The magnitude and rate of advance of an inmine coal squeeze was deter-mined by measuring roof-to-floor convergence on a regular basis. A dial-gage tube extensometer was used to collect data. Using these measurements) Bureau of Mines employees drew contour maps and graphs to show the direction and rate of squeezing. Information on the rate of squeeze advance was used to determine whether steps should be taken to prevent roof and/or floor movement from closing an entire section of the mine and if alteration of mining plans was necessary to prevent further squeeze development. Data analysis revealed that the squeeze was decelerating; thus there was no need to strengthen support in the areas of the mine that were studied. Mining plans were altered, however, as a result of the findings of this investigation.

(E) Historical injury experience: Table 31: Injury and employment data on the quarrying industry for 1911 through 1957. Statistical data on injuries and related employment in the quarrying industries have been collected annually from the operating companies since 1911. Reporting to the Bureau of Mines is voluntary; there is no Federal law compelling operators of quarries and related plants to supply such data. Data presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry. They are however, believed to be representative of the hazards common to all quarry and related workers. This Information Circular from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) documents and supplements the information presented in a series of workshops held during 2002 and 2003. The primary intended audience consists of all who are involved in developing and conducting miners' training. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers and independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property during the year 2000. Unfortunately, these workers have a relatively high risk of suffering serious work-related injuries and illnesses. The mining industry has the highest rate of occupational fatalities among all U.S. industries. The fatality rate is 30 deaths per 100,000 workers compared to 4.6 for all private industry (Morbidity and Mortality Week Report, 2001; NIOSH, 2002). Compared to workers in other industries, miners also have a relatively high rate of nonfatal lost-time injuries, and their injuries tend to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1999). Many miners are also exposed to significant health hazards, including coal and silica dust, diesel exhaust, and noise. More than 1000 U.S. miners die of lung disease each year (NIOSH, 1999). Mine safety and health professionals have long recognized training as a critical element of an effective safety and health program. Federal regulations (30 CFR, Parts 46 and 48) require mine operators to provide initial safety and health training to all new miners, as well as a minimum of 8 hours of refresher training each year. The time and money being spent to train U.S. miners is substantial, and so there is a strong and steady demand for new and better mine training materials and methods. A growing concern among mine safety professionals regards the training of new workers. A major change in the mining workforce is anticipated within the next decade. In major segments of mining, especially coal, relatively few workers have been hired since the 1970's. Thus, as an entire cohort of miners in the current workforce nears retirement, the replacement of these employees will require an influx of new workers. New miners may be young people who lack the ability to recognize and respond to mining hazards in an appropriate manner. They may also have had different educational experiences than their older counterparts. Many safety professionals believe that these two cohorts require different approaches to training. The papers in this report should help prepare mine trainers for the changes about to occur in the workforce and acquaint them with strategies they can use to enhance the effectiveness of their training. The first three papers present basic principles for teaching adults. The five remaining papers are intended to illustrate how these principles can be applied to the development and imple¬mentation of effective training for miners. Below is an overview of these papers. 1. Kowalski and Vaught review the process and principles of adult learning. The learning model they present includes a discussion of goals, content, delivery, assessment, and remediation. Adults are viewed as active learners, experienced-based, expert in their own right in specific areas, independent, real-life centered, task-centered, problem-centered, solution-driven, skill-seeking, self-directing, and internally and externally motivated. Basic aspects of curriculum development are briefly reviewed. For further information about adult learning, see Camm and Cullen's paper. 2. Mallett and Reinke's first paper discusses issues related to training new miners who have recently or will soon be entering the mining workforce. These new generations of miners have different learning style preferences and training needs than Baby Boomers and other older miners. Even trainers who have been highly effective in the past should reassess their training styles and their classroom materials to determine if they are prepared to meet the needs of these young new workers. This paper provides information that will help mine trainers communicate across the generation gap. 3. Mallett and Reinke's second paper provide an overview of training evaluation. Trainers and decision-makers are given a framework for planning and assessing training evaluation strategies. The authors present Kirkpatrick's (2001) model of evaluation categories and discuss how to start an evaluation plan and various ways to collect data. They do not provide detailed instruction in evaluation methodologies, but give trainers a review of the things they need to consider when developing an evaluation plan. A good evaluation plan can inform revisions to a training course, assess trainee learning, and/or answer managers' questions about program effectiveness. 4. Brnich, Derick, Mallett, and Vaught discuss a technique for incorporating worker participation into fire prevention and safe equipment operation training. This technique involves development of short (5 to 7 minutes) videotapes coupled with toolbox talks that ground the content of the videos within the context of a miner's workplace. An example of one of these training modules is presented, along with the results of an evaluation performed on its effectiveness at improving miners' understanding of what types of information they should be sure to communicate during a mine emergency. 5. Wiehagen, Conrad, Friend, and Rethi discuss on-the-job training (OJT) as a method for teaching miners safety and production skills. Much of the training is done by experienced workers. This paper describes how small investments can help improve the effectiveness of on-the-job training. Effective on-the-job training involves some structure and planning in the transfer of responsibility for task performance from the trainer to the novice. Assisting the trainer could involve helping develop up-to-date job analyses and offering strategies for teaching and evaluating job skills. Microseismic noise rates and slope movements were measured in an unstable area along the north wall of the Tripp-Veteran pit, Kennecott Copper Corp., Ruth, Nev. Low-noise, wide-band microseismic geophones were located at various points in the wall, and the change in distance across open fractures, resulting from instability, was determined by repeated measurements between fixed points set on each side of the fractures. The microseismic noise rate increased and decreased with corresponding increases and decreases in the rate at which the fractures opened. The microseismic noise rates and changes in width of the fractures show excellent agreement, and the two types of measurements complement each other in monitoring the progress of pit wall failure.

