The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted extensive studies on solid-state defluorination (laboratory scale) and tests on molten defluorination (intermediate scale) of siliceous fluorspars. The studies were made to develop a pyrohydrolytic process for liberating fluorine from offgrade fluorspars. Test results showed that more than 90 percent of the fluorine can be evolved by solid-state defluorination at 1,300° C., and more than 97 percent can be liberated by molten-state defluorination at 1,420° C. Solid-state defluorination conditions were established by conducting tests on mixtures of ceramic-grade fluorspars and high-purity silica flour. Pelletized mixtures were defluorinated under varying conditions of time, temperature, and relative concentrations of silica, calcium fluoride, and water. The effects of adding various amounts and combinations of aluminum oxide and iron oxide on defluorination were also studied. Investigations of solid-state defluorination indicates that the following two reactions are involved: 2CaF2 + 3SiO2 = 2CaSiO3 + SiF4, and CaF2 + Sio2 + H20 = CaSiO3 + 2HF, The second reaction is dominant, although significant defluorination can be achieved by the first reaction.

A windowed-cell phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain equilibrium vapor- liquid data for a helium-bearing natural gas (Hogback) at temperatures from -100 to -250° F and pressures to 500 psia. Anomalous phase behavior resulting in the formation of two stable liquid phases occurred at tmperatures below -200° F and pressures above 200 psia. A review of the published literature on the occurrence of multiple-liquid phases included in the report indicates that the experimental results with Hogback gas are the first substantiated evidence of a vapor-liquid-liquid equilibria in a helium-containing natural gas.

Research performed by the U.S. insurance industry has determined that mine subsidence is uninsurable. Consequently, the insurance industry has decided not to voluntarily offer mine subsidence insurance. The U.S. Department of the Interior has long been investigating the effects of mine subsidence. These investigations have resulted in Federal regulations and controls of mine subsidence. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report generally describes mine subsidence, the development of mine subsidence insurance programs, and the eight current mine subsidence insurance programs in the United States. The States that have these subsidence programs include Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Major aspects of the programs include history, administrative and operational procedures, insurable structures, recognition of mine subsidence, major exclusions, claims, insurance premiums, and the economic health of each program. Addresses of agencies involved with mine subsidence insurance are also given. Information within this report can be useful for residential and commercial property owners and mine operators. States that are considering starting or have an existing mine subsidence insurance program can also use this report as a model for initiating or modifying their programs.

The Bureau of Mines has engaged m a program to determine the availability of land for mineral exploration and development in Alaska. Land availability, based on ownership and Federal and State laws and policies, is compared with mineral terranes and mineral deposits. This is the fifth of six regional studies, which cover the State with a comprehensive set of maps and data compilations. This study covers an area of 112.3 million acres in western Alaska. In July 1986, 41.0 million acres, 37% of the study area, were available for mineral exploration and development; 14.6 million acres, 13%, were available with restrictions; and 56.7 million acres, 50%, were unavailable. Nearly 65% of the unavailable land is classified as national parks, preserves, wildlife refuges, and wild and scenic rivers. Of the 34.0 million acres of mineral terranes that underlie the study area, 12.9 million acres, 38%, are available for exploration and development; 3.6 million acres, 11%, are available with restrictions; and 17.5 million acres, 51%, are unavailable.

To determine the feasibility of removing nonferrous metal impurities from automobile scrap by thermal treatment in a rotary kiln, the Bureau of Mines conducted four series of tests with synthetic scrap mixtures heated at various temperatures under oxidizing and reducing conditions. The treated scrap mixtures were melted in an electric-arc furnace and cast into small ingots for impurity evaluation. Analyses showed that the ingots were essentially free of residual metal impurities except for copper. Test data indicated that in an oxidizing atmosphere the percentage of copper removed increased with treatment temperature. Percent of copper removed in a reducing atmosphere was found not to be temperature dependent. A significant finding was that copper was embrittled under some of the operating conditions and was mechanically removed by fragmentation.

Gypsum is a form of hydrated calcium sulfate (CaS04.2H20) which is widely distributed over the earth's surface. The two varieties worked commercially are rock gypsum and incite. Rock gypsum, the variety commonly mined for commercial purposes, is a relatively soft mineral having a specific gravity of about 2.3 and weighing about 150 pounds per cubic foot. The chief producing States are New York, Michigan, and Iowa. Before being used the crude gypsum is ground and generally calcined. The predominant use of gypsum is for building purposes (the manufacture of plaster), for which calcined gypsum is required. Gypsum is also used as a retarder in Portland cement, as fertilizer, and for other purposes. GYPSUM MINING Crude gypsum is mined by two methods - underground and open-pit. Although the use of the former method predominates, open-pit mining increased in relative importance during the early twenties and contributed about two-fifths of the output during the period 1925-38.

