in the body of this report, certain investigators are quoted, the source of the statement is either personal interview or the T.O.M. reports.

The metallic reduction of vanadium chlorides was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a possible new route for preparing vanadium metal in an effort to develop a production process that would be adaptable to large-scale plant production and would yield metal of uniformly high quality. Vanadium tetrachloride was usually prepared by chlorinating vanadium pentoxide in the presence of carbon. Although oxygen-?free tetrachloride was difficult to prepare this way, it could be prepared by the direct chlorination of vanadium carbide. Lower valent vanadium trichloride was prepared by the thermal decomposition of vanadium tetrachloride. Vanadium dichloride was also prepared by the thermal disproportionation of vanadium trichloride.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a chromatographic method for analyzing impurities in helium that utilizes a helium carrier gas contain-ing 25 to 30 ppm Ne. An example of the effect of trace amounts of nitrogen, methane, and moisture on the detector's response is shown. The added neon in the carrier does away with irregularities of the analysis which were experienced when the carrier contained up to 3 ppm Ne. The addition of 25 to 30 ppm Ne causes a loss of sensitivity, but the re-maining sensitivity is adequate for routine analyses. The high-neon carrier allows positive and more linear responses for eight impurities: neon, hydrogen, argon, oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, and ethane. Neon concentration levels of 0.02 to 125 ppm in helium carrier gases were studied. The high-neon carrier has been in successful rou-tine use in Bureau of Mines helium facilities since October 1981.