The Bureau of Mines investigated chlorination of domestic ilmenites in a fluidized coke bed at temperatures of 950° to 1,150° C. Objectives were to develop an effective process for producing TiC14 suitable for TiO2 pigment and to reduce pollution by collecting and treating waste byproduct chlorides. The reactor for these tests was a 10.2-cm-diam quartz tube heated externally by electrical resistance heaters. It contained coke beds of from 35.6 to 82.5 cm in depth that were fluidized by 13 to 25 l/min of chlorine. Ilmenite concentrate powders were introduced at the bottom of the fluid-bed reactor, using the chlorine gas stream as a carrier. Test results showed that greater than 90 pct of the ilmenite reacted at optimum conditions and recovery of TiC14 ranged from 95 to 99 pct of stoichiometric. A temperature-controlled cyclone was used to remove high-boiling-point chlorides such as MnCl2, MgCl2, and FeCl2, and also collected fine unreacted ilmenite and coke dust. Impure TiC14 and FeC13 were separated by collecting the, iron chloride in a condenser con-trolled at 200° C. Titanium tetrachloride vapor was cleaned by passage-through a salt-column filter followed by condensation in water-cooled and refrigerated condensers. Liquid TiC14 was purified further by well-known industrial methods to meet specifications for pigment-grade chloride. Integrated tests were conducted in which chlorine, produced by dechlorination of FeC13 with oxygen, was recycled and used directly in a fluidized-bed chlorinator.

A number of reports have been published giving the analyses of crudes from the different fields and regions as made by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method of analysis.4 Several of these reports include analyses of crude oils from the Rocky Mountain region.5/ The search for new fields and new producing horizons in old fields in the Rocky Mountain region has been quite intensive during the last few years, and a number of discoveries have been made.

"IntroductionRecognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries, Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs.To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made throughout the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous research studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984).The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. In addition, several findings concerning characterization methods will be presented"

The Bureau of Mines is researching a new technology for dewatering clay suspensions that consists of flocculation by high-molecular-weight poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) polymer and subsequent removal of water from the floes via a trommel. The minimum amount of PEO required to dewater the clays depends on the ions adsorbed on the surface of the elay particles. Infrared studies were performed on clays with Li+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+, or 8r2+ adsorbed, with and without adsorbed PEO, to develop data to aid in understanding the dewatering mechanism. Hydroxyl stretching modes between 3,400 and 3,250 em-I, associated with water adsorbed on the clay, showed changes in intensity proportional to the ionic eharge-to-radius ratio; that is, the ionic potential. In addition. a water-bending vibration of adsorbed water at 1,630 cm-1 showed variations associated with water desorption. The data are consistent with changes in adsorption of PEO resulting from variation of the acidity of water coordinated with the exchange ions, induced by the variation in field strength of the ions with the ionic potential.

This paper, describing the concentrator of the Molybdenum Corporation of America in Taos County, northern New Mexico. 7 miles east of Questa, is one of a series on milling methods being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The mine from which the ore comes is 1 1/4 miles from the mill, and produces about 40 tons of ore per day by the cut-and-fill method.3 The ore contains about 5 per cent of MoS2. The mill has a capacity of 50 tons of ore per day and utilizes flotation methods. Water is taken from Red River. Power is generated by a water wheel, or by a Diesel engine in times of water shortage during the winter. The mill is located close to the bottom of a canyon, in order to obtain maximum head or, the water wheel, and the flow of ore is therefore maintained partly by gravity and partly by an elevator and pumps. ORE TREATED The MoS2 content of the concentrator feed ranges from 4.5 to 7.5 biotite, fluorite, small amounts of rhodochrosite and calcite, and the minerals of the granodiorite country rock.

The Coast Range subarea of the Juneau Mining District (JMD) extends from the Canadian border north of the community of Skagway, southerly to Tracy Arm. It is bounded by the international boundary on the north and eastern edges. The Ferebee Glacier and Lynn Canal mark the western boundary, extending south to the Berners Bay region. From Berners Bay south, the western boundary is the eastern boundary of the Juneau Gold Belt (fig. E-l). The city of Skagway (fig. E-2) is the only developed community within the confines of the subarea. Skagway was originally established as a port for the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Recently, Skagway has gained prominence as a port for shipping goods into and mineral products out of Yukon Territory (fig. E-3). Skagway has also developed a thriving tourist industry based on its Alaskan traditions. The community of Skagway maintains a paved airstrip which is suitable for use by small multi-engine aircraft. Several regional air carriers serve Skag-way with frequent scheduled flights, especially during the summer months. Helicopter charter services are available from Skagway during the summer months.