"SUMMARYA chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost has been compiled. Many accidents were described in more detail because of their unusual features. Tables have been included to indicate the number of major disasters and fatalities by the principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals prior to 1945. The number of men employed to indicate man-hours exposed is unavailable; therefore, a true picture of disaster data by principal product mined, by State, and by 10-year intervals is not possible. However, the data are presented to indicate the causes of major accidents and bring to the attention of those affiliated with metal and nonmetal mines and quarries the hazards involved and lessons that can be practiced to keep such accidents at a minimum.INTRODUCTIONThe Bureau of Mines was requested to compile a chronological list of accidents at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries (excluding coal mines) in the United States in which five or more lives were lost. Data have been assembled on accidents from all causes in these mines and quarries from the earliest available information (describ¬ing an underground mine fire in Nevada in 1869) to the last reported major accident (a fire at a company-owned bunkhouse in Arizona in 1945).The accounts of the accidents were taken from articles in the technical press and from published and unpublished reports of the Bureau of Mines. Many of the accidents have been selected for more detailed descriptions because of the unique circumstances and to show the variety of dangers involved.Tables are included to indicate the number of major accidents, with resultant fatalities, by the principal metal and nonmetal producing groups, by State, and by 10-year intervals previous to 1945. Three of the five primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest have facilities in the region to make aluminum mill products. Only one of the three, however, produces a variety of shapes and forms. The principal reason for the lag in development of an aluminum mill products industry was found to be transportation cost. The long range outlook is for expansion, based mainly on growth of the western market for aluminum used in construction, containers and packaging, electrical applications, diesel trucks, mobile homes, and irregation pipe. Consumption of western aluminum mill products in 1985 is projected at 1.1 million tons, compared with estimated consumption of 250,000 tons in 1961.

Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals 4/ and investigations of their chemical and physical properties. 5/ The coal represented by the sample from Weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the as from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.

The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional ore-processing methods that will confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive liquid wastes. Stream and ground water pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226 and thorium 230, in liquid wastes from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in an acid leach-resin-in-pulp flowsheet was investigated in the laboratory. The process consists of acid leaching for dissolution of the uranium, sand-slime separation and countercurrent decantation washing for recovery of a pregnant slime slurry, and the use of ion-exchange resin for recovery of uranium from the slurry. Reuse of clarified barren effluent for washing in the simulated mill circuit was carried through 55 cycles. Dissolution of uranium from the ore averaged 97.5 percent. Washing efficiency of 99.9 percent was attained when using 4.35 volume tons4 of combined barren effluent and makeup water per ton of ore. Absorption of uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by an ion-exchange resin averaged over 99.9 percent.

REPORTS received from operating companies by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, indicated marked progress in the reduction of injuries to employees in the coking industry in 1951 as compared with 1950. The fatality rate (0.14) per million man-hours of exposure declined 33 percent and was the second best performance since statistics on the industry were first collected in 1916. The nonfatal-injury rate (10.94), the best since 1940, declined 8 percent and was bettered only in 8 of the past 36 years. The nonfatal rate is based on all injuries resulting in loss of time for more than the remainder of the day on which the injury occurred. The exposure to hazard, as represented by the number of man-hours of work time during the year, was 7 percent higher than in 1950 and, except for the year 1943, was the highest since 1920. The fatality rate for men employed at beehive-coke ovens decreased 16 percent and the nonfatal-injury rate 23 percent, while the man-hours of work time or exposure increased slightly over 16 percent. The fatality and nonfatal-injury rates at byproduct ovens declined 33 and 2 ½ percent, respectively, while the number of man-hours worked increased 6 percent.

A basic precept in mineral exploration is that the best places to prospect are where minerals have already been found. The California desert has many old mining districts once thought to be "played out" that are currently producing more mineral wealth than at any time in the past. Because no "crystal ball" exists that will enable us to predict the Nation's future mineral needs, land management plans must be flexible enough to respond to these often unforeseen needs. MANAGEMENT ISSUES The California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA) (figure 1) encompasses 25 minion acres, nearly one-quarter of the total area of California. Passage of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA) launched an intensive program by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to study this vast area. Painstaking scientific investigations were made of wildlife and plant populations, soil, air, and mineral resources, range use, and wilderness characteristics, among other environmental concerns.

The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace be direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. The reaction of coal, oil, or natural gas with air and oxygen and/or steam yields a gas containing varying amounts of impurities. Depending on the raw material and the end use of the product, these impurities include solids, such as dust or slag, and gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Considerable effort has been expended in developing and operating purification systems, and the literature is replete with equipment data and operating results. The research problems, the design, and the operation of the various systems have been the subjects of patent applications, journal articles, and textbooks.

The Vicksburg mining property lies in the southeastern foothills of the Star mining district, Beaver County, Utah (fig. 1). Within a few miles of the Vicksburg mine, lying in a semicircle from south to northwest, are such past producers of lead-silver ores as the Moscow, Hoosier Boy, Red Warrior, Wild. Bill, Harrington-Hickory, and many others. Farther to the north, in the San Francisco district, are the famous Horn Silver and Cactus mines. The formation at the Vicksburg property consists of interbedded limestone, shale, and dolomitic limestone. These beds have been metamorphosed by the intrusion of irregular masses of porphyritic igneous rocks grading from quartz-monzonite to granodiorite. Ore deposition is in north-trending fissures of sheeted zones, contact metamorphic in type. These depositions were subsequently altered to gossan. A preliminary investigation of the Vicksburg property involving surveying, mapping, and sampling was made by W. A. Young and F. H. Gunnell, engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in the fall of 1946. As a result of the investigation, a project was set up to investigate the possibility of ore occurrence at greater depth on the fissures under the mineralized zone by diamond drilling.

A flotation process was developed by the Bureau of Mines for separation of carbonate and phosphate minerals occurring in unaltered phosphate ores of the Phosphoria formation. The process involves depression of phosphate minerals with fluosilicic acid and flotation of carbonate minerals with fatty acid emulsions. In individual laboratory tests, selective removal of carbonates was achieved with phosphate recoveries ranging from 60 to 80 pct P205. In continuous-circuit testing, sizing and separate treatment of coarse and fine fractions was necessary to achieve 65-pct P205 recovery. Concentrate grade ranged from 26 to 33 pct P205. The flotation tailings containing primarily carbonate and phosphate minerals is a potential fertilizer material. When reacted with H3P04, concentrated superphosphate containing approximately 40 pct available P205 was obtained.