This information circular describes methods used in mining inclined beds of phosphate rock in mines operated by San Francisco Chemical Co. in Rich County, Utah. The mines are on the western flank of the Crawford Mountains, a short, narrow range in northern Utah near the Idaho-Wyoming corner (fig. 1). The western front of the range is a conspicuous wall of folded and faulted sedimentary rocks that rises abruptly 300 to 600 feet above the floor of the adjacent Bear River Valley. Rex Peak, highest point in the range, is approximately 8,000 feet above sea level. The area surrounding the mines is sparsely populated. Randolph, the county seat of Rich County, has a population of 650. It is 10 miles southwest of the mines by road and the only town in their vicinity.

A computer program is presented to perform the detailed and numerous calculations required for determining the interface temperatures and steady - state heat flow through a furnace wall composed of several refractories in layers . A method is developed that will allow the designer to determine the various thicknesses for each refractory layer to minimize either the total wall thickness or the cost of the wall per unit of area . A sample problem is presented and analyzed to illustrate the techniques involved .

An economic evaluation of the Bureau of Mines process for the separation of raw urban refuse into its metal, mineral, and energy components is presented. The process recovers ferrous metal, mixed nonferrous metals, aluminum, mixed-color glass cullet, and refuse-derived fuel products from raw refuse. Data for this evaluation were obtained from selected runs at the Bureau's pilot plant in Edmonston, Md. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of processing 1,000 tons per day of raw urban refuse operating two shifts, 6 days per week. The fixed capital cost, based on second quarter 1976 equipment costs, is approximately $14.5 million excluding land and shipping containers. The estimated operating cost is approximately $8 per ton of refuse processed. This does not include credit for the products, transportation of the products, a tipping fee, or a dumping fee for wastes produced. No finance charges or taxes are included in the operating costs.

Several aspects of coal mine safety-ground system operation are studied. Evaluations of two sophisticated ground-wire monitors are presented, along with a detailed report of development work on a modular ground-wire monitor. A portion of the report covers stray current flow in the safety-ground system, analyzing in detail conditions surrounding the generation of both dc and ac ground wire current. Considerable detail is provided concerning studies of mine ground beds. Additional progress is reported in the development of a. continuous ground-bed monitor, and new techniques are developed for the design of ground beds and their resistance measurement. New methods of accurately measuring electrical parameters of finite layered conducting structures are also reported. The effects of stray currents in ground beds is included. Touch-and step-potentials associated with mining equipment are analyzed, and methods are presented for determining earth voltage gradients around structures contacting earth. Instrumentation to determine gradients easily is suggested. Finally, an extensive effort is described dealing with lightning transients on open-pit coal mine ground systems. The nature of the transients, their expected frequency of occurrence, and the ways in which they damage equipment are analyzed in detail.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents results from an ongoing investigation of the use of adaptive signal discriminating methods to distinguish between cutting coal and cutting mine rock. Bit-cutting forces and tool vibration were measured in the laboratory as a linear-cutting apparatus (LCA) made constant-depth cuts in coal, sandstone, and shale test specimens. A portion of the collected data has been analyzed and some preliminary results are given here. The influence of data bandwidth, data window size, number of signal features, and voting among classifiers on classification performance are noted. Results to date, based on ideal-cutting conditions and simple geologic materials, indicate that of the four classifiers tested there appears to be no single best classifier. Usually, classification accuracy showed slight improvement as the number of features considered for classification increased. The highest classification accuracies were achieved when voting was conducted among classifiers followed by voting among force components.

This study of the rate of evaporation of zinc was undertaken as a part, of a general investigation on refining mixtures of metals resulting from melting reclaimed scrap. One of the methods by which the more volatile metals, such as zinc, magnesium, and cadmium, may be separated is by distillation. Distillation may be carried out at lower temperatures if it is done in an evacuated enclosure. The immediate purpose of the present investigation was to determine accurately the effect of temperature, pressure, and other factors on the rate of evaporation of zinc.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing equipment operators? silica dust exposure at surface mines. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health recently performed a laboratory study to evaluate which factors on an enclosed-cab filtration system are most significant. The various factors evaluated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading, wind infiltration, use of a recirculation filter, and the use of an intake pressurization fan. The result of this laboratory testing has shown that the two most important factors for an effective filtration system on an enclosed cab were the efficiency of the intake filter and the use of a recirculation filter. A higher-efficiency intake filter considerably increased the quality of the intake air that was delivered into the enclosed cab. It also was determined that air leakage around the intake filter notice-ably reduced its air cleaning effectiveness. The second key factor is the use of a recirculation filter, which was shown to improve the air quality in the enclosed cab by six to 12.7 times more than the intake filter alone. The reason for the significant improvement was that the cab air was constantly drawn through the recirculation filter, thus continually filtering the dust out of the air.
